Neil Patrick Harris: “Animal Room” in HD

animal-room.jpgDo you know how you can tell it’s been a slow time for How I Met Your Mother news? Normally I wouldn’t post about the HD release of an early 90s cult indie film that happens to star Neil Patrick Harris.

The film, called “Animal Room“, stars Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Lillard. It will be released by Vanguard Cinema on HD DVD this April 22. Some more info, via highdefdigest:

Starring Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Lillard, the dark crime thriller ‘Animal Room’ saw only a limited theatrical release back in 1995 but has since amassed a small cult following on video. First released on standard-def DVD back in 2001, Vanguard has set an April 22 street date for the HD DVD.

I’ve never heard of this movie before today. It doesn’t sound very good to me though. Has anyone seen it? I found a montage of clips on youtube (see below) to job the memory.

Hopefully the strike will end so we can start talking about new episodes of the show again.

Cobie Smulders Boxes Michael Clark Duncan

cobie-smulders-3.jpgBroken Lizard, the comedy troupe behind such fine cinema as Super Troopers and Beerfest, has a new movie in production called Broken Lizard’s The Slammin’ Salmon”. I smell Oscar…

Alongside Michael Clark Duncan, the movie will star Morgan Fairchild. Lance Henriksen, Vivica A. Fox, and Cobie Smulders. That’s right, our favorite Canadian will be on the big screen.

The movie is set in a Miami restaurant owned by Cleon “Slammin’” Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan), a brutal former heavyweight boxing champion who institutes a competition to see which waiter can earn the most money in one night. The winner stands to gain $10,000, while the loser will endure a beating at the hands of the champ.

What do we think? I’ve never seen any of these movies so I can’t really speak to their themes or style. I’ll probably check it out just to support Smulders though.

via Moviehole.net, who could really have found a better picture of Cobie.

Ted Mosby, Negotiator

There are a lot of videos about the writers strike deliberations. This is the first one I’ve seen with Josh Radnor however. He’s got his breakup beard and does not appreciate puppets.

Music Page Updated

I’ve been lazy about maintaining the music page. There was no info for season 3 at all. Until now. I headed over to the IMDB message board for How I Met Your Mother and sure enough super-fan Mike Jonas (who I’d love to get in contact with. Anyone know him?) had a list of the music so far in season 3. If there’s a song you’ve been dying to identify, go check out the music page and see if it’s there.

There are a few unidentified songs for these recent episodes still. If you know a song that’s missing from my list, please leave a comment and I’ll get the page updated.

Enjoy. Let’s hope we’ll get more episodes soon so I can keep updating this page.

Season vs. Season: Volume 1

This is a weekly column where the episodes from seasons one, two, and three will go head to head in a humor cage match. This week, the episode one’s. It all starts here.

With this weeks’ repeat, I thought this would be a good time to go back and get caught up with the Season vs. Seasons.

Season 1: Pilot

When Ted’s best friend Marshall proposes to his girlfriend, Lily, Ted realizes he’d better get a move on if he hopes to find true love. Ted soon meets Robin in a neighborhood bar, immediately becomes smitten and scores a first date. But when Ted can hardly wait to see her again, his eagerness threatens to scare her away.

I have an affinity for this episode since it’s where it all began, it’s really hard to compare anything else because without this, there’d be no show. When viewed with the series as a whole however, it is arguably different in tone. All pilots suffer from this since we don’t know the characters yet. Marshall was a little more naive and kind of a lovable loser vs. the awesomeness man-child he is now. We met Robin, at the same time Ted was, and the blue French Horn was stolen. I think the episode has some great moments:

  • Robin’s seduction of Ted in her apartment
  • The Olive theory
  • Lily’s eye-patch
  • Ranjit!

Season 2: Where Were We?

The gang tries to help Marshall get over Lily, especially when he finds a credit card bill that leads to a hotel in New York City where some of her charges are listed.

This episode is important to me because of how eagerly I anticipated it. I so had looked forward to seeing Ted and Robin as a couple finally, and this didn’t disappoint. The image of Ted laying Robin across his drafting table made me wish I didn’t work at a computer (there’s no real estate here for that type of thing, and it’d end up turning out more like Gael when he wiped Robin’s laptop). I liked the scene with Ted and Robin in the shower too. Good Marshall moment. In fact, I love the hilarity of an off-the-tracks Marshall trying to find himself as an individual throughout the episode. The ending fell apart a little bit for me, but at least we saw George Clinton.

Season 3: Wait for It…

Robin shows up with a date and this motivates Ted to ‘get back out there’. We also learn/learned something major about ‘the Mother’.

Again, I was in eager anticipation for this episode. The premieres are always very emotional, we’ve been kept waiting for so long. This episode was great (we saw it again this past week, or so I’m told, I was hard-at-work Monday night). The Mandy Moore/Enrique Iglesias cameos were good, and not over-the-top. We saw bearded Ted, old-timey inventor Ted, Persian nightclub owner Ted, and tramp-stamp Ted. Overall, a good episode. It also had one of my favorite quotes: “that dark path is my driveway.”

Advantage

I have to give the nod to season one. It’s nostalgic, it’s innocent, it’s the show before it became the show it is today. What do you guys think?

Scorecard

Season 1: 1-0-0
Season 2: 0-1-0
Season 3: 0-1-0

How I Got a Free Episode from Apple

itunes-freeepisode.jpg

Apple, as if I didn’t love them enough, has endeared themselves to me even more today. How? Let me tell you.

I don’t have an apartment yet in New York City. That means I have a little extra money floating around. Rather than be wise and invest or save for a place, I’ve decided it’s a better idea to buy myself nice things. The first? An iPod Touch. I hooked it up to my computer today and it’s awesomer than I could have hoped. But things were about to get better.

When I hooked it up to iTunes I got the message that you see above. What better way to see the amazing quality of video on the iPod than with a few free samples? What’s a good TV show to give people? Why, How I Met Your Mother of course. So, having downloaded “Something Borrowed”, I’m even happier with my purchase. Maybe I’ll season pass the whole show so I can watch it on the train each day.

So if you’re thinking about buying an iPod, remember that you’ll get a free ep of How I Met Your Mother when you first sync it up. Enjoy!

Why Marshall and Lily Haven’t Moved Yet

Over at TVSquad they have a piece explaining why LAME (Lily Aldrin and Marshal Erickson, get it? Pass it on.) haven’t moved into their sweet Dowisetrepla co-op yet. Turns out I was right back when I said they were probably closing in the background of the last few episodes. The show does this alot—mentions one thing then doesn’t go back to it for awhile (ala Ted’s ass-antlers). Looks like the next new episode might bring back the co-op and some more LAME jokes. (editor’s note: zing!)

Now that Ted lives alone, how will it play out? I have a few ideas, then you guys vote and tell me which you like the best.

  1. Bachelor Pad - Ted lives alone, rents out the second bedroom to Barney, and the two of them ride the metaphorical 4×4 every weekend and alternating Wednesdays
  2. New Roommate - Ted can’t afford the place and has to find a roommate. This would make sense since I see so much of myself in Ted and I am going through that very process right now (ps, anyone in Manhattan looking for a place?) and it would thus follow the “This show is suspiciously close to my real life” axiom I’ve seen in the past. Plus, new main character. Maybe Wendy the Waitress? Or someone new altogether.
  3. The Odd Couple - Robin can’t afford her BK apartment and moves in with Ted. I know this is a long shot but come on, it would be awesome. That’s a lot of opportunity for hilarity. Plus, one thing leads to another and Robin invites Barney upstairs one night… I’m just saying.

So, what would you like to see?

What do you want to see happen with the apartment once Marshall and Lily move out?
