Season 5, Episode 3: Robin 101 Preview
Placeholder till the recap is up. Enjoy!
- Robin thinks (understandably) that Barney is cheating on her, but in fact he’s betraying her and violating her trust in a much more devious way: he’s taking classes in “Robin 101″ from her ex-boyfriend, Ted, and Barney is proving to be a very apt pupil
- Barney may or may not address himself as “Barack Obama Junior”

weakest ep so far this season for me
not too many funy jokes (except maybe the "thumbs up"), marshall's barrel-obsession was unbelievable and a little lame and i don't like how they've handled the whole barney/robin thing so far. i thought they were gonna drag the whole "are they dating, hanging out, ..?" thing out a little more, would've been fine with me. don't think barney could change his ways just like that. i kind of would've liked to see the two of them figuring out what's what and maybe even dating others on the side for a couple of eps, would've made the whole thing more belivable for those two characters, i think, cause both of them were dating around a lot. i don't think it's a good idea to force them into the whole boyfriend/girlfriend thing this early.
and i didn't like a lot of the stuff ted taught barney about robin, like the hunger thing. wouldn't we have seen that by now if robin were always falling asleep/laughing uncontrollably when she's hungry? doesn't quite fit in with the show's otherwise mostly great continuity. the asian student seemed somehow forced. kind of a stale joke. i don't know what it was but nothing about this episode seemed to fit. is it just me?
plus, lily had soo little to do this episode, hope they give her a storyline soon (and not one of those dirty or mean lily storylines like in the last two episodes)
what i liked: as mentioned the "thumbs up" and the stealing of the textbook in the end, cause that's just one of those things you know the writers are gonna pick up on in a later episode

A really lame episode in my opinion. I'm starting to get worried about the rest of the season… Have any of the writers changed? This can't all be attributable to the Barnman & Robin relationship.

I disagree, i think this episode was awesome. I think it is great that the writers are developing the characters, because in real life people do change, and if they were to stay the same, then the show would end up like two and a half men. Think of it as a new way to experience funny (><).
the asian student joke was also a little stale for me though. However, for me, overall the episode was really funny. I loved barney and teds synchronized twitch reactions, very funny.

Doesn't Barney know how to speak Japenese? I suppose maybe Shin Ha could have been Chinese…
I like seeing Ted develop as a teacher, and Barney develop as a boyfriend. It makes sense that Robyn falls asleep when she's hungry – because then she eats ribs when she's asleep! Ted was very right when he says that when you're dating someone, you collect all this knowledge about them, and then when you break up, you have no use for all the stuff you were storing in your head. Why not pass it on to someone who could use it?
It would be really funny if the person that took Barney's notebook at the end turned into a stalker – because you know Robyn would bust a cap on his @ss for stalking her!

i am all for barney and robin but i dont think they are doing it right. there are so many different new ways they could have gone with it, but they are just going down the usual boyfriend and girlfriend thing. but tonight the problem wasnt only them, it was everything really, the jokes felt forced and the interactions between all the characters seemed a bit off. the barrel thing was simply stupid. and the acting! even the acting, which i think is one of the best things on the show, was bad…. didnt it feel that everyone was over-acting? it reminded me of "the stinsons" a little bit, too sitcomy.
the only thing that got a laugh outta me was the photo of robin laughing at a parking meter. its silly but it was funny.
im not sure the problem is barney and robin, their interaction at the end was sweet and believable, maybe it would have been best to see them trying to work things out, than having them be a couple already having fights like regular couples over jealousy and stuff.
i wish there were more group stories.

This was a weak episode story-wise, but laugh-wise it was a strong Robin episode. 1) Robin laughing at the parking meter, 2) Robin asleep on a cab, 3) Robin talking about fancy penguins. Genius.
Devil's advocate, the past two season's third eps have both been weak. I wish they weren't rushing through RoBarn, but they're obviously going somewhere with it or they wouldn't be going so fast. I guess we'll see. I remain a proud supporter of the BRo movement.

Barney speaks Korean.
I thought the same thing about the person who stole the book- I was positive that was going to be the ending. They might bring it back. I did like that that got stolen while nobody wanted the barrel.

I loved the part about the Bermuda triangle because that's exactly how Provo, my old college town was. You never had to truck anything to the dump- just leave it outside for a few hours at night. A barrel would have been taken in no time!

I loved the episode… But I'll wait more responses to say an overview.. jkjejej..
And I also love Ted as a teacher,

'Bowl…bowl….bowl' got me giggling right at the start. I thought it was a great episode, and I loved that Ted was teaching Barney the obscure facts. Barney would already know the basics. Robin's hunger tendencies were hilarious!
I also think that they're rushing the BRo thing a bit, but it kind of makes sense. Barney said that he never wanted the trouble of a girlfriend before, but now he does – so it makes sense that he's trying hard to change. Robin seemed more like herself this episode, and I think that the two play off of each other really well. I can't wait to see more episodes of this season, but I'm worried about how the upcoming episode about Robin's citizenship will play out (she can't give up her Canadian citizenship!! What would the writers do without that goldmine? And…I'm Canadian too.)

This episode was probably the weakest comedy-wise, but also the strongest character-wise.
I don't have time to go into too much detail, but it invariably shows the relationships between all of the characters VERY well. I might also add that it holds out a bit of hope for Ted and Robin (though that's mostly just me) in that it shows how much he really cares for not just her, but really anyone that he comes in contact with that shows a modicum of respect in return. Not to mention, ahem, this shows Robin in Ted's class. Ya, ya, relax….I don't need the nay-sayers….I just want to fantasize for a minute. In any case this episode really does a wonderful job of bringing the dynamics between all of the characters together. We normally only see the relationship between 2 or 3 characters, but I think this one is right up there with Slapsgiving in regard to how everyone is brought together and work through a problem within the group.
Just a thought,
Jason

Okay it's so odd that there are so few people commenting about this episode because I expected a lot of them giving it a huggee thumbs down (the actual thumbs down, haha) but anyway a few things I wanna mention..
Didn't think it was a top-notch episode or one we're gonna be talking about much in the future, but I did really really like a few things like six words: Robin-I'm-proud-of-you-aye got me laughing so hard cos I didn't expect that last word. Also liked the thumbs down/up. The Dead Poets Society thing was kiinnnd of a cliche so didn't think it was anything brilliant but Ted and Barney make a really good teacher-student pair. The barrel is a no-go. Period. Marshall and Lily need more relevance in this show!! Also in the episode Best Burger In New York Robin was starving and she didn't do either of the ones mentioned by Ted (laugh or fall asleep). I wish they'd given her a more interesting and new characteristic = /
Btw, Barney CAN speak Korean (Miracles) and Mandarin (Atlantic City), and the Shinya guy was Japanese so that explains why he didn't understand him. I have nothing bad to say about Barney though, the man is pure love when he's in love.

Where did all the comments go? Why have things gone wonky?

I turned off IntenseDebate for the time being so the comments might look a little screwy. Not sure why they aren’t displaying. Pardon the interruption.

I thought it was another funny episode. It made me laugh again and again.
danield6 | October 6, 2009 @ 12:41 pm
i guess the season premiere episode set the bar high that’s why a lot of people see this one as lacking. but it isn’t anywhere near as horrible though, it’s still a nice one.
BSMOOTH | October 6, 2009 @ 1:17 pm
Hmmm….says there are 11 comments on the main page, but I don't see any here. Well here's to hoping this blurb of mine doesn't disappear after posting. This was an all around great episode (although I'm starting to feel like Marshall and Lily are just being used as filler so far this season, I'm slightly worried about where the writers can go with fresh ideas for them).
Some favorite moments:
Bowl…bowl….bowl
Cover Hog!!!
"I've gotta find a way to reach this kid!"
"When you see that face, don't take a picture of it, because she will punch you, and you will cry…for the third time… that night."
Overall, a solid episode in developing the BaRobin (still like RoBarn better) angle. My biggest laugh came from when Robin stormed into the classroom and Ted pointed out the flared nostril ridges and wide unblinking eyes. Gotta love teacher Ted.
Ranelle | October 6, 2009 @ 1:33 pm
I liked the episode!! …I thought it was *much better* than last week. You know, I’m a huge fan of NPH and Barney… and I do like the idea of Robin and Barney together, but I think Robin and Ted have more chemistry. I don’t know, it’s just strange that Robin complains about Barney to Ted… Ted teaches Barney about Robin… I don’t know, it just feels like they are leading things towards Robin being the mother.
I guess I will have to see where Robin and Barney go… but I’m still having a hard time believing that Robin will be ok with Barney’s past and his antics.
With that said, Barney trying (3 times!) to leave the bedroom out the window at night was hilarious! It was very much a character episode, but I love those! I still thought it was funny too.
Jazzer | October 6, 2009 @ 1:41 pm
This ep was AWESOME! Not the best ever, but good enough, and more then that. A bit better then the one week earlier.
Can’t wait for the next one. =] Long live HIMYM.
Deerfield | October 6, 2009 @ 2:59 pm
I thought the episode was good but I need more Lily and Marshall. At least we got some much needed Robin after last week’s show.
Anna | October 6, 2009 @ 3:08 pm
It was a good episode, but at the same time I agree with a lot of you that think that they’re rushing the Barney/Robin-love. One thing I loved was Barney’s attention span during Ted’s lesson! “Can we have class outside?!”
Hilarious.
Vicky | October 6, 2009 @ 5:13 pm
I don’t know if you have mentioned that before but I also loved the part where Barney was asking for the class outside like three or four times… It made me laugh soooo much
I thought this ep was okay… not the best but there were worse eps so it’s still AWESOME!
Chelsea | October 6, 2009 @ 5:19 pm
I don’t know why so many people were disappointed in this show. I was happy to see Marshall having more of the funny moments. And now officially call the curb outside of our house as the Bermuda triangle the same thing happens for us too. I do agree that this was more of a touching episode than a funny one, but the writers are working on setting up the relationship for Robin & Barney. Now hopefully Ted will be the mom soon then everyone will be with someone

they should have included “swarley” in the list of names at the very beginning.

the actor who was the role of SHIN_YA is a funny cable TV comedy show asian actor “KAZ” on tim and eric and other comedy shows.
he is very funny , but the role he was doing for this show wasnt using his character well….they should have known his special comedy act to develop thier idea….
but i want to see KAZ again on the show.
he is very funny
