Season 3 Episode 3: Third Wheel Discussion

“No way, no way, no way, it’s a tricycle!”

This is about as wholesome an episode about having sex with two girls can be. Maybe that’s what you get with network TV. Or maybe that’s the way you’d tell your kids the story. Either way, I loved it. I have a history of loving plot lines where my boy gets the girl. And boy howdy did Ted get the girl. Girls actually.

What was good

  • I loved that Ted’s story took place in either his apartment or the bar. Episodes like Where Were We that have a million different locations are great, but there’s something to be said for the simplicity of the familiar settings.
  • I love that Barney actually bought a belt. I have a feeling this is going to become a trend, much like “I’m Rick James Bitch” from Chappelle Show. Mark my words.
  • Barney and Marshall both have iPhones. That was quick.
  • I’d still take Trudy if it came down to it but I very much enjoyed Busy Phillips. It’s always good to see a Freaks and Geeks alum and she wasn’t nearly as annoying this time as she was in her appearance on Entourage last season.
  • It’s cool that Ted likes Wilco (It’s obvious I do) but I think he’d have done better with some Alice Smith or Corinne Bailey Rae.
  • I love that as hardened as Barney is, even he isn’t immune to the crippling fear that the tricycle can offer.
  • Lily helping Ted and taking pride in his success in the sack.
  • Barney has talking a girl into bed down to a science. I particularly like his mortality angle. Genius.

What was bad

  • Not much. Robin’s b-plot was a little weak. I can’t really complain though because it just left more time for Ted’s story.
  • I was missing the payoff in the end but it’s probably best left to the imagination. I think he won the belt, it looked like he was walking into the light as he entered Marshall and Lily’s room. What do you think?

Favorite moments

“Those were your underwear? They seemed tight. I’m kidding, I don’t wear underwear. Women’s underwear. Often.”
“So, beers, you want to stay here? I know this other place called my belly…”
“I thought we were in for the night? That’s what I thought about your bangers and mash but I guess we’re both mistaken, ’govna”
“You’re so petty. You’re…Tom Petty!”
“We’re combing up sars.”
“I’ve got TB. Tiny bladder.”

Barney vocab word of the week

There was a lot to enjoy. The quips (bangers and mash, Tom Petty, etc.) were fast and furious and it was building to a great episode. Was hoping for a little more info on the infamous pineapple and the end, talking them into bed, was pretty clunky but I suppose that was part of tricycle self-doubt that was going on.

Anyway … rewatch: oh yeah! And I’m definitely checking out the “How it really happened” video tomorrow at cbs.com.

Ted rode the tricycle! If you look closely, when Barney switches to Marshall to ask if he did, or didn’t, Marshall nods in approval, and immediately the scene stops.

I know this episode isn’t getting much love…but I laughed. And dude, how can you not love a show with Barney in it? He’s awesome.

It should get love! Love from two girls at once. This was one of the best episodes of the series. Good point Isabel, I defy anyone to not like Barney.
