Season 3 Episode 2: We’re Not From Here Discussion

Well, tonight’s episode wasn’t quite as awesome as last week. Maybe it was because there wasn’t a whole summer’s build up but I just don’t think there were as many legendary moments.

what was good?

“I’m just jubilant my former paramor is jubilant.”

The gang switches to big words when Gael is around to keep him and his mediocre English in the dark. Ted loses his patience with the “New Yorkers” after a party goes wrong in a moment I’m sure will be an overnight phenomenon across NYC. Barney’s fake-name reminded me of Shawn on Psych giving Gus funny names every week. Marshall’s signature mix of puppy-dog love and deep, deep kink surfaced with his requests for Lily’s just-in-case-I-die letter. Robin has such a big ego that her sex dreams involve her.

what was bad?

The cold open left me a little… cold. While repeat viewings will surely prove me wrong, the guys exploiting Marshall’s superstition to hilarious effect didn’t make me laugh. I don’t know how I feel about Old Marshall and Old Lily. Robin’s storyline wasn’t as strong a B-plot, but it had its moments.

PS. Both Ted and Robin’s hair seemed different this week. Un-styled, and just a little bit puffy. Ted actually looked like I usually do. That isn’t a compliment.

I think the show had so much stuff to focus on, leading up to the finale, with the wedding, Ted/Robin that it’s in a “Where do we go from here?” phase. Of course, the b and c stories then far outshined last night so there is room to improve.

I’m a little curious if there will be followup soon on the yellow umbrella but even if that happens, there are some promising episodes coming soon … and I can wait for the slapbet countdown to get here!

I am curious to see what else develops with the yellow umbrella as well Mike. Although, I find there are two camps of HIMYM fans: Those that are primarily concerned with finding the mother and those who enjoy the antics and adventures of the characters. I fall into the latter group so I’m not too worried about how many or how few clues we get.

I agree with Ted’s unkempt hair. But disagree on Marshall’s storyline, I think Marshall’s one liners are the shows most consistent thread. However I was surprised that they didn’t pay off the superstition at the end of the show, it felt like an awkward ending. But, more importantly - what is happening to Barney? Barney in jeans is unthinkable! He was always such babe magnet and had such an air of mystery about his conquests now he seems a little desperate. It’s the second episode where he’s chasing after girls and girls that are beneath him.

My biggest problem of the season has been Marshall becoming a wus. He was always a bit soft when he was around Lily but now he’s like that 90% of the time. It starts to annoy me actually and I miss the old Marshall.

@Adam: I’d love to drive some traffic your way, you’re the hardest working man in television. You could use the back of your TV to heat up leftovers it’s on so much.

@Gina: I agree, it was weird to see Barney out of a suit. He seems to have moved to the JV team in order to help Ted out but it’s missing something. I think I’m having a hard time adjusting to Ted going out on adventures with Barney. I liked it better when we’d see Barney post-coitus tied up in bed or about to escape.

JD, I’m definitely in the latter camp myself. The clues to the mother … interesting. But the real fun is in all the different things they get into in the meantime.

I agree about some of the stuff that’s going on with Marshall and Barney. You’d think Ted and Barney going on those adventures would be just as entertaining as some of season one moments (”I’d like to play a little game called, ‘Have You Met Ted?’”) but right now they are missing the mark.

To Adam’s point about Marshall, he may be becoming a wus 90% of the time because he is with Lily 100% of the time. We get moments of him and the others cutting on Ted (Olde-timey inventor, persian night club owner, the tramp stamp) but very few where the gang is all together .. which is where Marshall is frequently at his best.

I think they’re doing a good job showing just how much Barney wants to help Ted. But that said, it’s way more amusing to watch Barney’s antics when he’s left alone.
