Season 4, Episode 24 Finale: The Leap Discussion

As far as finales go this one was a little light on the revelations. No slow motion kissing while some sweet indie song wells up, no weddings, no break ups, no life threatening accidents (though there was a hospitalization.) That being said, this was an amazing finale. It’s one of my favorites. It was mellow and subtle, but did a great job of wrapping up plot lines from throughout the season. We all got to see Robin and Barney discuss their feelings, and in a way that proved more hilarious than I could’ve expected. It also gave Ted the final push he needed to get toward the mother.
This finale was so good I’m not sure how to really talk about it. This recap won’t do it justice. It was really good. But I’ll try.
Ted

We’ve watched Ted suffer long enough. One of the things I’ve struggled with the past two seasons is how hard life has been for him. The poor guy just can’t catch a break. I thought he’d hit his epiphany last week, in the car with Stella. Turns out he needed both professional and social failure in order to move on. With his penchant for correcting and delusions of being orally gifted (in speech writing you perv) he’ll probably make a great professor.

A lot of you are complaining that nothing happened with Ted. I have to ask, what show are you watching? The end of this season showed Ted reaching bottom. Becoming a teacher is his path out of that. Left at the alter, fired from his job, failing to make it as an architect on his own, Ted’s life was seriously sucking. Now that he’s going to be a professor it can be assumed he’ll get back on track. It took him two years in the woods to realize the map he’d created for his life wasn’t working. At least he’s on a path back out. What else do you want?
Mr. Goat

I loved the goat. When it first ran by when Ted was at his drafting table I laughed out loud. I love the sound of its little goat hooves skittering across the hard wood floor. I was really wondering why they needed an animatronic version but the epic goat battle was worth it. I love that Murder Train has become the theme song for any violence in the show.
RoBarn

First, I love how Robin found out. Randomly over hearing Barney talking to Ted feels more realistic and authentic than some big dramatic reveal. Also, note the nuance of Smulders when she says “It’s Barney…” about three different ways.
If you go back through the archives of this blog you will see that I was a big opponent of a Barney-Robin relationship. I thought it would neuter Barney and would always feel like a reach. Tonight I was proven wrong. Robin continually Mosbying Barney was hilarious, in character, and perfect. The scene in the hospital with the two of them going back and forth couldn’t have been better. I don’t even want to talk about it, I just want to rewatch it over and over. Every line, the timing, delivering, pace. It was absolutely right.

Perfect as it was, it wasn’t my favorite moment. That would be just before Barney was about to take the leap. See above the moment of hesitation, then him meet Robin’s eyes. He jumped over that gap for her, into a new chapter as much as Ted.
Watching so much Party Down lately has taught me one thing: one of my favorite story tropes is the motivational woman. The girl who motivates you to do your best, to conquer your fears and doubts. Deep down, it’s what all (Editor’s note: When I say “all” I mean “all the cool ones”) guys want. Tonight, Robin was that girl for Barney.
Favorite Moments
Barney’s Robin-as-suit metaphor is awesome. It’s the exact kind of example Barney would give. Comparing Robin to suits? He really does care about her. All joking aside, the sentiment between Ted and Barney in that scene is awesome. Barney is nervous and awkward, Ted is romantic, loving to see love bloom. After firing—and rehiring—Barney as a bro, Ted is ready to see him happy.
- “Mosbying” someone. Fantastic. Be careful kids, that’s a real thing. Don’t make the same mistake Ted did
- The nod to Hannigan’s pregnancy was hilarious “I knew you’d gained some weight lately.”
- Great as they looked when they were pregnant, it was nice to see Robin and Lily back to their “regular” selves. God damn is Robin beautiful. To quote my coworker, “she’s right in my wheelhouse.”
- I love Marshall telling Robin she’s “eh”. Freakishly tall and doesn’t believe in ghosts. Marshall is awesome.
- “Baaaa means baaaa”
- The Sven call back was amazing.
- I love Robin begging them to watch her show
- Lily was back in full force: parenting Marshall, not keeping secrets, giving Ted advice. I missed her.
- The awesome song that plays while they all jump is “Prophets” by AC Newman buy it from

Closing
For those of you who felt like last week’s episode didn’t offer any pay off think about Ted’s realization tonight. When he flashed back through everything that had happened to him and ended with “it was the greatest year of my life”, it wouldn’t have resonated if he hadn’t had his epiphany in the car with Stella last week. That was him hitting bottom, and tonight we saw him get back up, and take the leap.
Now that we know the mother was in Ted’s class can we close the book on all the theories? I don’t want to hear that coat check girl went back to college. I don’t want to hear that Robin changed careers and went to school for architecture. I don’t want to hear that Victoria walked into Architecture 101 when she was looking for Advanced Patisserie. Tracy from Iowa doesn’t go to college for architecture. Enough. We haven’t met the mother yet. K? K.
To my point earlier of who from Ted’s past returned? Ayah got it. It was the slutty pumpkin of course. Check it:

Tada!
It’s been really great sharing this season with you guys. Somewhere a few episodes back the commenting, and therefore the whole site, really stepped up a notch. I'm pretty sure I broke my boyfriend's eardrums with the amount of girlish squealing going on tonight. Ted has never been my favorite character of the show, but I loved to see him grow up and get some direction in his life. And the Robarn stuff? I never get tired of the "fighting, now we're kissing" scenarios. They never get old if done correctly. Robarn was done with just the amount of realism and hyper-reality that I love about HIMYM. Both of the actors really stepped it above even their normal high marks for this one. Marshall and his "eh" comment cause me to choke and turn blue. And the Sven thing? We had to pause the DVR for a full minute to stop laughing. The Sven scene is one we continually show our friends to introduce them to HIMYM, so the referback was brilliant.
I'm really looking forward to the tension dating a student will bring next season. Also, I'm looking forward to see the popular movie Stella's husband will make and undoubtedly parody Ted in.
wontonsean | May 19, 2009 @ 4:40 am
Hey JD, you're right the episode was awesome, Really great pick up on Slutty Pumpkin there, I probably would have never spotted it. SO much to talk about the episode and season as a whole, but I gotta review it some more. All the best to you sir, wonderful blog as always, your friend from Canada,
Evlsushi | May 19, 2009 @ 4:45 am
Hey, The Office made up for the entire season with the last minute of the finale. That's easily the most Krisinski has ever acted on the show.
…and it was great.
barneyXrobin | May 19, 2009 @ 5:05 am
I didn't say it wasn't good. I just like HIMYM's better. The office just lost its hold on me when Holly moved away.
GeL | May 19, 2009 @ 5:10 am
OMG JD!!! I was this close to feeling so disappointed about tonight's finale UNTIL…I read your post! You put a lot of things into perspective and believe it or not….i read your blog tonight with Prophets by A.C. Newman in the background and the finale totally redeemed itself!! It was a great ending to the season and to finally see Ted back to his old self, I'm so looking forward to next season! I cried just knowing that I would have to wait another three months to watch new episodes, but relieved that I could rewatch some of the old eps.
Does anyone know when season 4 will be available to buy on DVD?
Again JD, Great POST!!!
roland | May 19, 2009 @ 5:20 am
Great recap JD! =) It's been a pleasure reading your blog every week, it's amazing and I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve for the hiatus, I'm sure it's going to be awesome. Woah, and I totally did NOT see the Slutty Pumpkin! =D Any idea what the cast will be up to over the break?
Katie Vengeance | May 19, 2009 @ 5:23 am
himym09 | May 19, 2009 @ 5:46 am
this is a great recap. and i LOVED the episode!! loved all the callbacks of old stuff, i.e.
1) the slutty pumpkin (noticed her the first time around too
)
2) "i can jump that far" (from that episode where ted says "there are three mistakes uncle marshall likes to say he made in his life.." and it flashes back to him as a kid, saying "i can jump that far")
3) "The Leap" – love how they worked in the pilot right there where ted says he's gonna take the leap like the jumper on the bridge couldn't
4) "Murder Train" – how awesome is it that they keep bringing this thing back!!
5) mosbying somebody has got to be the meanest and funniest way to get rid of somebody..at least when you actually call it mosbying!
6) the goat..what's not to love? Missy was perfect and especially the fight and the "baaah means baaaah"
the marshall-can't-jump was dragged out a little to long for my taste, plus i found the robarn stuff a litlle over the top but, hey, wouldn't know what else they could've done, it's a tough one. this was just an AMAZING episode. and i'm gonna watch it again right now
JackAtak08 | May 19, 2009 @ 5:47 am
Whats bad?
I think too much recycled footage in this episode. I understand call backs, but I just feel like this episode was either shorter than normal ones, or just felt shorter. Maybe what I really feel is HIMYM is to the point where they deserve hour long season finales.
himym09 | May 19, 2009 @ 5:49 am
ps: and this one had THE BEST first scene, i love that moment between ted and barney. it's so sentimental (they're friendship needed that in my opinion, it's often displayed as too shallow, i think, especially compared to ted/marshall) yet soo funny with the "..because i explained to you"
oh and also, i love how both the girls joked about their being pregnant when in reality they were as we all know. overall, i really like how the writers have worked in the pregnancies and the resulting bellies and kept joking about it
katiebug | May 19, 2009 @ 5:52 am
you can preorder it on amazon, but there isn't a release date yet.
(i'd guess late summer or early fall probably a few weeks before season 5 starts and/or the emmy's in order to boast nph's profile.)
himym09 | May 19, 2009 @ 5:52 am
sorry i keep posting — but i just remembered the last thing i loved (promise
) : the comparison betwenn missy the goat and her washcloth and ted and architecture..
katiebug | May 19, 2009 @ 5:59 am
Oh HIMYM Season 4: how frustrating you were. On the one hand, the show has never been more popular, but on the other, how different it feels from season 1.
The RoBarn stuff was bloody fabulous. I really can't wait to see how it plays out. I trust that it will legendary. I also think that Ted on the path that he needs to be on. I also think I had a cathartic moment re: douche Ted in the last two episodes and that I might actually be reinvested in him.
Oddly, I found the Marshall/Lily stuff the least interesting. I can't wait for season 5 to have Lily and Robin back again in full force. I hadn't realized how much their awesome wardrobes were part of my enjoyment of the show until they spent so much time sitting down in pleasant blouses. (And until I found myself glad that Stella was back just so I could think, Her clothes rock!)
I've been a fan since episode 1, and I can definitely say that almost every season after the first disappointed me somewhat. But after the DVDs would come out, I'd start rewatching and realize that I was wrong. Season 2 is almost as good (perhaps better even) than season 1. Season 3 may have a few clunkers (cough No Tomorrow cough), but it has enough brilliant moments to make up. Right now, I'm just going to trust that Season 4 redeems itself on repeat viewings.
JD: two items you might be interested in. Alan Sepinwall has a great interview with Carter up on his blog. Also NPH is going to be hosting the Tonys.
Cheers~
Serenichi | May 19, 2009 @ 6:13 am
Aw, but if that's the slutty pumpkin back there, then Marshall is wearing the WRONG Halloween costume. Although, the Dracula costume is a reference to Segal's musical I'm assuming. :3
chelsea | May 19, 2009 @ 6:19 am
yippie! I hope we do get to meet the Slutty Pumpkin!!
"Oh and on the off chance that's Ted's future wife, maybe we should stop calling her the slutty pumpkin"
himym09 | May 19, 2009 @ 6:20 am
you're right! he was cher that year..huh.. i hate people that try to rationalize away mistakes made by the makers…BUT…
maybe it was halloween season 2 or later, since ted had given up on the slutty pumpkin in season one. that'd be cool, i think.
aaaand another thhing: barney the violinist is great
Aparna | May 19, 2009 @ 6:28 am
i love your blog, i come here all the time to get as much info as i can on himym…so, in honor of the finale, i'll post a comment! i loved the finale, like you said, for the same reasons; it didn't need to be earth shattering to be good. instead of sitting on the edge of our seats, we got to lean back, contently (but not complacently! there's so much more to know!)…i'm so excited about barney/robin! and i must say, prof mosby looks pretty cute…
i'm going to miss this show over the summer! i've been a fan from the beginning and i love how it's become so popular! i'll def. be checking back for more news!
and shout out to slutty pumpkin…
Evlsushi | May 19, 2009 @ 6:32 am
I think this is the die-hard fan in you calling out. I hate the reuse of old clips, but for the more casual viewer, they're kinda necessary to understand the plot.
But I second the hour long finales.
TheMix | May 19, 2009 @ 7:35 am
Well NOW what the hell am I going to write for my season recap….
Damnit J.D. You're making me look bad and I haven't even written the damn thing yet.
une.heure.bondée. | May 19, 2009 @ 7:36 am
ok, I was reading the comments on the preview post and I was surprised with how many people thought it was a "meh" finale! It wasn't meh, it was awesome! I think I can honestly say it was my favourite finale – it's a close one between "Something Blue" and this one, but this one wins out because I love Barney and Robin and the end scene with all of the gang jumping over to the roof made me happy and smile like a fool. It felt authentic. So, I don't care what anyone else says, I thought it was an amazing finale.
Herbert | May 19, 2009 @ 8:12 am
Before i start to comment on how awesome the show is! I'd like to congratulate Colbie on giving birth on the 15th of May. Congrats!
Probably the best episode. It lived to the high expecatations it was given. I loved the fight/tension between Barney n Robin. "It's Barney…" was the qoute of the episode for me, including Marshall's "Eh". I agree with you the Robin as Suits was a good metaphor for Barney. I also love how through out the show they have life teachins.
Can't wait for my uni exams to be over! HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER SESH! SEASONS 1-4!!!
profx | May 19, 2009 @ 8:15 am
Hhhmmm, isn't the professor title a senior one? I mean, masters degree and all that… oh well, it's fiction.
barneyXrobin | May 19, 2009 @ 4:44 am
I really like this finale. Much more than the office. I loved the Barney-Robin scenes. I hope they keep this going in season 5.
Also good job picking up on the slutty pumpkin. I would have not seen that if it was not for you. I need to rewatch the episode now.
steve | May 19, 2009 @ 9:35 am
The clip of Ted in the the classroom was really odd…like the show is taking a step BACKWARD to the sitcoms that we were watching in the 80's and 90's. It was very strange, and also very fitting…this is going to be interesting.
HAPPY HALFWAY POINT!…it's all leading to the series finale from here.
JD you should make a post explaining that this summer is "halftime" in the HIMYM world. Also, what impact does Chris Harris leaving have on the show (I know this was news like…two years ago…but the goat was news three years ago).
steve | May 19, 2009 @ 9:40 am
I don't think that this season will particularly stand out after you watch it again, it's got clunkers and hits alike, but they're all just as intermingled as the rest of the series is. After all, Little Minnesota was annoying enough that I haven't watched all of it again, but Benefits and Three Day Storm came right after it and those were pretty much classics.
steve | May 19, 2009 @ 9:44 am
He won't be dating her next season c'mon.
He'll decide to stop being a lecherous old man and be awesome instead.
O shit Barney has to grow up now…
Blossom | May 19, 2009 @ 9:51 am
I second that.
bBlossom82 | May 19, 2009 @ 9:59 am
"i can jump that far" is from episode 13, three days of snow, when Ted and Barney are thinking about buying a bar.
Syaz | May 19, 2009 @ 11:19 am
I honestly thought they were going to show the mother. everyone said they were gonna show the mother. i was really disappointed with that but i loved the episode. errrrghh I WANNA SEE THE MOTHER!
George | May 19, 2009 @ 11:24 am
at the moment i hate HIMYM, it stopped on another cliffhanger which is going to send me to a mental hospital…ahh! – in all seriousness i loved the episode.
as for the slutty pumpkin, i dont think thats her, simply becasue shes not wearing a pumpkin suit.
Thomas | May 19, 2009 @ 11:47 am
What a great finish to the season. As much as I love Lily and Marshall, Robin and Barney, I've always been most invesTed (flashbacks from last week's episode!) in Ted's story. While there is so much I get out of HIMYM, what really makes it is you have this great romantic story at its heart that isn't soppy or over the top. It just seems real. And I thought 'The Leap' was another great example of this, up there with 'Come On' from season one.
Anyway from the other stuff, great recap and I totally agree about Scherbatsky. An awesome girl indeed, and I think they've set things up nicely for her and Barney in that it looks like this will be a less that conventional relationship which probably suits those characters best. The Sven bit was hilarious, I think Professor Mosby will be using them as an example of whats wrong with architecture at some point. And it was great to see the Slutty Pumpkin!
gisella | May 19, 2009 @ 11:57 am
Totally agreee,, his acted was great!..I love both shows too
annie | May 19, 2009 @ 12:20 pm
ahhh. i was so glad that the finale reached my expectations. i live in london and have been watching each epsiode every tuesday morning in my free period… now i guess i'll actually have to do some revision instead.
the goat bit had me 'literally' laughing out loud… especially the murder train song with it. and Marshall telling Robin she’s “eh”. Freakishly tall and doesn’t believe in ghosts.
also wanted to add.. i just checked in the pilot and when ted sees robin on TV he says, "i've got to do what that guy couldn't. i've got to take the leap." thought it was quite clever how he eventually took the leap in tonights episode.
also wanted to say thankyou for these awesome reviews.. i look forward to reading them after each episode so thanks very very much.
now i've only got to wait 3 more months..so roll on season 5.
Meck | May 19, 2009 @ 1:26 pm
woa you're right. he should be Cher if that's the slutty pumpkin.
Josh | May 19, 2009 @ 1:30 pm
JD, could not agree more with your summary – I was disappointed with last week's episode but the finale fixed it up. And what a fantastic pickup of the Slutty Pumkin – I never would have spotted that. It was great to have Lily back too. This show now lays two "mother myths" to bed, the other being the Legend of Tracey (hopefully).
Hey, maybe now the genius from Yahoo will realize that Stella is NOT the mother? Or do you think he still thinks she could be in the class?
CanadianWingman | May 19, 2009 @ 2:09 pm
JD I think I went hoarse arguing the merits of the last few episodes with my friends last night after the finale. I am not sure they all appreciate the subtle nuances and the great writing this show really has. You are absolutely right about the ROBARN scene, it was great, I don't know another sitcom pair that could have pulled that off. This episode shows why this show stands out as the best of its kind.
And B to the W, Ted dates one of his students? For a guy without a masters degree to be a prof is impressive enough, but he's going to be breaking some ethical boundaries on that one. I wonder if that will be woven into the show somehow.
Sara | May 19, 2009 @ 2:12 pm
I think the episode should have ended with the neighbors yelling at them for jumping on their patio.
Plus, how did they get out eventually? Did they jump back or did they have to go through the neighbor's apartment? I know I'm being nit-picky, I just think it would be funny to show them all after the jump going "So what do we do now???" and being trapped there with nothing to do.
Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 2:13 pm
I love the attention to detail on this show. I just rewatched the Three Days Of Snow episode, and when Marshall says "I can jump that far," you can totally see the inflatable pool in the background. I wonder if that means they also have a plan for "I'm gonna win her back?" Maybe they're finally bring back Victoria?
Chris | May 19, 2009 @ 2:18 pm
Hey JD, not sure if someone already commented on this but you didnt mention that we'd already seen Marshal standin on the roof saying "i can jump that far" it is right before he shaves his hair off at the wedding
(maybe i completely glossed over this and you did so sorry if thats what ive done)
but in seeing that it reminded me that there is hope for all the stupid things they say in the show (hopin for Ted trapped under a fake boulder at the mall)
Chris | May 19, 2009 @ 2:23 pm
sorry, got my own info wrong, it was when he bought the apartment
his 3 biggest mistakes: the apartment, the hair, the leap (is that gonna be a mistake in the future?????)
Chris | May 19, 2009 @ 2:25 pm
dammit, i dont know what episode it is, theyre all spinnin round in my head
its one big marshall filled mess
Chris | May 19, 2009 @ 2:27 pm
THANK YOU
i knew id seen the scene before, could not remember
as my comments show
Sebastian | May 19, 2009 @ 2:50 pm
Wow, I didn't know this show had such a rabid and dedicated following. Awesome!
Thanks, guys.
Daniel Saks | May 19, 2009 @ 3:04 pm
And a character who can fly. Superman would have been sad and a little scary Dracula Hilarious!
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 3:21 pm
Now all that's left is Teds "I can win her back". Next season perhaps? Maybe a certain student?
jen209 | May 19, 2009 @ 3:34 pm
And plus, the slutty pumpkin is supposed to be in an actual pumpkin costume (ie big and round) that was cut in "strategic places". I really don't think that was supposed to be the slutty pumpkin.
Beth | May 19, 2009 @ 3:39 pm
When Robin told Barney that she loved him, and he was "over her" I was so mad! I thought that it was a lame way to end the RoBarn thing. But, I hadn't anticipated that she was "Mosbying" him–genius! I loved how she said "It's Barney" to Lilly and Marshall. My favorite scene is Barney and Robin's scene in the hospital. It's a perfect way for these two to interact. I think they will be great together, but there's no way they will be a conventional couple.
JustinDickinson | May 19, 2009 @ 3:42 pm
I didn't include this in my recap but I just realized. The hospital scene was even more perfect because it was in the hospital where Barney first discovered he had feelings for Robin.
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 4:04 pm
Good point! LOL.
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 4:07 pm
We don't know he doesn't have a masters degree. As for dating a student maybe (as was said in another popular sitcom) its just frowned upon. In other words Ted is gona pull a Geller.
Kristin | May 19, 2009 @ 4:42 pm
But this episode does not answer ANY of my Barney/Robin questions! I was counting on it and HIMYM let me down…
Katie | May 19, 2009 @ 4:48 pm
So I really enjoyed this season finally! It fit perfectly with the show.
When we finally got to see Ted in his new teaching form, for me it felt more right to me than him being an architect. And the entire epic Mr.Goat/Mosby battle scene had me laughing out loud! Overall this episode was amazing, nuff said!
Mariana | May 19, 2009 @ 5:02 pm
I just watched the episode and it tottally rocked my world!, I loved it, I loved it, I loved it!. The Sven refference made fall off my chair, fantastic! And I agree with Ted making more sense as a professor than as an architect. I have a question though, what class is Ted teaching? because if it is Architecture 101, shouldn´t he have freshmen as students? So the mother will be far younger than he is? Just a thought. I am so excited we are on our way to meet the mother, and I loooove that Barney and Robin are together now, its like everything is falling into place.
ELS | May 19, 2009 @ 5:09 pm
She doesn't necessarily have to be younger than he is. It isn't out of the question for someone to begin taking college courses when they're thirty, you know? The term "freshman" doesn't just apply to eighteen-year-olds.
Froggy212 | May 19, 2009 @ 5:15 pm
thanks for blogging!
Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 5:20 pm
I don't recall anyone mentioning what date tonights episode took place on. The thanksgiving and christmas episodes havent aired on thanksgiving or christmas. And as far as the mother being a student, I think you're making a pretty big assumption. All we've been told so far is that the mother was in the classroom
It could be a student, but it could be someone else.
JustinDickinson | May 19, 2009 @ 5:21 pm
What questions do you still have?
dan | May 19, 2009 @ 5:37 pm
Just in case anyone didn't catch this over at Sepinwall's blog:

I'm with you. I don't think that girls is the slutty pumpkin. And, by the way, I do want Victoria to walk into Architecture 101 when she was looking for Advanced Patisserie. Sometimes the owner of this blog is too radical on his comments. On the other hand is his blog… so…
Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 5:41 pm
This is a great interview.
little barney | May 19, 2009 @ 6:23 pm
The girl in the halloween section was not the slutty pumpkin, if you remember that episode, Marshall was dressed as Cher.
Mariana | May 19, 2009 @ 6:38 pm
That is true.
MotherShip | May 19, 2009 @ 7:12 pm
"We haven’t met the mother yet. K? K."
You seem so sure about that. What if someone from Ted’s past found out about his class and went to it just to meet him.
I_Mosbied_You | May 19, 2009 @ 7:13 pm
Well, i gotta say, this finale was just awesome!
The whole 'BRo love' scene was great, but does this mean that Barney will no longer be a womanizer? I think they will find a way to keep him the 'old school' Barney.
Anyway, if Ted meets the mom at the school, it means that there will be no mistery from now on. No barney, no mistery? HELL NO. I hope HIMYM doesn't turn into a typical sitcom.
It will be a long summer without HIMYM.
P.S: Great catch JD on the slutty pumpkin! And, I think that who returned from the past was the goat, but it's just a thought.
Take care!
JustinDickinson | May 19, 2009 @ 7:15 pm
I'm sure of it because the show has said it over and over. I know part of the fun is to guess who the mother is, but there are facts presented. We have info now we didn't before. We have to make our guesses educated.

Excellent recap, JD. I too hope that all the ridiculous theories about how Robin could be the mother will finally come to an end, but I am not holding my breath. I do think it will be a long time before we actually meet the mother, but at least they've given us a clue as to where she is… and, frankly, I'm way more invested in the Robin/Barney storyline anyway. Cobie & NPH acted their socks off in that hospital scene (and somebody PLEASE give NPH his Emmy already after this season?!?) and the look they exchanged just before Barney lept just melted my heart. I'm very interested in how they're going to work through their feelings for each other next year.
I_Mosbied_You | May 19, 2009 @ 7:29 pm
Absolutely, NPH – EMMY award winner.
Just one thing, I thought Ted told his kids in one episode, that he had designed a building in NYC. Did the writers forget about it?
Btw, did you notice that Barney and Marshal have similar jobs just like Ted and Lilly?
I_Mosbied_You | May 19, 2009 @ 7:42 pm
i just figured it out, ted's scream is what barney felt after robin mosbied him.
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 3:46 pm
I just watched the episode and, unlike other weeks, i waited till i had seen it to read your recap. You hit the nail once again. And thatnks for the slutty pumpkin, i hadn't noticed that.
I don't know if its because its new or because its something i've been waiting for a long time but this has become my favorite episode for the season, maybe even the whole 4 seasons. It shows all those that were doubting the show and complaining of all the detours from the mother story that in the end, all the pieces fit and you need them all to see the big picture.
And the goat… i don't know what i was expecting after over a year of speculation but this is a good example of how a little can be a lot. So she "just" wrestled with Ted. I think i peed a little.
It would have been funny to see the people who live on that appartment where they leapt to asking "WTF?" – not really but… aren't they trespassing??!! JK LOL
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 3:51 pm
The only complaint i have for this episode is the timming thing. I know i'm repeating myself but follow me here:
-According to last years goat episode, Ted's birthday is April 25th.
-He met Stella and Tony in May. Therefore Tony only proposed to get Ted that teacher job in May.
-If this episode happens in Teds 31st birthday party one of two things is wrong. Either his birth date was wrong last season (doubtful since future Ted said the date himself). Or this years surprise party was done a couple of weeks after the actual birthday.
But i'm ready to let that slide for now and just enjoy what was an awesome episode.
Also, for the 2nd year straight, Ted ends up at the hospital for the season finale. Good to see the same orderly giving Ted some grief.
So now Ted is a teacher and the mother will be his student… Season 5, BRING IT!!!
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 4:03 pm
Hope this can clarify the confusion:
The scene with Marshal saying "I can jump that far!" is from season 4's "Three Days of Snow".
The 3 big mistakes that Marshal commited in his life were shown in season 3's "Dowisetrepla" and don't include that scene. What we see is Marshal as a kid on the roof of his house with cardboard wings in his arms and baloons strapped on his back, as other kids (maybe even his brothers) incite him to jump (wich he presumably did). That was the 1st mistake, the 2nd was the haircut he did to himself on his wedding day and the 3rd was buying the house in that episode (Dowisetrepla).
B-Minus | May 19, 2009 @ 8:26 pm
Is it possible this was a different halloween and ted missed her?
Dave | May 19, 2009 @ 8:32 pm
Kept waiting for a 'slap.' Nothin….maybe next year….
Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 9:21 pm
Chris, 'I can jump that far' is in the montage of 'five-word phrases that shouldn't be said' in Three Days of Snow (along with 'I'm gonna win her back' and 'I can trust you guys')
Chris | May 19, 2009 @ 9:35 pm
i know, thank you!!!
i bust my leg last week and have had nothing to do so watched most of the show, everything has gotten squished together
Jean-Christophe | May 19, 2009 @ 9:45 pm
it was just so awesoooooooooooooooommmmme…
Westfall | May 19, 2009 @ 6:03 pm
They didn't say the date but in "Right Place, Right Time" Ted said in the opening monologue " In May 2009…". Since it was in that episode and the next that he met Stella and Tony it stands to reason the events of those episodes take place in May. Since they open this episode with them talking about Ted taking the job as a professor, a job Tony got him, its only logical to assume this episode happens after the previous 2. But since this episode takes place during Teds birthday party, it opens a clear paradox since that is April 25th. Thats my view on the subject.
But as i said it doesn't make this episode any less awesome.
Kaity | May 19, 2009 @ 10:23 pm
Hi!I've seen ths site before but never really stopped by and looked around but i found it earlier when i was looking for screencaps of the show and i noticed you did eppy reviews.I decieded to check out the one you did for last nights ep just b/c i <3 it so much!:).im glad someone else enjoyed it as much as I did.I thought excatly what you thought:even though nothing "huge" happened it was still perfect in its own rite(note that i hearted your intro to this review about you u couldnt do the ep justice but you'll try).I love Brotp but was half way through the season got nervous that they may be too perfect for one another or they just wouldnt work and that the writters of the show probally should of waited a few more seasons before getting the [idea of them at least] them together, but the faniale kinda helped me a little bit on thinking maybe theres hope for them.im not sure excatly where they're going w/this,like maybe they'll just get to know one another more and then wont start offically dating until mid S5.idk but i just hope it works out well enough.
Kaity | May 19, 2009 @ 10:23 pm
I so loved that Ted's a professor now,it fits him so.(and his talk w/Stella in the car in "As Fast As She Can" was just the encouragement he needed-so meaningful)
Also i loved all of your favs.especially Robins cute adorable whine in her voice when she begged them to watch her show,i mean just the statement itself was great but her deliverence just made it even better.i also agree that Ms.Cobbie always looks so effing amazing.i also didnt notice (excatly)Barneys hesistation but glad you did.//i loved their hospital scene-some wonderful banter there.this is seriously the best comedy on right now and it saddens me that i know that it's going to end soon.but did we really expect a show called "How I Met Your Mother" last very long, especially when the seeker is already in his lateish 20s in the beginning of the series-oh well,i guess we'll just have to make the best last while we can.
yayay | May 19, 2009 @ 10:42 pm
did cobie had her baby? i never knew, where did you read about this?
in any case, congratulations are due, cobie rocks!

i really dont get this, he's a young guy. my father was my mother's teacher in university, he was 11 yrs older than her, but i cant see why this is a big deal. in high school, yes, it would be a problem. but in a university, why is that a problem? do teachers in the us and canada, teach the same students for more than a year? here, they teach them only for a semester, so i cant see why this is a moral issue
Maria | May 19, 2009 @ 10:47 pm

I have nothing more to say. The finale made me feel warm and oh how I love Barney. That guy is awesome.

I just want to say I agree with everything you wrote JD! I want to watch this episode over and over again. I loved it. So many awesome things happened
OhEmGee | May 19, 2009 @ 11:07 pm
The 'Murder' song callback was genius. Everything about this episode was great–about a monthor two ago, I would have said season four hasn't been at the show's best, but it has been brilliant these past few weeks. I'm so excited about RoBran; their moment was classic Robin and Barney.
Durign the part when they all jump, I was expecting one of them to fall, but they didn't, and I thought that was legendary. Loved this finale, I can't wait to get this season on DVD. =]
Maggie | May 19, 2009 @ 11:44 pm
I really liked the finale too, even though it was far more low-key than any of the previous ones.
And I enjoy that you're lending evidence to my theory that the Mother is the Slutty Pumpkin… I've thought that since Season 1. Why? We've never met her, only Ted's gooey eyed remembrance of her. Bays & Thomas love bringing back random details from the past (pick any of the like twelve examples in this episode alone).
Also- how sweet were Marshall's vampire cape wings?
tino | May 19, 2009 @ 11:58 pm
First of all I gotta say I've been in love with this show for over 4 months now. I started watching season One in January after my brother told me about it and let me borrow his DVDs. It took me less than 20 days to watch season 1 and 2, following season 3 and now season 4. In my opinion, Season 2 is the best thanks to the whole Ted – Robyn thing. From the first show on I've been waiting on the episode to reveal the mother. And here's the problem of the show as I experience it:
Viewers (in particular: me) get hooked up by the distraction of the case that this whole sitcom revolves around how some New Yorker met the love his life, telling his kids all about it 30 years later. The plot sounds great but here's the downside. It's not about kids, Ted's wife or anyone's mother anymore. We've been promised the subject of the show will be discussed furtherly towards the end of this season. Whatever people say, it was not. I guess there's going to be a season 5 but it's going to take at least til the end of the year til wie might see first pictures. I have no real clue how they're gonna do it with Hannigan and Smulders being pregnant and all. I can't see "How I Met Your Mother" going anywhere from here on – looks like I gotta watch seasons one and two again.
Sad.

I forgot where, but i found it the other nite while i was searchin up some himym stuff
AD | May 19, 2009 @ 9:40 pm
What’s up with all the recent references of HIMYM on family guy. I think the guys actually played themselves on the most recent episode. There must be some love between Seth mac and carter bays because the shows aren’t even on the same network.
Major Buzzkill | May 20, 2009 @ 3:31 am
JD, I usually agree with you and this is no exception. You hit the nail on the head with your review. Of COURSE Ted has progressed a lot in the end of this season. It's great. Ted isn't my favourite but I really like that he's progressing, and that we are getting more hints about the mother.
But yeah, for me, this ep was always going to be all about Barney and Robin. I didn't watch any promos or read spoilers and I'm glad. It was all a surprise and a fantastic one. I was SO worried when she first told him she loved him because that was so stereotypical, a cop-out, etc.. when we found out what she was doing, it made so much more sense. And that hospital scene… exactly why we know they will be the cliche-breaking couple of the century. I love that they made fun of all the ridiculous things Robin *could* have said to him. When in honesty the truth is she has *some* kinds of feelings for him, but has never been forced to consider them. Well, that'll change in season 5. I can't wait!
In the meantime, I look forward to some summer fun. And the DVDs. I don't care what anyone says – Season 4 may be my favourite so far.
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:31 am
I didn't think it was the pumpkin… its a girl in an orange poof, but it didn't look pumpkinish to me, especially not a pumpkin carved in the right places to be a slutty pumpkin. I guess I will just pretend though because its more fun that way.
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:33 am
They usually wait until after the season starts (which drives me crazy because I try to start friends on the show over the summer, and then they start the next season without episodes or have to wait to start watching).
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:35 am
I agree, I totally hate the recaps, I don't need to see the scene again. In fact I can "listen" to an episode from season 1 – 3 and not even watch and still find it hilarious because I know exactly what they are doing.
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:37 am
That's what I said!!!!!!!!!!
Yay Jen yay! I didn't think it was her either.
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:40 am
I think it depends on what you teach. Ted has been in the real world with a real job for a while. He is probably an Assistant Professor, still a professor but without tenure.
Plus in practical degrees you don't always have to hold upper degrees, its more about your past work history. (I mean the man had a building in WA!)
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:41 am
Oh it happens ALL THE TIME! I'm a grad student, and there are more than a few professors who have married their grad students. MORE THAN A FEW!
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:43 am
I would love nothing more than the next season starting with them trying to figure out how to get back to their "taller" building when no doors are open to get down off the other buildings roof. Hahah.
Amy | May 20, 2009 @ 3:45 am
With the same Nurse man too!

Matt | May 20, 2009 @ 3:58 am
Ive only really gotten into the Show from Season 3 onwards, so Ive never been as involved with the 'Will or wont Ted meet the mother plotline'. Ted from what Ive seen contrasts realy between Douche Ted , to more noble Ted. It's Barney and perhaps Marshall who seem to have developed the most.. Barney because of Robin and Marshall because they are less inclined to play him off Lily now (and he often plays off against Barney now). In fact Barney in a weird way has become the board that everyone seems to playing off against, Lily being his 'confidante', Marshall because of the work issue and Robin because of the obvious reasons.
Matt | May 20, 2009 @ 3:59 am
Assuming of course they keep the story on track with Barney and Robin next season we could see 'Bachelor Pad Barney' being 'changed' (assuming Robin moves in) and it might end up like Season 2's ep where Lily stays for a few days (which I only just recently saw and have a lot of laughs in). To me his residence contrasts a LOT against every other residence we have seen in HIMYM, with its dark blacks , sword on the mantle and stormtrooper. Having to watch Barney twitch again as another female remodels his apartment would easily be a laugh (ie the first time Robin sees the well lit porn library), esp if he knows it will be a more permanent thing. I think it goes to prove that just because Barney now has his sights set on Robin, that there will still be plenty of laughs there.
Has there been any announcements re season 5 anywhere? I havnt seen any, but I have a memory that season 4 was announced fairly late into proceedings.
Major Buzzkill | May 20, 2009 @ 4:25 am
Well Barney changing is a great catalyst for everyone else to have to react to. It affects everyone because it's such a huge thing. It changes the group dynamic. Probably for the better.
BGeo | May 20, 2009 @ 4:57 am
Part ii
What wasn't mentioned thus far was Robin's outfit at the hospital. Obviously she is wearing yellow, which raises flags to die hard HIMYM fans, but she is also wearing a butterfly necklace. As in Ted's Tattoo which eventually lead him to Stella. The details in this show are so awesome.
The Sven reference and Murder Train reference were awesome, much like this entire episode.
In closing, this episode really spoke to why I love this show. It's the life lessons we learn every Monday. Each once is so articulent, and well crafted to life. We all sit on the edge of our seats, waiting for Future Ted share his knowledge with us. We all know nothing good happens after 2 am. We all know that we shouldn't invite your ex to your wedding, and as of Monday night we all know that no matter where you are in your life, life will get better when you take a risk and bet on yourself. Life has meaning when you take the leap.
Absolutely can not wait until September for Season 5
ps JD great recap and thanks for adding me to Facebook

Part i
Where to start… As this is the last episode we can comment on for a while, I'm going to take my time on this comment
I loved this episode. Once again I was surprised by the initial reaction, but like every HIMYM episode, it gets better every time you watch it.
There were so many great call backs. Some unmentioned ones thus far, was when Barney said "This is Kinda Nice" when he was sitting with Ted in thier "hot tub". Barney also said this in Season 3 Episode 1, when they were sitting in the hot tub, before Ted got the Tattoo. I also recently watched the Pilot, and noticed the Conversation regarding the "Leap". Everything said/done in this show is here for a reason…
Ayah | May 20, 2009 @ 11:36 am
I'm late here! Just rewatched it…
First: YAY for Slutty Pumpkin! Now we see how a pumpkin can be slutty, indeed.
(a scene to rewatch because I was distracted from nosferatu-marshall)
This episode wasn't that 'finale-ish' to me, it's good and it's ending the season 4 pretty well, but no big woooow! aaah!, or aaawwww!.. So this was a bit frustrating, but still the episode was good, I liked the scenes when they were all together in Ted's appartment like they used to (missed lilly!) and what dad-Ted says about That year.
For RoBarn, we just have to wait (too long!) and see…
"to Mosby the crap out of him", legendary, right?
Last "I love marshall" of the season, I can't help it:
They call him "the kid" and, in this episode, he looks just like a child!
The way he's dressed, the jumping hesitation, the "I am never.eating.ribs.again", the toy-swimming pool jaccuzzi… I love this kid trapped in that tall and -slightly- chubby guy.
High Hoper | May 20, 2009 @ 11:51 am
Good finale. A little bit decaf, the other finales were much better.
JD, great recap. You won't miss us on summer, because I think everyone will be here for the stuff you are preparing. Maybe a season vs season, the other blog, the always mentioned "things we've learnt watching HIMYM", and a large etc.
I think your work here is superb. Keep it up!
BTW/ Am I the one that thought they didn't know what to do with BRo and the goat, and the way they developed it in the finale could have been done way better. I mean, HIMYM has always done things in a brilliant way, and I thought that, based on being Carter&Bays episode, it would be better.
High Hoper | May 20, 2009 @ 11:52 am
Also, the year the slutty pumpkin appeared, Marshall was Cher and Lily was Sonny. Marshall was not a vampire.
Ayah | May 20, 2009 @ 11:52 am
Hey that makes sense…
Or… it is not THE slutty pumpkin, but A slutty pumpkin!
(we must be crazy fans to start an intense questionement about a person we have seen for two seconds in the background of a flashback!)
Samuel | May 20, 2009 @ 12:02 pm
The episode was amazing. And now we know the significance of the last two episodes, I went back and watched them; it doesn't seem as much as a let down as part of a three parter. Instead, it all became pretty much the best television event of the year.
One thing though: the next season MUST start with them stuck on the patio waiting for their neighbour to come home, or them ringing the cops or something. If it just starts with them in McLarens or whatever, it will be such a wasted opportunity.
Bruna | May 20, 2009 @ 5:46 pm
It was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! I saw it this morning only… kind of late to leave a post right? But i just have to say that watching "how i met your mother" is not only a way of trying to figure out how to deal with the frustrations of the "20 something" like me… but also a GREAT lesson of HOW TO RIGHT A SCREEN PLAY for TV SHOWS! Don´t you guys have the feeling that the average 20 – 24 minutes of the show seem a lot longer?! Low budge productions, great story lines… and a acid-inteligent humor that is really hard to find!!!! This show IS GREAT! No further words! I´m just really happy with this season finalle! can´t wait till september!
kevin | May 20, 2009 @ 7:56 pm
how about the famous 5 word sentences guys say…such as earlier in the season, "we should start a band".
"i can make that jump"

It is most definitely not the same costume as THE slutty pumpkin, since the real SP had a pumpkin costume on the body and no mask on the head/face, we could actually see her long brown hair from behind. I checked. Episode 1.06. True story.
If this is just some slutty pumpkin, I dunno, she isn’t a particular pumpkin, nor particularly slutty :p

I know that Lilly cant keep a secret but I dont get why she told Barney that Robin had Mosbied him. The plan worked perfectly and then she just told him but it didnt seem natural. Of course they had to do that for the story to continue.
I loved the finale and all the callbacks. A few things though. Someone already mentioned Ted's telling the kids about one of his buildings so he goes back to architecture at some point. Also, I hope they dont turn his class into a guess who of mothers. Dont show any of the women in the class during season 5. I would also imagine that they do not start dating while he is teaching her.
Cant wait for next season
TheLegendaryBS | May 21, 2009 @ 10:58 am
I just saw the episode (I'm French so I have to wait like 3 days…) and all I have to say is…WOW. Really awesome. The Robarn stuff was my favorite, looks like their relationship is going to be legendary and not cliché. More passionate.
As for Ted, it's good to watch him evolve, finally moving on and the "damn if it wasn't the best year of my life" was fabulous.
The end was epic. They all take "the leap". Barney jumping for Robin was beautiful and Ted for a new life was great!!!
If I loved this episode? Yes!! a million times yes!!
JRod37 | May 21, 2009 @ 1:46 pm
Once again your HIMYM colored glasses are clouding your judgment. While this was overall a fantastic episode, RoBarn is forced. There's no way that Robin all of the sudden, after never showing an inkling of being honestly into Barney for anything other than a one-nighter hookup when she was vulnerable is a reach to say the least. What, all of the sudden she has conflicted feelings about him? When/where was that shown? Robin's feelings are forced and weak. I'm sure they'll play it out and eventually we'll never realize that we felt it was forced, but that hasn't happened yet.
anon9631 | May 21, 2009 @ 3:50 pm
I don't know…it seems to me like they've evolved her friendship with Barney really well over the course of the season. She went to him on Shelter Island before she left, they spent a lot of time together when he did her video resume, she helped him with the Murtaugh list (and I'm sure there's a few more examples that I'm not thinking of) It can happen – good friends' feelings can all of the sudden become complicated…sometimes seemingly out of nowhere. True, she hadn't CONSCIOUSLY been thinking of him that way, but when she all of the sudden realized that he had feelings for her, it could very well make her realize that sub-consciously she had feelings too, and just hadn't realized it yet.
JustinDickinson | May 21, 2009 @ 4:00 pm
Well put! I think she'd been getting there as well. Think about the \”I'm sorry but you must bump this\” bit from As Fast As She Can. Was that not exactly something Barney would say? She's been moving toward that, but in classic Robin style, wasn't aware of it. It would've been weirder, and out of character, for her to have some heart-to-heart with Lily or Ted about it.
NCUK | May 21, 2009 @ 4:57 pm
Great Finale almost cried when the sound on my laptop stopped working (thankfully it got fixed) I was just looking around for more HIMYM news as i'm already impatient for series 5 and I came across some trivia that in Something blue the proposal was real. I thought that was really cool.
sorry nothing to do with the finale.
Bruna | May 21, 2009 @ 7:54 pm
I always thought that Robin´s character was kind of lost on tranck on season 3… But that´s really how Robin was supposed to feel when lost a job and a boyfriend that was about to get Married! I always thought was well that Robin and Barney really wouldn´t work out… but I changed my mind on that because of "The Leap"! During season 4 Barney and Robin really got closer as was really well said before! And the way Robin treated that matter is a real ROBIN thing… and just, out of nowhere showing her mixed up feelings.. is a very Robin thing! So Ya! I do´n´t really think we can say NOW, after this finnaly that RoBarn is forced (even though i think they should be togheter just during season 5).
anon9631 | May 21, 2009 @ 8:31 pm
I think that was my favorite part from As Fast as She Can – although there were a few, that's the part that made me laugh the hardest!

About the slutty pumpkin…
We can see in Season 1 episode 6 (Slutty Pumpkin) that the slutty pumpkin costume is totally different from the one seen in that flashback :s
There's a moment that she's shown from her back and it's a giant pumpkin :S

Good grief, due to enormous problems with a) my computer and b) the internet I wans´t able to comment the last episodes, but hell I simply HAVE to comment on this one.
First of all, the HIMYM finale was AWSOME! The last episodes were great, but man, this one? It was so incrdible! I loved everything about it: the goat (though I expected something more dramatic), the BRo storyline, the fact that Lily was back. EVERYTHING! Ted becoming a teacher was a good choice, it seems right and leaves a lot of possibilities open. Barney and Robin deciding to "sort it out later" was sooo in character, I absolutely loved it. And did you see all those call-backs (though, yes, the sluttty pumpkin attended the party on a noght Marshall was dresses as Cher)??? I honestly can´t wait to see the first episode of season 5. Go HIMYM!!!
profx | May 25, 2009 @ 12:36 am
First, seems like my post was lost so…
Great find on that screencap! An now, of shoe fetishes
Marshall was wearing the same pair of shoes on all of his jump attempts except for the Dracula scene. Ted's stunt double was not wearing the same type of shoe. You can see this during the cam focus on the leap.

Did anyone else catch the Ghostbusters reference in this episode?
"It's here, Lily (Ray). It's looking at me."
"What is?"
"The goat (ghost)."
Was that intentional?

Ookay, so season 4`s finale totally rocked my world! I mean – look at how mellow it was (in terms of revelations) and yet it all came together so well! I laughed SO hard at SO many moments! Marshall as a vampire! Mr Goat!! Sven!!! Ehh!!!!
No, seriously, I`m looking forward to Professor Mosby. And NO, Stella is absolutely NOT going to be in the Architecture class!! Not that I don`t like her, it`s just that the idea of not meeting the Mother yet is much better and more realistic.
I`ve also officialy became a top notch Robarn fan, because their scenes were awesome, cool, yet in character! Guys, they just talked about their feelings openly AND made an actual great scene out of it!
And Ted – good for this guy to finally turn his old self! About time I say, about time!
So, yeah, gonna have to rewatch it a few (dozen) times!!

It was ok. It was a decent finale but it feels like ti needed more. A lot happened to TED and I didnt feel this was a amazing wrap up of that.
I still don't like this Barney and Robin thing… it seems really forced. I still never got why all these fans want it? There seems to be so much more they can do with those characters then having then get stuck in a one dimensional plot. But oh well.
I can't wait until next season… still one of the best written shows on TV.

I have to admit, I let out a triumphant YES when it showed him in that classroom at the very end. Right when Stella's hubby brought up the possibility it all clicked for me and I was devistated when he turned it down so quickly. I automatically remember the flashback from seasons ago: "In fact, that ae together means that's it's pronounced encyclopAYdia." Perfect.

Finale was really brilliant, opened a window of hope for both Ted and us viewers. Finally we are going to meet mother of How I Met Your Mother. I didnt like robin and barney kissing scene. Though i like them as pair, waiting for this to happen for long time. And Ted becoming professor got me thinking too about what i am planning for my life.

In this episode Robin is wearing the same necklace that Stella is wearing in the episode 23 (of this season). How weird is that ? Oo

I'm almost sure Ted wont hook up with the mother of his kids in his class.
It makes me think about the No Tomorrow episode and the one with the reference to the Butterfly Effect(I think, you know what I mean). There is a whole build-up to meeting his wife, and you ,,wait for it" a long time, but it doesn't happen.
But I don't care, this show may last dozens of seasons if it were up to me. I LOVE HIMYM.

Is that the Empire State Building lit up in the background in the scene where everyone is taking the leap?
AC Newman Takes The Leap « Idolator: Music News, Reviews, And Gossip | December 17, 2009 @ 12:35 am
[...] Last night was the season finale of How I Met Your Mother, and the show’s protagonist Ted Mosby capped off the worst year of his life by deciding to shed his past identity as an architect who gets browbeaten by washcloth-obsessed goats–a leap that was replicated by Ted and his five friends jumping across their apparently very narrow side street, and on to the tricked-out deck of a neighbor. The song that soundtracked this mass Spider-Man impersonation was AC Newman’s “Prophets,” which appeared on the lead New Pornographer’s most recent solo album, Get Guilty. A live clip of that track after the jump. This has been something of a rough season, what with the Stella and the various tents that the two pregnant female leads have had to wear to hide their conditions, but last night I realized just how much I love this show. Although two things: first, I did think that the good vibes were going to be completely thrown off by the neighbors onto whose deck the five pals leapt coming outside and either calling the police or throwing a big hot-tub-centric party of their own; and second, under-22-minute running times for allegedly half-hour shows are just criminal. I know that networks have to keep their lights on too, but come on. The Leap [CBS.com] AC Newman [Official site] AC Newman, Prophets [YouTube] [Pic via have you met ted?] [...]
