How I Met Your Mother Gets a Fourth Season

This probably isn’t as big a deal as it would’ve been a month ago but LA Times is reporting that How I Met Your Mother has been picked up for a fourth season.

A lot of the ratings spike can be attributed to Britney but it seems like while people came for Spears, they stayed due to the quality of the show. I, like most people, didn’t love “Everything Must Go” but I’ll chalk it up to rushed writing after the strike and give Bays and Thomas a pass.

Bring on the fourth season!

Bays and Thomas are playing with fire:

This critic blames the bad episode on the writers, not Britney. Bays and Thomas succeeded in getting the renewal. Now time to move on from Britney.

This isn’t the right place for this, but I’m wondering how the ratings went for both this and Big Bang Theory vs. American Gladiators. This is the first time that these two shows have had to go head to head against AG (which is a failure in terms of production and direction, IMO), and I’m interested to see how they fared.

I agree with Jake. I’m happy about the renewal, but enough of the Britney already!

If Bays and Thomas knew what the ratings were for season 3 would be, would they of done things differently? They did an outstanding job on the last 3 episodes of season 2 by the way.

I just think they ended Ted and Robin romance too early. It’s now only followed by the hardcore base who wants to know who’s the mother. I think they would of built a better base with Ted and Robin romance. I didn’t see the fan base building with season 3. They had to resort to stunt cast Britney just to save the show. My wife started watching Dancing with the Star because they broke up.

Bays and Thomas didn’t write this episode. Perhaps that explains why you didn’t like it.

  6.  JD | May 13, 2008 @ 5:32 pm

that’s a good catch dl004d, it was written by Chris Harris and Jonathan Groff. They’ve been writers on episodes past, and I know most episodes get written by committee but it’s worth noting nonetheless. Thanks!

The last Epi that was written by Thomas/Bays was “The Chain of Screaming”

They will write the finale :)

  8.  john d'arc | May 13, 2008 @ 7:24 pm

I didn’t like Chain of Screaming either.

What other episodes did they write? I hope they don’t reach Tim Kring levels of suckitude when they write for the show they created.

@ John They gave Jason a show because his movie was coming out.

If that is not awesome, I don’t know what is!?

It’s awesome news that HIMYM was picked up for 4th season. If it’s plagued with Britney Spears, then its less awesome. If it’s more Sarah Chalke on again off again every couple episodes, then I’m simply not interested. Instead of building towards a really good cliffhanger for the finale, they just stuck us with Britney Spears for good ratings, and a girlfriend that comes around once every 3 weeks.

Don’t get me wrong, 10 sessions is one of my favorite episodes ever. They should have left both characters where they were..Britney just being plain crazy and never spoken of again, and Stella being too busy for Ted (just as in real life), but always a possibility in the future. I love her character and her as an actress, but if she can’t ever be consistent then I don’t want her on there.

Can’t wait for a better, 4th season. First season was awesome. Second was just a little below it. Third Season..eh. It was definitely more funny than the others, but less towards the actual advancing of the plot.

Maybe over the summer during off time this blog could put up some good discussions..Such as top 5 episodes, favorite character, explanations, etc. Could be fun.

Thanks and can’t wait for the next entry

i still don’t like how Stella was just “we started dating” shoehorned into the show. At least have the decency to write it in well.

Point is, is having the show on worth it if it has to whore itself out to continue its existence? Would we rather HIMYM die with dignity, or live on as a revolving door of pointless guest stars and crappy storylines (which have been all too common lately)?

I’m super excited that HIMYM gets picked up for a 4th season, but I’m sad that the title of the link says “Britney Spears-enhanced ‘How I Met Your Mother’”

IMO britney spears is definitly not enhancing the show. The other thread shows how britney felt really forced.

hopefully when season 4, the writing returns to its legendary level!

I have to agree that Season 3 hasn’t quite been up to the awesomeness of previous seasons. It was still pretty good, but I felt Seasons 1 & 2 were better. Especially Season 2 - that was sooo legendary :)

I’m glad that HIMYM was renewed for a fourth season.

It will be interesting to see where Carter and Bays take us.

I’m kinda looking forward to more slaps from Marshall. We’ve got two left.

i really hope the show gets back on track from a finding the one standard.

I mean, this season was funny, but it seems like its deviating from the idea and the execution of season 1 to the point where older ted is just going on and on with random stories, which shouldn’t be the case until much older Ted.

If I had my way season 4 is about finding the mother, and season 5 will be ted and the mother actually together.

Oh and I need to point out, while Im not entirely in the boat for Ted and Robin ending up together, it is still possible, because Ted never said he’s married to the mother. The major complication in this is that the kids appear to be of different ages, which hasn’t been confirmed either.

  17.  Geri | May 15, 2008 @ 3:24 pm

I am extremely thrilled that HIMYM will be back for another season and I can’t wait to see what happens (good or bad). It’s kind of like waiting for the mail…sometimes you get an awesome package you’ve been waiting for and sometimes there’s just bills!

@JackAtak “Maybe over the summer during off time this blog could put up some good discussions..Such as top 5 episodes, favorite character, explanations, etc. Could be fun.”

I have been working on something for the past few weeks along these lines and will be glad to share it with the members of this blog. I don’t know that it will last the whole summer, but I think it’s enough to keep those of us who are bored on Monday nights, busy for a while.

@AF - I totally agree….we have 2 slaps left and I can’t wait to see how Marshall administers them!

PLEASE TELL ME THIS ISN’T TRUE

  19.  JD | May 15, 2008 @ 6:40 pm

I doubt this is true. For the first appearance, Hannigan didn’t even get to meet her since they had no lines together.

  20.  JackAtak | May 15, 2008 @ 11:01 pm

Thats sick if that were the case. I would quit watching.

  21.  Josh | May 16, 2008 @ 10:58 pm

I don’t see where in that link Allison Hannigan says shes being considered for a full time spot on the show… I think that article is making a bit of a reach. You would assume they would quote her if she said something about Britney coming on full time.

    Spoiler alert!!!

the mother can’t be robin because ted refers to her as “and that’s how i met your aunt robin”

he also refers to her as aunt robin in the episode about robin hating kids
