Season 4, Episode 13: Three Days of Snow Discussion
Didn’t catch the episode yet but wanted to give you guys a space to discuss. Will watch and recap tomorrow.
What perfect timing, since it’s been snowing in Brooklyn all weekend. Like they said in Single Stamina, there’s something beautiful about NYC covered in snow.
Structurally, with the airplane interior shots, Ted and Barney trying to scam girls, Marshall in the car, this episode reminds me a lot of Sweet Taste of Liberty. Maybe too because this episode had a similar pacing and reckless romance that mirrored the first season. The show’s come a long way, this was a small return to what made us all love it in the first place.
The Good
I am a sucker for the Tarantino style foreshadowing in episodes like this, Brunch, World’s Greatest Couple, etc. Love the ‘told from the future’ format that allows for this. Also for the mind-benders they play with timelines ala the sweet split-screen reveal at the airport. That’s some heavy storytelling hutzpah there.
I love all the man-schooling Barney gives Ted. Ah Ted, he means well but just doesn’t have the practice. “We’re not the ‘can we come see your show’ guys. We’re the older guys who never showed up and whose approval they now crave.” We need to all listen to Barney’s advice, misogynistic as it might be, it’s true.
The back and forth with Ted and Barney, specifically when Ted doesn’t find Barney’s jokes/goals/lists/games funny feels so realistic. “What do you get when you get five in a row?” “I. get. bingo.”

This is weird but does anyone know the name of that style of strip on Barney’s shirt? Is it just a pinstripe? It’s a specific style that I like and want to find more of.
It’s no George Clinton but I dig Marshall’s Lily-stepping-out fantasy. His and Lily’s both show their own self-conscious feelings. Marshall wishes he was some Gael-type hot Latin guy and Lily is embarrassed that Marshall is freakishly tall.
HOLY GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST IS THAT CARL THE BARTENDER IT IS OMG HE LOOKS DIFFERENT BUT THANK GOD HE’S HERE HOW WERE THINGS JOE WE MISSED YOU
New goal: become such a ‘regular’ at a bar they’ll give me the keys. That’d be legendary. I also need to play more board games just for the opportunity to dramatically flip them up as I make a bold statement. I don’t wear glasses so I have no other prop.

I love the man-tage of them bartending. God damn do I (and every guy) want to do that. Amirite? Nice to see Hendrick’s showing label-out. Sponsor? I need them to sponsor my life.
I think everyone’s had telepathic conversations now. Even if Barney’s brain just broadcasts the Beach Boys. I bet most of the girls he meets get Sloop John B stuck in their head. (High five for the three of you who get that.)
I love that they’ve made Marshall, the one man who isn’t head-over-heels in love with Robin, able to call her out. “Maybe you’re just jealous because you’ve never been in a relationship long enough to develop them.” And also that neither of them come out to be right. It’s how people really argue.

All of Robin’s facial expressions during her robot sequence and after are perfect. These two are hilarious together. And when they came back and Robin is yelling at him, there are tears in her eyes. Her character is so vulnerable in the past few episodes. But being Canadian, shouldn’t she know what happens when a plow goes by? Oh, she had the sun-roof (do they call it a snow roof in Canada?) plan B locked and loaded.

Maybe it’s the 90s alt-rock lover in me but I dig Robin’s jacket. Mmm, Janeane Garofalo.
The Bad
What’s up with Ted’s unevenly striped sweater in the beginning and Marshall swirling his white wine? These are modern men, but not that modern. Also: sweaty, tank top and jeans shorts Robin, while honest, is less hot than I’d have imagined. That’s it, this was a pretty good episode.
Favorite Moments
- By now I think it’s official, Barney’s squatting, arm swinging run is fantastic.
- “Already ran that play bro, they’re 21, we’re good.”
- The “totally, awesome” bit was funny because Ted and Barney do say those things a lot.
- Hey, it’s that old lady who swears.
- I love that Ranjit knows LAME’s routines. Their romance really is legendary, in the actual way, as in, the stuff of legends, not just the Barney way.
- “Why is that human leaking?”
- Love the ‘dibs’ after Star Wars reference (which, btw, no girl that young and in college would say) Barney’s dibs is good too.
- “I reciprocate in principal with the caveat there seems to be a bit of a surplus here on my end.” Best phone sex ever. Kaboom, Lily’s just been lawyered.
Closing
That was fun and corny in a Love Actually kind of way for Marshall to have the marching band show up at the airport. I didn’t shed a tear the way some of you guys did but it made me smile.
“BINGO!” Nice. Classy move doing her in the bathroom too. And Ted, the coolest band name isn’t Puzzles, it’s “Soda Can Girth”. And to whomever asked why 30 year old Ted is hitting on college girls, I know there’s no such thing as a stupid question, but… I mean, he made sure they were 21.
Finally, I wrote this quite late. It reads like a college paper (which, incidentally, are usually written quite late.) Sorry.

Isn't Ted 30? Why does he want to sleep with a college undergrad so badly? I thought he was looking for the one
John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 6:44 am
After you think you've found the one, and she leaves you at the altar, you get a little reticent to find another "the one". Sadly, this appears to mean that Ted is now back to Season 3 Ted.
John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 6:48 am
My comment from the other thread still stands: "Why am I tearing up?
WHY AM I TEARING UP? *sniff* This episode should have aired last year in December!!! "
Serenichi | January 20, 2009 @ 7:47 am
It snowed today in Baltimore, so I appreciated this episode that much more. Also, the ending was so sweet, I felt myself tear up.
Sara | January 20, 2009 @ 8:45 am
I loved loved LOVED this episode, but I kept asking myself, wouldn't the TSA restriction on liquids on flights apply to the six packs (after 2006)? I'm assuming, of course, that she was carrying them on, I guess she could have checked them…am I overthinking this?
Pizzaboy | January 20, 2009 @ 8:55 am
It was a great episode for fans of Marshall and Lily. And the whole twist with the days got me pretty good. haha Although I was disappointed to not see anything else about Barney's feelings for Robin. I also missed scenes of the whole gang together. But yay for Carl! He's back!
JustinDickinson | January 20, 2009 @ 9:35 am
I don't think he's that far. He's just out hooking up, he's not evil the way he was in No Tomorrow.
Ike | January 20, 2009 @ 1:02 pm
I agree with JD, the romantic Ted is still there, just dialed down some (see Naked Man). Plus he made sure this one liked Star Wars first.
Ike | January 20, 2009 @ 1:02 pm
Yes you are. But their love for another is so great not even the FAA can interfere, problem solved.
Ike | January 20, 2009 @ 1:10 pm
Carl's back! Ranjit's back! Wendy's MIA
Well 2 out 3 ain't bad. I loved this episode, and am pretty sure it's the best of the season. It has everything that makes this show legendary. We also got more Robin and Marshall, and Marshall's robot is killer. Robin is starting to show, but that's not hard when she was sickly thin in the fall. Barney's new Bingo will catch on, and that conversation was wonderful. The bar tending was amazing and realistic. I didn't cry, but Marshall is the man, and the chemistry between those two is amazing. The best part is it aired at the perfect time, it's snowing here in SC that doesn't happen very often.
natsirt | January 20, 2009 @ 3:41 pm
One of the best episdoes in years. The joke about Robin hitting on Marshall was pretty funny. I wonder how many takes it took to get the juggling and bottle flipping shots.
I didn't recognize Carl until he talked. He's lost weight and changed his hair. Carl being back was good, but still no Wendy. RANJIT ditched his fair for Lily. When HIMYM ends I want a spinoff with Carl, Wendy and Ranjit.
The BINGO ending was fantastic.
KJO | January 20, 2009 @ 3:50 pm
There was more snow here in Chicago than any December in recorded history, and on top of that it got down under -10F (-24C) last week!
I loved this ending. I thought it was gonna be a sad ending, and then they had the great entrance by Marshall. The cuts were perfect. Pam Fryman does it again! They can never let her go!
Ike | January 20, 2009 @ 4:27 pm
Just rewatched during my snow day. I got the final six pack reference. Aspen Yards Ale, Aspen Yard Sale. Great stuff.
High Hoper | January 20, 2009 @ 5:50 pm
Another mediocre episode. Except for few things, this was boring, the time-metaphor wasn't as clear and funny as others developed previously on the show, and I fear the show is going nowhere. Again, we need some mother info, is the leitmotiv of the show and it's disappearing. Also, tell me hell why a romantic guy who wants to find his soulmate, the ONE, the perfect woman for him, … hitting on college girls? Really? Not at all credible. We do not want the first-half-season3-ted, NO, we want the guy from the first season. That's what the show is all about, and not running a bar or hitting on college girls.
I really think that Season 4 has some of the best moments of the series so far, but definitely there has not been a season yet where I dislike so much episodes and things told in them. If they want to run a 7-year-show, they HAVE to change the plan. Really.
And people… best of the season? This? NO WAY. Shelter Island was probably the best episode this season 4 and, the way it is going, I fear it will be the best of the whole Season 4.
I used to love the show. Everything on it. But specially this season, I feel it's going nowhere.
High Hoper | January 20, 2009 @ 5:52 pm
What I meant in this:
I really think that Season 4 has some of the best moments of the series so far, but definitely there has not been a season yet where I dislike so much episodes and things told in them.
Is this:
I really think that Season 4 has some of the best moments of the series so far (shelter island, woo), but definitely there has not been a season yet where I dislike so much episodes and things told in them as this season 4.

Ted, what's in a gin and tonic? WHAT`S IN A GIN AND TONIC?!?!
This ep was totally aweeesomee!
JustinDickinson | January 20, 2009 @ 6:40 pm
You have to understand that the show is not written for the rabid fans who can follow the direct serialization. It's a comedy first off and the change we've seen this season is the show exploring a more traditional sitcom vibe within the confines of the world they've created. It gets old if Ted is the same as he was in the first season, or the second season. He's not actively looking for The One right now, he's just enjoying life, is he not allowed to do that? He's also not the same as he was in season three.
Hitting on girls he might not marry doesn't make him a monster, it makes him a real person.
natsirt | January 20, 2009 @ 7:15 pm
Many guys want to find their soulmate and still hit on hot college girls. You can both want a soulmate and want to get laid at the same time.
DaveR | January 20, 2009 @ 7:16 pm
Although he is a romatic, Ted is also still a guy.
DaveR | January 20, 2009 @ 7:17 pm
Ha! I kinda wondered the same thing. I'm gonna assume she checked them somehow.
DaveR | January 20, 2009 @ 7:21 pm
While I agree with the fact that this was not the best episode of the season, it was far better than mediocre.
DaveR | January 20, 2009 @ 7:26 pm
So much I loved about this episode. The first bit with the college girls was awesome. Especially Barney pulling Ted into the bar a third time, only to say "nice one".
As for your question about Robin and snow ploughs. Of course she would realize what a snow plough would do! I just took it to be that she was too distracted to care, or even hear what Marshall was saying at the time. But then, if Robin is from Vancouver, maybe she's not too familiar with snow ploughs. They get snow like, once a year there. Hmm .. I just realized I used a very Canadian spelling of the word 'plough'.
Also, as an aside, I totally saw two dudes rocking brunch this weekend.
Tyler | January 20, 2009 @ 7:50 pm
No I thought the same thing. You're only allowed to carry on a very minimal amount of fluid ounces onto a plane. Less than a regular sized bottle of shampoo I believe.
John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 8:14 pm
that's a bit stereotypical, dontcha think?
John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 8:16 pm
The original script seems to have used the liquids ban as the reason why she wasn't bringing beer this year. It's a shame they cut that explanation out, since I like it when they reference real life things (like the transit strike in Arrivederci, Fiero).
They also seem to have cut the explanation of where Robin got her car (it would have been borrowed from her friend Nicole)
John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 8:17 pm
I like how they put Robin in skimpy clothes when she's pregnant and showing. So close…
High Hoper | January 20, 2009 @ 8:26 pm
Maybe the thing is that I am like Ted in some ways like he was on Season 1. I am one of the pathetic fools who really want to find true love and that, and I really don't like hookups or hitting on girls just to do it.
I think nowadays I am more like Marshall and his Girl Inside LOL
AnnF | January 20, 2009 @ 8:48 pm
So, you mentioned Sloop John B at the beginning and I just had to load up the iTunes and play it while I read the review
It made me smile and it is pretty perfect. At some point, all the girls who sleep with Barney want to go home but that's probably because the sex visa has expired. Up Top!
Anyways, I really loved this episode too. I was kinda hoping Ted and Barney would have comment about the Robin lovin' but watching those two playing around in the bar made that excusable.
Loved the marching band playing "Auld Lang Syne" for Lily.
Loved Robin and Marshall's robot voice.
And BINGO! Classic Barney
Nikki | January 20, 2009 @ 8:53 pm
Kokomo =)
DaveR | January 20, 2009 @ 8:59 pm
Maybe a bit. Didn't mean it as such!
Ashley | January 20, 2009 @ 9:33 pm
Marshall "lawyering" Lily via telephone may be the funniest bit of television I've ever seen.
Not a classic episode, but on par with some stellar points. The end was a bit schmaltzy for me.
Elizabeth | January 20, 2009 @ 9:56 pm
I am so surprised no one has said anything about the obvious bartending scene being inspired by Cocktail with Tom Cruise. Such a great movie. SUCH a great scene.
Michelle | January 20, 2009 @ 10:09 pm
Are you kidding me? Sweaty tank top Robin was SO hot. Probably because it reminded me of that The L Word episode that Cobie did.
Kayla | January 20, 2009 @ 10:41 pm
I really liked this episode. It had a season 1 vibe which I sometimes miss
But the whole marching band thing was a little too cheesy for my taste. Good thing Barney's BINGO saved the ending
TheMix | January 20, 2009 @ 11:10 pm
Agreed. Just because you're looking for your true love doesn't mean those primal urges somehow get pushed back….
Ted's still looking for that girl, he's just trying to relieve some tension as it were in the process.
I will agree that we need to come back to the chorus of the show though. I love these episodes and I'm liking everything that's happening, but it's getting to be daunting. However, I sympathize with the writers in that they've created a show that has a premise that points to a single person's journey. We all know that the show isn't simply that, of course, but when you present a show called "How I Met Your Mother" it forces a sort of immediacy that other shows don't necessarily have.
TheMix | January 20, 2009 @ 11:13 pm
I'll disagree with that…
TERRIBLE movie
But a great reference, especially considering after having had a couple they just started dropping bottles and glasses all over the place.
TheMix | January 20, 2009 @ 11:28 pm
"What’s up with Ted’s unevenly striped sweater in the beginning and Marshall swirling his white wine?"
The white wine I took as a reference to Marshall and Lily needing to grow-up. I was taken aback by it at first, and then I knew it had to be deliberate, because unless there is absolutely NOTHING left to drink…..no Minnesotan male ever drinks white wine. Let alone drinking white wine at a BAR!!!
I had listened to Pet Sounds the day before yesterday, so that was a pleasant surprise.
I'm peaked with anticipation concerning how Robin is going to play this game to fruition. She doesn't even know she's IN the game, but she's making it that much more interesting. The vulnerability she's been showing has been intensely wonderful to watch, but makes me question where she'll end up. Barney's obviously going to step-up if he's gonna make a play. And Ted's still off in never-neverland but "Benefits" kind of left a little ambiguity to play around with. It's just fun to watch a character go through these massive life alterations like Robin is seemingly pushing through right now. It doesn't happen all that much on TV because writers get so scared that if they don't stick to the character-sketch that they've been building for the last however many years, that people will simply abandon the character. It takes some serious juevos to do, so kudos to C&C TV Factory.
I hope they keep pushing the changes but it'll be interesting to see if she reverts back to old Robin in regards to matters of the heart. I think she'll obviously stay supremely Canadian in the more outward and common character traits though.
-Jason
P.S. – Additional kudos go to wardrobe for the Twins jersey Marshall wore.

John Darc | January 20, 2009 @ 8:53 pm
Damn, that Powers of Ten-esque shot was pretty cool.
edit: And yes, the snowing here in NYC is oddly appropriate. And is it just me, or is Robin getting dumber/made the butt of jokes more? She thinks an intercom is a thermostat and she doesn't realize the plow snowed her in. Plus, she slept with the Naked Man.
Amy | January 21, 2009 @ 12:54 am
but marshall and lily are totally cheesy so its perfect

Has anyone else noticed Robins clothing style transitions. She was laid back first season and most of second season. A hippie the beg. of 3rd. Then really dressy/fancy always with perfect hair and sexy outfits end of third and beg of 4. Now she is back to casual and straight hair.
I'm so glad Carl is back.
I loved this ep because I love Marshall and Lily so much. Their cheesy coupleness always makes me happy.

I rock brunch with bros all the time. That shit is common in NYC. Sometimes there's a female buffer though, but it's not required.
Emmy | January 21, 2009 @ 2:37 am
This was easily my favorite episode of the season–it seemed boring at the start, but then slowly ramped up into awesomeness like HIMYM so often does and showcased everything that I love about the show.
One note about the post, though: as a 21-year old college girl, I assure it IS realistic that a girl that young and in college would make an Empire Strikes Back reference. A lot of girls see Star Wars for the first time in college at the request of boyfriends and such. Plus, she's in MARCHING BAND.
Daeran | January 21, 2009 @ 3:46 am
This is one of my favorite episodes. I have to say that the content and timing of this episode was absolutely perfect.
BGeo | January 21, 2009 @ 1:28 am
ahhh another awesome episode. It had that season 1 feeling to it which hooked us all on this show. Some one said it earlier that the reason Ted is chasing a girl 9 years younger than him fits his current situation of getting his feet back on the ground.
Glad to see Ranjit and Carl back (hardly recognized him at first) Ranjit's Too Many Informations killed me.
I really like Marshall and Lily episodes and liked how they told the story in reverse in some parts. I felt Marshall drinking wine was supposed to show him maturing, however it startled me, seeing him with a beer.
Great episode. Keep them coming!
p.s. Happy Belated Birthday to Jason Segel. Can't wait for I love you, man!

Maybe it isn't "sweat". If it's a lady.
It's mansweat that isn't hot. Ball sweat.

Hippy Hippy Shake.
According to the internet, that is. I'm a little too young for that film to hold any resonance with me. Being that I'm pretty sure I wasn't born yet, and all.
caL | January 21, 2009 @ 8:18 am
This episode is the COOLEST ever. I mean, Barney and Ted bartending? A FULL band?! Ranjit and Carl back?!! Wohoo! For the 2nd time watching HIMYM my jaw dropped at the ending… first time was Barney and Robin kissing. Ha. Loved the white wine bit, I bet Marshall learnt it in Cosmo girl =D
Loved the episode.
Vapor023 | January 21, 2009 @ 10:18 am
I think its important for the show to have a few episodes that don't necessarily move us closer to the mother. It is still at its core a sitcom, unlike Lost or 24. The fact that they're going into syndication means that the show needs to be watchable for the occasional viewer that flips by Lifetime channel after getting home from work.
Secondly, life meanders. You fall in love, you fall out of love, you go into party mode, you become a hermit, you become a work-a-holic. And when you recount your stories from last year, or from your college/HS days, you get into tangents of meaningless but funny experiences. Thats life.

I agree completely. The whole "HIMYM" concept only really lends itself to a couple of seasons, but given its current ratings it looks like it'll go for at least six (barring a precipitous ratings drop next year, I guess), and to make the concept last that long the writers will have to be careful. I personally don't care about who the mother is, but I know that a lot of people do, and up till this year the show had a wonderful flow to it:
Robin –> Tattoo Girl/Mandy Moore –> Stella
And now that Ted and Stella have severed ties completely it's hard to see where they'll go next. I completely agree that this season feels like it's going nowhere, and my theory is that it's because it doesn't have an overarching theme so far. S1 was about Ted's unrequited love for Robin, S2 was their relationship, S3 was about Ted getting over Robin and dealing with just being friends with her. So far the first third or so of S4 dealt with Stella, but the next third has been quite patchy- you'd expect it to deal with him trying to move on, but Ted moved on really, really fast and ever since 4.06 I completely agree that the show has been directionless.
I know that Bays and Thomas decided to go about this season differently– with more standalones, less serialised plots, etc– but it still needs an overall theme to tie them together. Rewatching all 4 seasons to date will be really strange once one hits the post-Shelter Island episodes.
clearwater | January 21, 2009 @ 12:23 pm
I agree with pretty much everything you say, but here's my question: did people really find things in this show (pre-S4) so hard to follow? I watched the pilot, then only watched the show sporadically till season 3, but I never found the episodes I managed to catch hard to understand. The serialised aspect isn't really that complex seeing as SagetTed gives us a little exposition anyway.
Whenever my friends talk about not liking this show, they don't talk about how the storylines are complicated– most people just hate the laugh track (and so do I, when I notice it), which doesn't appeal to as many viewers in the post-Friends era.
clearwater | January 21, 2009 @ 12:24 pm
The thermostat/intercom thing was stupid, but I think that when she was arguing with Marshall she was just on a rant and wasn't listening to his repeated warnings about the snow plow. She seemed genuinely shocked/freaked out when it went by.
clearwater | January 21, 2009 @ 12:35 pm
I think the clothing changes are really just about the HIMYM wardrobe dept having a bigger budget. When you rewatch season 1 both Lily and Robin wear pretty casual, everyday stuff that most people would wear. It was only in mid-S2 to season 3 that they started wearing really pretty clothes (Lily in particular– which they explained with the credit card debt thing, thankfully). Lately I think Robin's been wearing more casual stuff just because she has a job– although I know I madly heart that brown leather (?) jacket she's been wearing all season.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 4:09 pm
one of the many questions that popped in my mind, exactly. "WTF did Robin get the car?"
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 4:11 pm
Yeah, same here, he is very different from when we last saw him.
And that Bingo is just one more to had to the huge list of awesome last lines this series has.
JustinDickinson | January 21, 2009 @ 4:12 pm
Good question actually. Maybe Marshall got a car to replace the Fiero? Maybe it was a rental? Why would she be driving? That never occurred to me.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 4:16 pm
She was genuinely pissed at him she just wasn't listening to him.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 4:52 pm
Cobbie/Robin, even all sweaty, she's hot. It may not be pretty but hot, just the same.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 5:09 pm
Great episode for all the characters but i was left with a feeling that i had missed HIMYM for a week or two. Why? Last week we have Barney going nuts because Ted is jamming on Sherbatsky (ROFL with that one) wich leads to Teds realisation that Barney is in love with her and ends the whole "friends with benefits" situation. After that, would Ted just let that go and start chasing after chicks with him? Or would he try and do as Lilly did in 4×01 and change his ways and get Barney to admit his feelings? I just thisnk there should be at least an episode dealing with the fallout from "Benefits".
Otherwise i liked the whole fact that we spend the most part of the episode thinking all is happening at the same time only to have that awesome twist in that each story was actually taking place in three different days. Legendary.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 5:09 pm
Barney's Bingo and his awkward explanation of how it works… the blank sideways stare he gives us at the end… ROFL… and the callback in the end… "Bingo!"
BTW, wouldn't Robin snap at Ted for having a party at the appartment and not asking her?
Robin and Marshall in the car was great. Marshall's robot was better but Robin's expression as she delivers her lines beats it. And the part with the snow-plow…" What the hell just happened?" indeed.
"Wait. Does this mean i have to bring a marching band with me everytime i…?"
"Yes, you duntz!!"
He's so screwed.
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 5:14 pm
Final note:
Whats the weird way they keep saying the word "mature". Did Ted's pretensious way of saying certain words rub off on Lilly and Marshal? LOL
macdawson | January 21, 2009 @ 5:15 pm
Sorry. i meant to say "what's WITH the weird way they keep saying the word "mature"?"
JustinDickinson | January 21, 2009 @ 6:36 pm
I haven't read the bro code but I live it day to day so I know a bro wouldn't pry into another bro's love for a friend, at least not right away. Ted knows, but if he brings it up it'll be later and not as directly as Lily.

Actually, I think that Marshall is swirling his glass of wine because of what he was saying at that moment (that Lily and Marshall are now a mature couple) just like in S1 "Okay Awesome" Lily was describing wine testing as their way to become a mature married couple. And the fact that he drinks a glass of wine – when we usually see him drink a pint of beer – and overdo the swirling thing – reminds so much of Okay Awesome.
Btw I loved the way he jumped by the window at that time just like I adooore the "she totally hit on me" in this episode.

Thank you so much for appreciating it
I think the same as you, specially the chain Robin -> Tattoo -> Stella.
They have broken the chain of scr… err… the pyramid… er… well, they broke the thing. Something had to happen after Stella that hadn't. So, miss link. Whoever is his next girlfriend (and I have read spoilers about it) it is not what it should have come next.

wooo carl is back!
John Darc | January 22, 2009 @ 1:13 am
It's simply a meal that two male friends have on a Sunday afternoon. Nothing wrong with that, just like it didn't get weird with Brad and Marshall until he invited him to the wedding/B and B and tried to get him flowers.
John Darc | January 22, 2009 @ 1:19 am
Remember Zip, Zip, Zip – A bro doesn't tell a mutual bro that a third bro has a crush on him.
Also, you've got to assume there's an episode out of place here. It just seems like Benefits should have aired later.

If it's Marshall's car, why is Robin driving it? Why would they rent a car when they spend their time in taxis? All seems to indicate that its Robin's but from the gangs reaction when Ted bought his car i wouldn't expect any of them to have one. Maybe it is a lowner an John Darc said but again, why ask for a borrowed car when they use taxis all the time? Are the taxis stoped because of the snow? But wouldn't any snow storm big enough to stop taxis stop traffic entirely? God, this is like a Moebius strip…

i just ran by the whole book and that particular rule is not in there. at least not in the main 150 articles. I'll have to check the exceptions, amendments and side notes though. There's really a lot of stuff in there. But still that would reffer to Ted not telling Robin about Barney's feelings, Ted can talk Barney about it, although i believe he'll give it some time.
And yes, this episode seems to be out of order. Little Minnesota was around Xmas time and this one seems to be just after New Years Eve or, as the guy that sell's Lilly the beer states, its still January. Benefits happens in "the winter of 2009" according to future Ted. I can't recall any other reference as to wich time it is.
macdawson | January 22, 2009 @ 12:58 pm
I usually take these continuity glitches as future Ted's fault. Just like any person telling a really, reeeeeally long story, he will go back to tell some detail he forgot, i mean, this is the base that allow the stories to be told as in this episode, going back and forth. But with key events as the ones at the end of Benefits, it feels strange. But i'm sure sooner or latter, they will deal with that. Awesome idea? Having that story unfold in the "Goat" episode. Is anyone else as curious as i am about that particular event?

"Love the ‘dibs’ after Star Wars reference (which, btw, no girl that young and in college would say) "
- I beg to differ. I'm 20, in college, and make Star Wars references often. I've made the Hoth reference so many times that now my friends who used to have no idea what Hoth is understand the reference.
JustinDickinson | January 22, 2009 @ 7:03 pm
Again I say, I don't doubt you make the reference around your friends but you wouldn't make it to the older dudes you were meeting up with at a bar.
saya | January 22, 2009 @ 9:16 pm
uuum, i would. if the older dude was way hot and i knew it would work. girls can pull out the Barney when they need to!
Kelly G | January 22, 2009 @ 9:20 pm
Honestly. I don't have "moves" to pick up guys. I just say whatever comes to mind. So if I thought it was Hoth-cold out I'd probably just say so.
JustinDickinson | January 22, 2009 @ 9:44 pm
You say you would, but you wouldn't. Be honest.
saya | January 22, 2009 @ 9:53 pm
I really hate it when people say "be honest." It just means that any response would read as defensive (lying) or as a lie. Think about it– what would I have to gain by lying in the comments for a blog on a t.v. show?
JustinDickinson | January 22, 2009 @ 11:50 pm
I'm not saying you're lying. I just think, in the moment, a girl wouldn't make that comment, even if she thought she would.

Alas, I have finally seen "Benefits" and "Three days of snow", and I have to admit, I loved boths episodes to bits. But, as this is the "Three days of snow" recap, I will concentrate in this episode.
And honestly, together with "Wooo" and "Benefits", this is one of the best episodes this season. I would ven go as far as saying, that it is one of the best episodes of the entire show. Yes, it was corny and I cried at the end but oh, how wonderful it was at the same time. The comedy, the twist in the end and of course Carl and Ranjit (especially Ranjit!). It was all perfect. I also like the fact, that Robin and Marshall don´t have this super smoothly friendship and that he is the one who tells her things the others never would dare to say (even if he apologizes in the end). But yeah, coming from "the cold country of Canada" Robin should have known about the snow plough. That´s the only thing that bugged me a little.
Apart from that: The episode was absolutely awsome!
Jose Picelli | January 24, 2009 @ 5:37 pm
Nice review, Nice episode. But I really miss the old HIMYM. It`s funny but where are the mother references?
BTW, Robin FTW =P
Andy O'Kriss | January 24, 2009 @ 7:54 pm
Haha, I just resaw the episode. The clips where you the dumb five word sentences … I can't wait to see Marshall NOT jumping that far! (Quote/Marshall: "I can jump that far!")
billqs | January 29, 2009 @ 10:32 pm
Back when I was looking for the "ONE" I often ended up with the "one right now," who more times than not was a college chick. It might be somewhat contradictory but it really is how a single guy of Ted's age thinks. You have the ideal and you have the right now. Lots to be said for both but you still work on finding the one.
billqs | January 29, 2009 @ 10:37 pm
Well there is an arc this year… it's Robin/Barney. What's cool is going back to season 1 and seeing the sparks they had even then when Robin "suited up" for Barney while Ted was busy with Victoria. When Barney explained the reasons he and Robin should hook up, she paused and stated "Everything you said makes a lot of sense." I think they may planned this Barney/Robin arc from sometime early on for cues to be there the first season.
From where I'm sitting, I'm enjoying the Season 4 eps as much I enjoy the Season 1 eps I'm watching the rest of the week.
JustinDickinson | January 29, 2009 @ 10:38 pm
Well said. I too think it's very realistic for Ted to have the occasional ONS. He is living in NYC afterall, you're practically tripping over beautiful girls here. And I don't know what guy says “no thank you” to a beautiful girl all the time.
