Season 3 Episode 20: Miracles (Finale) Discussion

Do miracles exist? Us fans got a forth season and Ted and Barney both got a new lease on life so it seems like they might. Tonight saw many cliffhangers, many flashbacks, and, in my opinion, many mistakes. One thing is for sure: I’m already anticipating this fall. Season three is over, what do we think? Spoilers follow so only continue if you’ve seen the finale.

Please Read

I’m purposefully leaving out a certain moment between Robin and Barney in this recap. Here is a post a thread dedicated to said moment since it’s huge but I don’t want the discussion of the end of the season overshadowed. Do me a solid and share your thoughts on the moment there. Thanks.

What Was Good

I loved the Marshall subplot about the lice. That felt like classic HIMYM. I’m not sure why, but the pacing and the storytelling in that section felt the most like what we’re used to.

I liked seeing Ted and Barney make up. They played it for cheese, but the “you’re my brother” thing was great because we knew how much that meant to Barney. If they’d done a better job of setting up a conflict there, it would’ve been even more monumental a moment.

Cobie Smulders continues to shine with only small moments in each episode. Her fighting with Marshall, while not as good as we’ve seen it in the past, was still superb.

What Was Bad

Overall I felt the episode was really choppy. If you go back and watch The Platinum Rule or How I Met Everyone Else or one of the other episodes that involved the entire group in the main plot it’s amazing how tightly timed and paced the scenes are. Not so tonight. I felt like everything leading up to the crash was hurried. I still feel like the scenes with Sarah Chalke are awkward too, like they’re from a different series and are being spliced into the episode. Not content-wise, but in how incongruous they are with everything else.

I didn’t buy the ending either. What was supposed to be the cliffhanger for the season felt like the resolution to a forced plot. Last week Ted and Stella were great, now this week they had Ted doubt his intentions (or at least that’s what I assume since they never really said it) only to have a change of heart and propose? Where was the build up to either? I feel like we should’ve seen Ted starting to doubt his commitment, anything that would’ve lead to any of the moments we saw tonight. I find myself disliking Josh Radnor over the past few weeks and it’s not his fault, I feel like the show isn’t being true to the Ted character. We were supposed to see the end of Outlaw Ted after No Tomorrow but instead of romantic awesome Ted from seasons 1 and 2 we got weird quarter-life-crisis Ted who is all over the map.

Favorite Moments

  • There were quite a few callbacks. The scene with Ted and Stella eating breakfast took place outside the Popover Pantry (where Marshall loves eating brunch) and I loved Barney’s return to the “International Business Meeting” lie.
  • “I love Bruce Springsteen, he’s like the American Bryan Adams.” <– one of the best Canada jokes ever
  • The song that played during the car crash slow-motion sequence (which I think was Radiohead)
  • That pencil bouncing into Barney’s nose was amazing.
  • “Call the Vatican, I think most of their certified miracles involve dry humping.”
  • That was bad-ass when Stella slapped the Jello out of Ted’s hand
  • Sir Scratchwon. Did I catch that right? Was that a Canadian reference I don’t get?

Closing

I really wanted to like this episode. On paper, all the events that transpired I loved. If I hadn’t seen anything but plot bullet points I’d have thought it was legendary. It just wasn’t and I’m not sure what it why: the rushed editing, me never fully buying Stella’s character for the start, a lack of proper build up, something just didn’t win me over the way previous seasons have.

Maybe the last few episodes have been setup this way in case there wasn’t a renewal, where this could’ve served as the final episode? We’ll never know. I feel like I have a lot more to process with this episode—and this season—so for the rest of this week I’ll be posting individual discussions and polls to try and sort it out. I’ll need your help, so stay tuned.

something else that was great was The Replacements “here comes a regular” at the end — one of my fave songs ever.

I loved all of Marshall’s miracles…Esp the airport miracle with the doug benson cameo. And Marshall racing to the hospital with her guitar hero guitar still on — I like that Marshall’s job search is realistic in that he’s spending some of his time jacking around.
I agree about the pacing seeming off…
and I may be alone here but I do not want chalke to be the mother. We missed her and Teds entire courtship and I frankly feel short-changed.

the radiohead song was (Nice Dream) from their classic 1995 album The Bends (sorry, im a huge radiohead fan, and i loved hearing this song on the show)

and the dog’s name is a play on the Canadian province, Saskatchewan

overall, i aboslutely LOVED this episode and it seemed to be to be on par with the first season finale, come on.

I think this episode was in fact legendary. As someone who has been in a near death car accident, and only walking out with a scratch on my arm, I can understand the moment of thinking of everything you love. I t-boned a semi truck and lived to talk about it, which is something little if any can say.

I think the biggest problem you bring up, whether you realize it or not..is Time. There was not enough time in a 30 minute episode to convey and get across everything they wanted. Which is why I think if you look at season 1, the way they ended it, the finale was basically 2 episodes long..I wish I could remember what they were called, but they were locked in with each other.

The last episode was nothing more than a filler, and if it could have been my way they would have divided it all in to 2 episodes for better sub plots and more elaboration with Stella and Ted.

Regardless though, we’re always talking on here about how we want to have more episodes that advance the plot. This is certainly one of them, and season 4’s intro should do the same.

My biggest issue is how Stella is going to juggle Scrubs and the Mother.

And also, you said the cliffhanger..How could they do that to the fans if they didn’t get renewed? Well, my answer to that is I really do believe that they were notified by execs so they could figure out how to end the show in advance.

My question is, they shot 2 endings to the episodes. What was the alternate ending?

Here’s to a great season 4, and many great summer discussions. And here’s to me trying to find something to keep me busy while it’s not on..

I really hope that CBS would tell whether HIMYM would be renewed at the earliest possible time, so the creators could make some plot build up.

  5.  ky | May 19, 2008 @ 11:03 pm

This episode was not even almost at the level of come on…
So Sesson three is over…and much like finishing a medicore novel from a favorite author, I’m left knowing this could have been better but hesitant to voice my disapointment because it feels like blasphemy almost — but even so, I know this was not “greatness.” regardless, I know I’ll still buy the next novel because once I’ve fallen in love with a band, an author, or in this case, a tv show, it takes a lot for me to fall out…
Excuse my long winded metaphor….it made sense to me but if it was confusing, I’m basically just really excited about season four…

  6.  J | May 19, 2008 @ 11:05 pm

@ JackAtak – the last two episodes of season 1 were Milk and Come On

    overall great episode.

Believe it or not, but Ted proposing confirms for me that Stella isn’t the mother. The proposal should be such a big moment, they didnt even show Ted agonizing over and crawling into the claw machine. (Maybe im mixing up episodes) Season 1 Ted would fantasize about the story of him getting married, telling Marshall to remember the day he made his move on Robin so he could retell it at their wedding(Pilot), this Ted seems really rushed and it seems like hes leaving his friends out of a huge moment. In that sense, everything with Stella has seemed rushed and behind the scenes. Since Robin and Ted will be living together by next year (At least thats what I think), Stella’s not gonna want Ted to be living with a girl he dated for a year.

I think Stella will either say no, or theyll be engaged for a while and things will sour.

  7.  marko | May 19, 2008 @ 11:12 pm

I loved the Replacements at the end. Thats the 2nd time they’ve used one of their songs. I do agree that Ted’s whole relationship with Stella was rushed but I think that was due to scheduling conflicts and coming back from the strike. I’m confident that next season it can be dealt with better.

  8.  Eric Philbin | May 19, 2008 @ 11:25 pm

Bays & Thomas seem to have a thing for ‘colored objects’ and referring to them as such in their writing. Plot elements have been a “blue french horn,” a “purple giraffe,” now a “orange kangaroo” and of course the “yellow umbrella.” Hmmmm…..

  9.  Matt | May 19, 2008 @ 11:41 pm

I think a lot of the comments about the last part of this season are because of the rush to finish these episodes and the fact that they lost a couple episodes to the strike. Also, with Sarah filming Scrubs (supposedly Scrubs will finish this summer before HIMYM restarts for season 4), they could not use her as much as they would have if it was Alicia Silverstone.

Overall, I liked the episode and look forward to season 4 with a full slate of episodes and more time to plan the arcs that will be involved.

****Very Mild Possible Season 4 Spoiler below***
Also, the alternate endings that someone mentioned – that is actually the opening to season 4. They basically filmed multiple answers to Ted’s proposal and have not decided which one to use.

  10.  Geri | May 19, 2008 @ 11:43 pm

@JD and JackAtak: you both brought up a very good point. The time factor in dealing with everything that went on in this last episode.

While I did enjoy the episode (it was much better than last week’s in my opinion), it felt like the finale did need a 2 episode arc, or a one hour finale. I’m not disappointed with the way things ended, but I think there were a few too many things to process. I suppose we could go back to blaming the writer’s strike in that Thomas and Bays would have had more time to flesh out some of the finale’s loose end tie ups.

Ted and Stella…What can I say? I really found myself wanting Stella to be another Victoria when Ted first started dating her. It seems that because Chalke was not as available to really build that role, that they’ve just written around her and that kind of sucks. However, maybe this is the way the writers want her and my full trust remains in Bays and Thomas.

@ JackAtack and anyone else who didn’t see my post in the discussion of last week’s episode: an interview with Carter Bays has him mentioning that Scrubs films through the summer and though they haven’t officially signed Sarah Chalke, she would be available at that point to pick up filming with HIMYM since they start filming in the fall.

Although I think Chalke is adorable and I like the way she plays Stella (I agree with JD that her slapping the Jello out of Ted’s hands was bad ass!), I still would have preferred the Stella character to be a little more “real” to us at this point.

I do feel like we’re losing a little bit of the Ted we’ve come to know and love, but I suppose it’s not unlike real life, that people go through stages and I hope that the Ted from seasons 1 and 2, comes back for season 4.

Ted in the hospital bed after his accident. My first thought was “That’s so lame!” because he was ok after a horrible car accident. Not that I wanted him to be injured badly, but it just felt like a lame “out” to me. Of course I had no idea it was to allow for Barney’s huge injury, which was actually brave in my opinion. Of course since we’re dealing with a sitcom, there’s no way they could kill a main character off. Not at this stage of the game. Either way, it was a clever way to bring the gang all together and forge that forgiveness between Ted and Barney.

Barney (despite being Barney) continues to show how much heart he really has, with the way he’s relentless about things that concern his friends in need. The way he rushed to get to the hospital to see Ted reminded me a lot of the way he flew to San Francisco to urge Lily to come back to New York because Marshall was miserable. I think the hard thing going into season 4, is going to be keeping Barney “Barney” and letting that softer side show through. The writers have their work cut out for them on that one!

Yes, Sir Skratchewon was meant to be a reference to the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. I loved it. I actually thought that was one of the best Canadian jokes of the series. The music chosen for the episode, as always, is great. Marshall playing Guitar Hero in his underwear and running out of the house with his pants half on and the guitar still around his neck was classic Marshall! Of course Lily rocks, but poor Alyson looked like Little Orphan Annie in that dress.

I won’t discuss the Barney and Robin moment, but I will say that having just finished going through all of seasons 1 and 2 earlier today, I picked up a lot more between them the second time around.

Would it be silly of me to hope for a HIMYM convention at some point? I know other shows have them, though they’re usually shows that have way more seasons and fans under their belts, but I think this is the type of show who’s fans are so “into it”, that being able to have Craig Thomas and Carter Bays on a panel and allowing the fans to ask their own questions would be so legen….wait for it….nah i’m not gonna say it! :)

  11.  Geri | May 19, 2008 @ 11:47 pm

By the way, forgot to say that I don’t think Stella’s the mother. It’s too soon. They’re just getting started.

  12.  chris | May 20, 2008 @ 12:07 am

I really enjoyed this season 3 ender. From start to finish i was into it, kept me emotionally invested and laughing the whole time.

    Great episode all around.

  13.  Sean422 | May 20, 2008 @ 12:35 am

I thought the episode left me wanting more which is goal of any tv show, so they did a good job at that. The whole thing with Barney being hit with a bus seemed too cleche to me but the end result was funny. The Sir Scratchwon name was diffidently a reference to the Canadian providence Saskatchewan which I though was one of the best “under the radar” Canadian references that Robin has made. I’m glad to see Barney and Ted make up but I think this whole thing where Barney makes Ted say that he is a better frinds thn Marshal is getting old. The slow-mo scene cracked me up when they entered the hospital room and Ted was fine. That was simply great comedy without ever saying a word.
All I can say is season 4 can not come soon enough, and I am very excited to discuss the Barney Robin question.

  14.  natsirt | May 20, 2008 @ 12:36 am

Greatest Barney and Robin moment yet. Will refrain from more discussion as requested.

I agree with Geri the Sir Skratchewon bit was one of the greatest Canada jokes yet. That helped explain why Robin is so awkward sometimes.

My reaction to the proposal was one of disappointment. I want Stella to go away so season 4 can begin with the courtship of the mother for the first half, culminating in the wedding (in Central Park), then the second half being about the first few years of marriage. If Stella ends up being the mother I will not be happy for many of the reasons already listed (not enough build up, don’t know the character that well, the story doesn’t involve a yellow umbrella, etc).

But one important thing yet to be said remains: this episode didn’t have Britney. NO BRITNEY!!!!

  15.  Sean422 | May 20, 2008 @ 12:39 am

I just wanted to add one more thing… Stella can not be the mother. If this show is true to plot that they set out on the first episode we will meet the mom on the last episode people. I don’t think the show is called “How I met your Mother and then what happened after we met” it’s called “How I met your Mother”.

  16.  natsirt | May 20, 2008 @ 1:02 am

@Sean422 The show also isn’t called “All the random shit I did before I met your mother” but that is what we get, so I fail to see the problem with learning a little bit about the mother after Ted meets her. Besides it would be a bit of a letdown to have all this build up to him meeting her and not getting to know the character at all.

  17.  AF | May 20, 2008 @ 1:11 am

I enjoyed this episode but like many others, I wish there had been a little more time devoted to it. An hour finale would have rocked.

The beginning part where Marshall, Lily, and Robin got phone calls made my breath hitch. Those actors handled the emotion so well. And I loved how that emotion was yanked away with Ted being perfectly fine.

I loved the moment between Barney and Robin but as requested, I will hold off on my discussion of that.

And I loved Marshall and Robin’s banter. And Sir Scratchewan.

  18.  Sleepy | May 20, 2008 @ 1:22 am

In the pilot, Older Ted tells the kids that there are two big questions in every guy’s life, one you worry over for weeks beforehand and the other you blurt out at a bar (paraphrasing)…no way he marries Stella…

If you think about it, the Season 2 finale really was presented over the course of THREE episodes.

Don’t forget that Ted & Robin broke up during Showdown (when they came in with the Spaghetti sauce all over them- and the blue horn was missing from the wall, or was that already something Borrowed?). They just didn’t tell anyone till the last moments of the season. But the episodes definitely took the big moment of the finale into account.

In addition, I think Marshall running out of the apartment with his pants down is one of the greatest moments of emotional manipulation I’ve seen on a TV show. I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or to cry, and I was doing both at the same time!

  22.  Viridis | May 20, 2008 @ 5:18 am

I’m going to have to agree with JD. Bullet-point wise, between certain jokes and certain plot points, this was a great episode. But it felt way too rushed, too much stuff compacted into the episode.

Stella better refuse and Ted better go back to romantic Ted in his attempts to woo her back.

  23.  john d'arc | May 20, 2008 @ 5:33 am

pssh, either she is the mother or she isn’t. if she isn’t, I can see people wanting Ted to drop her like a bad habit.

Then again, if she says no, how is he going to segue into dating other chicks. Unless she isn’t “effable” or “the one”

  24.  John | May 20, 2008 @ 5:38 am

@ john d’arc: wow. you are so observant. i bet it’s a sign.

I agree that a 1 hour finale would have been much more appropriate. There were some huge storylines there that I think should have been more drawn out. I would have preferred getting rid of last week’s ep (leaving it for next season?) and having a 2-part finale.
I think this episode really summed up this whole season – some parts were great, others were rather hit-and-miss. I can’t picture Stella as the mother. Well I guess we now have 6 months to discuss and theorise!

  25.  Ike | May 20, 2008 @ 7:39 am

What we have is a convergance of uncontrollable events making this episode lack in what is usually HIMYM”s strong suit (interweaving plots and managing time). The strike cut them down to dealing with everything they had planned for 6 episodes in 4. Past few episodes have been subpar, and rushed. And that is clearly seen hear. Like JD says the bullets are legendary, but they needed an hour. The other 2 seasons had basically 2 episodes that were intertwined for the final. Imagine if they had tried doing Something Borrowed and Something Blue in 30 minutes. That’s what happened here. Also not knowing if they were getting renewed they had to spend some time planning for the worst. which took away time from these last few episodes being done great. But I am looking forward to season 4 and now everyone has the summer to return everything to normal.

  26.  eduardo | May 20, 2008 @ 8:14 am

It was a really nice episode, I loved it.
Perhaps with a few more episodes it would have been better, but I’m ok with it the way it was.

    p.s.: robin was amazing

  27.  Jez | May 20, 2008 @ 8:38 am

one of the better episodes of the season….

very hard to NOT talk about BRO….but i will control myself…

i dont believe stella is the mother….remember he tells his kids..”remember the thing with the umbrella”….that to me suggests an across the room, love at first sight type meeting .,a’la robin.

that scene with ted and barney was awesome….

  28.  AF | May 20, 2008 @ 8:40 am

I would like to add a side note.

I’m so thrilled that the writers of HIMYM were given the chance to finish off the third season by the end of May and they got their renewal for next year.

There were several shows that I loved pre-strike season that I won’t get to see again till fall because those shows didn’t have the funds or the backing to return until later (ex. Private Practice, Heroes, Chuck, Pushing Daisies).

I truly feel that with more time to plan and organize, Season 4 will be legendary. Wait for it. Dary.

  29.  macdawson | May 20, 2008 @ 9:36 am

while i liked the episode, like many have said, it felt rushed.
The fact that this season is 2 episodes shorter than the others left little time to resolve the season. The entire situation between Ted and Stella deserved a full episode, like the whole pre-accident part of this episode being expanded to a full episode, with Ted going nuts about Stella’s invitation and discussing about it with the gang, eventually “breaking up” with her and the episode ending with Ted’s cab being hit…(fade to black), and then this episode but… better paced.
Barney was just legen…WFI…dary. And when he’s hit, i hate admiting it but i laughed so hard i think a little pee came out (gross).
And that he got the hospital staff to set his cast so he could Hi-five… LOL.
What came after we’ll leave for the discussion topic you will start this afternoon. Looking forward to it.

  30.  NV | May 20, 2008 @ 9:58 am

Didn’t read the other comments yet. Wanted to write mine first.

Personally, I really liked this episode. Why? Simply because it made the best of a finale to a season who’s plot was stagnating for quite awhile.

Barney running to Ted was actually very sweet and very believable. If there was a way for them to make up, I can think of few more worthy than that.

The Stella/Ted angle, too, worked for me. Ted wanted to be Outlaw Ted, but a leopard doesn’t change it’s own spots. This was classic Ted, jumping the gun in romantic relationships. Meet a girl the first time, tell her he loves her. Realises he doesn’t want to break up with a girl, he proposes. This is so within character, I actually think I suspected he was going to propose the moment he said fake diamond ring (I always believe that when you can predict a character’s actions before he makes them, the story is either extremely cliched or very well-written. This is not the former in my opinion).

Good episode, good finale. Seasons one and two had far better finales, but they also had better plots throughout the season.

Immediate prediction. While my heart tells me Stella will refuse the proposal immediately, my head tells me she’ll accept and alot of next season will about the engagement.

  31.  Liz | May 20, 2008 @ 10:46 am

If Stella has any sense, she will refuse Ted’s proposal and he will have to work to get her back. The proposal seemed like a random side effect of Ted’s car crash induced personal crisis.

There was lots of good Marshall stuff in the finale. I loved the throwback to him playing video games in his underwear. He really got lucky with the whole head lice situation; Marshall’s not cut out for corporate America. However, he’s going to have to get a well paying job if Lily is going to remain addicted to shopping. The dress she was wearing looked kind of ridiculous on her.

The Barney-Ted reunion was sappy, but necessary. I totally thought that the cliffhanger would be about them, not Ted proposing to Stella.

    Best line

    Lilly: Something about boiling detergent

@Eric Philbin.. Yes colors have meaning watch what they are wearing and associate it with mood.

    I will do those:

    Yellow = cheerful
    Orange = hurried
    Blue = loving

Purple Giraffe notice a claw machine is involved around marriage again ;) Look at what happened last time!!!

  33.  Nick | May 20, 2008 @ 11:20 am

Did anyone notice that when Bareny arrives at the hospital and looks over the street the guy getting out of the cab is the same that stole Bareny’s cab after he left his office? Check it out! Barney’s really fast…but then again, he can run a marathon without any preparation

  34.  Be Awesome Instead | May 20, 2008 @ 11:26 am

Overall all great episode. I think most would agree that Stella is not the mother, and she will either stay no or they will be engaged for a bit and then call it off. I stand by the reasons I listed on my site… Stella just doesn’t meet enough of the criteria for what we already know about the mother.

on the BRO issue…nothing in depth(as requested), just I knew it.

I thought it was Awesome they used Radiohead’s “Nice Dream” for the dramatic moment at the beginning. I wish more people would use Radiohead for show music.

  35.  Dustin | May 20, 2008 @ 2:09 pm

I kind of feel like the proposal was a “if we don’t get renewed then this will be our out” plot. I’m kind of hoping that Stella will think things have progressed too fast and decline. She seemed pretty upset about the breakup, and I kinda expected a bit more drama/hysterics/tension leading up to Ted’s “true” proposal. Would romantic Ted really propse in an arcade? I doubt it.

I think the girl Ted bumps into at the St. Paddy’s day party will turn out to be the mom, and she’ll be completely effably awesome. Series will end with them meeting, shaking hands, staring into each others eyes, Ted with a huge stupid smile on his face and everyone will just ‘know’.

  36.  JD | May 20, 2008 @ 2:32 pm

Hey everyone. Go here to share your feelings on Barney’s long, lingering glare.

  37.  Geri | May 20, 2008 @ 3:40 pm

More came to me last night when I was trying to get to bed (damn it sleep – why won’t you come?) It was an interweaving of Ted/Stella/Robin moving into the apartment with Ted thought process so bare with me.

Suppose Stella says yes to Ted’s proposal. That could possibly give Ted a reason to eventually move in with Stella, which would leave LAME needing a room mate until DOWISTREPLA is ready (why haven’t those damn floors been fixed yet?). Cue Robin moving in to Ted’s old room.

Eventually the floors are ready and LAME move out, around the same time that Ted and Stella call off their engagement. Cue Ted needing a place to live and moving back into his old apartment, with Robin.

The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why Robin would give up her beautiful apartment unless forced to. Maybe a fire? Maybe she loses her job? Who knows?

Maybe I think too much? ha ha ha!

Maybe this point is better left discussed in a possible future discussion of the episodes? (JD?)

  38.  ESG | May 20, 2008 @ 4:41 pm

To sum it up with Marshall’s wise words… “What the hell?!?!”

sorry guys, but I felt this episode was forced and rushed with to many things crammed into 20 something minutes… while I didn’t hate it, it make me sad that the previous episode (“Everything Must Go”) instead of useless plot could have been used to make this “Miracles” episode a one-two punch combination a season ending episode that MUCH better. Guess I miss season’s 1 and 2 pace and storytelling…

The only miracle was that a fourth season was picked up, hopefully things will get on track.

  39.  Rosie | May 20, 2008 @ 9:07 pm

I loved this episode. I thought it more than made up for the sub-par episode last week.

The first time I watched the make-up scene, I thought it was way cheesy. (Although Ted choking up on, “You could have died,” really tugged at more than a few of my heartstrings.) I liked it, but I sort of shrugged it off since the Barney-Ted Bro-ke-up didn’t hold a lot of weight.

The second time, I was practically sobbing.

I don’t know. It was such a well executed scene. There are all these little nuances to Josh Radnor’s and NPH’s performances. Especially NPH. Oh my God, the little child-like tone he takes when he asks if they can be friends again had my heart in pieces. Give that man an emmy. Please.

Looking back on the past few episodes, I think this make up makes sense. Barney was obviously hurting at the end of The Goat, and even at the end of Rebound Bro. They both shoved their feelings in the corner and tried to move on, and couldn’t. The macho-breakdown only adds to the whole, “We are men and we move on and we have no emotion so bye friendship,” thing they were trying (and failing) to pull off.

that fake diamond ring bit was frickin TELEGRAPHED. was the proposal supposed to be a surprise?

Did anyone notice at the beginning when Marshall was reading the paper it said “naked cabbie vows to kill again” Surely that was a hint as to what could have happen if ted got into one of those other cabs (probably the spray painted one)!

Solid episode overall, my only suggestion would have been to shorten “Everything Must Go” and add the 5 minutes of break-up to that episode somehow, then in the post-final-commercial bit, showed Ted about to get in the accident as a 1-week cliff hanger. That would have allowed them an extra 7 or 8 minutes to spread out and pace the finale.

Also, I noticed a time discrepancy. Ted comes back to the apartment for a beer at 10am. Why is Lily, a kindergarten teacher, at home at 10am? Marshall unemployed I get; Robin does the evening news; and Ted is the boss at the sex architect firm so he could probably get away with it. But Lily gets the phone call (wearing the same ridiculous dress) at school. What gives? Only explanation is if she became a daycare after school teacher, but not likely.

…Am I the only person that thought Lily’s dress was cute? Seriously? Seriously?!

@natsirt from what I understand when Old Ted is narrating that is what he is actually telling his children. All of that “random shit” you were talking about isn’t always being narrated. There are specific times when Old Ted is narrating and says “Stella and I were doing great” and not saying “Your Mom and I were doing great”. So I just don’t think Stella will be the Mom.

  45.  natsirt | May 21, 2008 @ 10:03 am

@Sean422 No I mean there are entire episodes that have almost nothing to do with meeting the mother and are just stories about random shit Ted did before meeting their mother. I realize that everything is supposed to be part of the path that led him to the mother, but did “Columns” or “Dowisetrepla” really add anything?

The only example of Ted not telling the kids what he was actually doing that I know of is when Victoria left for Germany and they had a bunch of sex, but he told them they went to the zoo, etc. Other than that I’m not sure we have a lot of evidence that it happens much.

I rewatched the episode last night and I’m pretty sure the really crappy spraypainted taxi was in a couple of the pictures from the Garbage Bag website.

Didn’t Marshall say that the lice miracle happened in April? Why were all the kids making thanksgiving decorations?

I love the fact that they didn’t have Stella reply the Ted’s proposal this season because that means that she will be back next year and mother or not I think Sarah Chalke has been amazing on this show just as she is on Scrubs. I think that what’ll happen with Ted and Stella is that they will get engaged and be together for part of season 4, it’ll be like when Ted was dating Robin during season 2, but then a complication will arise much like when Lily left Marshall, except that Stella won’t be back. Also, I’m kinda curious as to who the guy who knocked up Stella is.

I really liked all of the flashbacks that Marshall told to try and get Robin to believe in miracles, I thought that Barney getting the pencil up his nose was one of the funniest moments in the episode.

Overall I think that season 4 is shaping up to be very, very good.

You’re right, Matt, if you look closely at the driver, he seems to be naked. GOOD CATCH!!!

looking really close at him (the naked cabbie) he looks like sketch in the paper. He´s bald and seems to have something around his head, like the band from what seems to be an eye-patch. LOL. Attention to detail is everything in this series, hope the next season keeps up.

    Is Stella the mother?

Wasn’t she too busy with her practice and the kid? Wasn’t the mother at St. Patrick’s Day party where Ted was?
Now she doesnt have time to date …how is she out on St. Patrick’s Day.
Interesting to see how the writers link up Robin staying a year later and other threads altogether if Stella is indeed the mother.

Loved Marshall fumbling with the guitar at the hospital entrance..Barney is Legen..dary…..

Regardless even if he “saw” his moments with Robin flashing through.

When I was watching this episode, at the end, after Ted had proposed, Stella didn’t have a very happy face, like a confused one. Maybe thats a hint?!

  51.  Jin | May 25, 2008 @ 2:47 am

hahha it’s “sir Scrathy-one” i.e. he likes to be scratched?

loved the episode thought the crash scene was a bit forced.

and don’t forget the goat day episode, in a year robin will be living with ted’s place!! another hint of stella/ted fiasco. don’t get me wrong i love sara chalke, great actor…plus she really hot. and not like in a slutty way, like cute/hot way.

    lol over nude cabbie

I live in Saskatchewan! That joke made my day.

I think Stella will say no. Which likely means she isn’t the mother (though not necessarily).
