@Viridis Danby's actually does exist, but it's only in Ontario and not BC. The Grizzly Paw is an ice cream place in Alberta.

Since Tim Horton's is found everywhere now, not just Canada... I wouldn't consider it to be the replacement name for Danby's since there is only 1 Danby's in Canada.

I think the grizzly bear claw is a reference to beaver tails(the pastry)! I'm from Toronto, and I have never heard of it. I like the Canadian jokes but they are exaggerated. Our accents, Toronto's at least isn't much different. I find New York's accent weird, and Boston's the worst. I still can't understand when you guys say wheel or will because you pronounce both as "will".

Mallorymike, Looking it up there actually is a Danbys service station which is to me implied in the context and also, (I am not from Canada just have too much time on my hands) I have found that there is grizzly paw Ice cream sandwiches. Though I did look at what you had to say and they look like what I think grizzly paw would look like.

@cherries:

I don't know what part of Canada you were in circa 1993, but at my school we were all pretty much dressing like grunge-y extras from My So Called Life, with combat boots and plaid shirts (wince) and old lady dresses. And sometimes we were hippies.

I think that was pretty era-appropriate.

And nobody listened to Alanis. When Jagged Little Pill came out, it was the first I knew that the girl from You Can't Say That On Television even had a singing career. We were listening to the Pixies and Nirvana and local bands like Me Mom and Morgentaler and the Snitches (I'm from Montreal).

I am pretty sure small town Canada has a lot more in common with small town USA, and that the greater conservatism in small towns means that trends shift more slowly generally. I know where my father lived, in the US, there was a lot of lycra being worn at that time, and some very pouffy bangs. One of my most hilarious memories of that era, actually, is my stepmother (from Ohio) telling me to tuck my shirt into my jeans because I "looked like a lesbian". She referred to my clunky nineties shoes as "clod-hoppers".

@Mallorymike
There's no way of knowing that Robin is from BC. She refers to so many different places in Canada and I can guarantee that no one from BC would name their dog sir scratchewan!!!
