Placing your hand on a bible in America is not mandatory. You can take your oath on a bible, Koran, Torah or nothing at all if you want although KJO is right because if Obama does not use a bible it would cause protests. Americans believe you can express your religion almost anytime you want, but the French make people shut up about their religion like at schools that prohibit wearing of hijab or crosses. So what is worse: America where people express their religion too much or France where people are forced to act like atheists?

@benaouioui, why do you say your English is bad? You speak English better than half of America and I'm not joking. Some days I spend more time at work speaking Spanish than English.

I think the US Constitution does not mention or spread Christianity, but many Americans wrongly think it does. The first Muslim elected to the US Congress, Keith Ellison, used a Koran, while some Buddhist and other congressmen used no book at all. However, many right-wing Americans protested this and want to force them to use a bible.

Personally, I agree with you and wish American politicians would not use religion in their speeches. We should become more secular like the French and let NPH get married. However, many people think that prohibiting people from expressing their religion in any way is a form of oppression too and that I agree.

But that's not my point. What is strange to me is the fact that religion is spread in every aspect of the american politics even in the Constitution, if i'm not mistaking. I didn't know the President could take his oath on Koran or other books, that's good to know. However, I can't see the point of doing it except confusing people.
Also, the fact that in most presidencial speeches god is mentionned, is something very hard for me to understand. I will be shocked if it was in France.

But i guess it's because the two countries have different history and even if we share a lot of the same values, some stuff aren't the same.

Wow, this made me work on my english. Again, I hope it's understandable. I did the best i could, but i'm gonna get better…

Well you are exagerating. French people aren't forced to act like atheists. But you have to admit that religion has always been a source of conflict (that's why i'm not a big fan of it ) so I think leaving that stuff out of school is a good thing. Kids can have crosses or any little signs (I wore a cross during all my school time and never had a problem). They just prohibit big visible signs like a hijab or a kippa (don't know if it's an english word). It's just a french value, and everybody's very attached to it. For example, when Nicolas Sarkozy talked about the Christian church, every newspapers went nuts. The separation between Church and State is very deeply inked in french minds…

Didn't you ever know what Jesus preached about? It's everything you just said. Not judging others.. loving everyone around us. In fact, Jesus was the first person to say love your neighbor as you love yourself, and then more! Jesus spoke on being compassionate probably more than he did anything else

The bible says you don't need a priest to tell you how to behave (see 1 john 2:27).

Who cares that its old. Old doesn't make it wrong. 2+2=4 is an old fact.. but it doesn't make it wrong.

Governments don't work to satisfy the certain religions.. Proposition 8 didn't pass because of the majority of the people didn't want it. They have reasons why, and I don't think it's safe to assume it all had to do with religion.

I'm not gay either.. and I don't care that other people are gay, so long as I don't get hassled about it.

And btw, people were gay way before the middle ages. In fact, gay men in Rome had way more rights than gay men do now.

I recognize the black woman in the big hat with the yellow flower on it, but i cant remember what her name is. i think thats everyone i recognized in it, anyone else spot someone i missed?
