Upcoming: The Chain of Screaming

Monday’s episode “The Chain of Screaming” formerly known as “The Simmons Report” centers around Marshall and, much like “I’m Not that Guy”, we get a cool guest star:

Marshall gets shouted down by his boss, “Artillery Arthur” (guest star Bob Odenkirk) - or, as Segel put it, “The wheel of abuse finally lands on Marshall.” The traumatic moment leads to the end of Marshall’s brief career as a high-paid corporate lawyer and sets him back on course to become a do-gooding environmental lawyer.

Segel, whose movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” opens April 18, said he’s happy to see his character on track again.

“Marshall has such a pure heart, so I like to see him achieve his goals,” he said. “I’m happy he ends up turning his back on the corporate world. I’m very proud of him.

“And I’m glad we get to see me at work. You get to see Marshall in ’schlubby husband’ mode most of the time. It’s nice to see me in a suit. I’m finally suiting up.”

The entire list of guest stars for the episode:

Ferguson - Jordan Black
Arthur - Bob Odenkirk
Bilson - Bryan Callen
Blauman - Taran Killam
Waiter - Avner Garbi

How will L.A.M.E. be able to afford their new place if Marshall doesn’t have the high paying job? It’ll be interesting to see what Bays and Thomas do with this development.

In that same article we got some cryptic hints at what the future has in store as we move toward the finale which, I hear, will end with a cliff hanger that has “real emotional weight” for the characters:

The overarching story will be that Ted, whose romantic relationship with Robin ended at the end of last season, comes out of his tailspin. In the process, he begins to question why he hangs around with a lothario like Barney.

“Ted had been turning into Barney, so we’re putting him back on track as the nice guy we all fell in love with in the first place,” Bays said. “The second half of the season will move him a little closer to what Marshall and Lily have, but as a result, it will make him question having a Barney in his life. Some big events will put that in motion.”

Lothario is a great word. I wish I had more opportunities to use it. What do we think? Will “The Chain of Screaming” be as good as similar episodes about Marshall’s job such as “Life Among the Gorillas” or “I’m Not That Guy”? What type of event is coming up? The hints given so far have felt pretty ominous.

I love HIMYM, it’s one of my all time favorite series (between that and Arrested Development). But the first “half” of season 3 (all pre-strike episodes) has made me feel kind of uneasy about the show and very disappointed. I use to really like Ted, him and Marshal were my favorites, but he just hasn’t been the same since Robin and him broke up. He’s become, well Barney. I began to wonder if HIMYM had already reached its turning point, jumped the shark as they would say. Ted was just so out of character that it made me mad at the series. But these past few episodes my thoughts and feelings have begun to change and this statement makes me realize how much I truly love this show. I rashly thought that the show was just going downhill with the creation of what Bays and Thomas call “Outlaw Ted”. I was wrong, and thank goodness I was! I should have remembered that Bays and Thomas are creative geniuses and wouldn’t do anything completely random and terrible like changing a character’s personality so drastically for the worst. The first post-strike episode, “No Tomorrow” showed Ted beginning to realize how he’s changed for the worse and “10 Sessions” showed the return of Romantic Ted. It’s time Ted truly looked at the ugly creation of Outlaw Ted and put him to rest where he belongs.

    “hey barney?”
    “yeah ted?”
    “we can’t be friends anymore”

“and that kids was the last time I ever saw Unc-, uh, Barney.”

^ is that an actual quote from the ep, john d’arc? i’m guessing not, but if it is, you definetly should have posted above that quote that it is a huge spoiler! im annoyed now.

uh, no? It is most certainly not a spoiler.

It’s a scene I made up to explain this “life changing” event that involves Ted not wanting to be with Barney anymore.

Ever notice how we don’t really know what happened to Barney in the future?

But on the other hand, we don´t really know what happened to Lily either. All we know, is that she is still married to Marshall, and that´s it.

Also, Ted calls Barney “uncle Barney” in his stoeries. I think he wouldn´t do that if Barney was not a part of Ted´s life in the future. It would be just Barney then. Or “We were all friends with ths guy one. His name was Barney.”

I have the feeling, that a huge change in Barney´s character is coming. But that´s just apersonal guess.

like him taking Robin in his arms, and whisking her off to travel the world?

isn’t Bryan Callen’s character one of the douchey guys from “Nothing Good…”? He doesn’t work at N,H,& W. He works with Barney, doesn’t he?

Speaking of which, I always assumed Barney worked with some sort of law firm. I know, the tennis ball thing, but he talks about perjury for work, and he’s rivals with a lawyer at NHW.

I have a theory that Robin will be the next one to get married (she caught the bouquet at Lily and Marshall’s wedding…it could mean anything, but HIMYM is all about fate, and the moment was played out really lowkey in “Something Blue”…like a subtle clue into the future). I also think that Robin and Barney will end up together.

So, after a night of bro-ing together, Robin and Barney get married after a series of escalating dares and bets. (Cause Barney can’t resist a bet when money is invovled).

It’s the most plausibe way I can think of to get a Robin/Barney pairing, but probably won’t happen. It’s a little too similar to GOB and Wife of GOB on “Arrested Development”.

@JackAtak I did not. That’s hilarious though. Good catch.
