A Look at Episodes 3.17 and 3.18
The following information contains spoilers for the next two episodes of How I Met Your Mother. If you’re into that kind of thing, read on.
3.17 “The Goat” on April 28th
CBS describes this as:
Barney questions “The Bro Code” in order to accommodate his own needs.
Additionally, this episode falls on Ted’s 30th birthday. The show likes to have major events occur on or around holidays (Ted and Robin’s first kiss at New Years, Ted realizing he really wanted Robin on his 29th birthday, the slap on Thanksgiving, Ted and Robin sleeping together on Thanksgiving, etc) so what can we expect? Fallout from this week’s ending?
I wouldn’t be surprised if Ted forbids BRo (Barney and Robin) from hooking up again. If there’s anything Mr. Mosby likes it’s an ultimatum. He’s just that kind of guy. Barney has never been able to say no to sex and we’ve seen Robin likes the forbidden guys. All this then puts Ted and Barney’s relationship to the test.
How will this change the dynamic between Robin and the group? If Ted is pissed at Barney I can’t imagine he’d be pleased with Robin. What side will LAME come down on in regards to BRo?
3.18 “Rebound Bro” May 5th
Wikipedia says:
Ted has “broken up” with Barney as a result of the fallout from “Sandcastles” and “The Goat,” so Barney tries to move on by finding a new bro/Padawan to mold in his image.
This would qualify as the major event that makes Ted question Barney that the writers have hinted at. It also worries me greatly. The whole point of Barney is that he’s actually a good guy, at least to those he cares about. I’d hate to see Ted dump him as I think Barney would be the one really hurting. It’d be realistic though, and I trust Bays and Thomas to make it good. I don’t mind a little drama with my comedy, I just don’t like forced situations of tension.
The question still hangs, how does all this affect Robin?
This is also the episode where we’ll see Sarah Chalke return. Could Barney and Robin’s tryst cause Ted to take things to the next level with Stella?
The Future
After this there are just two episodes left. This is usually the time of year when things start building to a climax. I can’t wait. We know Britney is coming back in addition to Chalke but we’re not sure if it’s the same episode. It’s all so exciting!

well spoilerfix.com says:
Episode 3.17: The Goat
Airdate: April 28, 2008
04/22 - Barney tells Marshall about the “Bro Code.” Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and Barnabas Stinson are at a colonial pub in Philadelphia in 1776. Ben claims he called dibs on a wench and George blocked him. This ends up with them coming up with a set of rules that govern how bros comport themselves among other bros. Both are too busy to write the code and enlist Barnabas Stinson to write said “Bro Code.” Marshall doesn’t really buy the code so Barney tries to show him that Ted is respecting it. We will see, via flashbacks, how Ted followed the code. Lily has two special guests for her kindergarden class: Farmer Frank and Gary the Goat. Things go awry when Frank explains where meat comes from. Lily buys the goat in order to save it from ending up on a plate and brings it to the apartment until an animal rescue can pick it up.
Episode 3.18: Rebound Bro
Airdate: May 5, 2008
04/22 - Ted tells Barney that he doesn’t want them to be “bros” anymore but stay friends. Barney, who is affected a lot by this turn of events, gets a rebound bro named Andy to help him cope. But this new “brolationship” doesn’t last long because of Barney’s comments to Ted when Andy is present. Barney goes on a quest to find his next bro. It will be a challenging task as most of Barney’s old friends are now married and have children or already have a bro. He eventually teams up with nerdy Randy who delivers the mail in Barney’s office and actually offered to be Barney’s new wingman. Barney has a lot of work to do to make Randy bro material. Stella and Ted are ready to take their relationship to the next step.
and Wikipedia list episode 19 (May 12): “Barney and his new bro try to make Ted jealous by inviting the gang on a ledgendary adventure. “
Cosmo | April 23, 2008 @ 8:55 am
Ted will realize Barney’s a good guy by the end of the season. The guy freaking flew to Cali to get Lily to come back to Marshall. Ted can be hard headed, but he isn’t dumb.
Personally I hate the Barney/Robin thing, but that’s only because I can’t get over what Bob Saget told us in the first episode (”And that’s how I met your Aunt Robin”) and think Ted and Robin should be together.
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 9:33 am
@ESG good call. That’s a pretty high level of detail for a spoiler, usually they’re just hints.
That plot sounds like it might be trouble, but it’s hard to judge an episode on just a summary like that. I’m really curious to see who gets cast as Barney’s new bros, if it’ll be a recognizable face or just some actor.
Marko | April 23, 2008 @ 10:17 am
Ted and Robin’s first kiss wasn’t on New Years Eve. Their first kiss took place during Purple Giraffe.
ESG | April 23, 2008 @ 10:23 am
@JD if they actually following that plot it does look troublesome and looking to give Barney a new Bro, by their recent record it probably end up being either a celebrity or a recognizable face/actor.
But the Stinson (if I could have a choice) should hang with the coolest bros you could match him up with! Vince Vaughn, Paul Rudd, Matt LeBlanc (Joey Barney=LEGENDARY) , perhaps since John Choo has already been on HIMYM so why not Kal Penn!? or Max Casella (Vinnie from Doggie, M.D. the Original Bro!), even if for only a guest episode that will be awesome!
By the way, what happen to Barney’s stalker??? Ted suddenly dating Stella??? Robin & Barney???Everything lately seems so rushed…
To be honest, I think Barney is a really good friend (Barney does go for great lengths for the guys), and I always thought that “Have You Met Ted?” line/game is the the best a wingman could do for Ted. So you think he was a closer or loser that night? jejeje Remember, nothing good happens after 2 a.m.!
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 10:49 am
@Marko, you’re right. I think I associate that New Year’s kiss as first since it was the catalyst for the wedding, nothing good happens after 2am, and Ted and Robin eventually getting together
@ESG things do seem to be happening quickly. I think that they’re covering a lot of ground and being short two episodes this season because of the strike isn’t helping. They did this on Entourage too, huge changes in the characters lives would happen in between episodes and we were just told about it in the next one. I guess they can’t show it all.
ESG | April 23, 2008 @ 11:32 am
@JD yeah your correct and that’s understandable, being short of episodes/time to move the story forward, but since the show’s premise is how Ted meets the mother, I think a little more insight on that was needed and spending time/episodes on other stories that don’t seem relevant to the plot unless Marshall, quitting his job and Barney & Robin getting together helps that end in someway. I think it’s great they’re dating, but and important fact like that should be have been addressed and presented to the viewers better, being a fan I felt cheated on some precious info/moments of Ted and Stella getting together, even more so after the 2 minute date, and it only makes me feel like that relationship is going nowhere instead. Has she even met the group? That yellow umbrella has spent more screen time than Ted & Stella’s courtship. =)
Do you think maybe they are rushing things and putting pieces together, just in case they are not renewed? God, I Hope they announced the fourth season soon!!!
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 12:10 pm
@ESG I agree. I’m hoping that we get flashbacks to Ted and Stella moments. I think it comes down to the lack of availability for Sarah Chalke. So they’re hinting at Ted and her relationship even thought they aren’t (can’t) show it. In a couple weeks when she pops up (and if she ever comes on the show more permanently) we’ll see flashbacks to these times that we’ve missed as they happen.
That’s the nice thing about the timeline shifting on the show, just because we missed something as it happened doesn’t mean we’ll never see it again.
And in regards to Barney and Robin, or Marshall’s job, that’s all the type of stuff that doesn’t seem big at the time but looking back later you see how important it was. Like the wedding last year when Robin couldn’t go with Ted, eventually that had a big impact. It happens in real life too, something random you don’t think is important turns out to be a huge factor later on.
Neil | April 23, 2008 @ 1:01 pm
Do we know yet if they are picking up the show for next year? It is one of mine and my co-workers favorite show. I can’t see them not picking it up.
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 1:22 pm
@Neil
Nothing is confirmed yet but the general consensus is that CBS will pick it up at up-fronts in May due to the increase in ratings from the Britney appearance.
Neil | April 23, 2008 @ 1:23 pm
I will be happy when it is set in stone.
ESG | April 23, 2008 @ 1:47 pm
@JD Perhaps, I agreed with you and sure hope so. Future Ted has to show/tell us a lot then. And yes flashbacks are the cream of crop on this show and how they follow them on later episodes/seasons. This back and forth of when Sarah is available I don’t like. And I don’t scratch out Sarah Chalke as the mother yet, but only if she wasn’t attached for another season of Scrubs.
On the upcoming episodes, “The Goat” I think it’s has a Slapsgiving potential to it, so it’ll probably be awesome and put the series right back on track, mainly because the goat theme has been in the works since season 1 they must something planned all along. By the way, Ted’s turning 30 next episode, didn’t Barney in the first episode tell Ted not to even think about getting married until he’s like 30?, am I wrong on that one???
And in Rebound Bro, if the making of his padawan/bro is at least half as funny as how we got to see Barney’s transformation from hippie to suiting up vader-style, then it’ll be a great episode. Wonder what Bro theories await us.
Oh, and saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall this weekend, and thought it was great movie, Jason Segel kind of reminded me of Ted for a couple of moments in there. Mila Kunis was great too, can’t she come on over the show and be the mother?
@Neil I read somewhere, that it’s probably going to be picked up for a fourth season for reasons A) even if it doesn’t break high number like other cbs shows it still does a good above and consistent number in the ratings on Mondays and/or B) CBS won’t take a chance that it gets on another network, but nothing is on writing yet, so who knows…
john d'arc | April 23, 2008 @ 1:48 pm
That doesn’t sound so bad.
Ted hasn’t been Barney’s “bro” for a long time. Actually, more like never, not counting Season Three Ted. Maybe Barney will finally accept it?
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 1:54 pm
@ESG I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with the significance of Ted turning 30. Barney did say that. Not that Ted ever listens to him, but that’s a very good point.
Marcy | April 23, 2008 @ 3:42 pm
Very intersting spoilers!
And I really do like the “Ted turns 30 and can get married now”- theorie. I can literally (*cough*) see Ted telling Barney “I´ve done what you told me to. Am I free to get married now? Please?”
Still, Ted “breaking up” with Barney will be very sad. I somehow see Barney´s hippie persona coming back (well, feelings- wise I mean). We all know what the last break- up did to Barney, and it clearly was a major life change. Let´s just hope he won´t send Ted a video where he beggs him to be his bro again
But, Barney looking for a new wingman also means, happy single Barney how we know him. I´m getting really excited now about what will happen between him and Robin. Sadly there are no spoilers about that *sigh*
Oh, and I just mentally blocked the possibility of HIMYM not being picked up for another season. That keeps me from planing evil things I would to to the people responsible at CBS if the show got cancelled.
Misha | April 23, 2008 @ 4:04 pm
Count me in the anti B-Ro club. I thought it was weird for several reasons, but mainly that it violates the bro code. Granted it wasn’t explicitly stated in Zip Zip Zip (the last time we heard about the bro code), but I was sure a corollary would be: “One doesn’t hook up with a girl that your bro has dated for a year.” Love to see that coming back. I can see next episode ending with the B-Ro reveal to Ted, to which he gets upset and tells Barney that they can’t be bros any more.
Also I noticed the show follows a seasonal arc. The early episodes set up the season’s plotline, then there is some individual filler stories in the middle, and towards the end of the season, we see everything presented with emotional twists before some grand finale. I think we should prepare for some Nothing Good Happens After 2a.m. and Something Blue style drama. It looks as if they are setting up this season to be Barney’s turn.
P.S. When is Barney’s brother getting married? Surely they can’t miss that plotline.
JD | April 23, 2008 @ 4:27 pm
The more and more I think about it, the more I have a new theory:
I think that Ted’s “break up” with Barney will be less out of anger over the Robin hook-up and more out of a feeling of needing to “grow up”. Now that he’s 30 Ted will see going out and trolling for girls as immature and wrong, and since he has Stella he doesn’t need to.
Also, if you’d told me the premise of The Yips in a spoiler I’d have swore it was going to bomb, but NPH pulled it off. Time will tell.
ESG | April 23, 2008 @ 4:30 pm
Perhaps, Barney & Robin didn’t happen like when been lead to believe. Barney couldn’t do that to his “best friend” Ted! Ted, say I’m your best friend!
Indeed Barney, looking for a new wingman points then to him being single and available as we love him, Barney suiting up and just being awesome. Barney and Robin are good together but I don’t see them in a relationship, just Bros.
Maybe Ted’s and Barney sort of “break-up” is that Ted understands and finally gets that hanging around Barney and trying to follow/copy on his advice and theories can’t help him land “the one”. Now he’s with Stella and can’t follow that brohood anymore. Future Ted refers to Uncle Barney and Uncle Robin, so whatever problem they might have obviously they move on and are friends. Where’s Stella going to fit on Ted Bday? She’s not going to break up with him is she? Jajaja that would be terrible!

JD | April 23, 2008 @ 5:03 pm
If he calls her “uncle Robin” in the future they’ve got A LOT to explain. I know she’s a bro but…
ESG | April 23, 2008 @ 6:23 pm
typo, I meant Aunt Robin, My bad….
@JD I agree with your needing to “grow up” theory/idea.
J | April 23, 2008 @ 7:43 pm
Im Pro-BRo… just cause I want more laser tag scenes.
I want to see if Ted is actually over Robin, because I could see that being the reason it dosen’t work out with Stella…
And I dont think Stella is the mother because they would have paid more attention to their relationship…
ky | April 23, 2008 @ 11:18 pm
I agree if Stella IS the mother, I will feel rather jipped as so far, the fondation of her and teds relationship has been completly skipped over.
I am anti BRo but mostly because I still want ted and robin to be together…
J | April 24, 2008 @ 2:57 am
yea, as much as ted and robin are great because they are the foundation of the series… Robin and Barney fit together a lot better…. and… LASER TAG!!!
Jojo | April 24, 2008 @ 2:05 pm
Im Pro Barny & Robin!!
Shame There Is No Spoiler About Them!!
KC | April 24, 2008 @ 8:57 pm
Just an FYI:
http://www.legen-waitforit.com is reporting that the second to last episode of the season has a Barney/Abby(Britney Spears) coupling.
Which is weird…
Diana | April 28, 2008 @ 12:07 pm
JD!!! I just saw the promo for “The Goat” last night while watching Cold Case on CBS.
DEFINATELY shows Barney and Robin in bed together with Barney saying “I can’t believe I slept with my best friend’s ex girlfriend!”
So excited for tonight!

guys, Stella cannot be their mother, since the show would be already over, wouldnt be? Once the mother`s name will be said, the show should end…….actually, on one of the czech webs, somebody mentioned - Tracey, this girl came to Ted in the stripclub on the Thanksgiving (at the end of the episode and she has introduced herself to Ted and told him it was sweet what he had done for that homeless guy) and he told kids….and that`s how I met your mother and kids shouted WHAAT? ………………..so mother`s name should be Tracey (forgot the name of the episode)
