Announcing the How I Met Your Mother Forum

The season is over, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have anything to talk about. While the show is airing, it makes sense for me to create posts and have you comment. But now that we’re on summer vacation, it’s time to change things up a bit.

Have You Met Ted now has a forum to discuss How I Met Your Mother. Why should I decide what we talk about? With your intelligent, well thought-out, articulate commentary you guys are the real reason the site is a success. That’s why I want to give you all the opportunity to start discussions as well as participate in them.

If you visit the forum you’ll see that there is already some activity. A few days ago I sent out an email to some of the site’s top contributors and asked them to check out the forum and tell me what they thought. Imagine my surprise when I checked back and everyone had not only started topics but started topics that were all blog posts I’ve been meaning to write.

So check out the forum, sign up for an account, tell your friends, and let’s keep the discussion going. Anything goes, there are no rules. A few things to consider when making an account:

  • A valid email address is required. Some of you like to use cute fake addresses when leaving comments. Make sure you use a real one here since activation is required. I promise I won’t spam you.
  • If you’d like a better title than “member” send me a message or an email and I can change it to whatever you like. Some people are doing this already and I love the creativity. Who can come up with the best name?

Season 4 of How I Met Your Mother will have 26 Episodes

Neil Patrick Harris was on Live with Regis and Kelly today. During the broadcast he revealed that 26 episodes have been ordered for season four. That’s great news!

Ideally that means that the rushed feeling that was present during the end of season 3 will not be there next year. It also means, I would think, that more story lines can be explored in depth.

So, knowing this, I have two questions to ask you. First, what would you like to see from season 4? What’s your ideal season-long arc and what smaller adventures/stories would you like to see told?

My next question is sure to be a controversial one. There’s a lot of talk back and forth about when and if we’ll meet the mother. There are two philosophies at odds here. The first school believes that the final moment of the final episode should be Ted meeting the mother, then fade to black. The other camp believes that it’s possible we’ll meet the mother and that the show will continue indefinitely after the titular moment. Which side do you fall on and why?

When should we meet the mother?

What Will Happen to Robarn in Season Four?

First, you guys are awesome for holding back about this in the main episode recap. I really wanted to know everyone’s opinions on the finale in general so I appreciate it. I’ll have to watch it again tonight but all your positivity has made me realize I was perhaps too harsh. That being said…

What was up with the long lingering stare from Barney to Robin? I know they’ve made little references here and there, but that was a big, flashing-light signal. I have to say, I loved it.

All season Robin’s been in the background. She really only dated three guys that we saw, and none of them were anything serious. She’s been relegated to the occasional goofy Canada joke and laying down the razor’s edge wit that makes her so damn hot. But look again: slowly all season she’s been looking better and better (I’m amazed each week they trump the previous episode.) It’s almost as if we the viewers are falling for her in real time as Barney does. She’s the girl in the group that was always one of the guys until you realize you’re comparing every other woman to her. This slow burn has earned the creators the right to use this plot shift. And I thought it was all build up to the end of Sandcastles in the Sand. I think RoBarn has only just begun.

I’ve said many times before that I wouldn’t like to see Barney in a relationship; that the best part about his character is the balance of a despicable Lothario with a heart of gold. Seeing him as a foil for both Marshall and Ted made each character richer. For all those reasons I felt like anything between him and another girl would seem awkward and something between him and Robin might seem forced, something for her to do since she’s no longer with Ted. In short, I wasn’t a fan.

Now I’m coming around. Consider the following:

  • Neil Patrick Harris kicks ass. We know that in real life NPH is not Barney. I think the sly wit is there, as well as the charm, but he’s much more of a kinder, gentler person. He’s also a phenomenal actor. I have utter faith in him as a performer that any new development would serve only to add depth and breadth to the character, not to cheapen it. In dramatic shows, characters are expected to change and grow. HIMYM has already proved a sitcom can be much more than the stereotype, why wouldn’t it also prove that real character growth is possible in the half-hour format?
  • The writers love Cobie Smulders as much as we do. When was the show firing on all its cylinders the best? Whenever they were writing a story that had Ted and Robin falling in love. Smulders seems to be their muse, and all of the best moments have involved her and Ted. If it’s her and Barney, that gives the writers an opportunity to do it all again, but this time with wit and sarcasm where once there was sappy romance. In other words, we could possibly see another long courtship that is as awesome as the night of broing out in Zip, Zip, Zip.
  • Robin is a different person. We’ve seen her character change the most from the beginning of the series. She’s now more sensitive, forthcoming with her feelings, and she seems to have gotten over a lot of her issues in the past that held her back. I think she’s ready for this plot just as much as Barney is.

All that being said, I don’t expect Barney and Robin to turn into LAME. I think they’ll have their own hilarious issues and if they do date, they’ll be the couple that always seems to make the most jokes at the other’s expense.

On the other hand, they could not get together at all. They could have a really casual on-again, off-again thing happening. I think it’s safe to assume the only thing we won’t see is a repeat of season one where Barney suddenly turns into Ted trying to win Robin’s heart. All the other possibilites seem plausible, and awesome.

Season 3 Episode 20: Miracles (Finale) Discussion

Do miracles exist? Us fans got a forth season and Ted and Barney both got a new lease on life so it seems like they might. Tonight saw many cliffhangers, many flashbacks, and, in my opinion, many mistakes. One thing is for sure: I’m already anticipating this fall. Season three is over, what do we think? Spoilers follow so only continue if you’ve seen the finale. Continue reading…

How I Met Your Mother Gets a Fourth Season

This probably isn’t as big a deal as it would’ve been a month ago but LA Times is reporting that How I Met Your Mother has been picked up for a fourth season.

A lot of the ratings spike can be attributed to Britney but it seems like while people came for Spears, they stayed due to the quality of the show. I, like most people, didn’t love “Everything Must Go” but I’ll chalk it up to rushed writing after the strike and give Bays and Thomas a pass.

Bring on the fourth season!

Season 3 Episode 19: Everything Must Go Discussion

Ted pulled on his red boots, Barney pulled off his suit, and Britney pulled out the cleavage. All this while Lily tried desperately to sell her art in order to preserve her wardrobe in the hopes that maybe not everything must go. Photos to come tomorrow. Continue reading…

“Everything Must Go” Tonight…Literally

Tonight’s episode, “Everything Must Go”, will not only herald the return of Britney Spears: It will also show LAME creating a web site (lilyandmashallselltheirstuff.com, which isn’t up at the time of this writing) to help them pay their bills.

Fans of the show know that a web site is never mentioned unless it exists. In this case, the site will send fans to CharityFolks where props and wardrobe from the show will be for sale. Proceeds from the sales go to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles - The Leader in Pediatrics.

For all those people who love the wardrobe of the characters on the show and couldn’t find it last time, go bid on your favorite stuff tonight, then come back here for the recap.

Thanks to Elizabeth for this info.

Lost-Style Clue or Prop Department Mistake?

Sorry for publishing two posts right in a row but this is too good.

The bro-worthy Seat42f noticed an interesting detail on HIMYM mother last night. The very same framed piece of paper can be seen both in Future Ted’s room as he tells the story to his kids and in Stella’s apartment in Rebound Bro this past week. See for yourself:

Sear42F assures that with HD and careful inspection the two are identical. What do you think? Subtle clue?

Personally, I don’t buy it. If this was Lost, maybe, but even though Bays and Thomas are cheeky and love rewarding fans who pay attention to detail, I think this goes beyond even them.

Also, those shots of the little Mosbys are old. Notice the kids never talk anymore? They both look too old now so most of the opening shots are just recycled from season one.

If I had to wager, I’d say it was just a mix up in the prop department. I’m sure there is a box of “framed art” that gets used whenever they make a set. Kind of like how there’s a Chinese Checkers board on the wall of both Robin and Ted/LAME’s apartment.

What do you guys think?
