Season 4, Episode 4 “Intervention” Discussion
By JD
So tonight we saw the first mildly mediocre episode this season. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t as good as the first ones we’ve seen. Change is hard, and for awhile it seemed like the gang might not go forward with all the changes we’ve seen building up this season. Then we ended with a twist worthy of The Goat last year.
What was Good
Barney in an old man suit is legendary. Say what you will about his lothario ways but the Barnicle puts a lot of effort into scoring with bar skanks. He’s a master of his craft.
Nerdy, pretentious Ted is my favorite. Encyclopædia, the flail, it’s all money.
Robin drinking twelve Molsons and getting “super Canadian” is so genius I don’t know why we haven’t seen it before. Top it off with a girl fight with Lily and that’s a party I want to go to.
Lily’s cockney accent was awesome. I’d love to see her around her ghetto friend in that time frame. While on the Interventions, it had seemed like Barney had cut down on the magic tricks.
When Marshall read the reason why Ted shouldn’t marry Stella a lesser sitcom would’ve had Ted storm out. Instead, Ted handled it maturely since he couldn’t argue that Marshall had a point.
I liked the notion of them all fearing change. All the characters struggle with growing up and being mature, it makes sense they wouldn’t want to leave the apartment where so many memories were born. It was a little surprising to see Robin fear change and wish she was a little more nostalgic too. Under her tough veneer she too has romantic tendencies. Did you notice that the flash-forward to a year from now Robin was the one asking Wendy to take a picture?
What was Bad
Some of the flashbacks felt forced. The episode just didn’t feel as solid in the pacing somehow. I can’t point out a specific moment, just a general feeling that this wasn’t the best the show’s been.
The intervention thing was funny, but I didn’t love it. Marshall’s hat bit felt forced, the rest were pretty good though. Also, Claudia doesn’t work as a brunette. Good to see her and Stuart again though, even if they’ve fallen on hard times.
I was glad to see everyone finally address disapproval with Ted and Stella’s relationship. Marshall did have a point and it was good that Ted saw it. I felt like Lily and Robin kind of chickened out however.
The ads for Season 3 on DVD. Still with the Britney Spears? Really? I thought we were done with that.
Favorite Moments
- “You’re nuttier than a Tim Horton’s maple log.”
“I’ll give you summerteeth. Some are here, some are there.” - Barney busting in after skimming the e-vite was a lovely awkward moment. Plus, Tanqueray Ten is awesome gin.
- Even though I didn’t love Marshall’s hat intervention, I liked Robin’s Dr. Seuss intervention script.
- “Who’s the narcissist with severe attachment disorder now Dr. Grosbard?”
- R2-sweet tooth? Best cookie jar ever.
- I liked Ted kicking those people out of their booth. I always wondered how they got the same seat every time.
- “She’s French. That’s like playing tennis with the net down.”
- Call me crazy, but I always get excited to see Wendy the Waitress.
Closing
I still liked this episode, and still found it funny. I just feel like the first three were really great and this one was stretched pretty thin plot-wise. Maybe it’s just because I don’t think Stella will be around forever and every episode Ted doesn’t break it off with her just seems like delaying the inevitable.
Now we know that a year from now at least someone will still be living up in the apartment. Who? Is it still Ted, Marshall, and Lily? This is the kind of cliffhanger the show loves to drop on us in the last minute and I’m not complaining. What does it mean?
UPDATE: A word on the flash forward. Many readers noticed that Ted didn’t have a ring on his finger. That must mean he doesn’t go through with marrying Stella. Also note that Lily didn’t really drink the scotch she was poured but sandbagged when everyone else took a sip. Could she be pregnant? If so, it is probably a secret since they wouldn’t have poured her any if everyone knew.

There is no mention of Stella or of Ted being married at all in the flash-forward. That’s the main thing I noticed. RoBarn get cuddly in the picture-taking but that doesn’t necessarily have to mean anything. Lily isn’t pregnant, which means LAME are probably still childless (if they pull the “they can’t have kids” thing to delay it I will kill somebody).
Courtney | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:10 pm GMT -4
I have to disagree.. this episode was hands down better than the last two. This was a classic HIMYM episode. The other two felt force and really was not that funny.
Kyle | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:15 pm GMT -4
I agree with the above poster. This one felt much more natural, and nowhere near as sitcom-y as the last two. As for Andy’s comment, I have a feeling that Ted and Robin are living in the apartment, per Future Ted’s comments at the end of “The Goat”.
john darc | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:31 pm GMT -4
I actually dug it more than last week’s.
Talk about ballsy, flash forwarding to a year later. It’s what I love about the show.
Sure, some of the jokes felt a bit hamfisted. But I still liked it.
john darc | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:34 pm GMT -4
also, the hat bit was done on *shudder* Family Guy.
HIMYM stealing a FG joke? What is this world coming to?
Matt | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:36 pm GMT -4
I agree with most of what you said. Overall the episode just seemed a little off. But I felt that all the funny little jokes: Drunk-Canadian Robin, Robin’s poem, R2SweetTooth, Barney skimming the e-vite; all made this a pretty good episode. Definitely better than World’s Best Burger, which I felt was one of the more forced episodes in this show’s 3 season run.
The Modern Gal | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:47 pm GMT -4
Yeah, I thought it was better than last week’s but not as good as the burger episode.
Besides being a brunette, was that even the same actress portraying Claudia?
john darc | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:53 pm GMT -4
@The Modern Gal:
I think so. But she lost weight, too. Sorta jarring for those not in the know.
Maybe he started drinking because of her?
Ben | Monday, October 13th, 2008 10:54 pm GMT -4
Anyone else notice they were trying real hard to hide Ted’s left hand behind the menu in the flash-forward? Also did anyone else notice that ted did not have a ring on his left hand when he picked up the drinks when they were about to leave?
This reminds me a lot of the episode where they were flash-forwarding to LAME’s wedding and trying not to make it look like Robin and Ted were broken up.
Tim | Monday, October 13th, 2008 11:11 pm GMT -4
“So tonight we saw the first mildly mediocre episode this season. ”
Whaaaat???
This was by far my favorite episode of this season so far. The first ten minutes had me crying from laughter. And we got serious, heartfelt stuff. And then we get a flash forward that leaves us all wondering!
Great episode.
cb | Monday, October 13th, 2008 11:11 pm GMT -4
I’m getting tired of Ted’s “I think one way, then out of nowhere think another” actions. ie in this episode, Ted deciding not to move out, then the first second they are at the bar, he states “I’m moving to NJ.” Same issue last episode when he spoke all brazenly about not wanting to move to NJ, then bam! he hugs Stella and says “I’m moving to NJ.”
Ted is becoming a tiresome character to me.
P.S. I dug Robin’s “plus I’m hotter than she is” quote.
Miranda | Monday, October 13th, 2008 11:25 pm GMT -4
I agree that this was an awesome episode but I do have one question…are they pulling a desperate housewife thing and really fast forwarding a year? Or is it like in previous eposides where they do a flash-forward but then go back to real time? The end had me on the edge of my seat though…I can’t help but feeling like I really know the characters…if only Robin and Lilly were my friends in real life…gosh that’d be great!
J | Monday, October 13th, 2008 11:30 pm GMT -4
the episode was awesome. PREDICTION TIME.
Barney is going to rent the apartment out for women, a la Moving Day. And when Ted and Stella finally split with her leaving him practically at the alter, Ted will move back and live with his bro.
jackatak08 | Monday, October 13th, 2008 11:57 pm GMT -4
Poster above me, 13 J, is entirely correct. That’s my prediction as well.
I don’t know what to think about it all.
The fireball thing was hilarious. Reminded me of DBZ/Mortal Kombat
Ian | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:02 am GMT -4
Robin lives at the apartment… we know this from “The Goat”… the only question is who is her roommate(s)?
…and for Miranda… do not refer to it as a DH thing… the initiator of the perma-flash forward was LOST… and its not happening with HIMYM
Ian | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:02 am GMT -4
Oh, and whoever writes this… c’mon… easily the best episode of the season.. this and the burger episode, hands down awesome!
Wii60 | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:08 am GMT -4
Did anyone else notice that Lily didn’t drink the scotch? I think this means she’s pregnant.
Geri | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:11 am GMT -4
The episode was good. Not as funny as last weeks, in my opinion. Of course I’m very happy because I finally got my Robin action. I’m glad she had more participation this episode, even if a lot of it was in flash backs/forwards. I have a feeling it is her that will be living in the apartment in 2009. Isn’t that what the Goat predicted? I forgot if they specified a time-line for that, or if they just said Ted’s 31st birthday and I’m too lazy to go look for it now.
- Loved the look on Robin’s face when she slapped Ted in the bar. She gave that happy little smirk after she realized what she just did.
- Of course the hockey references were hilarious to me (so happy that it’s hockey season again!) and the line “You’re nuttier than a Tim Horton’s Maple Log” had me rolling on the floor. You know how some of you were craving a burger after the burger episode? That’s what the mention of Tim Horton’s does to us Canadians. We will take ANY excuse to go get some Timmy’s!
- Robin’s Dr. Seuss poem was priceless and so was Ted’s pronunciation of Encyclopaedia.
- ANY reason for Marshal to imitate a robot is fine by me! I love the fact they named the cookie jar R2 Sweet-tooth!
- I was actually waiting all episode for Barney to mention 83 and of course he did – “arthritis five!”
-Ted yelling at those people to get out of their booth was hilarious
-Did anyone else notice that Lily didn’t take a sip of the Scotch? I could have missed it, but I swear she didn’t. If I’m right, then we have our clue as to Lily being pregnant in 2009 and starting a family with LAME.
Katie | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:21 am GMT -4
so i personally love this episode.
i also loved how close barney and robin got
when they were taking the picture at the end.
all together i thought that i was amazing.
Kevin | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:39 am GMT -4
I was hoping to get on here and comment that on my second watch through I noticed that Ted did not have a wedding ring on his finger, but I guess I’m way too late for that. Nice catch Ben.
For a “mildly mediocre” episode this sure has stirred up a lot of conversation. Perhaps that is what this episode was meant to do. It will certainly not be remembered as one of the greats, but it sure has gotten us all talking.
AF | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:00 am GMT -4
I enjoyed this show
’cause even old Barney still bags ho’s
It’s was classy and unique
And I can’t wait for next week!
I can’t believe that woman fell for Barney’s stint. But hey, they could borrow from Heroes and it could be “Sleep with Barney, Save the World”
Courtney | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:15 am GMT -4
That was different actress playing Claudia
Season 1 : Virginia Williams
Season 4 : Michelle Gunn
Taryn | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:29 am GMT -4
i really liked this episode. i think it might have been my favorite so far. but i agree that it’s pretty obvious that stella is not the mother, so every episode that they’re still together feels like wasted time.
Did anyone notice the flub? the girl took her cell phone and it wasn’t on the table, then it was. first mistake i’ve ever noticed… i’m proud of myself. :p
and i did notice that ted didn’t have a ring, and that lilly didn’t take a drink. but she still could have sipped it when the camera wasn’t on her…
P | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:49 am GMT -4
I definitely agree with most posters saying that this was a more natural episode similar to the previous seasons.
At the end of The Goat, he said that Robin was living at the apartment and not living “with me” at the apartment. It could simply mean that Robin’s Japan trip was actually only a few months and she needed a place to stay afterwards. I highly doubt they can put a logical spin on Barney ditching his $$$-pad. I’m going to assume that Stella is not the mom simply because there was no mention of there being an older, blonde sister for the kids on the couch.
I did notice that Robin and Barney’s stare at each other prior to the photo gives a little hint at a possible relationship during that year as she got rather close with him and he with her as Ted was left in the middle.
However, it wouldn’t make sense if Barney was dating Robin that they’d move into the apartment as opposed to Robin moving into Barney’s $$$-pad.
J | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:49 am GMT -4
I was paying way too much attention to BRo at the end to notice Ted’s finger and Lily’s no drink, although if she had a glass at all would imply that she would drink from it and hence not be pregnant.
Robin can still be living in the apartment if Barney rents it… wink wink,
J | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:52 am GMT -4
ps. oh wait, i just re-watched the seen and Lily deliberately smelled the scotch but didnt drink it, and was wearing a very loose blouse, so yea she’s knocked up.
john darc | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:12 am GMT -4
I wonder if anyone else caught the irony that they celebrate Stuart’s intervention by….drinking. Some might say our gang is also mildly alcoholic.
john darc | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:13 am GMT -4
I know it says it’s a different actress playing Claudia, but this show doesn’t do that, and I just rewatched. It’s the same actress, just brunette and seemingly thinner.
Rachael | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:16 am GMT -4
Although Lily didn’t drink the scotch, doesn’t she chime in about it tasting the same as regular scotch?
john darc | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:17 am GMT -4
hmm, I just realized, the flashbacks are so involved, I no longer can tell when they take place. Lily’s hair is different, they even changed the photo of Marshall and Lily on the book case.
Payel | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:49 am GMT -4
I don’t know why JD and some other people think in that way, but i personally loved this episode. After 2 ok episodes (402 & 403) we again get to see one awesome one.
It was funny, emotional, touchy…………in one word, just like HIMYM. The idea of intervention on stupid ting was hilarious. I will agree with JD, some flashback seemed kinda forced. But that didn’t matter at all since the rest of the episode was superb. My most favourite moment is the flash-forward-the fact that ‘somethings stayed the same’.
Jennie | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 05:49 am GMT -4
You’re so wrong about this episode being mediocre. It was by far the best episode of the season. Classic HIMYM episode with all of the fantastic flashbacks and Barney antics. And I thought the opening of the episode was one of the most legendary ever. I read an interview w/ Cobie where she said she thinks Robin will move into the apartment after her shortlived Japan job. She will have nowhere to live when she comes back. I loved all of the interventions; They made me want to hold some w/ my own friends. Hahaha!
George | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 06:35 am GMT -4
Classic HIMYM episode.
Loved the story line.
I have a feeling robin and possibly ted are living upstairs in the apartment.
I loved the “Old man” pick up “scene” at the beginning that made me LOL.
Loving HIMYM even if i do have to watch it a day late!! I try and stay as up to date with the states as possible
Chrissy | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 07:06 am GMT -4
I didn’t read all the comments but I agree with Courtney and Kyle. This episode was way better than the two epis before. Old Barney was hilarious! Some story continuance again. The magic tricks were back and Barney’s magical number 83. That’s the Barney I like to see! …and he sees a shrink, very interesting… but not really surprising, is it =D ? I loved Lily’s accent and Robin being super Canadian. The greatest thing of all was the gang preventing Ted from getting married. I’m not fond of him and Stella so it was nice to see I’m not the only one ;D I also think Stella and Ted break up eventually since she wasn’t with the gang in 2009.
I hope the show finally got its old strength back and this time I’m really looking forward to next week.
the dude | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 07:20 am GMT -4
This was one of the best episodes in all of HIMYM, imo.
Everything just clicked.
Ike | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 07:38 am GMT -4
I also disagree, this was a great episode. Maybe the best of the season. The flow felt perfectly fine with me, and even though Marshall’s hat seemed out there I could believe it and Robin’s Dr. Seuss had me laughing so hard it hurt. During flashbacks it was hard to nail down a specific time, but most seemed to be in the season 3 arc maybe late season 2. I loved the irony of them drinking right after Stuart’s intervention. And the first intervention with Barney has been brought up in previous episodes, where Lily sends Barney to time out for using fire at the bar. Lily with a cockney accent made her 10 times hotter. Super Canadian Robin is great.
Whoever said they didn’t like ted instantly changing his mind, I just want to point out that both episodes he had very valid reasons, and instead of making decisions out of fear (staying in NY) he’s doing the brave, valiant thing and moving to NJ.
One last note: The thing that makes this series great is it’s diversity and something for everyone. 4 episodes and most can agree they’re all average (For HIMYM which is still awesome) or above (which is great compared to other series and seasons). And we all have loved at least one or two. (My ranking: Intervention, Do I know You?, World’s Best Burger, I Heart NJ)
Hee | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 07:39 am GMT -4
I agree with JD’s review. Although I laughed and had fun, I feel like I’m still waiting for the episode to start. (However, as average as this episode was, I just think of the awfulness that was World’s Best Burger and suddenly all my complaints disappear).
Ok, so now we finally got an episode centred around the apartment and the bar and it felt like home to some people. I just don’t enjoy the “yeah we’re moving” (which didn’t feel believable) and then “We’re not moving” (which felt immature and also unbelievable) and then “Let’s move” which again felt
unbelievable. Why didn’t any of it feel believable? Because we aren’t getting to see any convincing catalyst for these decisions (as with Ted giving into NJ after a 5 second lame montage from last week’s episode). HIMYM is really struggling to make me believe these days.
I like to think of myself as a moderate fan who accepts the writers decisions, whether I like them or not, but I want her GONE!
By the way, I’m fairly certain Ted breaking up a girl fight is getting pretty close to breaking the bro code.
Sarah | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 07:53 am GMT -4
Surely though, if BRo were to happen, then Robin wouldn’t want to move into Barney’s flat.
It would lead to a very HIMYM like episode of Barney having to clear out his stuff, flashbacks of memories of hooking up with people in his digs etc.
neeraj | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 09:16 am GMT -4
thank god himym is back with something sensible
better episode then the previous two
did you ppl notice that women at the end actually picked up the phone and left and ted didn’t have a phone in his hand, but in the next scene there was a cell phone…..
Humberto | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 10:58 am GMT -4
Good episode. As good as other S4 eps and helluva lot better than the burger one. BTW has the apt damage pointed out always been there in previous eps? Is this the first time Barney admitted that he sees a psychiatrist? Although Barney having mental problems shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
Ae | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 11:04 am GMT -4
I thought it was the best episode this season. Good catch on the ring and Lily not drinking. Anyone else notice that Lucy lost a year in her age? She was 8 and in 3rd grade but now she is 7 in this episode. I don’t know if it’s important if Stella is not the mother.
JRF | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 11:30 am GMT -4
I just watched Season 3 commentary and they were discussing Lily and/or Robin cutting her hair this season. That’s what I ended up looking for in the flash forward, and they did both put their hair up in case that’s what they end up doing sometime this year.
Cyrus | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 11:49 am GMT -4
Ok. Someone please explain about Barney renting his place out. or whateva. what episode was this?
Blake | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 11:57 am GMT -4
Alright its probably just me but I couldn’t help but notice the whole cell phone thing seemed unimportant unless they are going to do something with that in the future. I’m not saying the girl who left the cell phone is the Mother, but I was just thinking that the cell phone could turn Ted back into the guy we saw when he met Victoria and even when he was trying to find the girl from the online dating site. To me, it was almost like they just threw that in there to possibly use it in upcoming episodes, or even next season.
Courtney | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:12 pm GMT -4
There’s like two other Courtneys around here so I had to make sure I commented too. Can’t be left out of the Courtney party.
JD, I respectfully disagree with you here. This was probably my favorite one thus far. And like J, I too was too busy watching BRo/Robarn/Mr. And Mrs. Awesome for clues to notice Lily not drinking. If she’s pregnant in a year and not showing yet, that will actually surprise me, as I figured it would happen sooner.
Again, I loved this one. Super Canadian Robin, Cockney Lily (“cor blimey”), Ted with his flail, all of it. It felt a little broad at times, but this is the only show that really pulls that off and still makes it seem real.
neeraj | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:16 pm GMT -4
Blake
see it again the girl picks up the phone and leaves
there is no phn on the desk, but when she comes there is a phone
J | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 12:50 pm GMT -4
CYRUS, the episode about Barney renting is Moving Day (Season 2) where Ted is going to move in with Robin and Barney wants to rent Ted room for his hookups so he doesnt have to drag them across town to his place.
Runa | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:30 pm GMT -4
Mediocre? You’re kidding me! This is probably my favorite episode of the entire series so far
Tara | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 01:37 pm GMT -4
I spotted the phone thing too. It’s the most obvious continuity cock-up since the hot tub one, where the top is suddenly on the bottle AFTER Barney takes a swig (watch it and weep!).
Personally I loved this episode though because it was a properly ensemble episode with all the characters having funny lines and great stories. It’s so painful having to wait a whole week to see the next one!
JD | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 02:52 pm GMT -4
I concede! I’m shocked by everyone’s reactions to my displeasure for this week’s episode. I’ll go back and re-watch it to see if I enjoy it more with a second go around.
It’s great to see so many people enjoying the show however. Although I didn’t realize the burger episode was so disliked.
RiC_aRd0_ | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 04:04 pm GMT -4
I loved the episode but I noticed that some things “failed”. For instance, when the blonde girl says she thinks she’s left her cell on the table, there wasn’t any cellphone there because she took it! But then it magically appears between Ted’s hand and the ashtray…
I might be wrong about this but is it just me or that “hole” in the ceiling just appeared now?
Gravity | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 05:05 pm GMT -4
“It’s the most obvious continuity cock-up since the hot tub one, where the top is suddenly on the bottle AFTER Barney takes a swig (watch it and weep!).”
So he put on the lid back on. Big deal.
daserca | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 05:14 pm GMT -4
I totally disagree with the owner of this blog. This episode was one of the best episodes I’ve ever seen. Reminds me that old HIMYM episodes of season I and II, laughing from beginning ’til end. The only I can say it was awkward was the new Claudia. Barny’s old character was a sort of metaphor for the end of the episode. Some how we are always afraid of the change. This episode was not mediocre at all, it hidden the message the whole episode and showed it at the end, where it really makes sense, and just say “aaahh!!”
Amazing to have the scent of HIMYM back again.
I just loved it!!!!
john darc | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 05:32 pm GMT -4
since when has Ted not been this way, in that he’ll go one way, then another very quickly? He has done it plenty of times.
“We’re going to Argentina”
“We’re not going to Argentina”
“WE’re getting married”
“Not getting married”
OpenCasketForTheLadies | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 06:08 pm GMT -4
I have to agree with the majority here. I liked this episode, however if wasn’t the best episode this season. There was a lot of humor, and being Canadian, I though the Robin bit was hilarious after she pounded the Molson.
There is lots to look forward to after an episode like this one, or the goat, which is why this show is so great. The Arthritis 5 was priceless, and I did notice that Lily didn’t drink the scotch, and just smelt it.
P.S. I went to THREE stores today to buy the Bro Code and none of them had it. These are the kinds of stunts that prove HIMYM doesn’t get the respect it deserves, which in turn infuriates me!!!
Dave | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 06:09 pm GMT -4
Does anyone know why Marshall was wearing a PITT tshirt? As an alum, this caught my eye and made me love this show even more. Thought it was a solid episode and the ending again leaves room for anything to happen.
Wingman | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 06:23 pm GMT -4
Ted’s mind-changing is definitely a signature Ted trait, but i do agree that its getting old. Especially using the same one in back-to-back episodes (NY vs NJ). I’m curious to see next week, and where that one will take place if they’ve all moved out.
I’m sensing for a while at least, there will be very fragmented episodes, jumping from character to character in different locations, and less interaction between them.
I guess we’ll wait and see!
MH | Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 08:01 pm GMT -4
Yeah, one of the best in a long time! There was obviously a lot of work put into it. It is hard to connect things that well.
It did remind me of HIMYM at its very best. Keep it coming!
Ian | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 12:19 am GMT -4
JD
I loved the burger episode… so far the non-Stella episodes have been ace, and the Stella episodes have plodded along rather tediously (by traditional HIMYM standards)
J | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 12:25 am GMT -4
@ ian
I thnk the sub par Stella episodes are almost on purpose, they dont want us to like a character thats going to end up being bad for Ted. They made that mistake, at least for some viewers, with Victoria. I still hope she shows up this season… it would be de, wait for it, lightful.
Carrie | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 03:25 am GMT -4
Ted didn’t have a ring but Robin was wearing a ring on her left hand!!
Hee | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 04:23 am GMT -4
@JD I disagree that the Stella episodes have been bad, because Stella episodes have had some great scenes (Stella just didn’t happen to be in any of them).
Also, I have seen cast members and writers mention that they hope Sarah Chalke will eventually join the cast full-time. It seems like they hope for this irrespective of Stella being the mother or not.
Hee | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 05:42 am GMT -4

one of the best episodes in the series….couple observations. that im sure have been mentioned…
robin with the ring. but she has it on before the one year later scene ..if you look real carefully
barney…no tie..since when?
lily….loose shirt, no drink. preggers for sure!
and barney as an old man…LEGENDARY!

What’s with all the hate for the burger episode?????
It was in classic HIMYM style to take a break from the action and just have a fun episode that didn’t significantly advance the plot but allowed us a deeper glimpse into the characters and their situations.
Plus, it had a yelling Regis?
What’s not to like?
Tim | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 09:11 am GMT -4
@Hee
Dear Lord, I hope Stelliot Reed doesn’t join the cast full time. She is a total drag in every scene she’s in. Plus, adding a new character to this bunch would seem unnecessary and silly.
Ike | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 11:11 am GMT -4
I agree with Tim I liked World’s Greatest Burger, but I can understand why some people just didn’t get it. I don’t hate Stella, but she just doesn’t do it for me and I don’t think we need another full time member unless it’s the mother (or Victoria bc she’s amazing)
María | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 11:34 am GMT -4
I loved this episode, it’s the best in what we have seen of the new season.
I loved Super Canadian Robin!
I also noticed that besides Ted doesn’t wear a ring, Robin does! in her right hand!
natsirt | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 11:48 am GMT -4
Late in the game but I want to chime in with my opinion that this episode was not mediocre. This was the best episode so far this season.
NPH again showed that he is the best actor on the show. I really hope Barney keeps playing roles in his attempts to pick up bimbos.
Gaelle | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 12:55 pm GMT -4
I join the majority here and add my vote, I really loved this episode.
Loved the celabration of the intervention with a beer in hand, loved the arthritis five, loved the super-canadian Robin, and loved the fact that the flashbacks/flashforwards are back as in classic HIMYM episodes.
And the further it goes, the more I think Cobie is just hilarious and Neil is the best actor on television (could someone give the man his well deserved Emmy, please?!).
david | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 01:56 pm GMT -4
loved the tribute to back to the future! hilarious! this was the best episode of the season along with the premiere.
i also thought robin and barney were getting a bit cuddly at the end for the picture but missed all the other things. i’ll go back and watch it again.
Carrie | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 02:15 pm GMT -4
I watched the episode again and Robin was indeed wearing a ring before the one year later scene- my mistake!
I was thought it was implying RoBarn’s future together but guess not *sigh*
However, I did realize that Barney and Robin share a look before taking the picture, and they are indeed very cuddly!
I can’t wait for the next episode
One of my favorite lines from the episode:
At Barney’s ‘old man’ intervention Ted says
“I’m getting my flail.”
Pure Gold.

I too agree that this episode is the best of the young season so far. But this season is still a little off from the other three seasons. I am not quite sure why that is. It may be Stella or it may not be. The flashforward has gotten everyone, including myself, thinking of what the future may hold for our beloved characters. Even though the season has been mediocre, at best, I still think it is better than any other sitcom out there.
I have been a fan from episode one and will continue to be a fan!!! Long live HIMYM!!!
ashlee | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 04:07 pm GMT -4
overall i thought this was a great episode. I loved when they showed super-canadian robin, and everyone thought that she would hit the hockey puck into the wall, but instead barney punched the wall! and when everyone was drinking when they talked about stuart’s intervention. lily’s accent was priceless! 83(the barnicle always does use that number) year old barney was hilarious and showed how hard headed he can be(i heart nj-fist bump)when he made him picking up a 22 year old a bet! everyone but ted must have felt really strongly about not liking stella if they decided to have and intervention. i’m so glad to see that i’m not the only one who strongly dislikes stella and can’t wait til she and ted break up. i hope someone keeps the apartment and everyone still hangs out maclarens. in a previous season old ted said how much they all loved that apartment, and that someone else rented it now, so, of course, they all do eventually move out. but for now and i want at least ted to stay(lame will move into dowisetrepla). it didn’t seem like there was a lot of bro/robarn this ep. i cant wait til next mon to see whats next.
Kevin | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 05:06 pm GMT -4
So here’s my prediction:
Ted and Stella break up in next week’s episode. Reportedly, they decide to get married really spontaneously (sounds like Atlantic City, no?) and then something ruins everything. There will be an off week after that, (I think they are airing Sandcastles in the Sand) and I feel like Craig and Carter really want to give us a lot of stuff to talk about to tide us over the two weeks between episode 5 and 6.
Kress | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 05:50 pm GMT -4
In a few regards I can go both ways.
Everyone agrees that the members of the groups should not be drastically changed in any way, LAME moving to DOWISETREPLA is not drastic and should not adversely affect the plot line, Robin or Ted moving will obviously change things.
Simply put everyone is attacking the Marshall Seuss hat intervention, but if you all think back to “Little Boys” (season 3 episode 4) Barney and Ted discuss game and Marshall wants in on the conversation. Discussing “winning the game” while Ted and Barney discuss game, They state that Marshall’s idea of game is putting on a Dr. Seuss hat and going to see a Spin Doctors concert.
See also the landmark case of Lily vs. the Joey Buttafuco pants from “Stuff” (season 2 episode 16). Does anyone question that Marshall would rehash bad fashion trends?
Regarding the Burger episode, I think the episode is so divisive on the idea because you have to have lived the experience to really appreciate it, whether it was driving to White Castle (a la Harold and Kumar) or taking a road trip to a college football game, oftentimes the story is better than the experiences if they were relived, but at the same time you will have gratification from the journey. This is a central theme of the show and something most of us recognize as the lifeblood of the show.
J | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 06:12 pm GMT -4
Barney’s pickup gags need to become a weekly occurrence.
Hee | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 08:55 pm GMT -4
@Kress
I dislike the burger episode but loved Harold & Kumar. Who hasn’t had an experience like in Burger? surely most can identify with certain aspects of that ep. I can. Yet that’s just not enough to make it likeable. Jason Seagal didn’t do it for me (I struggle through most Marshall-centred episodes though I do like Marshall). Burger is just not what I want from HIMYM.
Lily is the one who suggests moving the party upstairs in the flash-forward. Maybe LAME are back in the apartment next year?
Barney not wearing a tie in the flash-forward (reminiscent of his no-tie in Do I Know You) is slightly more revealing than Barney & Robin huddling for a photo, which I thought was pretty normal, although definitely a tease.
Geri | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 09:50 pm GMT -4
Since most of us seem to love Victoria so much and want to see her back so badly, I move that we start a petition to send to Bays and Thomas to get her back on the show…if only for a guest spot!
Anyone with me?
Tim | Wednesday, October 15th, 2008 10:07 pm GMT -4
@ geri
Agreed! Victoria rocks. That’s why she was chosen for tedmosbyisnotajerk.com
Patrick | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 12:11 am GMT -4
I thought the show was way better than the last few weeks. The thing that ran long was barney as the old guy. A little long, but very funny nonetheless. I thought the episode sucked when Ted started with the “we all have to do what we have to do” speech. Could have done better.
Did anyone notice that when ted sits down, after he kick the couple out there isn’t a cell phone, then when the girl appears to ask for it back it’s there. Anyone else notice or am I seeing things.
Courtney | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 10:41 am GMT -4
JD, I swear I’m not cheating on HYMT, but re: Claudia, here’s this from legen-wait for it-dary:
“I got my information from the CBS press release for the episode, which says Claudia is played by Michelle Gunn, but the end credits say it was Virginia Williams. (Michelle Gunn actually played Mrs. Abergast – the mother of Lily’s student who got Ted’s letter by mistake.)”
Kress | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 03:01 pm GMT -4
@ hee
I understand that at certain times a “Marshall driven” episode is tough to swallow. I think we are all spoiled by how sharp the writing is when it is “ted-centric” rather than other characters.
I think at times when we see these episodes we lose track of the fact that Marshall is not telling the story.
ashlee | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 06:36 pm GMT -4
@ geri
i absolutely love victoria. when season 1 first aired, i actually hated her because i wanted robin and ted to get together so badly. however now i think it would be awesome if she came back because her and ted were so great together. she also had great chemistry with everyone else.
stella just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the group, but victoria proved that another person isn’t so bad. everyone seemed to love her (except robin who hated her because she had feelings for ted), so i think things could pick up where they left off from before she went to germany.
Joe | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 07:24 pm GMT -4
Loved this episode. Does anyone know the name of the song they played @ the end ?????
Andy | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 07:35 pm GMT -4
Someone asked about Marshall’s Pitt sweatshirt – he wears a lot of college shirts. Off the top of my head I know he has worn Notre Dame and Oregon State shirts in the past and I know there are a few others. Probably just trolls the Goodwills. Haha.
Courtney | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 11:31 pm GMT -4
The song at the end was Good to be home by the 88
Courtney | Thursday, October 16th, 2008 11:40 pm GMT -4
sorry.. It’s coming home.. by the 88

Not particularly related to this episode – but related to HIMYM in general, i have this one thing to ask: does anyone else feel that the Barney-Robin thing is some sort of replay on the Rachel-Joey thing in Friends (with Ted/Ross getting all upset and everything)?
Except that in Friends you know they weren’t fit for eachother, and you knew Rachel had to end up with Ross, and here Robin is surely not ending up with Ted (which is why I still have hopes for R B to work at some point).
Tash | Friday, October 17th, 2008 11:25 am GMT -4
I’m with almost everyone here- I loved this episode! I thought it had a lot of great lines, and went back to the roots of HIMYM! I must have watched it atleast 5-6 times since monday…I blame it on my internet being down
I thought the hat gag was hilarious! I don’t know why everyone thinks it’s so out of character for Marshall?
I see that a lot of people have noticed the ring Robin is wearing on her hand…but did anyone notice the one she’s wearing around her neck? And the fact that Barney waits for her at the end to get out of the booth? Yeah, Brotp ftw
Oh, and I agree with everyone here that saw that Lily didn’t drink the scotch…she’s totally preggo
Joe | Friday, October 17th, 2008 03:33 pm GMT -4
Thank you soo much Courtney. Haha ive been killing myself trying to find that song!!!!
Thanks again!

This was an awesome episode. Easily in my top 10 ever. I loved all of the interventions.
Ann | Saturday, October 18th, 2008 10:23 am GMT -4
I dont like the idea of ted ,Marshall and Lily leaving the apartment .
I wish they change their minds in the next episodes !:(
and i found the 1st episode of season 4 is the best until now …
Ann | Saturday, October 18th, 2008 11:08 am GMT -4
ok I checked the episode again
in the future scene and the writers are really evil ….
because each clue they give it could mean million of things
for example with lily not drinking the scotch
-maybe bacaue she didnt like the smell as all of them said it was not good as the regular beer that they used drink
-or it could be that she is pregnant
-or maybe she didnt want to take a sip in that particular moment !
same thing with robin ring it could mean million of things cause it was not a typical engagement ring .
p.s yes there was a mistake in the bar scene cause when the girl gets up she takes her cell phone with her . later she comes back asking about it .

the burger episode was awesome…. super human Philbin

Don’t understand the hate on the burger episode, I thought it had some classic HIMYM gags.
Gravity | Monday, October 20th, 2008 08:10 pm GMT -4
Also, 100 comments.
Wayne | Monday, October 20th, 2008 08:30 pm GMT -4
Just thought that as far as gags and wit were concerned the burger episode was lacking. Possibly one of the worst ever. Real shame. . Bounced back though with the intervention episode. I know thats gonna draw comment But that is my opinion and I am gonna stick to it.
Clyde | Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 02:35 pm GMT -4
I guess I’m the only one who thought that Ted kicking those people out of the booth was a dick move and completely out of character.
Hee | Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008 07:17 am GMT -4
@Clyde I kinda thought it was less about Ted and more of a joke between the show and the audience about how the gang always manages to get the same booth.
Jezebella | Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 01:23 pm GMT -4
Am joining the convo late on this episode as I’m just getting caught up on my recorded HIMYMs.
I hate to criticize the show but there is no such thing as a “maple log” at Tim Horton’s. I loved Super Canadian Robin but when she said that, I groaned b/c they easily could have gotten it so right (maybe an “apple fritter”, an “old fashion plain” or a “snack pack of Timbits”?)
Anyway, I enjoyed the episode very much — I love the flashbacks/flashforwards.
Tash | Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 02:53 pm GMT -4
To Jezebella:
I too thought it was a little strange that I had never heard of a maple log (having worked there for almost a year)…but then I thought it may have been one of their ‘doughnut of the month’ type things….remember the lemon drops or the triple chocolate? Sometimes they stay, sometimes they don’t. But that’s what I ended up telling myself to get over the possibiliy of a mistake…lol
Maybe the writers came to Canada and had a maple log back in 1995 or something?? lol
