They have breaks b/c tv shows in america have all kind of specials that come on. March Madness, Award shows.. etc. Also, I think it gives the writers a few extra weeks to either catch up or to make sure they have shows done in advance

Partly unrelated, but can someone explain to me as a non-American viewer why there is a break mid-season? Not just for HIMYM but also for stuff like Scrubs, etc.

I agree that the best episodes of the season have definitely been the ones that focused on Barney and Robin. They combine the perfect amounts of hilarity and heart. Maybe those episodes are kind of blinding me to other individually not as great episodes, I don't know. Regardless, I've enjoyed this season.

im really enjoying this season as well, it has some of my favourite episodes, but at the same time it has some of the weakest episodes as well. it's so strange, i dunno, i'll go against the grain once again and say that i didn't thought much of this episode.

i loved that they cast frances conroy, and i thought she was amazing, and she could very well be barney's mom. but i thought that marshall/lilly and robin stories didn't work that well, the robin and grant one was particularly bad, imo.

i liked ted over-acting. im actually liking ted more now that he isnt obsessed with finding the love of his life. also, love douchey college ted, so i liked the small flashaback they had of him teaching the kids how to act.

and i also want to see the barney/robin storyline advance, they will probably stall till the end of season…. but i hope they keep playing with it, i thought that the best episodes the season/and series (the funniest, and the two with more heart) were both focused on them. 'do i know you?' and 'benefits'.

anyway, i was happy to get a new episode before march. thank you JD

It's odd because honestly I've been enjoying this season maybe the most. Although they do need to get Ted back on track, it makes sense that he would just be sort of wandering after Stella. They've been spending time slowly building Barney and Robin instead. As per the end of this episode, I really hope we don't have to wait too much longer for that.

Barney's mom is great (as a Six Feet Under fan, I approve of casting as well). And I think the whole super-cheesy sitcom life is a great nod to how different this show is from stuff like that.

I also liked the idea of Robin showing more of warming up to kids when she talked to Grant. Even though he was a very weird child.

Overall, this was a very entertaining episode and I always love the glimpses into Barney's backstory. He's definitely the character with the most mystery and the more we hear about him, the more interesting he becomes. I guess I would be more upset about Ted's love life kind of stalling this season if it weren't for the fact that (sorry) I just find Barney a lot more interesting.

when i saw Ted do that i thought "Is he having a stroke?" I loved the episode but i'm starting to think of Ted as a bit of a jackass. What was he thinking? I still ROFL at it but Ted is straying way off from the Ted we all know and love. I thing his past pretentiousness is hilarious but when present day Ted relapses i don't like it, character wise. The comedic effect i get, and i like, but get the character back on track.
Pretentious present day Ted me no likey!!
One thing i absolutely loved in that scene… Barney got slaped although he got up a lot faster than he would if it had been Marshal doing it. When are the 2 remaining slaps from the slapbet coming? It's been over a year since the last one.

Yeah I think they intentionally sitcomed up the music for this episode. Man this was great (had to watch through another site). Barney didn't fall far from the tree and his mom was legendary in her day. Barney being a momma's boy fits. I loved Ted over-acting. Barney listen to your mother tell Robin how you feel.

great episode but did anyone else think the music was a bit off? It's different from the usual BGMs on the show. I believe it was done intentionaly for this episode, to give it a more sitcomy feel, given the veritable sitcom that Barney puts up for his mom. Or maybe its a temporary BGM in the preair version…
And BTW, Loretta Stinson rules.
