Season 3 Episode 17: The Goat Discussion

goat-hero.jpg

So that’s what happened with the goat. Sort of. We did see the fallout from the BRo hook up last week. In fact, we picked up right where we left off. An odd episode with an emotional moment, a guest star, and a brand new mystery, The Goat had it all.

What Was Good

I like seeing the human side of Barney, even if he doesn’t know how to deal with his guilt. I really felt bad for him, even if he did have it coming. He knew what he did with Robin was wrong and his anxiety over Ted finding out was noble.

goat-hotdogs.jpg

Marshall was great in this episode. I like how he and Lily are the parental voice of reason for the other characters when they go awry. I loved the dynamic created by him being Barney’s “lawyer”. I also love all the random details and suggestions surrounding what exactly Barney does for a living.

goat-goat.jpg

The bit with the goat wasn’t legendary, but I loved the ominous zoom-in each time they mentioned Missy. What was legendary was the return of that horny toad perched atop our innocent Lilypad. Her grilling Robin for details of Barney sex was hilarious—I guess it’s not just married men who have fantasies.

Robin didn’t do a lot this week but what she did was good. I like the growth she’s shown as a person and that she couldn’t hold that info back from Ted.

goat-ranjit.jpg

Finally, the biggest laugh tonight for me was the appearance of Ranjit. I love that guy. His chastising of Barney and encouragement for Ted’s violence was excellent. He saw the legendary theft and presentation of the smurf penis blue french horn and he was there for the New Year’s kiss—no wonder he emphasized with Ted’s feelings of betrayal.

What Was Bad

goat-tedyelling.jpg

I wasn’t totally sold on the Ted and Barney fight. It could have been just because I don’t want to see the two of them not speaking but I felt like Ted overreacted just a hair. Plus, who punches a guy in the sprouts? Seriously. Other than that, I don’t have too many complaints other than it’s getting frustrating not seeing Stella even though they keep mentioning her.

goat-barnibus.jpg

Oh, and I think I would’ve liked the flashback to Washington and Franklin better if I hadn’t read spoilers and knew it was coming.

Favorite Moments

goat-highfive.jpg

  • “Who is this sad, self-loathing idiot who sleeps with Barney Stinson?”
“You usually say that out loud.”
  • “I just slept with my best friend’s ex.”
“I just slept with my ex’s really good friend.”
    “Best friend”
  • “Right-click, save as, into the b-peg folder.”
  • “Hey Robin, guess who nailed a chick from Metro News 1 last night?”
    *Luke-warm five*
  • “What was it like? Penetrating that barrier?”
  • “You want my xbox?”
    “She has a name Ted!”
  • “Did you break a law? Oh my god, Robin knows you slept with her right?”
  • “How could you sleep with Barney? That’s so gross. Was it amazing? Did he have devices? Hot wax? Did he tie you to something? Is he all smooth down there?”
  • “My mom’s coming into town next month, you wanna try to nail her too?”
  • In the montage of Ted’s many instances of honoring the bro code I loved the grabber out the window for condoms and credit cards.

Barney’s Vocab Word of the Week

Devil’s Threeway - the less desirable “two guys, one girl” threesome.
Although, if JD on Scrubs is to be believed, a devil’s threesome is when there are three girls. I like that scenario better.

Closing

Say what you will about Ted and Barney’s fight. If Ted had been OK with it, he would’ve gone down as the biggest pansy in TV history. We’ve all reacted harshly in a fit of emotion, I’d bet that Ted and Barney make nice eventually.

Season one saw Ted’s pursuit of Robin ending with their union amid Marshall and Lily’s split. Season two was Ted and Robin together and ended with their break up amidst the marriage of LAME. From Robin, Ted went to Barney and re-bro’d. Season three has been about outlaw Ted and, it seems, will end with another breakup—Barney and Ted—but what will the big union be?

One might say it could be Barney, since we find out he “pops an interesting question” to Abby. My money is on Ted and Stella. Did you notice that Bays and Thomas took a page from the Rug-Pulling Jerks Guide to Screenwriting that the Lost staff lives by and gave us the answer to one big question only to ask another, bigger one at the end of the episode? I’m talking of course about the allusion that within a year’s time Robin will be living in Ted and LAME’s apartment. While I don’t know for sure, my money would be on Robin taking Ted’s old room since Ted moved out to live with Stella. What do you guys think?

J.D.’s description of a Devil’s Threesome was not three girls but also 2 guys and a girl. Just thought you would like to know.

  2.  J | April 29, 2008 @ 12:16 am

and the allusion to Robin moving in is because Marshall and Lily move out to Dowisetrepla… So we get the odd couple.

Im basing this on the fact that Scrubs is about to be announced as having a season 8 on ABC and the lack of Chalke’s character in a show about meeting the mother…

  3.  natsirt | April 29, 2008 @ 12:45 am

The build up to the goat in the bathroom made the big reveal almost as disappointing as the third slap. The only thing that made the end of that episode worthwhile was the reveal that Robin will be living in Ted’s apartment in a year. Which just means all the “I want Robin to be the mother” fans have more fuel to throw on the fire.

Horny Lily was awesome once again. Marshall’s inability to handle speaking with Robin was hilarious as was Barney’s offer to pay Marshall “a little” to be his lawyer and Marshall quickly jumping on the opportunity. I agree that Ranjit was awesome (and has been awesome in every episode in which he has appeared). Shouldn’t it be a devil’s tricycle?

I don’t understand why Ted wasn’t more angry with Robin. I can understand the anger at Barney (although it is Barney so should he really be surprised?) but there would also be some anger directed towards Robin.

And in Barney’s defense, Ted gave Barney permission to go after Robin in Zip, Zip, Zip.

  4.  tt | April 29, 2008 @ 1:56 am

I think Robin scored some credit by telling Ted first. And against Barney, Ted and Robin hadn’t dated for a year when he was given permission in ZZZ.

  5.  Ranier | April 29, 2008 @ 2:49 am

i think you just spoilered me about Abby and Barney.

great episode. loved how they manage to keep the mistery of the goat for another season.

Ranjit is awesome, he saying all that things in Bangaladesh language was hilarious.

The scene of Franklin and Washington was a little bit ‘Scrubs-like’ but i loved it.

  6.  Payel | April 29, 2008 @ 4:29 am

I think one can not be mad at his x-gf for sleeping with some one else. after all their relation is over. and one can not even get angry on a friend for sleeping with other friend. so in both the way Ted couldn’t become mad on Robin, even if he was it was best not to express. But anyone will be mad on his friend(/bro) for sleeping with his x-girl friend. and thats what Ted did….
though I don’t feel that Barney has done any thing wrong, but still ted’s anger is justified.

And one more thing, the goat part was so so soooo stupid!!!!

  7.  Marcy | April 29, 2008 @ 4:34 am

A very “interesting” episode, that makes me feel rather uneasy about what is coming to come next.

It was great to see a guit ridden, nervous Barney. He does have an emotional side to him, and it´s nice that it was shown. The scene in the bar when Barney and Robin pretend that nothing happend was hillarious and got some “The Yips” flair to it.

Also, the hints about what Barney does for a living, were great. War with Portugal? Just fantastic! And it´s even funnier when you think about the fact that Barney states in his blog that he is the boss of the boss of the president of France.

And Marshall´s hair seems to be getting back to normal! Wahoo for that!

As for Ted´s reaction, well, I´m wondering why he didn´t say anything to Robin, but was so mad at Barney. Now, I understand that he was mad, that´s not the point, but to be so understanding towards Robin? Mhm… I´d really like to see Ted talking to Lily and Marshall about the entire Robin/Barney thing. Since neither Marshall nor Lily were mad or anything, it would be quite interesting. Same goes for another talk with Robin.

But talking about Robin living in Ted and LAME´s apartament next year, it was Lily who brought the goat (and we can assume, that this part of the story did happen), and what I am thinking right now is, why on earth should she bring the goat to Ted´s apartament instead to her own? My conclusion is that, just like JD said, Robin is going to move into Ted´s old room and not LAME´s. Another thing is, if Ted is fine enough with Robin to either live with him or with Lily and Marshall, it would be odd for him not making up with Barney somehow. I mean, the´ve both done the same thing, so to punish both in so completely different ways would be strange.

    We´ll have to see.

BTW, Barney’s Chinese when he’s on the phone before shredding his phone was, “No, the Koreans don’t know. Don’t worry, don’t worry!”

I personally am a little weirded out by the constant reference to Stella, yet Chalke’s not in any new scenes. Does referencing Stella add to the story in any way?

  9.  toomuchfreetime | April 29, 2008 @ 7:44 am

I have to say, I am impressed with Bays and Thomas. They are doing a great job of creating a plot line that could end this season if must and still be a solid ending to the show (probably Stella’s the mother (they still need to explain the 30 year old daughter in 2030 though), Robin and Barney become friends with benefits when Robin is in town from living all over the world. With the one exception of what are they going to do with a goat for at least year? Send it to the farm with Robin’s dogs?) but still leaving the door open for new story lines if they get renewed (Stella’s not the mother, Barney and Robin put this behind them with the occasional humors reference) .

Loved the bro code stuff, but the lawyer in me was bothered:
    - Why wasn’t it a violation of the Bro code when Ted signed to the girl Barney was hitting on that Barney was lying and she should give him a fake number?
    - Barney’s stealing of all Marshal’s girls has to be a violation.

On a side note, if not only did they try to have Barney speak Chinese, but he was actually able to pull it off intonations and all, that is LEGENDARY. (The intonations are impossible to get right; that they would spend so much time on something only a handful of people would appreciate is impressive.)

  10.  Ike | April 29, 2008 @ 7:50 am

I disliked this episode overall. There were good moments, but when you put it together ti was just a big let down. The opening was great and led me to believe this would be a funny and real episode. And it had the funny moments and all the characters dealt with the news in a believable way. It was nice to see Ted hold up to the Bro code and see Barney have feelings, and I completely understand how Ted is not mad at Robin, but at Barney.

But the constant reference to Stella and not seeing her is annoying. Chalke is great and works well with the cast, but they should have got someone who could have made at least a cameo on the roof. The 2 year build up and 5 or so mentions in the episode led to the biggest let down in the series. How could you get the birthdays mixed up, how is the same goat at 2 parties?. I hope there is an amazing explanation next year. And I don’t like them just nonchalantly throwing out that Robin is living in the apartment next year. Amazing how 3 small things kind of just ruined this episode for me.

  11.  High Hoper | April 29, 2008 @ 8:00 am

I loved it. Pretty serious but still had amazing moments.

I think the goat is only in the 31th birthday, and not in the 30th. He was confused.

What a finale!!!! The three episodes left are gonna be pretty explanatory and … wow…

  12.  ky | April 29, 2008 @ 8:13 am

I agree that the opener to this episode led me to think it would be poignant and funny, but it fell slightly short on both counts. Yes, Barney always talks about his bro code but the Ben Franklin/George Washington flashback was stupid and not at all comical. Lily questions to Robin about Barney’s sexual skills was great BUT Lily should know whether he’s “smooth down there” since he was nude while she painted him, even if she left his “down there” out of the protrait. I just wished that Bays and Thomas hadn’t taken such a good premise (that initally reminded me of some of my fave S1 and S2 episodes and dumbed it down). The constant Stella references are getting creepy, and the goat not actually doing anything made me angry.
I did not hate this episode as it def had some good scenes (BRo in bed morning after was legendary), but overall, it was merely ok when I think it had greatness potential.

  13.  Misha | April 29, 2008 @ 8:16 am

I thought the episode was great. Good way to bring in Ranjit and I guess we will have to wait another year for the story of what the goat did.

Ted’s reaction to Barney was pretty perfect in my eyes. It’s not as if this is a girl that he was with for a few weeks. They were together for a year and Ted believed that she was all he wanted. The difference between his reaction to Robin and Barney seemed also justified. He was probably more disappointed than angry with Robin, then had some time to stew about it and finally exploded on Barney. Friends or not, you can’t tell your ex-girlfriend who to hook up with, but you can expect your friends not to hook up with your ex.

I think Robin moves in with Ted after LAME move out to their apartment. I just can’t see them “fixing a crooked floor” for over a year. Also, I think this season ends with one of Barney’s moments of awesomeness towards his friends to help Ted out, making Ted realize that he still needs Barney.

  14.  john d'arc | April 29, 2008 @ 8:26 am

i’m still sorta wondering about the logistics of the Barney-Robin hookup. How did they get all the way from the couch to the bedroom, disrobe, sex, without once stopping to consider Ted or even the Bro Code?

Also, when did Ted and Robin go to Vermont? I thought they never got a chance to go cause Marshall was mopey? Or was it Marshall and Lily that didn’t go when Ted was with Victoria? Or just a casualty of the writers’ strike? Just like James’ gay wedding?

This episode was good. I thought this season was hitting a lull, but maybe it’s starting to pick up. Not too keen on Britney’s return seemingly shoe horned into the plot, but whatever. We’ll deal with it when it happens.

I totally missed the “Robin living there” thing. Though I guess it means that LAME really do eventually move to the smelly slanted apartment.

  15.  john d'arc | April 29, 2008 @ 8:28 am

oh, and how is Stella going to all these things? I thought she had a kid she couldn’t/wouldn’t get away from?

  16.  john d'arc | April 29, 2008 @ 8:37 am

also, I’m seeing somewhere that theoretically, the goat was only at the 31st bday, and Future Ted is mixing his memories (part of what makes this show great is that they can do things like that).

Still, that is weird, cause, that means Ted doesn’t not live in the apartment next year. So he doesn’t find the love of his life and move out any time soon. I think. I don’t work well with nonlinearity. If Robin lives in BK, and LAME live in Dowisetrepla, and Ted were to move out with a lady, then who would be in the apartment that would bring the goat there, or allow Lily to bring the goat there via them? Also, Lily is a teacher next year, so she doesn’t seemingly find a big bag of money to rid LAME of their monetary woes.

  17.  JD | April 29, 2008 @ 9:25 am

I was under the impression that Marshall and Lily will not be moving to Dowisetrepla since Marshall lost his job.

Like John said, I don’t think there was a goat at all at Ted’s 30th. Since most of the episode Ted wasn’t in the apartment, it’s realistic that if he moves out by his 31st and if they still had the party for him on the roof he could mix up the memories when retelling the story years later.

The whole point was that the bro code exists at a higher order than anything else. That’s why Ted could deal with Robin but not forgive Barney. Like Ted said, it’ll be weird with Robin, but Barney was his bro.

If Scrubs gets picked up for an eighth season I can’t imagine Sarah Chalke not reprising her role as Eliot Reed (besides, her and JD have to end up together. just me?) Now I’m not sure what kind of contract conflict there would be but it’s not unrealistic to think she could appear on both shows.

  18.  Nilou | April 29, 2008 @ 9:41 am

Anyone knows what is the music at the very end? it’s awesome.

  19.  Elizabeth | April 29, 2008 @ 9:51 am

I liked this episode. The ex-Box joke took me a few seconds to get, making it my favorite - because it was funny two ways!! I agree that it seems like Ted is the one who moves out. Obviously Barney & Ted will make up, as Neil Patrick Harris isn’t going anywhere. But JD raises the bigger question - why integrate Stella’s character throughout the ep, if Eliot Reed still needs to do rounds next season? I don’t want to watch a whole season on HIMYM with vague references to Ted’s relationship….

  20.  The Coolest Gifts | April 29, 2008 @ 9:54 am

@toomuchfreetime “they still need to explain the 30 year old daughter in 2030″

What 30 year old daughter? The girl who plays the future daughter just turned 21.

  21.  Dave | April 29, 2008 @ 10:03 am

That goat has the ‘crazy eyes’!

I don’t think Robin will move in with Ted next year. It will probably be something temporary. Maybe she’s on sabbatical back from Argentina or something. She needs a place to stay, Ted’s nice guy, it happens to fall over his 31st birthday. Or her apartment is being painted. No big deal.

I still believe that Barney falls for Robin.

  22.  toomuchfreetime | April 29, 2008 @ 10:15 am

    @The Coolest Gifts
In 2030, Ted would have a 30-year old (step)daughter because in 2008 Stella has an 8 year old daughter. I suppose it could be the girl on the coach, but if they say that she is 30 while the guy is 20 (since as of 2008 he isn’t born yet) I’m going to be pissed. Also they could just have her off with the mom while Ted is telling the younger kids, but for me personal that would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

    @everyone
Has the show been renewed yet? If not my guess is they keep referencing Stella so in the series finally they can say she is the mother and for whatever reason they cannot get Chalke to come back on for these last few episodes.

  23.  toomuchfreetime | April 29, 2008 @ 10:16 am

BTW in my previous post, that stuff about the 30 year old daughter would only apply if Stella was the mother.

  24.  Marcy | April 29, 2008 @ 11:23 am

What I just realized is, whenever Ted was speaking about the apartament in this episode, he calld it simply apartament. When Lily brings the goat home, he says “I don´t think having a goat in the apartament i a good idea,” instead of “our” apartament. Also, if he was still living here, wouldn´t he be more upset?
At the end of the episode, he says “Robin wasn´t living here at my 30th birthday,” instead of, say, “Robin wasn´t living with me at my 30th birthday”.
Now, I suppose I´m reading far too much into this, but these could be hints. Especially sinde I simply don´t believe that LAME will ever move into the Dowisatrepla apartament. I´m still waiting for Marshall to “lawyer” the real estate agents and get out of this far too expensive “adventure”.

  25.  db | April 29, 2008 @ 11:30 am

I have to admit, I read the spoilers on this site beforehand, and I wondered how the writers were going to pull off any sort of comedy regarding BRo and Ted, because it seemed like such a serious subject, which i still believe it is. But I think they did it wonderfully. I like how towards the end, Barney was still trying to quell ted’s anger by hinting his plans for an awesome 30th in Vegas.

Overall, very satisfied with the episode, even though I read the spoilers. That last bit about robin living in the apartment made me drop my jaw. I’m so curious.

  26.  Rosie | April 29, 2008 @ 11:46 am

Oh God, those last ten minutes broke my heart.

I was a bit angry with Ted towards the end. I realize that Barney was in the wrong, but Ted’s reaction to him and his reaction to Robin were SO unproportional. “Oh, okay ex-girlfriend. Everything is fine a dandy, no worries. Could you excuse me a second, while I go CASTRATE BARNEY EMOTIONALLY?!”

Also: Barney and Robin are not done. It may just be the nagging BRo fangirl in me, but I can see they’re not over this. Barney’s, “Oh yeah, it’s over. Totally done. This is the end. Yeah. So over.” couldn’t just be about breaking the Bro Code. Jeez, I just want those crazy kids together.

  27.  Mallorymike | April 29, 2008 @ 12:39 pm

The more I think about it, the more I really like this episode. I’m all for straight-up comedy, but character-driven episodes are the most satisfying to me.

That being said, what happened to Robin’s giggling when she lies? It has to come up again. They made such a big deal about it in “The Bracket”, it can’t just suddenly go away.

Also, is it just me or was NPH looking extra-hot this week? Not just in his shirtless scenes, but throughout the whole episode he was really bringing on the sexy.

  28.  J | April 29, 2008 @ 12:43 pm

Ted’s response was built on a lot of different things, this was just the tipping point, I think he realized that Barney would still be doing the horrible stuff he does to other people to him, When, if they were bros, he would not even thought about it.

  29.  JD | April 29, 2008 @ 1:23 pm

@Rosie Ha! It wasn’t just emotionally that Ted castrated Barney

Also, I too had the feeling that BRo might not be over. Remember, when Marshall asked Barney if he felt bad about sleeping with Robin Barney said “no, that was awesome”. He only felt bad about sleeping with Ted.

  30.  AF | April 29, 2008 @ 1:24 pm

I love Horny!Lily. The questions she asked Robin were just funny.

In response to the “wouldn’t she know if he was shaved” question…the events of “Columns” happened a year ago and there’s a possibility that Barney changed the way he looks “down there” since then. Also…Lily might have refilled her hard drive with d-pegs (Courtesy of Marshall).

The goat thing was really lame.

    And Ranjit kicks butt.

One of my favorite parts of the episode was when Barney said: “Hey Robin, guess who nailed a chick from Metro News 1 last night?” and she returned his high-five.

It was also cool to see Barney’s emotional side as well as more of what he does for a living.

  31.  Paulo | April 29, 2008 @ 2:12 pm

Totally loved the montage of Ted honoring the Bro-Code! Specially that avalanche/transexual dancer bit.

  32.  dckatiebug | April 29, 2008 @ 2:28 pm

I completely loved this episode; it reminded me of the “back nine” episodes of season 1 (which I think is the best “streak” of episodes of HIMYM). Of course Ted was going to overreact (was that Teding out or Teding up?) when he find out about Robin and Barney. Both because he felt betrayed by Barney and because he has residual feelings for Robin. The scene in the limo broke my heart, but it felt very real. I’m sure that Barney and Ted will work their issues out, but this was a bridge they had to cross (and which has been in their path really since the St. Patrick’s Day eppy).

But it was poignant and funny (all the Barney and Marshall stuff was hysterical, and I love love love Horney Lily) and wonderful. I cannot wait for the final three episodes of season 3, and I really cannot wait for the confirmation for season four!

  33.  Courtney | April 29, 2008 @ 2:34 pm

Anyone else notice how weird Robin was while Horny Lily was asking her about Barney in the sack? Yeah, BRo isn’t finished. Robin didn’t look like she was too grossed out to talk about it, or just being demure. It was played like she had some stuff on her mind when it came to Barney. Interesting…

  34.  Diana | April 29, 2008 @ 4:34 pm

@dave - the goat DOES have crazy eyes! it was a bit creepy.

Did anyone also notice that it wasn’t
    “Robin wasn’t living there then”
    it was
“Robin wasn’t living HERE then” (forgive my paraphrasing)
So I guess future Ted still lives in that apartment?

It hurt my heart a little when Ted said that Barney belonged in the box of stuff he didn’t have any use for.

  35.  J | April 29, 2008 @ 5:37 pm

    @Diana

No thats reading too much into it, future ted talks about how they dont live there anymore in… i think the beginning of the duel.

  36.  Nat Gertler | April 29, 2008 @ 6:06 pm

What Barney did was wrong only in that it violated his own code. Beyond that, treating your ex-girlfriend as some sort of property is just wrong.

I was kind of hoping that Ted would act like a man rather than like a sitcom character about it; I wouldn’t be surprised if it were to develop in that direction. I suspect that Robin will make that case…

  37.  have_you_met_sean | April 29, 2008 @ 6:31 pm

i was curious…does anyone know if future Ted has ever referred to Robin as just “Robin” instead of “Aunt Robin”? i dunno if i just noticed it at the end of this episode since i really want ted and robin to end up together so i’m trying to come up with ways Carter and Bays can still end it that way. one of my friends was discussing the theory that future Ted is telling the story to not just to his kids but perhaps some nieces and nephews off screen so when he says “aunt robin” he is addressing those nieces and nephews and not his children.

  38.  Ae | April 29, 2008 @ 7:30 pm

I don’t think the season finale is Ted and Stella but Ted poping the question to Robin and she might even say ‘YES’. So we get teased on how Robin dumps him later since she is not the mother. I think next week episode will have Ted and Stella’s breakup. Robin is moving in with Ted and that’s why the goat was chewing her stuff on his 30th birthday not his 31st. That comments about his 31 seems like he was correcting a slip of the tongue. They have been building the goat on his 30th for 2 seasons. Saying the goat was his 31 now seems lame plus they would of have to kept the goat for another year.

  39.  High Hoper | April 29, 2008 @ 7:46 pm

Or simply be wrong, It happens all the time… He believes the goat incident happens on the 30th birthday when it truly happens on the 31th.

He can’t remember exactly all the stuff, like blahblah’s name.

  40.  TheMix | April 29, 2008 @ 8:10 pm

@almost everyone - wow, you all are seriously getting a bit too wrapped up in logistics in my opinion. It’s a TV show. Good lord, they’re already doing a pretty damn good job with continuity. I never understood why people get so caught up in stuff quite so menial. Generally I would put the relationships between people on the top of the pyramid of importance, but people seem to throw logistical minutia up there as well.

I liked this episode a lot, especially Ted punching Barney in the nards. It was a dick move, but then again, sleeping with Ted’s ex-girlfriend wasn’t exactly solid. If a friend did that to me….somebody’d be getting punched somewhere unpleasant.

I too was a little confused with the reaction between Ted and Robin vs. the one to Barney. My thought process went along these lines….either Ted still has feelings for Robin and is just trying to pretend at this point. OR, he just genuinely doesn’t give a crap what she does anymore. Personally, I think he’s got good reason to be more mad at Barney anyhow. Robin is the ex…she’s expected to be a b****. If she’s not, all the better, but Barney is always flaunting the Bro-code, and he was the one that broke it. He even broke what could be considered the Cardinal Rule, of sorts. We all assume Barney’s going to be an ass, but we never assume that he would ever seriously break the Bro-code.

    My two favorite moments:

    1. Marshall’s first Minnesota reference in a while…”Duluth mental hospital”

    2. Robin looking really hot, then telling Marshall to wait to open his can so she can get out of the “splash zone”…..then the can promptly exploditating all over him, and him running to the bedroom.

I have to agree with TheMix on this one. Though I love discussing and dissecting HIMYM to a degree, I don’t let it get too far into the minute things. But hey it takes diff’rent strokes to move the world (spelling mistake intentional to those born after 1980 lol!)

Loved the episode. Great character development, great acting and the best consistency of one liners I have heard all season! (I found Washington saying *I have to go to me D.C.* quite funny). And can I just say one thing from a fans point of view? THANK GOD for the return of Marshall!!!!

The Stella references don’t bother me. Even if we don’t see Chalke again this season, or at all for that matter, it’s nice to know that Ted and Stella are together even for a little bit.

Robin in the blue outfit in McLaren’s - HOT!!!!! Everyone did a great job this episode, making the characters feel “real”. Ted’s reaction to Barney wasn’t surprising at all. Let’s not forget that Barney was his friend before Robin came into the picture and no matter how romances go in one’s life, you expect a certain amount of respect from your true friends.

Look at it from Ted’s perspective. He just found out the guy who calls himself his best friend slept with the woman who Ted seriously thought was the love of his life. Then that friend decides to take him on a trip to Vegas to prove how awesome a friend he is (but in actuality to assuage his guilt at sleeping with his best friend’s ex) and in the process being a jerk to their mutual friends who have been planning a surprise party for Ted. Friends who, as a matter of fact, are depending on Barney to do his part and get Ted to the party. How is Barney not an ass from that POV?

As for why Ted wasn’t more angry with Robin, I think part of it was shock and the other part was that you don’t get to tell you ex-girlfriend who she can date and vice-versa. Barney, on the other hand, is his friend and is supposed to have some consideration for Ted’s feelings. Barney himself realizes he crossed the line otherwise he wouldn’t feel so guilty.

I also disagree that Ted is treating Robin like she’s his property. He didn’t tell her what she could or couldn’t do nor did he get angry with her, although I do think that’s coming.

Also, Ted didn’t break the Bro Code when he signed to that girl the truth. That happened when he first met Barney and you can’t break the Bro Code when you’re not bros. As for stealing all of Marshall’s attempted pickups, Barney would argue he was upholding the Bro Code–Barney probably considers Lily his Bro and he knew Marshall wasn’t over her.

Agreed, I wasn’t down with the Ted/Barney fight. I don’t know if it was the acting or what, but it seemed like Ted really wasn’t as upset as we were left to be. And punching a guy in the nards is usually what evens up something like this in the real Bro world because it’s something that NEVER should be done under any circumstances - PERIOD (unless your life is in mortal danger, but a real Bro wouldn’t do that)!!! Maybe it’s because Barney has always seemed like the character that was the odd man out. I never really felt like the group cared all that much whether he was around anyway. There has to be a meaningful relationship for there to be a meaningful breakup, and I never felt like there was much of a relationship.

since we don’t know all of the Bro Code, we can’t really say, but I can’t believe that Barney and Ted haven’t broken the code before.

I admire NPH’s view that this show doesn’t need stunt casting. I love all 5 of them. I love stella too but I’m totally cool that they only mentioned her. I have developed great patience waiting for the ‘mother’. I can wait for her too.

In s03e02 “We’re Not From Here”, Ted mentioned thrice that he’s happy Robin’s happy. I guess that’s why he will never be mad with Robin. However, Barney is still a bro to Ted. Seriously, I can’t believe Ted did all those things for Barney (condoms?Ted??)

I really love the ending! Robin living in the apartment? with Ted? seems too easy… I’m sure something awesome will happen.

According to Barney’s Blog, the Bro Code has 83 amendments!

We should start a list of all the times Barney uses 83:
83: Amendments in the Bro Code
8.3: The number of seconds it takes a girl to know if she’ll sleep with you
83%: According to Ted, the percentage Barney uses whenever he is making up a statistic

  48.  Geri | April 30, 2008 @ 4:14 pm

    @toomuchfreetime

ha ha….I was waiting for someone to notice that! As he was going through the bro code I was waiting for him to mention #83, but when he didn’t I was disappointed……until I read Barney’s blog!

  49.  Geri | April 30, 2008 @ 4:20 pm

Regarding Barney’s Blog - Article #62 is pretty great!

    Article 62:

In the even that two Bros aquire the same target, the Bro with the longer dry spell has dibs. Should the dry spells be of equal length, a game of discreet Roshambo shall determine the outcome.

  50.  LegenDerek | April 30, 2008 @ 9:07 pm

Man some people can’t get over that Robin is not the mother. Also, it feels pretty obvious that Stella isn’t the mother either. (Didn’t we see a picture of the mother as a brunette? I know she could dye it, but that seems unlikely)

Anyway, the mother is the woman from the dating service that Ted stood up to be with Robin. Calling it right now. Also calling shot gun forever!

“Should the dry spells be of equal length, a game of discreet Roshambo shall determine the outcome.”

Haha!! How can a game of Roshambo EVER be discreet?!

Well Jason, it depends on how you play Roshambo. I always think of it as Rock, Paper, Scissors but Urban Dictionary says otherwise:

    1. Roshambo - a game; to kick each other in the balls over an object, last one standing wins.

  53.  jude joshner | May 1, 2008 @ 8:23 pm

for gods sake! no one cares about the music played at the end of s3e17, when ted leaves the limo. plz guys, the music was and still is awesome. forget about all the goat but plz focus on the music. help help help, like beatles song now it seems.

  54.  Tommy | May 2, 2008 @ 3:10 am

Ted reacted like a little girl in this episode (punching another man’s junk, screaming, and dirty looks?), but then again, that’s in character for him.

Robyn in my opinion does not score any points since she was the one who came up with the idea to not tell anyone and pretend that BR never happened in the first place.

As for the who bro sleeping with Ex situation. We have to understand that it’s been one whole year. What is Ted still doing hanging around Robyn (I understand this is the TV sitcom thing to do, to hang around your exs and etc, but still)? If he still has feelings for Robyn, then he’s being a weiner and unable to actually move on in life. In that case, although Barney is still at fault, Ted absolutely deserves it. If he’s actually just platonic friends with Robyn, then there should be no problem.

I’m gonna go with Urban Dictionary on this one.

Where did you learn that Roshambo was Rock, Paper, Scissors??

Loved this episode. And beeing portuguese and living in Lisbon’s metropolitan area, i got a real kick out of Marshall’s lines in Barney’s office.
And even though i know this is just a TV show, i’m not drinking another drop of tap water for the next few months. LOL.

  58.  Ae | May 6, 2008 @ 3:14 pm

So the goat turds that Robin and Marshall saw did not happen?

I have no complaints at all about the story telling until this episode. We can’t take in what we saw except that Barney and Robin had a hookup a week before his 30th birthday. For me, this episode has continuity problems unless they explain it later.

Maybe I’m over thinking (Ted Up), I don’t like it when someone tell a story with a big build up to say oh wait.. I got that wrong. He loses creditability. That goat story for his 31st better be good.

I was wrong about next episode being Ted and Stella breakup.

  59.  JPM | May 6, 2008 @ 8:27 pm

Looks like they sneaked in another appearance of the dark haired stunner Nicole M. Wagner ( ‘mom’ candidate highlighted in predictions pages).

Toward the end of the show during the time the cast was on the roof getting set to surprise Ted—Lily reacts to the Barney/Robin one-nighter with a “That is gross!” comment…Camera cuts to Robin. There are two girls in background along the wall-an Asian girl over her left shoulder and brunette looking away over the right. Keep your eyes on the dark haired one over Robin’s right shoulder(it is a moment or two before she shows her face) .Also she is shown again running her hand through her hair. Possible attention-getter?

Hey again everyybody. sorry for sending the same stuff here, but seriously i really get obsessed with the music played at the end of this episode(s3e17), while ted leaves the limo. plz anyone knows it or realizes that great music let us know.

  61.  Egon | May 23, 2008 @ 8:45 am

Yeah, I too would be interested to know the ending music. It resemblances a song I heard just a few years ago,…somthing with “I don’t know…somthing something”.

I know, that’s a terrible attempt to describe the song haha!
