Season 3 Episode 7: Dowisetrepla Discussion

First, sorry I’m late. I was in NYC this weekend which was fun, but not How I Met Your Mother related. Now, onto the show!

“It’s this sort of inconsiderate, immature jackassery that makes me feel like I’m living in the Real World house. And not the early years when they all had jobs and social consciences. I’m talking about Hawaii and after.”

With that sentiment Marshal and Lily decided that, as a married couple, it was time for them to find their own place. This week’s episode was all about mistakes, Lily’s mistakes, Marshall’s mistakes, Barney being a mistake. The only people not making mistakes were the writers who gave us a tight, guest-star-free, classic How I Met Your Mother episode.

What was good.

  • This show consistenly has the best “drunk acting”. The scene with Barney and Ted discussing boobs that were like the heads of two Irish babies didn’t need all the empties, Josh Radnor and Neil Patrick Harris nailed the subtlety of acting three sheets to the wind.
  • A few times in the first seasons we’ve seen Marshall and Lily doing something inappropriate at the table or in the kitchen of the apartment and then have Ted revealed asking them to please stop. This episode turned that on its head by showing Barney and Ted and revealing Marshall and Lily’s disgust.
  • We got more of future Ted offering immediate commentary to the story such as any time Marshall made a decision toward the house or tried to convince Lily it was a good idea to buy.
  • Ted Mosby: Detective. That was wonderful. I love Barney and Ted reverting back to childhood mystery stories but not being able to shake the bad noir dialogue and David Caruso bad puns.
  • The show always pushes the envelope and this episode didn’t disappoint. Lily walking in on Ted shaving wasn’t spelled out but the implication was definitely there.
  • Marshall’s dream of Rock & Roll, sons, and chocolate pancakes vs. Lily’s dream of mother-daughter art exhibits and Crepes de Chocolate goes to show they really are perfect for each other.
  • Robin can’t let go of neither Canadian culture references nor the metric system. Classic.
  • The sound byte where Wendy the Waitress was hit by the cork was the exact same sound used in the pilot when Lily was corked. Same eye too.
  • The show continues to tackle real world issues (more on the credit card debt, this time centered around lying to a spouse and what that means for the relationship, also, the tribulations of buying a house)
  • It’s Hooch! No longer a resident doctor who’s the butt of hilarious bouillon jokes, now he’s a loan officer.
  • Thank god Robin and Ted finally addressed that it’s weird for them to hang out.
  • Jason Segel on the drums! I haven’t seen that since Freaks and Geeks. Check out the difference:

What was bad.

  • Some people are complaining that the show is becoming too self referential. I disagree. But, I’m a die-hard fan, maybe that does turn people off?
  • Barney is treading the line of being too mean. That elaborate ruse to bed that girl would’ve been heartbreaking if she wasn’t so crazy.
  • The divorce scare was a little lame.

Favorite Moments

“I thought I was going to get married to my last boyfriend but boy did that guy have commitment issues. That whole relationship? That’s three weeks of my life I’ll never get back.”
“I met a girl last night. So perky, so full of life, and not at all fake.”, “You’re talking about her boobs right?”, “Si, and that wasn’t Spanish, that was cup size. What up!”
“I thought you were shaving your face.”, “Well, clearly I wasn’t!”
“I’ve never been to this neighborhood. I kinda thought this part of town was…water.”
“Lily, you have a debt the size of Mt. Waddington.”, “Waddington?”, “It’s the tallest mountain in Canada. It’s like 4,000 metres high.”, “Meters?”
“Ted, do you think I have no morals whatsoever? I simply want to fool a girl into thinking this is my apartment so I can nail her once and never have to see her again. I’m not a monster.”
“They’re a Chinese couple that wanted a white baby. It works both ways.”
“My sisters taught me how to bake and how to listen.”
“The Mosby boys? You mean you and your sister?”
“Lily left the lid off. And Marshall blew his.” Now we just need a riff from that song.

Barney’s Vocab Word of the Week

dowistrepla-futura.jpg
Not Barney’s, but the vocab word this week is the episode title, Dowistrepla. A New York City district that turns out to be short for “Downwind of the Sewage Treatment Plant”. This word is brought to you by futura, which is a nice change from the crappy intro credits font even though it’s not as awesome as Century. (Non-font nerd summary: Century is what is used in the logo for this site as well as the Season One show logo. Futura is in the image above, taken from this week’s episode.)

There’s a significant lack of resolution to this episode – but maybe that’s what makes it more realistic. No idea what’s going to come of this ‘Dowisetrepla’ apartment.

I really liked it, and I think you said it all with the review.
I just have to stress how much I loved the guest (Janice!!), I’m a big Friends fan, and that was awesome.

Sometimes I feel they are being a bit too much self referential as well, but the last few episodes were very creative, and added a lot to the characters (Ted Mosby: Detective; Marshall and Lily’s dreams about their family; World of Warcraft; the Crazy/Hot Scale. to name a few favorites)

BTW, there were some really clever lines this week; Some scenes became a continuous laugh, pure awesomeness.

Great review I agree with everything. As far as refernces go. Any good show has them, Seinfield was very self-referencing. It makes jokes funnier, because (and this may just be my friends and I) going back to an old joke is what great friends do.

I love the David Caruso reference, and the video you linked. Man that guy overacts. This season gets better and cannot wait to see all the cool times in Dowistrepla.

    Good point Ike, good point.

Do you all think that we’ll be seeing a lot more of the Dowisetrepla apartment? A new set for the show? I hope so, it could be a good shift.

So, Ted’s living alone now, where do you think that’ll go? A new roommate? Or will the apartment become a real bachelor pad? It is right upstairs from the bar.

    Hrmmmm

Now, after reading this damned review, I’m conflicted about my views concerning this episode.

I simply must watch it again.

More nuanced than I remember it being. Especially with the David Caruso business. Totally missed that.

I don’t really know how much I really loved it though. Even after reading this, I still feel like it’s been my least favorite so far this season. I’m not intensely sure why though…..something just felt off.

That’s all I’ve got right now. Normally I’d be a bastion of input concerning the show, but I don’t have much regarding this one.

    friend using their vibrator…

I can see the British advertisers now…. Get rid of your gordo brown boobs and replace em with a pair of tony blairs. What better way to promote boobieometry then to have two of Britains biggest boobs fronting the campaign huh? I mean brown and blair …
