World Premiere: Robin Sparkles - Sandcastles in the Sand
Variety posted Robin Sparkles’ song in its entirety. Alas, it’s only an audio file. It’s still freaking legendary though. It really sounds like a top 40 song from the eighties (or mid nineties in Canada.) Click the image above to check it out.
As soon as I can find an mp3 of this I’ll post it here. Likewise for video. Check back to this post over the next few days as I’ll be updating it as new media is available.
For our Canadian readers (I know you’re out there) is it true that the eighties didn’t make it to Canada until ‘93?
Thanks to reader John for the link.
Update #3: The mp3 is now available. Download here.
Update #2: Part of the video is available on MySpace.
Update: Check out the lyrics:
Met you at the mall
Didn’t know how far I would fall
My friends said I was a fool (You’re a fool) (Shut up)
Cause you were older and got kicked out of school (You’re so rad)
Together we were gonna travel the globe
From Alberta to OntarioBut now I’m building
Sandcastles in the sand (sandcastles in the sand)
Thought I could fly when you held my hand (thought I could fly)
(Now) Eternity turns to black and white
It was the greatest week and a half
Of my lifeWe used to go to the beach
Back when happiness was in my reach (so close)
On our favorite bench
We’d sit and talk and you taught me to French
You’re good at pull-ups and have radical hair
I hate my dad, he’s so unfair (you don’t understand our love)But now I’m building
Sandcastles in the sand
Thought I could fly when I held your hand (I was wrong)
Eternity turns to black and white
It was the greatest week and a half
Of my lifeIt’s crazy
No one gets me
Castles wash away
Come back please
I changed my mind
Let’s go all the way
I miss youSandcastles in the sand (I miss your hair)
Thought I could fly when I held your hand (I thought you were the one)
Sandcastles wash away (I’m ready, let’s do it)
And all that’s left is some sand the next day (sand the next day)
Sandcastles may be… (I’m on the pill now)
But now all they do is remind me of you (let’s go all the way, you said it’d be OK, I’m sorry)
Sandcastles wash away

Awesome! Love the bridge. Especially love Cobie Smulders whispering “Let’s go all the way.”
I wish I could have lost my virginity to that song.
Mallorymike | April 16, 2008 @ 10:08 am
Well, seeing how I was only 7 in 1993, I don’t overly remember the degree of eighties-ness.
Looking around at all the spandex tights, oversized shirts and big hair girls my age seem to be sporting nowadays, I’d say the eighties have only JUST arrived here in Canada.
JD | April 16, 2008 @ 10:21 am
@Eric J I just did

JD | April 16, 2008 @ 2:35 pm
@Natalie I believe it is. She sand Let’s Go to the Mall. I think that’s half the fun, it’s really Cobie Smulders.

Hmm, so maybe this is where all that sand was coming from?
Jess | April 16, 2008 @ 7:57 pm
I was pretty little in ‘93 but looking back my mom dressed me in lots of neon and leggings… so I believe it.
@MalloryMike, I totally agree. Every store I walk in has some sort of eighties throwback thing going on. Long live the 80s haah!

According to TV Squad, Cobie Smulders is going to be on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight. Perhaps to talk about the newest Robin Sparkles single.
Kevin | April 16, 2008 @ 10:23 pm
Every Canadian “fact” mentioned by Robin on that show is basically a lie. The highest mountain peak in Canada? Named Mount Logan, not Mount whatever Bays and Thomas made up. Our cops are NOT called Mounties, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are similar to how the FBI work in the US.
And the 80’s did NOT come to Canada in 1993, the only American thing that came to Canada in 1993 was our SECOND STRAIGHT World Series trophy!! Thank you Joe Carter!!
Mallorymike | April 16, 2008 @ 10:32 pm
Mount Waddington is a real mountain. It may not be the highest mountain peak in Canada, but it is the highest peak in BC, where Robin is from.
I love the tongue-in-cheek Canada jokes on the show.
John | April 16, 2008 @ 11:24 pm
I totally love this song
And the vid is awesome too!
Viridis | April 16, 2008 @ 11:28 pm
@Kevin:
What about Danby’s? Please tell me that Grizzly Paw Ice Cream Sandwiches are real!
Mallorymike | April 16, 2008 @ 11:46 pm
@Viridis: Sadly, Danby’s is made up (as are the ice cream sandwiches). But then again, so is McLaren’s, so I’m not to bogged down by “accuracy”.
Substitue Danby’s for Tim Hortons, and Grizzly Paw Ice Cream Sandwiches for Timbits (or an Iced Cap…mmmm), and it would be truly Canadian. In fact, I’ve been waiting to hear a Timmy’s mention on HIMYM.
Geri | April 17, 2008 @ 12:10 am
@Kevin - HELL YEAH JOE CARTER RULED! Don’t forget we have the only hockey team to have won the Stanley Cup 24 times - my hometown team - the Montreal Canadiens!
@ MalloryMike - don’t say iced cap…you’re making me want one and it’s only a 2 block walk in all 4 directions for me to find a Tim Hortons

I was alive in 1993 and no it did NOT take the 80’s that long to get to Canada. We had the same crappy synth pop music as you did in the U.S.
The Canada jokes are awesome though!
Jess | April 17, 2008 @ 11:50 am
I love the Canada jokes too. Now I’m craving an iced cap… and of course the weather is finally warm enough to have one without freezing haha.
@Geri GO HABS!

Just watch any Alanis Video before say she became “Alanis Morrisette,” and you’ll know. Canada always seemed to be a couple years back of anything that was happening in the States. I had a friend who had really big Robin Sparkles hair (complete with the curly perm) in like 1992/1993. She used to also wear a lot of colorful Bill Cosby sweaters circa 1988.
I want an ice cap right now, but it’s snowing right now. I don’t want to go outside.

I love the show How I met your mother and I watch it ALL the time and the Robin Sparkles lets go to the mall is the funniest and coolest thing I have ever seen and the sandcatles in the sand seems like a good video and song!

Tim Hortons mention is a must.
Damn it you’ve mentioned Timbits! There’s a massive soccer game in the afternoon, and I’ve been arguing with myself I need to go to Timmys to get something (but I’m so lazy to actually get up and go) to eat during.
Not helping, grrrr…

I have to say, as a Canadian, the jokes about us are awesome but of course exaggerated. I think that their accent is quite strange, I’ve only really heard people say “aboot” when I went south (AKA to North Dakota). Although, being from Saskatchewan I totally appreciated the joke aobut summer being a week and a half in July. It’s like how we say there are 4 seasons here, almost winter, winter, still winter, and july. We are a bit behind in some things but the 80’s ended roughly the same time here as in the states, and then there was the grunge and hair band transition…ugg.

I absolutely love this show and Robin is awesomely and insanely hot.
