Season 4, Episode 24 Finale: The Leap Preview

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

It’s finally here. Season 4 has come a long way. We’ve all looked forward to the finale and tonight we get to see whether or not Bays and Thomas can deliver on the legend of The Goat, RoBarn, and the yellow umbrella.

I’m confident that this finale will be a good one. I have no idea what’s going to happen, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I also have a feeling we might finally see the payout of a promise Bays made awhile back in regards to a woman from Ted’s past returning. Any guesses who it might be?

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

It’ll also be good to see Lily back. I know I’ve missed her the past few weeks.

What are you guys hoping for? What are you looking forward to? How many sentences can I end with prepositions on?

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

I encourage all of you to jump online tonight and “live blog” the episode together. Leave comments here discussing the show as it plays out. Then I’ll come in and post my recap which will address my own thoughts as well as any discussion that takes place here.

    first.

Awesome. I can't wait. Maybe for this episode, you can do the comparisons of season 1-season 2-season 3 like you used to do. Just do it for all of the finale's.

    Can't wait.
    Jack

  3.  wicktron | May 18, 2009 @ 5:26 pm

    victoria?

  4.  viv | May 18, 2009 @ 5:26 pm

Will definitely try to liveblog. Assuming I'm not completely engrossed by the show…

    this. is. AWESOME!

  5.  Jazzer | May 18, 2009 @ 5:28 pm

Can't wait for Season 5… There will be a season 5, right?

  6.  katiebug | May 18, 2009 @ 5:34 pm

I assumed that it was Stella (in the last episode).

  7.  Carrie Arlen | May 18, 2009 @ 5:38 pm

I thought the person who returned from Ted's past was Stella?!? Was I thinking wrong?

  8.  KJO | May 18, 2009 @ 5:40 pm

I am psyched for the finale! It feels so good to have a finale and not be paranoid about whether it will be the last episode you will ever see. Hey Jazzer, the main cast is signed through an eighth season. That is right isn't it JD?

  9.  Ayah | May 18, 2009 @ 5:45 pm

    I live in Europe, so…
..too bad I can't live-comment the episode with you guys…

About the woman you mentioned from Ted's past my guess is…. The slutty pumpkin?
(but that might be the picture-of-the-roof effect ;)
    Enjoy the episode!

  10.  KCR | May 18, 2009 @ 5:50 pm

Really looking forward to the episode, although since I'm in the UK I won't be seeing it till tomorrow…..so excited!!!

  11.  Another Sarah | May 18, 2009 @ 6:05 pm

Same for me!But I'll stay up and watch the episode as soon as it hits the internet.
The only thing I hate about this season's finale is,that, well,it's the season's finale…=(
Did they already announce when the show will return???

  12.  JustinDickinson | May 18, 2009 @ 6:09 pm

It'll be back in September with everything else.

  13.  TheMix | May 18, 2009 @ 6:22 pm

I thought the same thing last week as I was bringing my new girlfriend through first season. I'd really love for it to be her.

  14.  TheMix | May 18, 2009 @ 6:25 pm

I'll be at the new Terminator movie, so I won't see it live, but that's ok, because my HD antenna blows for CBS anyway. Everything is way too choppy. I'll be downloading it as soon as I get home though.

Here's to hoping no one starts going stupidly ballistic in the comments about the fact that the goat is a different color than the one they mentioned in the other seasons…..OHHH NOOOOO'S!!!

  15.  Diss_slacker | May 18, 2009 @ 7:06 pm

Has anyone here purchased a season pass on itunes? I know it's uber-expensive, but I'm considering it for next season, and I was just wondering at what time does the download become available on a given Monday when a new episode airs?

Can't wait for the finale! What is everyone celebrating on that one picture?! A new job!? An instant love connection that Ted is excited about?!

  16.  JustinDickinson | May 18, 2009 @ 7:16 pm

The season pass episodes become available on Tuesday morning after the episode aires Monday night.

  17.  zepicelli | May 18, 2009 @ 7:29 pm

    -the goat
    -lyli`s return
    -RoBarn
    -something real about the mother

that's all I wanna see tonight. is that too much to ask? x)

  18.  zepicelli | May 18, 2009 @ 7:30 pm

    I meant Lily*

  19.  justine | May 18, 2009 @ 7:31 pm

    i think teds birthday!

  20.  Julee | May 18, 2009 @ 7:46 pm

I don't have a season pass on iTunes, but I download each episode the minute it's available (on iTunes) – because apparently the season pass doesn't always download immediately.
Usually the episodes are on around/by 11am (in the UK) so 6 am EST, but occasionally it'll take much longer for them to appear, or they'll be earlier.

  21.  freddy | May 18, 2009 @ 7:48 pm

any answers to the question: how i met your mother ?

  22.  JustinDickinson | May 18, 2009 @ 7:51 pm

You guys could start buying episodes through the links I post since it'd help the site. Just saying…

  23.  Maggie | May 18, 2009 @ 8:04 pm

I've always thought that Mother might be the Slutty Pumpkin from Season 1.

  24.  Ted Mosby, Architect | May 18, 2009 @ 8:07 pm

first of all… JD u rock… how i met your mother is too good… i hv also started telling my frenz abt this blog… its superb… i live in india so there is no chance of me seeing it live… ive already passed on this show's dvd to abt 20 of my frenz…!! i want to see how barney proposes to robin… its sure to be legen… wait for it… i hope ur not lactose intolerant coz the second half of that word is DARY… LEGENDARY..

  25.  Mike | May 18, 2009 @ 8:13 pm

I wish there wasn't a two hour 24 season finale on tonight, but Ted Mosby > Jack Bauer. My friends and I will be doing drunk Hulu24 tomorrow night instead.

  26.  CourtneyE | May 18, 2009 @ 5:37 pm

I'm on vacation and will absolutely still be live-Tweeting the finale even-so. Important life-things like this don't stop just because I'm on the beach!

For lady from the past, I thought it would be Stella since last year during The Goat Lily mentioned her being there.

  27.  Diss_slacker | May 18, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

Cool – thanks for the precise info. In that case, I think I'll stick with torrenting!

  28.  gisella | May 19, 2009 @ 12:09 am

Waiting anxiously for this episode.. I am from Chile, so I 'll have to wait at least a couple of hours untill I can finally download it… Enjoy the season finale!! (on epis. 22 I couldn't resist and Iread all spoliers before.. Today that's not going to happen.. XDXD

  29.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:29 am

Really? REALLY? You're calling first? Douchey move.

  30.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:29 am

OH MAN. T-minus one minute. So pumped!

  31.  JustinDickinson | May 19, 2009 @ 12:31 am

Come on now. It made me feel like a real blogger :)

  32.  vivien | May 19, 2009 @ 12:32 am

A fine canadian suit…double breasted. Barney is back!!

  33.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:34 am

BAHAHAH it was you? Still lame.

  34.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:34 am

First off – Robin as a suit analogy? Could it get any better?

  35.  Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 12:35 am

I'm calling it right now. Ted takes the teaching job at Columbia University at the end of the episode. That's where he meets the mother. That's why meeting Stella was a big deal.

  36.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:37 am

"I can jump that far" – first made it's appearance in Three Days of Snow!

  37.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:39 am

    BRo is HAPPENING!

  38.  DrSnobgrass | May 19, 2009 @ 12:40 am

So far it's awesome! Callback to "I can jump that far" and Barney and Robin. Wow!

  39.  Kristy | May 19, 2009 @ 12:40 am

    WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT BARNEY AND ROBIN?!?!

  40.  Mariana | May 19, 2009 @ 12:41 am

Gisella, yo tambien soy chilena y nunca he podido bajar los episodios el mismo dia, donde los bajas?
    Saludos!

  41.  Edicus2288i | May 19, 2009 @ 12:41 am

This has been great so far

  42.  redviper | May 19, 2009 @ 12:41 am

    Robin is joking?

  43.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:41 am

Why are you so shocked? It's been coming since last season!!

  44.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:43 am

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  45.  redviper | May 19, 2009 @ 12:49 am

WTF?! Lily is lying for sure.

  46.  vivien | May 19, 2009 @ 12:51 am

Callback to the murder train!!! hahahahhaah the fourskins :)

  47.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:52 am

    Ok, 'The Mosby' is hilarious.

  48.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 12:53 am

Two season finales, two visits to the hospital? With the same murse!

  49.  Amy | May 19, 2009 @ 12:58 am

Oh my gosh oh my gosh… BRO is hilarious

  50.  Kristy | May 19, 2009 @ 12:59 am

Lily is so preggers! I love it! That was a good one.l.. Robin and Barney are soo messed up!

  51.  Edicus2288i | May 19, 2009 @ 12:59 am

Words can not describe what this episode just ment to me. This was great.

  52.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 1:00 am

Ok. Great. Great finale. Would have liked to see BRo played out more, but they basically decided to go for it, right?

  53.  aaron5425 | May 19, 2009 @ 1:00 am

Nice call, assuming you didn't know before!

  54.  Jason | May 19, 2009 @ 1:00 am

Not gonna lie, I was extremely disappointed, a few funny moments, but not enough.

  55.  redviper | May 19, 2009 @ 1:01 am

Ending felt forced. Too much ted talk, not enough Barney/Robin.

  56.  Chrysee | May 19, 2009 @ 1:03 am

A little disappointed. Good Ted stuff at the very end, but he was wasted for most of the episode. I never wanted BRo to happen, so I'm pretty satisfied with how that (didn't) play out.

  57.  Geri | May 19, 2009 @ 1:04 am

Season finale was Legen-wait until next fall when season 5 premiere's-DARY!

    Marshall's halloween costumed rocked!

  58.  aaron5425 | May 19, 2009 @ 1:04 am

All in all that was quite a disappointing finale. We need old Barney back, I thought we had him for a moment, but they killed it. And the columbia bit was also a let down. I really hope that season 5 is written better than this past season, everything that made the show great no longer exists.

  59.  Nussy | May 19, 2009 @ 1:05 am

I the literal acting out of the "will they – won't they" plot device all within a 5 minute span of time.

  60.  Sara | May 19, 2009 @ 1:05 am

Lily's stunt double during the actual "leap" was SO not preggers. Pretty hilarious though.

I thought this was just about perfect, and I loved seeing "New New Ted" in the classroom.

  61.  Amy | May 19, 2009 @ 1:07 am

Agree. This season finale is lacking compared to the last three. Love the Robin/suit analogy though.

Neither am I really fond of how we're meeting the mother.

  62.  jen209 | May 19, 2009 @ 1:08 am

I am underwhelmed. The goat story wasn't really very funny. Barney & Robin turned out like I expected (though I think there will be more about them next season). I liked where Ted was at the end of the episode. And the jumping stuff…just wasn't that great. I think I had too great of expectations for this finale.

    Oh well, still love it.

  63.  MikeH. | May 19, 2009 @ 1:09 am

It didn't seem as epic as most season finales…

Regardless, I enjoyed it. It just felt more like a regular episode. The episode before this felt more like a finale.

  64.  Geri | May 19, 2009 @ 1:09 am

Interesting….as usual my opinion seems to be opposite to the general consensus. Hmmmm……

  65.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 1:09 am

This episode was filmed several months ago, though, so Allyson was much less pregnant.

  66.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 1:09 am

This episode was filmed several months ago, though, so Allyson was much less pregnant.

  67.  Jayme | May 19, 2009 @ 1:12 am

I'm REALLY hoping that's not TRACY. Wouldn't doubt if it was, just getting in from Iowa and all, new to town, most likely for school…. but if it is, it's a good, non pushy introduction to her.

  68.  me2 | May 19, 2009 @ 1:14 am

I laughed SO HARD during the goat fight. XD

  69.  Jayme | May 19, 2009 @ 1:15 am

Which episode was it when guys shouldn't say five word sentences?!?! I loved it!

  70.  John Darc | May 19, 2009 @ 1:18 am

Yeah, I agree with the general "meh" sentiment. Maybe we expected too much. The last two episodes had that "end of season" feel to them, probably because they were the last two written and shot. Maybe it was because this finale was shot months ago, but it felt constrained.

Not "epic" enough, as someone posted above.

  71.  Ryan | May 19, 2009 @ 1:21 am

already scouring for the name of the song as they all jumped… one by one by one by one… any idea what track that was?

  72.  KDS | May 19, 2009 @ 1:21 am

Tracy from the party isn't the Mom. It seems doubtful that she would have also been at the St Patrick's Day party where the mother was also in attendance even though her and Ted did not meet.

It was good to see Lily back. I'm looking forward to seeing Ted in a different job, could change his character a little bit.

  73.  Sara | May 19, 2009 @ 1:24 am

Clarification: For whatever reason, I enjoyed the fact that you could very much tell that it wasn't actually her jumping, and they focused RIGHT on her belly. It was very much in keeping with the other "subtle" ways they've disguised her pregnancy.

  74.  aaron | May 18, 2009 @ 9:30 pm

    Can’t wait to watch

  75.  JMK | May 19, 2009 @ 1:35 am

    "Prophets" by AC Newman

  76.  Leigh | May 19, 2009 @ 1:35 am

Nah, it's May, and she wouldn't be arriving in NYC for school that early. I think that Ted starts his job in September. Tracy was just a 'look, old Barney's back!' example.

  77.  definitedoubt | May 19, 2009 @ 1:36 am

It was good in the sense that they addressed everything that was bugging us all season. That said, though it was all addressed, nothing was really ironed out. I liked that Ted moved to being a professor, I loved the Robin suit analogy.
I guessed that Robin would try 'The Mosby' because of the commercials showing her so out of character (though I referred to it as 'The Ted' in my head for some reason). It annoyed me that they didn't really decide they were just like 'let's relieve sexual tension now and talk about this later.'
In other words they're gonna spend all next season in a weird place. Yuck.
And the goat was definitely underwhelming, despite the fact that the hoof print was pretty great.

By the way, I just might not be remembering correctly but who is Stan? (The guy who beat Ted to the architecture thing.)

  78.  Jayme | May 19, 2009 @ 1:40 am

As soon as I hit "SUBMIT" I thought about that. And it's not like Carter Bays aren't tricky guys. And just like KDS said, she had to be there for St. Patty's day.

  79.  barneyXrobin | May 19, 2009 @ 1:42 am

Loved it. Season 5 is so far away.

  80.  Ryan | May 19, 2009 @ 1:49 am

    thank you very much JMK.

  81.  jen209 | May 19, 2009 @ 1:49 am

I think my favorite thing I got out of the episode was the song they played at the end. Prophets by A.C. Newman. I'm at least happy with my iTunes purchase…

  82.  JMK | May 19, 2009 @ 1:55 am

It's Sven (not Stan) from the "Wooo" episode

  83.  me2 | May 19, 2009 @ 2:01 am

"By the way, I just might not be remembering correctly but who is Stan? (The guy who beat Ted to the architecture thing.) "

It was Sven the architecture team that was going to build the GNB building to look like a dinosaur. Ted hates those guys.

  84.  Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 2:11 am

I don't remember when exactly we were told that ted would meet "someone from his past," but it could have also been Karen.

  85.  definitedoubt | May 19, 2009 @ 2:14 am

OH. Damn. That's why I was confused. I heard Stan so all that came up in my mind was the big black guy. My b.

  86.  Jeremy | May 19, 2009 @ 2:27 am

I'm sorry, but after seeing "Right Time, Right Place" and "As Fast As She Can" back to back, my expectations were very high for the season finale…..and it was pretty non-exciting.

The two previous episodes were INCREDIBLE, and this one lacked any real substance. Barney and Robin….big whoop. That wasn't that great. The goat….wasn't that great. They played it up too much in previous seasons, and the expectations were too high for it. Tracy? Not connected to Ted whatsoever, so that theory can be thrown out the window (if she's just getting to New York, she couldn't have been at the St. Patty's day party–so she can't be the mother….plus it's May, I doubt she'd get to NY for classes in May (for those assuming somehow she's connected to Ted at all with the new teaching job.))

Overall, the previous two episodes were MUCH better than the finale. Lastly, they spent way too much time on Marshall jumping/not jumping. I expected more….oh well. Can't wait for Season 5!

  87.  Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 2:31 am

I loved the way these last 3 episodes did a great job of bringing closure to this past season while setting up the 5th season. The Barney/Robin thing was perfect for Barney and Robin. It wouldn't have felt right if Barney had done something big and romantic like trying to make it rain. That's not who Barney is and it would have felt right if they tried to force some Mosby-ish romantic gesture into the Barney/Robin thing. I look forward to them developing this in the next season. I love that Ted is teaching at Columbia. They've made jokes about how he enjoys talking about architecture, like in The Murtaugh List, when Teds reward for winning the bet would have been giving a lecture about architecture. When Tony mentioned the teaching job last week, I thought it totally made sense for Ted to take the job. I'm looking forward to next season.

  88.  NoOneKnows | May 19, 2009 @ 3:17 am

This is was like a roller coaster, with it's ups and downs, and I must say this ending is kind of like the "meh" and not because of being freakishly tall. I don't know, maybe I was expecting too much for a finale of this season… As for Ted being a professor, I don't know, didn't the old Ted say he designed a building that actually was built? It's like Barneys afraid of cars that apparently went away in some point (maybe I'm wrong and I don't remember) and he actually drives an Italian car.. Hope the next season to be better (I used to laugh too much with this show, and I kinda miss laughing like that xD )

  89.  NoOneKnows | May 19, 2009 @ 3:19 am

Sorry I meant "This season has been like a roller coaster"

  90.  Diana | May 19, 2009 @ 3:37 am

Everything was fine, except for the end. I'm incredibly creeped out by the idea that "Professor Mosby" would date one of his students. Anticlimactic and wholly inappropriate.

  91.  Jeremy | May 19, 2009 @ 3:47 am

Why? There's many people in college who didn't go to college straight from high school. It's not that uncommon to see someone in their late 20's-early 30's in college…..

  92.  gisella | May 19, 2009 @ 3:47 am

    Saludos!!!

  93.  Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 3:49 am

Ted designed the bank in Spokane. His design replaced Druthers design in season 2.

  94.  Mike | May 19, 2009 @ 3:52 am

There are tons of ways they could pull that off without being creepy. I have enough faith in Bays and Thomas that they wont have Proffessor Mosby charming his way into the pants of young, impressionable college freshmen,

  95.  JustinDickinson | May 19, 2009 @ 3:53 am

It wasn't me but it validated me

  96.  Diana | May 19, 2009 @ 4:01 am

She doesn't need to be young for it to be creepy. Student/teacher relationships are inappropriate at any age, IMO.

There were so many better ways for him to met someone, why pick something that smacks of sexual harassment from the word go?

  97.  BGeo | May 19, 2009 @ 4:10 am

I liked this episode but I'll wait to put my full two cents in until after JD posts the discussion.

For a previous writter, it was Sven, the swedish collective from "The Fight", not Stan.

Pretty Sure Carter and Craig were on to us, and Tracey was meant to throw us off

  98.  NoOneKnows | May 19, 2009 @ 4:28 am

Can't she just not be a student? There are many ways of making her another teacher for example…. and I think he probably won't meet her at class (just like the "she was in that party" thing), she even could have been in that class for that day (one can even assume that was his first day as teacher).

  99.  NoOneKnows | May 19, 2009 @ 4:29 am

Yep, I forgot that… sorry. But I still don't remember how Barney got rid of his panic for driving cars.

  100.  cupcake | May 19, 2009 @ 4:29 am

Who's to say she's a freshman, or even an undergrad? There are plenty of us who went to school in our late 20s/early 30s; and plenty of young professors teaching graduate-level courses. They would never have Ted hitting on 18-year olds. Leave that to Barney :)

  101.  gisella | May 19, 2009 @ 4:33 am

    Check out this interview: http://sepinwall.blogspot.com/2009/05/how-i-met-y...
Carter specifically says "The mother is in the classroom," That pretty much leaves it wide open to students, other teachers, random people sitting in on the class. I'm sure they'll find a reasonable way for him to meet the mother.

  103.  Joanne | May 24, 2009 @ 6:46 pm

Does anyone know the song that was played at the end of the episode?

  104.  Allison | May 24, 2009 @ 7:04 pm

Anybody knows the name of the song at the beginning and the end of "The Leap", I really liked it!

  105.  JustinDickinson | May 24, 2009 @ 7:25 pm
