Season 4, Episode 21: The Three Days Rule Discussion

I could sit down and write a recap that talked about how casually, and at the same time deftly, the writers work modern technology and culture into their humor, how it keeps the jokes fresh and the show as a whole agile and new. I could talk about the faceted story line that dealt with desire, empathy, pathos, cruelty, and bro-love. I could go on and on about how watching NPH and Jason Segel read off the NFL draft order would be funnier then anything Two and a Half Men could churn out.
Or…
I could tell the story of why tonight’s episode is special to me, and why I cannot review it unbiasedly. Yeah, that’s better.
Around Thanksgiving my friend Paul told me the story of a prank he’d pulled on his brother that involved impersonating a female via text messages. I thought this was funny, and fit the tone of the show. I then off handedly mentioned the idea to Carter Bays. He said it was indeed funny, and maybe they’d work it into the show somewhere. I thought it was cool enough he liked it and left it at that. The other day I got a note telling me to pay attention to tonight’s episode, that it might seem a little familiar. So I went over to Paul’s house and watched what started as a bar story and a one line email turn into one of the funniest episodes of the season. Those writers are good at what they do.
What Was Good
First, I should welcome new readers. I’m not sure where you guys came from but my subscriber count has shot up. Thanks for stopping by, and please comment. If you’re reading this in RSS or email you won’t get the full effect. I’m just the janitor here, the real talent is in the comments. Ok, and we’re back in.
Neil Patrick Harris. His speech about Jesus was amazing. I think I said it last week and I’ll say it again: NPH has a way with monologues. The voices he does, the gestures, I’m spellbound the entire time, waiting to laugh till the end so I don’t miss anything. I wonder how many takes he needs on average to get those right. A small detail about the show that I love: watch Robin’s giggle at the end of his speech. That’s a real laugh. Nice to leave that in.
Jason Segel. Maybe it’s the press videos I’ve been watching but I’m starting to believe this guy is just the coolest person alive. He also has the bro-mance/awkward man love comedy market cornered. Keep it up.
Cobie Smulders. She pulls off something that is truly rare: being sexy and funny. It’s not often that this duplicity is achieved by actresses. You laugh along with her jokes as one of the guys, but then you wish you were on the receiving end of the bathrobe flash. Smulders also deserves props for taking over Lily’s job of being the moral police for Barney and Marshall. She did get the guy in the end so at least she was rewarded for her hard work.
What Was Bad
I miss Lily.
Favorite Moments

- “Maybe not a sick dad. Or a very sick dad, am I right?” Robin’s bad jokes are awesome
- I love when Robin yells at them “you sons of bitches”
- Love the callbacks. Especially the red cowboy boots
- When Barney and Marshall get all into the girl’s side of the sexting and then realize what they’re doing.
- It’s cute that Robin sees herself as a special case that made Ted fall in love.
- “He clearly doesn’t know what LOL means.”
- Stan is awesome. So is the man-crush Barney and Marshall have on him. Where’d that guy come from? Totally random and strange. He’s like Marsellus Wallace’s poet brother. Although the Pablo Neruda throwback was nice. “I don’t know what bread was doing in there but that touched me.” It is pretty hot poetry.
- It’s nice that they made the joke about Barney and Marshall feeling rejected, nicer that they didn’t over sell the joke.
- “Marsha and Billy, no one sprained any muscles there.”
- The montage of Barney and Marshall replacing Holli in each scenario is genius. “Yeah, I don’t think they actually did those things, they were just at the bar.”
- How Robin is it to keep insisting her idea is the best? Especially since Ted’s were all better. Even that is a call back to Ted writing speeches.
- I love Barney and Marshall arguing over who Ted would have gay dreams about. I wonder if Ted knew that argument would be part of the funny.
- “Here’s the thing Barney, I’m snuggly, you’re not. Who wouldn’t want to snuggle up to this business on a Sunday morning? Wrapped up in a comforter and it’s raining outside and there’s muffins warming in the over…I’m cuddly bitch, deal with it.”
- I love Ted’s architect dream. He’s such a nerd. “Buddy, tonight your name is I.M. Paying”
Closing
As I sat and watched tonight’s episode with Paul—the first time I’d watched an episode straight through, with another person, in some time—I realized something. The writers have built a world with characters and callbacks and dimensions that I could watch for years. That isn’t to say Paul didn’t enjoy it, he did. It’s like when you’re invited to dinner with people you’ve just met. You have fun, and you laugh, but it’s clear there’s history here that you aren’t familiar with, a history with depth you can’t match. So it is with the show. We’ve been with these people for a long time. We notice subtle nuances of their speech. We know their tells, their imperceptible gestures and idiosyncrasies. We get the call backs whether or not they’re explained.

We’ve been here long enough too to watch characters grow and change. When we first met Ted his head was in the clouds. He was on the trail of true love and we watched him succeed and fail and, in the process, grow. Highs were celebrated—go watch the season one finale and I promise you’ll still get butterflies—and lows were weathered. It’s in the recovery of these lows that has held Ted back for the latter half of this season. Tonight we see Ted come full circle. Gone is the naive romantic, gone is the careless outlaw, and gone most of all is the timid man too afraid to put himself out there after being left at the altar. He’s at once comfortable with his own quirks yet still learning lessons. He was freaked out by Holli’s over eagerness but makes no apologies for the sleeve on which he still wears his heart.
Mother Alert

Allow me to stir the rumor pot. I think Holli has a good chance of being the mom. The reference at the end is suggestive, and could prove to pay off later. Think about it, if he never saw her again why wouldn’t he have told everyone the real story of what happened on that first date? I know what you’re thinking, she freaked Ted out with how strong she came on. You’re probably right. A first date that went that poorly would never workout. It’s not like Ted has ever done that, and even if he had, it’d have ended immediately. It wouldn’t have drawn on for the next two years, creating a relationship loved by those involved and by the millions watching from home. Never mind, I’m way off.

The recap is on time this week y'all. I'd also like to give Kings of Leon a shout out. I feel like their music helped bring out some ideas in the closing that I might not have expressed so well otherwise.
TheMix | April 28, 2009 @ 6:10 am
This is one of the best Recaps you've ever written Justin. For serious. I'm sure it has at least a little something to do with the personal backstory behind it, but it was a great episode and a great recap.
JustinDickinson | April 28, 2009 @ 6:15 am
Thanks man. From you that really means a lot. (Readers, this man can write.)
SSJ | April 28, 2009 @ 6:53 am
Wow, that was wast, JD
. I haven't watched episode yet!
I'be back in 20, after 4×21
.
Herbert | April 28, 2009 @ 7:36 am
Hey, yea thats was a really good recap! Probably the best recap i've read so far! I noticed at the end of the episode that there wasnt much told about BRo situation. Even though through out the whole episode Barney n Robin always sit next to each other at the booth, this goes back to the other episode where Marshall tells Barney that Lilly and him sit on the opposite side of the booth so Barney n Robin sit next too each other. Also at the end I noticed Barney wasn't cut about Robin going on a date with Stan. The Montage was pretty good, pretty creepy with the cuddling part. But in the end it was awesome.
Major Buzzkill | April 28, 2009 @ 7:47 am
JD man, first of all props on getting the recap up at breakneck speed. You rock.
Secondly, and more importantly, thanks for inspiring one of the funniest episodes of the season! I mean just in the straight up *funny* kind of way, you know? But you are completely correct when you point out that the writers make it so funny because we *know* the characters. We know that Barney and Marshall are in an eternal battle over who's the Best Friend, and they played on that in an unexpected and awesome way. We know EXACTLY what Barney is getting at when he says the thing about red and cowboys, even before we actually see Ted pulling off the GCWOK boots… just so many wonderful things.
I love your analysis of Ted's progression, too. There's a lot we could say for the progression of the other characters, too, but I feel like Ted kind of gets lost in that shuffle sometimes. I appreciate what the show's doing with Ted here at the end of this season, and it makes me more interested in him than in a long while.
And it is really sad when the idea of NPH and Segel reading the draft order actually sounds exciting. But maybe that's because I accidentally saw a Two and a Half Men promo tonight (I try hard to avert my eyes usually) and I think I threw up in my mouth a little.
But truly, truly, truly… I miss the hell out of Lily.
SSJ | April 28, 2009 @ 9:54 am
Haha, great episode and your recap is even greater
.
There was one thing I didn't like however – it was first episode without Lily (hopefully the last). I miss Alyson :/.
Herbert | April 28, 2009 @ 9:57 am
I agree, i do miss Alyson. However, she might be away due to her pregnancy
SSJ | April 28, 2009 @ 11:18 am
Yeah, I know that it is due to her pregnancy, but still :/.
Did you notice that Cobie's belly became much larger than in earlier episodes? Even through big bags it was clearly visible… And of course I know it is impossible to cover something like that but, i don't know, maybe Alyson's belly wasn't as big as Cobie's?
Dex | April 28, 2009 @ 11:23 am
Watching Segal and Smulders during the Jesus speech (pure genius!) I have to think it took many takes to get it. You can tell the laughs they're having are geniune.
Ike | April 28, 2009 @ 11:28 am
Nothing like a recap to read when I get into work. Thanks JD for inspiring a very funny plot.
Funniest episode of season 4.
This had me laughing straight away and I didn't stop until I caught the beginning of 2.5 men. NPH delivered again and you're right about how great he is with those. I do love how they leave the real laughs in the scenes.
Ted using 'texty text' wow he's rusty. Ted's naked lady laugh is classic and man I wish I had roomie like Robin.
I really liked Ted picturing Marshall and Barney doing all those things that was funny. And it's always funny to see them fight over who is Ted's best friend. Oh and red cowboy boots! And it's nice to see Ted back on his feet but being classic Ted and not outlaw Ted.
For some reason I feel like Robin was more than just selling her payback joke. It feels more like she was trying to tell them she only has 3 months to live. It just seems like how Robin would do that, no? I miss Lily.
JD you're right. This show hits hardest when you've seen all previous episodes because the writers have managed to make realistic characters that we all would love to hang with and us diehards do start to notice every little thing.
PS: Holli the mother=doubt it. Potential long arc as steady gf yeah I can see that.
John Darc | April 28, 2009 @ 11:43 am
Near the end, you sort of get the feeling that NPH was just improvising.
John Darc | April 28, 2009 @ 11:47 am
The cowboy boots. The only part of Everything Must Go worth saving. I took the boots, and left the rest of Everything Must Go, the plot, in the trash where it belongs!
I actually don't think I remember much about that episode. Britney's return, gay jokes, Larry Wilmore being the only decent laugh, Lily being that weird righteous selfish Lily again, two legit websites, and the "pulling off" of the boots.
Anyone else think it was a little weird to flash back to the pilot? Do you think it was for the new viewers? I think we're all aware of the premature e-Ted-ulation, and it could have been mentioned off hand with most of us getting it. I dug this episode though. I'm still doing the naked lady laugh.
John Darc | April 28, 2009 @ 1:14 pm
I just heard someplace else that The Three Days Rule is played out in the Bro Code. The new proposal? The Four Days Rule, cause girls are expecting the Three Days Rule and this really confuses them.
JustinDickinson | April 28, 2009 @ 1:16 pm
Maybe the flash back was to show new viewers that Robin hasn't always been preggers.
ChrisL | April 28, 2009 @ 1:32 pm
I love when Barney is telling Robin and Marshall about the look in Ted's eye. The crazy I'm-about-to-move-too-fast-and-screw-this-up look. He absolutely NAILS the look on Ted's face in the pilot during the freeze-frame after he says "smurf-penis"!
Paupi | April 28, 2009 @ 1:48 pm
Great episode and great recap !
I loved Barney's Jesus monologue…and the other's reactions, it was absolutely awesome !
And you inspired a really funny plot !
Amanda | April 28, 2009 @ 2:04 pm
I don't think this was THE funniest episode of the season (can anything beat the Naked Man, come on, really?), but it was definitely up there. They managed to turn a story line that has been used in sitcoms before that came out just OK into something truly HIMYMtastic. I do have to say I don't think I'm buying into Holli being the mom. Ted not telling anyone how the date went I took as him not wanting to hear "I told you so" (perhaps a reference to crazy-hot scale? probably not, but worth a shot). But if they DID make Holli the mother, that would be a definite curveball. Are we supposed to meet the mother this season still?
Cobie is definitely starting to look preggers, when's she due?
Herbert | April 28, 2009 @ 2:10 pm
I just noticed through out the episode, Barney n Marshall both realise that they are trying to have sex with ted. Also i actually did this to a mate of mine back during, school. I had a new phone number… n realised my mate didnt have it. So yea… it lasted for 3 months… he eventually called n i answered… he hated for a few weeks… he kinda invited me to our semi-formal
AnnF | April 28, 2009 @ 2:21 pm
That's really cool that your story had an influence on Bays and Thomas
It was an awesome episode
Danielle | April 28, 2009 @ 2:30 pm
I loved this episode but I did miss Lily.
Since she is my favorite it is very hard to not see her.
I do not think Holli is the mother. The reason I do not think she is the mother because Old Ted told the kids, when I could you mothers number I did not wait, I called her right away. We know he did not call Holli right away..he texty text her or who he thought was her. He actually found her at her work. So if they make her the mother that does not work.
Ike | April 28, 2009 @ 3:08 pm
Haha good one. I think that moment will always be special and they could replay it every week. That's the moment we all fell for Robin.
Ike | April 28, 2009 @ 3:09 pm
Very good point.
Jeff | April 28, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
Great episode. I laughed from beginning to end. I have to say, I agree with most of the comments here, so I'll refrain from going into more detail, with two exceptions:
-First, re: Lilly. I didn't miss, or even think about her absence. That's not to say that I don't think she isn't an important element to the show (after all, if Ted doesn't split with Holli himself, she'll likely have to be involved!), but I think she wasn't necessary for this episode to work, esp. since it gave more time to focus on Barney & Marshall's friendship, which was taken to hilarious levels tonight.
-Secondly, I'm fairly certain that Ted's monologue at the end makes it virtually clear that Holli is not their mother, as per the fact that Ted did not call her right away. I also missed the Trudy reference, unless it was Barney throwing it in the list of girl names that end in "y".
Nonetheless, definitely an episode worth re-watching.
John Darc | April 28, 2009 @ 12:04 pm
Also, anyone else think Segel was about to break during his little argument? It reminded me of the gag reel from Season 2 when he's ranting about all the Lily Aldrin's he's spoken to in the SF area alone.
edit: And Ted saw Lily naked. I guess what goes around comes around (Dowisetrepla, anyone?). You'd think after a decade, they'd work out some sort of knocking system.
Amy | April 28, 2009 @ 4:56 pm
Names that end in LY
DaveR | April 28, 2009 @ 4:57 pm
That's exactly what I thought too. Cobie had the same sort of giggle that I've seen on the DVDs in outtakes. I thought the Jesus speech was great, and glad they were able to keep it in the episode!
sydb | April 28, 2009 @ 5:49 pm
i am really looking forward the bloopers from this episode, i wish there was a behind the scenes with this one. there were so many great moments between them, specially those between marshall-barney.
BGeo | April 28, 2009 @ 3:18 pm
First off congrats to JD (and Paul) for becoming part of popular culture. I truly envy your relationship with Carter Bays. Also I think a congratulations to the site is due, for not only attracting new readers, but on the extremely strong write up this week. Good Job.
I felt this episode was up there with The Naked Man for humor, this season. It had everything. NPH and Jason Segel both put in strong arguments as to why I believe they are amongst the funniest men on the planet.
Loved the call backs, and how Barney and Marshall manipulated Ted into wearing the Red Cowboy boots.
I will have to question Holli being the Mother, however earlier the name Trudy was brought up again. As much as this is unlikely, it would give the writters to possibly touch on where the Pinnapple came from, which I know they regret not playing out.
All in all terriffic episode
arabella | April 28, 2009 @ 7:24 pm
I'm cuddly bitch! that was hilarious
Major Buzzkill | April 28, 2009 @ 7:35 pm
You can never really tell with him, can you? I love that he clearly cracks the cast up as much as he does us.
Major Buzzkill | April 28, 2009 @ 7:38 pm
I agree the flashback to the pilot felt weird. They are usually good at subtly letting newer viewers know the backstory. But this felt like they were jamming it down our throats. And then Robin made the slightly jealous-seeming comment about Holli's conditioner (which was hilarious)… it kind of made me suspicious that they might be setting something up for the last episodes.
Major Buzzkill | April 28, 2009 @ 7:41 pm
Oh yeah, question… am I the only one who noticed that the dirty text Marshall sent Lily about the takeout and her doing him on the couch was sent from *Barney's* phone? I sure hope she knew that was Marshall..
JustinDickinson | April 28, 2009 @ 7:46 pm
Haha, good point.
High Hoper | April 28, 2009 @ 7:59 pm
Not all the good I hoped, but really a strong good episode. I miss Lily, btw.
I don't think this holly is the mother. Also I have the mentioned before spoiler on my theory about mom's identity.
Barney is GOD. Well, NPH is GOD. If I were to have a gay affair, it would be him LOL (Yes, I know what LOL means). Really, that man is perfect for the job. You really like him talking. His gests, his ways to look, to explain and convince of what he's saying is definitely the best. If this show would have to survive on one character, it would be him. I cannot think of another actor doing better than NPH for the role.
Great recap by the way!
High Hoper | April 28, 2009 @ 8:00 pm
I watched yesterday The Naked Man… wow, funniest episode of this season! It has everything. 2nd best episode for me of this season (1st is Shelter Island)
John Darc | April 28, 2009 @ 9:25 pm
What I did appreciate is that there was no cheesy laugh for the flashback. It was sort of "there", and then there was no weird pause. Robin was just straight into her thing about how she was a special case, and then throwing up a feeble high five (first time?)
Adam A | April 28, 2009 @ 9:55 pm
dude, your'e actually a really good writer.
JustinDickinson | April 28, 2009 @ 10:48 pm
Thank you. I appreciate it.

I`m Chilean and every Neruda reference for me is a joy, this is the second so far in this season! I freaking love this show!
OhEmGee | April 28, 2009 @ 11:16 pm
This episode was hilarious! One of the best out of season four, in my opinion. =]
And there was a reference to the mother! We haven't seen one of those in a while.
I totally agree with your recap-the closing was amazing and Barney's Jesus speech was the best. Kings of Leon is a good band, too-perfect for this show. =]
KJO | April 28, 2009 @ 11:48 pm
Holli = 0% of being the mother
Has Lily ever not appeared in an entire episode before?
Amy | April 29, 2009 @ 2:33 am
No, but she has had two small eps. Season 2 ep 1 where she is only in the end. And last ep where she was only in the beg.
Leigh | April 29, 2009 @ 2:55 am
I'm not sure why everyone thinks that Holli might be the mother. Ted didn't tell anyone the story – not because she's the mother, but because he saw how crazy he can seem, and didn't want to admit to anyone that he moves too fast.
I thought it was a great episode, but by no means the funniest of the season. Above commentors are right – Naked Man!
I can't WAIT for the rest of the season!
Major Buzzkill | April 29, 2009 @ 3:21 am
Ok, true, Naked Man is probably funnier. And I gotta be honest, it has the whole… nearly naked NPH thing going for it.
I'm fond of almost all the episodes in this season, though. I know some people don't like it, but honestly it might be my favourite.
Geri | April 29, 2009 @ 6:39 am
"Jason Segel. Maybe it’s the press videos I’ve been watching but I’m starting to believe this guy is just the coolest person alive." Told you
And I'd also like to thank Kings Of Leon for being the one band that's gotten me to believe there is still a minuscule chance there are amazing bands out there.
JustinDickinson | April 29, 2009 @ 6:42 am
There are plenty of amazing bands still out there.
Amanda | April 29, 2009 @ 1:48 pm
Did anyone catch NPH hosting the TV Land awards? He was great and the opening bit he did had some HIMYM callbacks. NPH in the '60s bit had him saying something along the lines of "Legen- wait for it- is this Wisconsin cheddar because this cheese is good- dary!" then his "mother" told him to suit up.
This man truly is a fantastic actor.
Westfall | April 29, 2009 @ 4:34 pm
Awesome episode.NPH delivery of the Jesus monologue was briliant, the whole Barney and Marshal acting all girly was ROFL and Robin… well, any girl that opens her robe and shows a guy her naked, sexy body, just to prove a point is worthy of respect.
And Lilly's disapearing act continues. LOL. Top notch episode and among the best, if not the best, HIMYM episode ever.
On a side note, those of you who haven't watched NPH in Dr. Horrible's SAB… DO SO. That is one awesome piece of work. NPH + Joss Whedon = AWESOMENESS.

GoForBarney | April 29, 2009 @ 9:17 pm
JD, I know what you mean about watching it with someone. I was introduced to the show by watching a few episodes on a friend's computer with him, and that's how I introduced it to a good friend of mine, and she and I watch every new episode together. We make jokes relating to the show, understand all the callbacks, and just share the experience. It's become almost sacred to us. It's our thing.
Say what you want about living in a material world, but this show does what it does because everyone behind it (writers, actors, etc.) are top notch, and they deserve the props.

Regarding the Barney/Marshall text confusion. Marshall was the person sending texts the whole time, although he didn't identify himself at all through the text. They might save it in the next or a later episode. =P
Major Buzzkill | April 30, 2009 @ 5:11 am
I'm assuming the writers just didn't really think of it being Barney's phone, but I'm still imagining a really confused Lily on the other end
SSJ | April 30, 2009 @ 9:46 am
Nope, it was first episode without Lily. Actually it was first episode which didn't include all 5 main cast members…
chinese_hinym_fan | April 30, 2009 @ 10:34 am
i m not sure i like this episode like earlier ones, but you got to give them some credit for come up with a sitcom without almost the whole female cast .also, cobie‘s belly,no offense, is a liability of the show now, not a single actress can act behind her bag and/or bar table with a loose shirt. base on the condition of pregnancy, she did a good job. the writer, on the other hand, need to give robin more joke. i think she is losing everybody attention.
i rather consider now as a big turning point for the producers. if they can weather thought this season with a great season finale. i will commend the whole cast and crew with all my heart. but now, i dont think that;s gonna happen.
last thing~~~~~~~don't get it the wrong way , but i think cobie's eyes are getting smaller and smaller. dont judge me, i like Cobie with big eyes ??
my rule | April 30, 2009 @ 10:46 am
i always do the "two days rule" . cause one day means desperate. three days means "you know the rule, i'm counting days too". two days means, "surprise! and by the way, i like you a lot. "
seriously, guys. it works, two in three time.
Westfall | April 30, 2009 @ 10:07 am
I think Ted pretty much killed any discussion about Holli being the mother with his final line "when i got your mother's number i called her right away". And the way he reffers to Holli is not how he would to the Mother, IMO. When the mother comes along, i think we'll know it… or will we? LOL JK LOL
Oh, and Stan 's the man. Loved that guy.
Dissertation_slacker | April 30, 2009 @ 9:54 pm
Can we talk about the episode 22 "pregnancy shocker" clip that's on the CBS website?!! I live in Canada and actually can't access it ("this video is not available for your geographic location") – arg – and the internet is supposed to transgress all geographical borders. And it's too short a clip to be available as a torrent anywhere.
Anyway, so for those of you who have seen it: What's going on there? Is Robin supposed to be pregnant or what?!!
Afterglow | April 30, 2009 @ 10:39 pm
Here's the promo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdu_nGyfM0Y
Westfall | April 30, 2009 @ 10:51 pm
Thanks for the link, Afterglow.
IMO she says that just to get rid of Barney, since, having reached such a milestone as the one in this promo, Barney must be unbarably annoying. She does seem to be sick with something and just doesn't want to put up with him.
Just as they showed Lilly's enlarged belly from eating hot-dogs as an homage to Hannigan's pregnancy, maybe this is the same for Smulders.
Although, considering how promiscuous Robin is, it could be a way to spice the story line and deal with Cobbie's actual pregnancy onscreen. It would certainly complicate things for poor Barney.
I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Oh, and kudos to Barney for its 200th. LOL.
Major Buzzkill | May 1, 2009 @ 6:37 pm
It seems super clear to me in that promo that Robin's just sick and trying to get Barney to leave her alone.
Also, 200? That number is waaay low. I feel like there must be some kind of network pressure to keep it slightly decent. Because 2,000 seems like it would be closer :p
Dissertation_slacker | May 1, 2009 @ 7:01 pm
I also thought 200 was low. But I remember reading an alternate description of the upcoming episode a while back (I think initially it was supposed to air earlier) that said that Marshall was going to construct a statistical graph showing that Barney actually 'doesn't get the girl' all that often….
Amy | May 1, 2009 @ 10:04 pm
