Mallorymike, Looking it up there actually is a Danbys service station which is to me implied in the context and also, (I am not from Canada just have too much time on my hands) I have found that there is grizzly paw Ice cream sandwiches. Though I did look at what you had to say and they look like what I think grizzly paw would look like.

@cherries:

I don't know what part of Canada you were in circa 1993, but at my school we were all pretty much dressing like grunge-y extras from My So Called Life, with combat boots and plaid shirts (wince) and old lady dresses. And sometimes we were hippies.

I think that was pretty era-appropriate.

And nobody listened to Alanis. When Jagged Little Pill came out, it was the first I knew that the girl from You Can't Say That On Television even had a singing career. We were listening to the Pixies and Nirvana and local bands like Me Mom and Morgentaler and the Snitches (I'm from Montreal).

I am pretty sure small town Canada has a lot more in common with small town USA, and that the greater conservatism in small towns means that trends shift more slowly generally. I know where my father lived, in the US, there was a lot of lycra being worn at that time, and some very pouffy bangs. One of my most hilarious memories of that era, actually, is my stepmother (from Ohio) telling me to tuck my shirt into my jeans because I "looked like a lesbian". She referred to my clunky nineties shoes as "clod-hoppers".

@Mallorymike
There's no way of knowing that Robin is from BC. She refers to so many different places in Canada and I can guarantee that no one from BC would name their dog sir scratchewan!!!

I hate Robin! Even though she is the American made Canadian stereotype, she is so damned annoying and the stupidest Canadian ever. Not to mention she is not from anyone place in Canada since everytime she talk about Canada she is referring to a different place. I wish she would fall off the Brooklyn bridge into the Hudson.

I have to say, as a Canadian, the jokes about us are awesome but of course exaggerated. I think that their accent is quite strange, I've only really heard people say "aboot" when I went south (AKA to North Dakota). Although, being from Saskatchewan I totally appreciated the joke aobut summer being a week and a half in July. It's like how we say there are 4 seasons here, almost winter, winter, still winter, and july. We are a bit behind in some things but the 80's ended roughly the same time here as in the states, and then there was the grunge and hair band transition...ugg.

Quote: Substitue Danby’s for Tim Hortons, and Grizzly Paw Ice Cream Sandwiches for Timbits (or an Iced Cap…mmmm), and it would be truly Canadian. In fact, I’ve been waiting to hear a Timmy’s mention on HIMYM.

Tim Hortons mention is a must.

Damn it you've mentioned Timbits! There's a massive soccer game in the afternoon, and I've been arguing with myself I need to go to Timmys to get something (but I'm so lazy to actually get up and go) to eat during.

Not helping, grrrr...

Just watch any Alanis Video before say she became "Alanis Morrisette," and you'll know. Canada always seemed to be a couple years back of anything that was happening in the States. I had a friend who had really big Robin Sparkles hair (complete with the curly perm) in like 1992/1993. She used to also wear a lot of colorful Bill Cosby sweaters circa 1988.

I want an ice cap right now, but it's snowing right now. I don't want to go outside.

I love the Canada jokes too. Now I'm craving an iced cap... and of course the weather is finally warm enough to have one without freezing haha.

@Kevin - HELL YEAH JOE CARTER RULED! Don't forget we have the only hockey team to have won the Stanley Cup 24 times - my hometown team - the Montreal Canadiens!

@ MalloryMike - don't say iced cap...you're making me want one and it's only a 2 block walk in all 4 directions for me to find a Tim Hortons ;)

I was alive in 1993 and no it did NOT take the 80's that long to get to Canada. We had the same crappy synth pop music as you did in the U.S. :)

The Canada jokes are awesome though!

@Viridis: Sadly, Danby's is made up (as are the ice cream sandwiches). But then again, so is McLaren's, so I'm not to bogged down by "accuracy".

Mount Waddington is a real mountain. It may not be the highest mountain peak in Canada, but it is the highest peak in BC, where Robin is from.

I love the tongue-in-cheek Canada jokes on the show.

Every Canadian "fact" mentioned by Robin on that show is basically a lie. The highest mountain peak in Canada? Named Mount Logan, not Mount whatever Bays and Thomas made up. Our cops are NOT called Mounties, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are similar to how the FBI work in the US.

And the 80's did NOT come to Canada in 1993, the only American thing that came to Canada in 1993 was our SECOND STRAIGHT World Series trophy!! Thank you Joe Carter!!

According to TV Squad, Cobie Smulders is going to be on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight. Perhaps to talk about the newest Robin Sparkles single.

I was pretty little in '93 but looking back my mom dressed me in lots of neon and leggings... so I believe it.

@MalloryMike, I totally agree. Every store I walk in has some sort of eighties throwback thing going on. Long live the 80s haah!
