Neil Patrick Harris in Sweeney Todd

The 2006 revival of Sweeney Todd featured the Barnicle in the roll of Tobias, Mrs. Lovett’s developmentally challenged son. I’m not as familiar with this story as I am Les Mis but there is a great explanation of the entire opera over on this page (which is also where I found the video.)

What a great voice NPH has! It’s strange to see him in a serious roll, especially on the stage. This is much better than his performance in Stuff. Throughout the song I expected him to pull out a water gun or start saying “moist”.

You may also want to check out the 2004 or 05 production recording of Assassins, which starred NPH as the Narrator.

I’d love to see NPH play Bobby in Company, but for complex thematic and historical reasons, it would actually be difficult to cast an openly gay man in that role. (e-mail me if you’re curious why.)
