“Something Blue” - Season 2 Episode 22 (Finale)

Last night’s episode may be four months old, but be warned that spoilers follow. Click through to read the rest.
The format of this episode is wonderful. It feels very Tarantino, like “Brunch” from earlier in the season. The entire dynamic between Ted and Robin-the give and take of compromise and regret while trying to salvage a sinking relationship-is mature and realistic, the way adults actually behave - a rareity for sitcoms. Barney and Ted’s conversation at the end is an authentic “bros, scotch, and cigars” scene. I also liked how the wedding motif carried over with Ted saying “I do” to Barney’s proposal to resume his role as Ted’s wingman again. The build up and excitement Barney experiences when he realizes Ted is going to re-join the game is priceless-all culminating in the perfect cliffhanger.
If you go back to “Something Borrowed” when Lily realizes her dress is too small, the blue french horn is already missing from Robin’s mantle because, at that time, her and Ted had already broken up. Now that you know you’ll notice it every time but I missed it entirely on first viewing.
Fun trivia: the man proposing at the restaurant, whose ring ends up in Robin’s champagne, was actually proposing to that woman. She thought they were just extras but his proposal was 100% real.
Likes:
- Lily and Marshall Awesome, and thier song Totally and their daughter Frickin
- Marshall reciting First Corinthians
- YOU SAID THAT ALREADY! (and all the rest of Barney’s reactions to the story)
- Cigars and scotch outside the wedding
- the re-return of Ranjit!
Dislikes:
- Alyson Hannigan places #2 in the worst drunken acting category. Position #1 belongs to Cobie Smulders and her diner scene from “The Scorpian and the Toad”.
Memorable quotes:
- Tell people what?
- If “wait for it” wasn’t a catch phrase, this episode cemented it in the cultural lexicon.
Music:
- The song in the very end, during Ted’s voice over and his and Barney’s talk on the veranda, was “Sea Green/Sea Blue” by JayMay. It’s the perfect, folky kind of song the show uses so often and to such good effect. A perfect end to a great season.
Where will next season pick up? Tune in Monday and come back here to talk about it.

Good call with the french horn missing. I definitely missed that but when I pick up the second season dvd I’m going to look for that.
How do you get these great shots from the episodes? I love seeing the freeze frames of my favorite scenes.

@Adam
I use my digital camera and pause the Tivo. No, actually I just bring the episode into my computer and find a freeze frame without too much motion blur then capture it (most video players have a feature for this). I bring it into Photoshop and adjust the levels and curves to optimize the color and I’ll usually saturate it a little since compression washes it out. It’s all pretty simple stuff if you’ve got the right tools and an eye for color correction.

Wow, alright then. Pretty simple hahaha. Do you hook your computer up to the digital cable box?
I have to look into getting photoshop. Compliments though on the shots you’ve chosen here. They’re great shots from the episodes and I loved that they went to a fast food restaurant from the limo.

I live in Photoshop all day because of my job (which, sadly, isn’t being paid to watch HIMYM.) It’s a great piece of software, super versatile.
As for the stills, the preview for “Something Blue” was the final frame as it cut on “legend…”. This post I just grabbed an image I thought was fun and captured the episode (and wasn’t the same as the other post I’d made about the same episode earlier today.)

I was watching the show on and off, knew the characters and general plot, and never gave it a shot to watch it frequently (things always kept up). But this episode was a wow moment.
I was on holiday then, and by luck I caught the show right before it began. I loved this epsiode. It really is a classic one, and I forced myself to watch every episode of this show a few weeks back. Suffice it is to say, I’ve become a massive fan. I keep kicking myself for not watching this show frequently from the very beginning. This show is pure TV gold.
Amazing episode. They way things went back and forth was brilliant. Were they breaking up, were they moving to Argentina, were they breaking up, was Robin pregnant, wait… they were breaking up. I didn’t see the first episode when I saw this, and didn’t know Ted wasn’t meant to stay with Robin, so I was eevn mroe stunned.
Watched the episode again (as I watched all the episodes in the series in one go) and it still stands out in quality. Loved it, loved it, love it.
