Neil Patrick Harris in “Prop 8 – The Musical”

You know you’re a huge star when Jesus needs an introduction but you don’t.

I love this. Lot’s of other big names too. See if you can spot them all!

Oh, by the way, I should probably mention that I’m on Twitter if any of you also are and want to follow me. To be honest, I rarely talk about HIMYM there and spend most of my time talking about web design stuff and making jokes that at least I think are funny. The decision is yours! If you follow me, drop me a note so I know it’s you as I don’t always follow people back. I’ll follow you guys though, you’re my people.

Man, this musical is so awesome!!!
They should make a movie or something with this >_<
I noticed Craig Robinson (Darryl Philbin of The Office), Nicole Parker from MadTV and Megan Mullally (Karen in Will&Grace).
NPH's performance is stunning!! I kept laughing at every word he said, so funny and so true…

  3.  KJO | December 4, 2008 @ 3:32 am

I had heard about this but hadn't actually seen it until just now. Thanks for posting it JD.

  4.  Mothership | December 4, 2008 @ 4:43 am

awwee you want to be a microcelebrity…how cute… If they allow gay wedding I am one step closer to wedding my cow *Legen…..dary*

  5.  JustinDickinson | December 4, 2008 @ 4:47 am

I went ahead and deleted Mothership's comment because it was hateful, to me and to the gay community. The latter is the only thing I was offended by. Feel free to repost the bit ridiculing me, that's fine, but I won't put up with hate here.

  6.  Ashley | December 4, 2008 @ 5:37 am

I saw this yesterday and LOVED it. Anytime NPH wants to sing is just fine with me. But Allison Janney too? And Barrett Foa? Perfection.

  7.  JackAtak08 | December 4, 2008 @ 6:03 am

I'm going to lay this out the best I can..

I'm a huge NPH fan, and I think he's a great actor. It really doesn't bother me that he's gay. I'm not a "Bible Thumper" I just happen to know what the Bible says

I don't agree with the content of the video. It's presumptuous, and clearly doesn't have an understanding of the Bible. When Jesus was resurrected the Jewish laws were nullified for those who believe that Christ died on the cross for our sins. If you are a believer, any rule in the old testament, including shell fish (lol) can be broken.

I'm not going to touch on the other parts of the topic because honestly I don't care if gays get married. I just don't want people to assume that the Bible is a book of hate or simply just a rulebook, because THAT offends me.

  8.  KJO | December 4, 2008 @ 6:26 am

The quote used by many of the religious right to condemn homosexuality is Leviticus 18:22, which reads, "Thou shalt not lie with mankind as thou lie with womankind, it is an abomination." Leviticus is one of the earlier books of the bible and contains many proclamations and old Jewish laws. These include things like not eating shellfish and pork and ranges to bizarre stuff like that shaving is against God's will and that rabbits are evil.

In the new testament, Jesus never even mentions homosexuality, and as Jack pointed out, Christians believe that all the old Jewish laws were nullified when Jesus died for our sins.

Radical Christians need to realize that they can't have it both ways. They can't preach they ways of Jesus and then reach back into the old testament just when it's convenient for them. Jesus brought forth a new era in which we are all to love our neighbors as ourselves.

  9.  JustinDickinson | December 4, 2008 @ 7:22 am

    Very well put.

  10.  del sarto | December 4, 2008 @ 8:05 am

but i believe that's what they are trying to say, that the bible is not a rulebook otherwise we wouldnt do many of the things that we do today. they are making fun of the people who believe that it is a rulebook, people who use it as an excuse to push their personal values and agendas into other people's lives. this is not a video against the bible, its against the people who use it to spread hate and intolerance, which is not the message that jesus left for us.

  11.  JackAtak08 | December 4, 2008 @ 8:35 am

Well, if you want a new Testament example, there are a couple. Acts 15, and Romans 1. And there are more than that.. I think Galations 1 has something too.

And just for the record, I do not agree with gay marriage. There is a fair amount of scripture to back it up. If I was asked to vote on it, I would vote against it. However you won't see me up in arms if it gets passed. I think Christians get too caught up in being anti gay marriage, when they should be pro- spreading the gospel. The gospel of truth, and hope, and change..

  12.  JackAtak08 | December 4, 2008 @ 8:39 am

And also, I would like to point out that the reason Prop 8 didn't get passed was the overwhelming number of blacks that didn't support it (though they voted for Obama). That and Mormons. I don't personally believe that Mormons are Gospel-sound Christians, sorry if that offends anyone.. But if they are going to talk about Christian extremists, I think there are more Mormon extremists who are against it.

And also, my political standing on the topic is that gay marriage should be decided at a state level, not national. Just in case if anyone was curious where I stood ;-)

  13.  nolahola81 | December 4, 2008 @ 10:35 am

I'm following you on Twitter (I'm nolahola81) and I really dig your blog, because I am a huge HIMYM fan too. The show makes me nostalgic for living in NYC, my home for 3.5 years, and makes me miss my group of friends there. You also gave me (aka: a reader of yours) the idea to befriend Carter Bays on facebook, but I'm too nervous to write him and in awe.

  14.  Chrysee | December 5, 2008 @ 1:28 am

Well you can certainly vote however you want and believe whatever you like. But I fail to understand, especially as an atheist, why the rules of your religion get to determine laws that affect me?

  15.  del sarto | December 5, 2008 @ 1:32 am

i think if two people love each other and want to make their union official they should be allowed to! its not like gays want to get married before the church, they want the government, which is supposed to be laic (at least there in the us, but the same happens in my country and many others), to recognize their union. it's their right.

i think jesus was awesome, i pray, i believe in god, but i think that using a 2000 year old book to set the rules of how we should live is just silly and irrational.

i hope they find a way to stop proposition 8.
neil is great, he is so talented. i was delighted when i saw him singing in this video. the best of luck to him, and to everybody who's fighting for this cause.

  16.  Ana Mendes | December 5, 2008 @ 2:03 am

Hi, I'm following this blog for some time now, but I never posted anything… Neil is great in this video!!!
And I'm following you on twitter (delennbr)

  17.  JackAtak08 | December 5, 2008 @ 3:06 am

Clearly you haven't read the Bible because if you did you would know it's a living book. So much of it is relative to today. Putting other people first before yourself, the golden rule, caring for people in their time of need.. these are all things in the Bible from 2000 years ago. Do they not apply to today? If you don't want to follow the "rulebook" because it's old, then I guess I'm going to have to say that's dumb.

BTW, just "believing in god and praying" doesn't get you into heaven. demons believe in god and they tremble at his sight, i certainly don't see them getting into heaven.

I'm really not trying to cause any trouble I'm just trying to open the eyes to the ignorant about the Bible whenever I can.. I'm not trying to offend anyone.

  18.  benaouioui | December 5, 2008 @ 3:58 am

that was awesome! Great music and writing! I'm french and i'm shocked that religious is so mixed with american political decisions. In France, we have something called "laïcité" that separate religion from state. I think it's a big part of a democracy and very usefull to make fair judgement on various matters like gay marriage. The president shouldn't be talking about god or the Bible, it's not their place. I mean, i'm sure all americans aren't christians or believe in God, so how could they feel represented by a president that publicly swear on a Bible the first day of office.
I hope my english is understadable, sorry if it's not.

  19.  triplestar | December 5, 2008 @ 4:09 am

I love that video! I found it the other day and have watched it repeatedly!

And I'm one of the recent Twitter adds. I've only posted here a few times, but I've followed the site pretty actively and love your recaps. Keep up the great work :)

  20.  del sarto | December 5, 2008 @ 4:56 am

okay jackatak, i cant really keep this conversation going you believe in things that i dont, and i just cant reason with someone who thinks that im going to hell because i dont follow your rules. actually im quite offended by that, but it doesnt matter.

my concept of "heaven" is apparently quite different than yours and i dont believe in demons, i believe that god is within us, and that we can find the right path by ourselves…. by being compassionate, caring and altruist, by not judging others and loving everyone around us. and i dont need a priest or a book to tell me how to behave.

i respect the bible, but it's a really old and big book, it contradicts itself many times, it isnt meant to be read as a rulebook (just like you said at first, and then you contradicted yourself). and laws shouldnt be made based on it. governments shouldnt work to favour a certain religious orientation or another.

and im not gay. i do have dear gay and lesbian friends, who i love and admire and respect. and i wish they had the same rights as i do. its 2008 not the middle ages.

  21.  KJO | December 5, 2008 @ 6:25 am

On the contrary, your English is trés bien! There is a supposed separation of church and state, but the line gets blurred so much by the need for politicians to win the votes of the white christian majority.

  22.  María | December 5, 2008 @ 7:05 am

I think I saw Sarah Chalke too in there (at 2.10 clearly). It was hilarious xD
    I'm following you at twitter, I'm ohmaryg…

  23.  blarg | December 5, 2008 @ 7:50 am

yeah sarah chalke is in there. so is Allison Janney, Andy Richter, John C. Reilly, Kathy Najimy, Jack Black and Margaret Cho. I recognize the black woman in the big hat with the yellow flower on it, but i cant remember what her name is. i think thats everyone i recognized in it, anyone else spot someone i missed?

  24.  spot | December 5, 2008 @ 8:05 am

    Maya Rudolph…

  25.  ashlee | December 5, 2008 @ 11:43 am

"You know you’re a huge star when Jesus needs an introduction but you don’t."

    That is THE perfect quote

    Thanks for posting this JD

  26.  JackAtak08 | December 6, 2008 @ 10:18 am

Finding the right path by yourself is a Biblical idea
1 John 2:27 I think it is says that

Didn't you ever know what Jesus preached about? It's everything you just said. Not judging others.. loving everyone around us. In fact, Jesus was the first person to say love your neighbor as you love yourself, and then more! Jesus spoke on being compassionate probably more than he did anything else

The bible says you don't need a priest to tell you how to behave (see 1 john 2:27).

Who cares that its old. Old doesn't make it wrong. 2+2=4 is an old fact.. but it doesn't make it wrong.

I'd like you to point out it's contradictions that you speak of.. and where I contradicted myself

Governments don't work to satisfy the certain religions.. Proposition 8 didn't pass because of the majority of the people didn't want it. They have reasons why, and I don't think it's safe to assume it all had to do with religion.

I'm not gay either.. and I don't care that other people are gay, so long as I don't get hassled about it.

And btw, people were gay way before the middle ages. In fact, gay men in Rome had way more rights than gay men do now.

  27.  benaouioui | December 8, 2008 @ 1:51 am

Well you are exagerating. French people aren't forced to act like atheists. But you have to admit that religion has always been a source of conflict (that's why i'm not a big fan of it ;) ) so I think leaving that stuff out of school is a good thing. Kids can have crosses or any little signs (I wore a cross during all my school time and never had a problem). They just prohibit big visible signs like a hijab or a kippa (don't know if it's an english word). It's just a french value, and everybody's very attached to it. For example, when Nicolas Sarkozy talked about the Christian church, every newspapers went nuts. The separation between Church and State is very deeply inked in french minds…

  28.  benaouioui | December 8, 2008 @ 1:52 am

But that's not my point. What is strange to me is the fact that religion is spread in every aspect of the american politics even in the Constitution, if i'm not mistaking. I didn't know the President could take his oath on Koran or other books, that's good to know. However, I can't see the point of doing it except confusing people.
Also, the fact that in most presidencial speeches god is mentionned, is something very hard for me to understand. I will be shocked if it was in France.

But i guess it's because the two countries have different history and even if we share a lot of the same values, some stuff aren't the same.

Wow, this made me work on my english. Again, I hope it's understandable. I did the best i could, but i'm gonna get better…

  29.  Chrissy | December 8, 2008 @ 3:48 am

I enjoyed every second of it. Neil is amazing!

Oh JD, I also love the quote "You know you’re a huge star when Jesus needs an introduction but you don’t."

  30.  Humberto | December 8, 2008 @ 4:33 am

@benaouioui, why do you say your English is bad? You speak English better than half of America and I'm not joking. Some days I spend more time at work speaking Spanish than English.

I think the US Constitution does not mention or spread Christianity, but many Americans wrongly think it does. The first Muslim elected to the US Congress, Keith Ellison, used a Koran, while some Buddhist and other congressmen used no book at all. However, many right-wing Americans protested this and want to force them to use a bible.

Personally, I agree with you and wish American politicians would not use religion in their speeches. We should become more secular like the French and let NPH get married. However, many people think that prohibiting people from expressing their religion in any way is a form of oppression too and that I agree.

  31.  Humberto | December 8, 2008 @ 11:40 am

Placing your hand on a bible in America is not mandatory. You can take your oath on a bible, Koran, Torah or nothing at all if you want although KJO is right because if Obama does not use a bible it would cause protests. Americans believe you can express your religion almost anytime you want, but the French make people shut up about their religion like at schools that prohibit wearing of hijab or crosses. So what is worse: America where people express their religion too much or France where people are forced to act like atheists?
