Season 3 Episode 4: Little Boys Discussion

“But she doesn’t like field of dreams!”
This episode finally centered around a Robin storyline. Turns out that despite her best efforts, kids are just not for her. We even saw her as a little girl, refusing to watch cartoons because she just wanted to read Highlights and drink her juice in peace. No wonder she got Ted’s joke in the Milk episode from Season One.
What was Good
I love the chemistry between Ted and Barney when they’re competing for a girl. Barney is an evil genius, his plan to win the girl from Ted was more premeditated than serial killer plots I’ve seen.
The opening had some good jokes. I especially liked everyone’s various inner thoughts on what Robin’s “but” was (which was in itself a reference back to the Slap Bet episode).
Little Barney is back! This time we finally saw him. We haven’t heard from him since The Wedding in season one.
I love Marshall’s attempts to stay significant.
What was Bad
The episode wasn’t directed by Pamela Fryman and it shows. I felt like the timelines were off (Ted’s story seemed to stretch out over weeks and Robin’s only a few days) and that the whole format wasn’t as tight. There were hardly any flashbacks and I was really put off my Ted’s “relationship” with the girl being told through voice over and a montage. Up till now we’ve gone into pretty deep detail on each of Ted’s women, this was a shock to not really know the Stacey girl at all. Oh, and that shot of the Importance of Being Earnest marquee in the beginning voice over? They used that shot already in Stuff.
I think it could be argued that the guys were a little mean to Marshall. He just wants to feel like part of the group.
Favorite Moments
“I thought I’d meet his son in twenty years when I’m a cougar and he’s as hot as his dad.”
“Getting the kid is winning isn’t it?”
“I’ve got so much game I’m The Game. Well crafted, keep-you-guessing-thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.” - When Ted first said that I assumed he’d reference the rapper The Game (who is great) but maybe that’s just how Ted and I differ.
“I may have made some wildly inappropriate homoerotic comments to a gentleman wearing your shoes.”
“Do they know that one that goes ‘ungah-chaka, ungah-chaka.’ What’s that called? Oh yeah EVERY REGGAE SONG”
“Which Chumbawamba song?”
Barney’s (anti) vocab word of the week
- bra
- –noun
- Another word for bro, or brother. Usually used when talking to a good friend or sibiling of the male sex:
Whattup bra? How’s it goin man??

Can I just say that it bugs me that the same kid who was in Lily’s class and blackmailed Marshall in Monday Night Football now played this kid in Little Boys - and it’s a new school year?

I thought about this Andy. I thought that it could potentially be the same school year, but now that I think about it, I think you’re right. The blackmail happened at Super Bowl time so it was January. If this episode took place around now, that’d be a new class.
Maybe the kid stayed back? He does have a father willing to introduce him to all his girlfriends, maybe his biting caused him to repeat kindergarten?

I enjoyed this episode, but agree the timeline was way off- esp. with casting the same kid. Either way, there were a lot of memorable one-liners!

Does anyone want to comment about the son and daughter drawing pictures of aunt Robin and not mom when they were little kids? I think this is a big clue about the mom not being there when they were little.
