Scrubs Series Finale Discussion
By JD

It’s not often we stray from HIMYM here but with a momentous occasion such as this, I think it’s appropriate.
So, Scrubs is over. Eight years, two networks, and uncountable replays of each and every episode I can safely say that outside HIMYM it’s the show I’m most familiar with.
Are you guys fans? If so, to what degree? Did you like the finale? What about it? Beyond here spoilers lie, so keep on moving if you havent seen it yet.
What Was Good
I love that JD and Eliot ended up together. I’ve been a fan of their pairings since the beginning and love to see a happy ending. I know a lot of people—die hard Scrubs fans—who were “sick” of the on-again, off-again. Not me. Seeing them argue over morning sex, whether or not Eliot was moving in, it was all perfect. I’m curious what you guys think of the Eliot Reed character considering how much you hate Stella. I love Eliot and I love Sarah Chalke. Not only is she freaking beautiful but she’s awkward, quirky, and hilarious.
JD and Turk might be the original bromance (as was pointed out to me tonight.) I love all the hugging. I love how unapologetic they are about each other. I especially love the running “you smell like ___”.
Dr. Cox. They managed to let him express his feelings without compromising the character. Well done. His speech about JD was moving.
Janitor. I love the outtakes they’ve been doing this season becuase it shows Janitor adlibbing his crazy stories and they’re always freaking hilarious. This guy is awesome, why isn’t he in more things? I like that we finally learned his name too,
The closing montage. This is what really got me choked up. Seeing all the people from JDs past come back was awesome. Some more than others, but it was a nice touch, and well done. This leading into the play out of the future really got the tears going. This ending was like the opposite of Six Feet Under’s finale, but equally emotional. I couldn’t quite tell, did anyone catch if the song playing was by Colin Hay who has featured so prominently throughout the series?
That’s it. I’m sad the show is over but wow, what a final season. I’ve already watched all the episodes from this year over and over and I know I will continue to do so. Scrubs is just one of the most rewatchable shows out there.
Here’s to eight great years. One of the best shows is no longer.

Great recap! Scrubs will be missed. I love that JD and Elliott finally committed to one another. I felt like a part of me died when I heard the janitor's name, I think I will keep calling him Janitor… It was nice to finally hear the truth about the penny in the door. The last eagle with Turk and JD is awesome!

The song is "The Book of Love" by Peter Gabriel. I thought it was by Colin Hay too. I thought the Scrubs finale was perfect.

GOD. I read six feet under and I had to stop reading.
I have not watched the series, but I have been told that 6 feet under has the best series finale ever. So, I will try to find the time this summer to watch it whole.
I only saw the pilot of scrubs and I did not like it much. I wonder if the show is pretty much as the first episode…
BTW/ I could not write still my feelings for himym 4×22. Only have to say that being Stella the final character under the umbrella is what makes HIMYM big. Because it is not like any other series. I didnot like how Stella ended the thing, but I gotta say I am glad to see her around if that makes ted find The One

to High Hoper: the first episodes of scrubs are not as nearly as genious as the rest of the series.. Season 1 is more of how JD got started, made friends then in the later seasons its so insanely brilliant.
Awesome recap. I also thought this Season finale was really good, love the part when JD and Turks son and daughter get engaged and JD feints hahaha

i have always loved the way this show used music. and the colin haye ep is one of my favorites (along with my day off with somewhere over the rainbow)
the song was "the Book of Love", Peter Gabriel vocals. its a fav of mine. we didn't start watching the ep right away. my daughter called and said "turn on scrubs RIGHT NOW" and i was like why? and she said, there's a music thing. and i thought it was like the musical episode. when the song came on, i cried like a baby. finished up the series quite nicely. you knew that's how they'd all turn out, and fits with the lyrics…
at our house, we made little bets as to what the janitors name was. i said john, my daughter said some bizare name, and my man said tommy. so when he told j.d. his name was glenn, it was a little bit of a let down. then, when the other guy said "hi tony" i thought he said tommy. anyways, the way the janitor was, who knows. maybe neither was his name…

oops, the ep is my way home, not my day off

I'm like you JD, the closing montage, especially the part with book of love and then JD's future/fantasy choked me up a bit. The wife was even making fun of me, evidently that kind of thing isn't considered "manly"
Also, on my site I usually on recap HIMYM but decided to commentate on the last Season of Scrubs. I'm glad I did. Not only did I find quite a few HIMYM fans that loved Scrubs as well but it really helped me to enjoy the season more.
The thing I loved most about the finale is how it gave closure on the Series without making anything definite. Maybe the Janitor's name was Glenn, maybe JD and Elliot do get married, maybe JD and Turk are always friends… but it left it in a way where even if you didn't like it you could jsut imagine something else. I digress.
Anyone notice that Bill Lawrence was the janitor outside at the end? B.L. has also talked about possibly continuing Scrubs, but it would never be the same. Especially without JD (Zach) and possibly some other characters.
Anyways, nice mention, good choice to stray fro HIMYM for one post. Best shows ever five?

I thought the finale was perfect for Scrubs. I've said in the discussions of HIMYM that i consider NPH an acting god but Zach Braff is also in a class of his own, he made this character his own. I tend to hate characters like J.D. but this guy is different and i love him and all the characters of Scrubs for 8 years. And i think it would be awesome that, as with the "Bro Code" they would publish that book of Doctor Cox's rants. Cox rulz big time.
Favorite line (among so many in this episode) :
Carla (to J.D.): "Tell me my husband will love me as much as he does you."
2nd best:
Dr. Kelso: "Get as much tail as you can, Dorian"
And, though they threw us a courve ball with that orderly calling him Tony, i think the Janitor was honest with J.D. and told him his real name.
Goodbye Scrubs, you will be missed.

I love this show. I have watched ever since the pilot aired back in 2001, so this was a big event for me. Even though seasons 5-7 were less than great (talking toilet fantasy, anyone?), season 8 was a return to form. I feel like these characters were wrapped up so well that I can't see a reason to have another season.
I liked the ambiguous nature of the ending. JD knows what he wants to happen, but who knows if it will happen that way? Life is what you make of it. I also think that it was done this way in order to appease the people who hate JD/Elliott. I have had an aversion to it since he embarrassed her at Turk and Carla's wedding rehearsal, but this season I liked how the couple matured. They seemed less petty.
I am not sure that we did not learn the Janitor's name. He was screwing with JD. That is how he operates. Notice that orderly called him Tommy (or Tony?), and he answered to it. I honestly cannot say if the Janitor was being honest or not. Again, like the montage, it was open ended for fans to think what they want.
I loved Dr. Cox's speech about JD. I loved the rants book. I loved how Carla came to terms with the fact that Turk may love his best friend more than her.
And I think the best part was Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs) as the Janitor tearing down the banner. It was ironic, because as JD was musing about what was in store for him, the man who created him was basically ending his story (physically and literally). It worked really well. And as JD got off into the car and the theme music played, I was satisfied with how it ended. I will miss this show dearly.

Apologies to HIMYM, but Scrubs was my favorite show on the air (and probably comes in just a smidge behind Wings as my favorite comedy of all time). Maybe not these last two seasons, but over it's whole run, it was unparalleled in combining humor with real emotion and drama. I thought the finale did as well as it could; when a show you love ends, you're always going to be more disappointed about it ending than you are happy with how it ends, but they did a great job with it.

um…that wasn't the SERIES FINALE. it was the season finale, with zach braff leaving the show. it could be a series finale if they decide not to pick it back up. that wasn't the janitor's name. he made one up to tell jd and then that orderly called him something different. they said they'd never reveal his name until the show ended, not when the season ended.

Scrubs is over. Even the creators have said so. They may bring the universe of Scrubs and even some characters back but with a new name. And even in the unlikely chance they would turn around and call it Scrubs anyway, without J.D., it may have the same name but it will never be the same show.

I have to say that my favorite part was when Carla and JD said goodbye. It seemed the most real of all the goodbye's, the just sitting next to each other and contemplating what happens next and how do you go on without the person next to you. I thought the lack of any grand goodbye's was also pretty good because that's not how it works in real life and so it shouldn't in the show. Very good episode, a bit sentimental but that's par for the Scrubs course.

i just read a column written 5 days ago that they renewed te show for another season. Zack will appear in 6 episodes to finish some story lines and a new cast will be put in.
Im not kidding!
murob | Monday, June 8th, 2009 02:40 pm GMT -4
The Finale song was actually performed by the cast. Zach sang the majority, Donald did the solo, and everyone else that could play an instrument did so. It's all on youtube; the recording and booth work and all.
murob | Monday, June 8th, 2009 02:42 pm GMT -4
The janitor doesn't have a name. the writers wrote him just the few lines he had in the pilot. he was supposed to be an extra, but everyone took such a liking to him and his antics that he was kept around for a part as a main cast member. He is only the Janitor, and has no other name. you will never have a legit name for him. Never.
Jules | Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 02:38 pm GMT -4
in the final episode he gives a fake name to JD, then, he is called by his real name moments later.

Scrubs is the most amazing show I have ever seen, I cannot believe it is over. Ever since it began I have been a fan it just blew me away..even though the first couple of seasons werent as powerful and amazing I still absolutely loved it. My friend and I write songs about the show..it is kind of our therapy when we cannot watch it lol a little sad I know but thats how much we love it. The last episode absolutley blew me away, I cried before it even came on because I knew it was the end and then at the end of the episode I was still bawling my eyes out after an hour when it finished..then i called my friend and we had our discussion (and therapy) and we just reminissed about all the amazing moments we have had watching the show and also of the shows hilarious jokes and stories. It will never get old but sadly has to end. We love you Scrubs forever.

I love scrubs!!! I have all the seasons on dvd and re-watch them all the time. Seasons 1-5 were the best and season 6 was only alright. Season 7 was just god awful but this last season has been good and seems to have gotten back to the heart of what scrubs is all about

I just wanna now what does ted say to the janitor when he doesnt recycle, when ted tells him what every one he has ever loved told him?

You just recapped the finale brilliantly. It was amzing, and extremely sad. I never thought Scrubs could get as sad as the Lovern car-crash episode’s. I think the new Scrubs will be quite average. It isn’t only based on the Hospital, but it’s based on a college, with students learning to become doctors.
Great recap man. Scrubs rules forever!
