Season 5, Episode 6: Bagpipes Recap

Well, not yet, but soon! Hark, I am not dead. Just taking a little break from the social Internets while we ramp up a big project at work. I’m going to bed but will watch tonight’s episode tomorrow and resume my normal posting schedule. Thanks for your patience, loyal readers know I do this from time to time.

And for those who sent me kind words of encouragement to look past the fighting in the comments: I keep a big smile on the entire time. I’d never keep this (or any) web site running if kerfuffles like that gave me pause. I was just old-fashioned, boring, busy with work. Keep up the comments, even if I disagree!

I will write a recap from last week but here are my bullet-point thoughts:

  • I laughed a lot, which means the episode did its job
  • Lily is sort of sucking this year but she’s a new mom and while I don’t think that’s a universal get-out-of-jail-free card I also have no idea what kind of pressure it is so I’ll cut her some slack and chalk it up to Future Ted remembering her as particularly insufferable during this part of his story telling.
  • I want some Tantrum

See you tomorrow kids!

    TANTRUM!!!

  2.  Mark | November 3, 2009 @ 2:44 am

First time I’ve ever commented, just had to say that this is my favorite episode of the season. The writing was charming and Marshall’s lines when he’s telling Barney the ‘rook’ about how good he is at relationships had me laughing out loud.
Hope to see your thoughts about it soon JT

  3.  katie90 | November 3, 2009 @ 3:41 am

liked this one, better than the last two but certainly no all-time-high. loved marshall in this ep, he seems to be geeting back to normal (even lily was a liiittle more normal though probably just because she was given little to do).

barney convincing marshall of his stupid theory was awesome, as was robin teling the story of their one and only fight about who’s more awesome. and lily’s shining impression..haha..”PLEASE don’t do that”…

was it me or was the laugh track REALLY annoying? can’t remember any episode from this or any other sitcom that had me as annoyed at the over-the-top laughing in not-even-funny-moments as this one. the one time i really had to laugh out loud was t-mos. “somebody HAD to put an end to that!”

also, loved that slap bet was back and that ted just HAD to slap him although he felt so sorry for marshall. i also liked romance-barney and -robin, those two actually finally had some chemistry while being so annoyingly in love ;) what i didn’t like about robin and barney was that stupid “i’m gonna need you in some kind of crouched position”-line. thought that was too degrading. though she likes the sexual part of the relationship, robin’s not the kind of skank barney could just pull a line like that on.

the bagpiping..well, i don’t know. i used to love ted’s censoring the story for the kids but lately thay’ve gone a little overboard with it.

Downloading the ep, since SE05 isn’t airing here. Hope it will be awesome! =] TANTRUM!!!!

  5.  High Hoper | November 3, 2009 @ 4:39 am

Hi JD! We regulars know this is usual, but thanks for remembering…

I liked the episode. Really is has not been the strongest one this season so far, but some things were really good.

I worry how people will feel next week when they know something at the end of the episode…

By the way, only 6 episodes to the 100th ;)

Oh, I forgot: Lily is getting annoying this season. Most annoying Lily ever. Don’t know if it’s because she’s a mom or something, but I do not really like it at all this season (except for a couple scenes I liked).

And, oh my god, I want to discuss this with everyone… Don’t you think Robin is getting dumber and dumber? She’s not the Robin everyone fell in love with in first season. My god, she’s getting dumber, handles the emotional stuff really bad, and seems like having lost the path of her life… Really needed the writers to keep er so stupid since Ted and she broke up?

  6.  Jazzer | November 3, 2009 @ 6:08 am

^ I loveeed the episode. It’s awesome. I laughed at every spot where I should’ve, and it made my day. Not the best ever, but certanly an awesome episode.

I really don’t mind Lily, she fun to watch in my opinion, and didn’t get anoying. Yes, she did get boring last ep when she went on the Chicago trip, but other then that, nothing.

Oh and yeah, Robin is really getting stupid. But I guess that’s the side-effect when you date Barney Stinson. =] You get awesome and stupid all at the same time.

Keep up the good work JD.

  7.  Ayah | November 3, 2009 @ 9:32 am

    I really enjoyed the episode!
A pretty simple storyline, but a lot of dialogs and callbacks (“sandwiches/bagpipes” “slap bet”) I like this kind of episode, very refreshing.

Robin, stupid? Well, she’s been a woo, she slept with the naked man… I think she has her moments! But she might be in the shadow of Barney’s charisma.
Plus I think as Ted tells the story, she was nearly perfect around end of season 1 begining of season 2 (= the time she and Ted were together or when the narrator was the most in love with her) Doesn’t it makes sense?

By the way JD, enjoy your web-holiday, sometimes you have to focus on the job and keeping up blogs must be time consuming!! Take your time!

  8.  Trevormac98 | November 3, 2009 @ 10:46 am

Ok, i must have missed something, what happens at the end of next weeks episode?

This episode was amazing. Loved Marshall. Lily is fantastic and what a surprise when it was the old people playing bagpipes.

  9.  Starney Binson | November 3, 2009 @ 12:05 pm

Decently solid episode, especially in comparison to the horrible past few episodes.

It seems that Barney and Robin are almost over, which is a step in the right direction. Marshall became funny again, while Lily couldn’t be annoying since she didn’t have too many lines.

    And good use of throwbacks.

  10.  Danielle | November 3, 2009 @ 12:14 pm

It makes me sad to think I seem to be the only one who does not find lily annoying at all.
I love Lily and Alyson Hannigan is awesome.

Now Robin on the other hand..she is becoming to much like the female barney and she was never that bad.

  11.  Trevormac98 | November 3, 2009 @ 1:05 pm

    Starney Binson,

What examples do you have that back your thesis that Robin and Barney are almost done? If anything the show seemed to give insight that they are now into that “next phase” but unlike Marshall and Lily, they will enjoy this stage as only Robin and Barney can.

  12.  anr | November 3, 2009 @ 1:50 pm

Best episode this season! Loved it. FINALLY a good Marshall story line. And I loved seeing Barney and Robin avoid fighting!

  13.  Clyde | November 3, 2009 @ 2:08 pm

    I’m back!

    Bagpipes = sex? Whatever.

Other than that, this was a step it the right direction. I feel like the writers still owe me though.

  14.  Clyde | November 3, 2009 @ 2:10 pm

    I’m back!

    Bagpipes = sex? Whatever.
Other than that, this episode was a step in the right direction. They owe me soooo much more though.

  15.  Gonz | November 3, 2009 @ 2:16 pm

Well, I thought it was a pretty darn good episode.

Oh, let me say a big whew! I started following this site around the middle of season 3, but I just realized how much I like this site when I didn’t get my weekly opinions from JD. Thanks for all you do!

Ok, back to the episode. I liked that they were giving Ted more lines since episode 5, (TANTRUM!) and I’m glad they kept this going. Although I do feel like he’s still being left out a little, fifth wheel and all. I though Barney handled that role better.

Barney convincing Marshall was really funny, (Remember the earring incident of 2003!), and I loved seeing the chemistry of all three of the guys again.

Okay, since everybody’s talking about it, I won’t feel mean. Hannigon is a great actress, and so is Smulders. I just don’t like the character of Lily. I know a bunch of you guys do, and JD too. But I don’t see how she fits in. She isn’t very sensible, and she doesn’t really bring anything to the group. All I can remember is her “I have to relate everything to my kindergarten teaching methods”. And it gets old. Example: Baseball incident with Ted’s boss, breaking up Ted’s past relationships, and even the “Lets go to Chicago and interfere on Ted and Marshall’s tradition”. She’s just to…nosy. And she doesn’t ever admit she’s wrong when she does these. She needs to be called out on these.

And I think the character of Robin is seeming pretty sarcastic and critical. I know she’s always been that way, but much more so now that shes with Barney. I don’t really like it. I liked when she was more calm while she was with Ted. I don’t know, she seems kinda arrogant? Anyone else noticed this?

Oh, and Ted REALLY needs to date someone soon. He’s really just hanging around lately.

    Slap Bet. Awe-Some!

Random note: Why did Robin and Ted have that “back-up spouse” thing when Lily made that dinner for Ted? Do we have any theories?

  16.  Ranelle | November 3, 2009 @ 2:25 pm

Definitely the best episode of the season. Better acting than the premiere (felt more like the characters I know, less over the top.) After the first 5 minutes, I thought “it’s back.” Funny and charming. yay!

Loved everything… Especially the call-backs and the censoring of the story. And I finally felt more of the Robin/Barney chemistry. They had some funny stuff… loved how they avoid fights, but it was so obvious it would (and may still) come to bite them in the ass.
I liked that every character had a part in the story… including Marshall and Ted. Finally!! I liked the quadrupling of Marshal and Lily during the fight and the make-up kiss lol.
I also enjoyed how they brought things full circle with the downstairs neighbors… Great job writers! Let’s keep this going :)

  17.  T.I.P. | November 3, 2009 @ 2:25 pm

I’m glad to read that I’m not the only one who thinks this is the best episode of the season so far.
    I simply loved it!
I think I’m gonna watch it a second time now. :D

  18.  purple giraffe | November 3, 2009 @ 2:40 pm

I agree with most that this was the best episode this season. I liked that Marshall had a real storyline because until now he hadnt gotten to do a lot this season. I dont understand why everybody in the comments has been so hard on this season so far. I dont find Marshall and Lily nearly as annoying as everyone else seems to. Sure theyre pretty lame but the writers are aware of this and use it as a joke in the show. So far I think every episode this season has been solid but none had really wowed me until tonight. Keep up the good work writers!

  19.  Jeremiah Danials | November 3, 2009 @ 3:01 pm

When I heard Slap-Bet, I actually thought that Barney was gonna get the 4th slap. When he didn’t, I felt almost cheated! When’s it coming?

  20.  Toby | November 3, 2009 @ 5:08 pm

One of the best episodes of the season!!!! I couldn’t stop laughing. I personally love Barney and Robin fighting. I don’t know why some of you don’t think they have chemistry. I think the mark of good chemistry is how well two people can fight, and boy can they fight!

  21.  High Hoper | November 3, 2009 @ 5:14 pm

    #19

    SPOILER ALERT

    Pretty soon ;)

  22.  Jazzer | November 3, 2009 @ 5:36 pm

^ Barney gets back to being single again? =]

  23.  Starney Binson | November 3, 2009 @ 6:23 pm

No, he’s talking about Barney getting slapped.

And, hey, Clyde is back. How lucky.

  24.  High Hoper | November 3, 2009 @ 6:33 pm

    #22 & 23

    SPOILER ALERT

yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah (said like barney turning head down… it goes deeper)

  25.  Jazzer | November 3, 2009 @ 6:45 pm

Oh, awesome non the less. =D Loved the slap bet return in this ep, gonna implement the whole thing in my life. xD

  26.  Toby | November 3, 2009 @ 6:54 pm

The slap bet should be a thing! That would be so much fun (unless I was the one actually getting slapped)

  27.  KJO | November 3, 2009 @ 7:41 pm

    This episode was bagpipin’ good!

  28.  BGeo | November 3, 2009 @ 9:41 pm

As a fan of himym, how could you not like this episode?

It was the himym of old, with callbacks, slap bets, and over all hilarity. marshall is my favourite character, although he has been a little hard to watch of late, but was really good in this episode (“call me crazy”).

How good was the slap bet? More to come….?

Can’t wait to hear from JD

  29.  Tash | November 4, 2009 @ 1:55 am

I liked this episode the best this season…though I still feel like it’s lacking a little. I’m still not a fan of Lily either, though I felt like she was a little better this episode.

I think I’m going to have to watch it again to really know how I felt about it. Can’t wait for your review JD!!! Hurry up and post it ;P

Also, I’m really not looking forward to the next few episodes, but I have a feeling anything we’re hearing is only half-truth…think the writers are being sneaky *Insert shifty eyes here*

  30.  CP | November 4, 2009 @ 2:37 am

So is this the beginning of the end for Barney and Robin?

If so, thank god. Their relationship sux.

  31.  Jazzer | November 4, 2009 @ 4:26 am

^ How can it be the end? It just started, and they’re getting more serious, if you saw the end of the episode.

  32.  Ayah | November 4, 2009 @ 7:46 am

Don’t you think the Ted/Marshall slap looks cute and soft in comparaison with Marshall/Barney Huuuuuge slaps? (at one point I also thought that Barney was going to get slaped, it’s part of the 5 slaps deal… we always except slaps occuring!)

  33.  Toby | November 4, 2009 @ 12:19 pm

    Tash,

I am not looking forward to the next few episodes either, but I agree that we don’t really know the full picture yet and need to be patient!

I don’t understand why people don’t think Barney and Robin are good together? Is it really just because people want Barney to be single or is it other stuff?

  34.  Raiger | November 4, 2009 @ 1:53 pm

Loved this episode! Finally they gave Marshall something worthwhile and he was great when he tried to put Barney in his place as relationship novice. And it was nice to have a mini slap bet to tide us over.
I liked Ted’s detective work, too, but I wish they had used it as a call back to The Mosby Boys. They cracked a lot of big cases, you know?

  35.  katie90 | November 4, 2009 @ 1:59 pm

you mean like the one about the missing retainer? :D

  36.  katie90 | November 4, 2009 @ 2:03 pm

and @ toby: in my case, i don’t think they have all that much chemistry (this ep was the first one in which i kind of liked those two) and i don’t like how they’re dragging down robin to be a perfect fit to barney. she used to be really smart and awesome and they’re kind of dumbing and ho’-ing her down for him (been saying that since season 4 when the all of a sudden started letting her sleep with guys for no reason other than that they were THERE (TJ) or already naked (Mitch, the naked guy)). don’t know if those are the reasons other people would state, though, most people seem to think barney’s losing himself. i don’t think that’s it, cause there’s always been so much more to barney than just his one-night-stands. still, that seems to be why people hate them as a couple

  37.  Toby | November 4, 2009 @ 2:09 pm

I agree with you katie that there is way more to Barney than his womanizing! I think some of his funniest moments had nothing to do with him picking up women.

I always thought they had great chemistry together and it came out when they were just having fun together or whatever. I didn’t like it when they made them all angsty about the relationship or whatever. That is why I liked this episode so much, I thought the fighting was phenomenal and I loved their fake cutsieness because it was so obviously fake!

I don’t get the feeling they are dumbing her down or whatever for Barney because I always thought they were good together, but you are right she has been kind of sl**ty lately. You meant Pj right? I don’t remember a TJ

  38.  High Hoper | November 4, 2009 @ 7:32 pm

Although I don’t share the same ideas, I really like the theory someone wrote before that is something like this:

“When Ted pursued Robin, she was almost the perfect woman. Now that they’re not together, future Ted tells the story of her not being as perfect as she was” -> That explains the dumbasery of Robin nowadays (FOR ME)

  39.  Toby | November 4, 2009 @ 7:41 pm

Yeah, that does make sense. After all this whole show is being told through Ted’s eyes

  40.  ashlee | November 4, 2009 @ 8:51 pm

Just now on Jeopardy, the category was T.V. shows and the very last question in the category came up, and I randomly said, “How I Met Your Mother!” And it was a Daily Double and the clue was: how I became acquainted with the mother of my children, or something like that and I shouted HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER!!!! It was legendary!!

  41.  ev. mosby | November 4, 2009 @ 10:01 pm

I’m glad the comments are more positive this time! I think each time there’s a not-so-good episode everyone gets a little cranky and a little meaner and it’s just not creating a nice aura for the site. I thought this week’s episode was really funny from start to finish. Laughed out loud first few minutes into the show the moment I heard the bagpipes. My favourite parts were actually small and very short scenes of interaction between the characters – like Ted slapping Marshall (he actually did it kinda mildly which is the sort of guy Ted is) and the entire BRo sequence with the air kissing and the air butt smacking. Brilliant.

Now it’s time to let us in into Ted’s life as a professor at the university! And less couple-y stuff for the couples I hope. Let’s mix the group up please!

  42.  Toby | November 4, 2009 @ 10:10 pm

I agree! I am getting sick of the writers focusing so much on the couples.

  43.  katie90 | November 5, 2009 @ 3:07 am

yes, PJ, that’s right :D i knew there was something wrong about ‘TJ’, lol. agree on the robin/barney thing, toby, i loved the fighting (it seemed so much more ‘them’ then the are we/aren’t we-relationship wondering or barney’s extreme move of flying to canada to get robin) and the fakeness. somehow made them MUCH more believable as a couple to me. so..what can we expect? you guys think the writers are actually making them more believable and likeable as a couple just to have them break up?

also, on a totally different note, i miss the kids! yeah, i know the only have limited material of them reacting cause they’ve gotten too old now but they made it work in season 2 (and 3? don’t remember) when they always just showed them listening but never really reacting/commenting. they could totally introduce that again. just think it’s weird for the kids NEVER to show up anymore, especially for new watchers, since the kids are bound to be back in the ep where he finally says ‘..and THAT’S how i met your mother’. not that that’s going to be happening anytime soon ;)

  44.  Fabio | November 5, 2009 @ 7:18 am

Totally agree with Katie90… that Barney line was rather degrating towards robin…

As for the kids, i also miss them, even though i understand they only have limited footage of them…

Is it just me, or is the show losing its focus on the mother? I mean….every story so far had something to do with the process of meeting her, but it sort of doesnt anymore…i don’t know… I still love the show, it’s still funny…but i miss the links between episodes/stories…

On this week’s episode, I also think that it is weird that Robin now needs a “Relationship for dummies” book and take advice from LAME to solve her problems, while when she was dating Ted, she handled her disputes amazingly. She used to be so witty and clever and – i don’t know – different from other women. Now she doesnt seem so Robin-Scherbatsky-like.

Hope to read your insights soon JD.

    THANKS,

    Fabio.

  45.  Toby | November 5, 2009 @ 8:55 am

RIght, kids…………. Forgot about them! J/k but you are right we haven’t seen much of them. I liked it in the begining when the kids would have reactions, but seeing as how they are all grown up I don’t think we will see that anymore :( .

Katie, I don’t know what the writers are up to, but I have never really understood their deviousness so I guess its just wait and see. I do agree with you that the whole are they or aren’t they a couple was ridiculous and when they said they were going to start lying I was so excited!! It was fun to finally see them lying and being themselves instead of being a boring couple. However, I did like him flying to Toronto and his speech at TIm Horton’s was just so Barney like

  46.  High Hoper | November 5, 2009 @ 11:05 am

    Just 2 things:

    1) I miss the kids.

    2) I laughed so hard at the first bagpipes that I needed to stop playback on VLC.

    LOL

  47.  Toby | November 5, 2009 @ 11:06 am

I was thinking about it, and a lot of things are missing this season. I could go for a suit up or a legendairy as well.

  48.  Trevormac98 | November 5, 2009 @ 11:13 am

If you miss the kids, you can see Ted’s son in Wizards of Waverly place on Disney. My four year old just loves this show. The daughter is in some movies but not nearly making the splash that Ted’s son did.

  49.  katie90 | November 5, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

haha, thanks trevor, i think we just want to see them on the show ;)
yeah, suit up/legendary.. right, barney’s kind of been too busy with the relationship drama to spout some of his favourite lines. but the way i see it, at least we kind of got one of his theories this past episode. i mean, it was no vicky-mendoza-diagonal or lemon law, but at least he planted that stupid idea to confront lily about the dishes in marshall’s head :)

  50.  Vincent LaGuardia Gamini (The First) | November 5, 2009 @ 3:05 pm

Just a note: EW’s Michael Ausiello is reporting that CBS ordered an extra two episodes of HIMYM for this season. Upping it from 22 to 24.

  51.  Jazzer | November 5, 2009 @ 7:27 pm

I miss old Barney… But seriously, who doesn’t? As ketie said, what ever happened to “Legen… wait for it… And I hope you’re not lactose-intolerant ‘couse the second half of that word is: DARY!”, or “Suit up!”, or mainly any humoristic thing Barney used to say. Now… Well, I don’t mind the whole RoBarn stuff, and I do like to watch it, but it turns out we now have to Barneys, which is bad. Fused together they form the one we all know and love.

  52.  Hamster | November 5, 2009 @ 7:58 pm

looks like RoBarn will be no more. they had a good run but is just wasn’t working was it?

sypnosis for episode 7 is as follows

    The Playbook

“Barney dusts off his “playbook” to help him back into the dating scene following his breakup with Robin. “

  53.  Toby | November 5, 2009 @ 8:05 pm

That is episode 8, and I don’t believe for ten seconds that it is over for good; it just doesn’t add up.

Jazzer, I agree with you that we need more of the old Barney but I think that despite his being in a relationship the writers have done a good job of keeping him Barney.

  54.  CP | November 6, 2009 @ 4:34 am

^ So I was right about this episode being the beginning of the end of Barney and Robin … The episode just felt like a foreshadowing that the two could never work out the problems of a real relationship. It reminded me of how they foreshadowed the end of Ted and Robin back in season 2.

That’s good news for the show. We really need to go back to focus on Ted and the mother story line. And we might get the cool Barney and not-so-annoying Robin back again. Awesome.

  55.  Jazzer | November 6, 2009 @ 6:24 am

    Obvious… Kinda…

They’ll break up (woohoo), and then get back together after some time.

  56.  Fabio | November 6, 2009 @ 7:24 am

    spoilers much lol

  57.  Toby | November 6, 2009 @ 9:08 am

I don’t believe that it is going to be the END for Robin and Barney at this point, but I agree I would like to focus more on Ted

  58.  David | November 6, 2009 @ 9:35 am

Yes, focusing more on Ted would be a great step to recapture the true magic that HIMYM once had. Barney and Robin breaking up?? I hope so

  59.  sabregirl | November 6, 2009 @ 11:11 am

Favorite lines…..”yeah…I don’t think you know who Ghandi is” and “two-five!”

    LOL.

  60.  Thomas | November 6, 2009 @ 11:16 am

A real good episode, there was a lot of stuff I liked. “Bagpipes” for a start! It always cracks me up when they mention having a “sandwich”, so I think this will continue in that trend.

  61.  Jazzer | November 6, 2009 @ 11:17 am

@Fabio: No, that’s my opinion, or at least that’s pretty obvious that will happen, but there is no confirmation.

  62.  Toby | November 6, 2009 @ 2:41 pm

Jazzer, Im with you on the breaking up and getting back together thing, but I am not in agreement with the woohoo.

well, i don’t mind robbin and barney as a couple per se, i don’t need to see them break up. i still think they handled it wrong though. it would’ve been much more interesting not to have them jump into the relationship but maybe show their reluctance to do so and the trying to date each other while dating others or something. they could’ve had soo many good storylines with robin and barney, i think. so, to get back to the point, i also think they’ll get back together.

not sure they’ll end up together, though. i dont know about you guys but it’s always bothered me that barney and robin have never been in any of the “future scenes”. like when ted, marshall and lily are at their reunion. sure, it’s their reunion, but still. their not in lily’s porch fantasies either (she deemed robin not good enough to be in there as ted’s girlfriend an then wrote her out altogether). and when future ted says something referencing the future, it’s always just “that’s why we have thanksgiving at uncle marshall’s and aunt lily’s every year” or stuff like that, he never says anything about barney and mentions robin, like, twice (“she went on to star in some very important artworks” or something and “she went on to live in …”). i kind of worry that the two of them might not be around forever? seems stupid, i know, but those future things have always bothered me

  64.  katie90 | November 6, 2009 @ 7:59 pm

ps – to those of you who don’t liek the negativity on here following the last couple of episodes: don’t EVER go on imdb. seriously, everytime i go on the himym board there, they ruin another episode for me. had i never started reading that board, i’m not sure i’d have any complaints about the show. it’s just so..infectious :( i seriously need to start complaining less about the show. it is still amazing, after all, there’s no sitcom that holds a candle to it (except friends, which will never ever leave its throne as the best sitcom ever with me :D )

  65.  Fabio | November 6, 2009 @ 9:08 pm

    hahahah @jazzer i was just kidding…

  66.  BGeo | November 6, 2009 @ 11:18 pm

    @katie 90

the imdb board is pretty negative and is full of spoilers. i like it here

  67.  Angela | November 7, 2009 @ 1:14 am

I also liked this episode and thought Barney and Robin had good chemistry. My biggest complaint is that I dont feel the writers gave Robin/Barney a fair shot. They saturated us with them to the point people got sick of it. And the episodes were soooo focused on them that Lily/Marshall and Ted were supporting characters rather then leads they should be. They needed to pull back and have a few of the begining of Season 5 episodes about the other characters as well and not have barney/robin be the A story in every episode. ANd i think some of the best barney stuff is when he is just coming up with rules and charts and cool sayings and stuff and they should have figured a way to do that while he was with robin.

  68.  Jenn | November 7, 2009 @ 5:58 pm

I agree with Katie about Barney and Robin. I actually like the idea of them as a couple because they’re… well, kind of perfect for each other. But I didn’t like how “coupley” they were so quickly. I think it would have been better seeing them lying and trying to fight it whilst in the relationship a little longer. It didn’t seem right at all how annoying and clingy they were when it’s in their very nature to be independent and not like that. I do hope they get together again in the end, but the ooey gooey stuff just isn’t them!

  69.  Toby | November 7, 2009 @ 7:19 pm

I agree Katie, that Barney and Robin have been done wrong and I think it could have been handled a lot better and a lot funnier. They have so much potential!! I was upset that theu jumped into a relationship so quickly.

I think the reason that Ted doesn’t mention them together in the future is because the writers didn’t want to give anything away about Barney and Robin’s future. We already know Lily and MArshal are married so of course we see them together in the future, and as far as the front porch thing it was a Lily, Ted and MArshal thing because they have been friends since college.

The television without pity board is also pretty scary!

  70.  Jazzer | November 7, 2009 @ 7:35 pm

I don’t want to be offensive to anyone, and I’m not pointing any fingers, but in all honesty, we all need to stop being such douches and wannabe critics.

I know this is all just giving out oppinions, but when an episode is even a bit bad, everyone starts to give out a ton of bs… Can’t we all just get along? =]

  71.  Tash | November 8, 2009 @ 12:54 am

    Hey Toby!

I completely agree with you! I do think it’s soon going to be the end of Robin and Barney…FOR NOW. I think they just really need that time away from each other to help them realize just how legendary they were together. They had so much chemistry through the entire show but this season seems to be lacking a bit in that area. Though I think it’s just the change in atmosphere for them that has caused such a drastic change in their chemistry. They’ll realize they’re right for each other eventually ;)

  72.  Jazzer | November 8, 2009 @ 6:12 am

Oooohhh, I think we just had a “what-up quake”!

Three awesome episodes are ahead of us, and the one of 16th November is heaven for old Barney fans!

  73.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 12:33 pm

Something’s coming along about the show that, if it’s true and not a fantasy sequence, I stop watching the series. Really.

I’m not giving spoilers this time.

  74.  Jazzer | November 8, 2009 @ 5:13 pm

Could you send me the spoiler please?

    numbuh92@gmail.com

  75.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 5:47 pm

    done

  76.  Jazzer | November 8, 2009 @ 6:40 pm

Thanks for the email. =] Appreaciate the fast reply.

    As for the spoiler:

Well… I’ve kind of expected it. It’s nothing… Well, it’s not that of a shock to me. It was bound to happen, if you ever listened to Old Ted saying to his kids you wouldn’t be suprised either.

I know this isn’t a bad decision, and I know Bays isn’t going to dissapoint. They still haven’t. It’s a lot more complicated then as it seems on paper, there are lots of twists and turns, there always present.

  77.  Jazzer | November 8, 2009 @ 6:45 pm

Thanks for the email, and thanks for the fast reply. =] Appreaciate it.

As for the spoiler… Well, I’ve expected it for a long time. If you have ever listened to what old Ted is saying then you should have seen this coming. But I’m sure it isn’t as simple as it seems on paper. Bays isn’t going to dissapoint. There are always tons of twists and turns, or at least they were always present in HIMYM.

Everything is going in that direction. Here’s to CBS making Season 6!

  78.  Toby | November 8, 2009 @ 7:25 pm

I agree that it is not going to be as simple as it seems, and that Bays and Thomas are maniacal sadistic people who love to screw with their audience, and I am trying to hang on to that, but I agree with high hopper that it seems like a stupid idea, and I feel a little disappointed with the writers right now.

  79.  Jazzer | November 8, 2009 @ 7:38 pm

^ Maniacal and sadistic – Could not have said it better.

  80.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 7:48 pm

I am beginning to get bored at Himym. 5 seasons would have been perfect for the show. But knowing there are 3 more years before meeting the mother, it’s getting boring for me. I do not want robin and barney, that’s an arc that they used when they had nor ideas or time, and it should have ended forever.

I say, if they ever (you know, the spoiler), i stop watching the show. I’ll come for the eventual concerning Ted meeting the mother, but seriously, I’m really pissed off. This is a show about Ted, not Robin (who should have disappeared after Ted and her splitting up) or Barney in a way 90% of the show doesn’t want him.

  81.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 7:49 pm

I meant “90% of the audience doesn’t want him”

  82.  Toby | November 8, 2009 @ 8:02 pm

@ jazzer; thanks :) . I just keep remembering how mad I was when Stella was the girl with the umbrella but there was totally a twist to that, so I just remind myself that when the writers piss me off (like now!)

@high hopper, what do you mean? I thought the majority of the audience loves Barney! I agree with you (and everyone else who has said this) that it feels like it it turning into the Robin and Barney show, and I don’t like having them be the fore front of every episode. I want to see some more of Ted’s dating and other stuff with just some Robin and Barney action sprinkled in the mix.

  83.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 8:08 pm

I mean, people want to watch barney, the womanizer. Not barney “i handle relationships very well”.

And I really don’t mind if Robin would have disappeared after breaking up with Ted. We didn’t need her in the story. She was OK while seasons 1 and 2, but later seasons Robin, I do not like her a bit.

People want Ted, in the quest for the mother. They are doin bad episodes and bad jokes because they need time to get to the finale, and I think it would have been better 5 seasons OK, that 2 awesome, 2 OK and 3 lame. I guess we’re getting lame stories from here to the end. I do not like that at all…

  84.  Toby | November 8, 2009 @ 8:30 pm

I don’t know that 90% of the audience wants womanizing Barney because there are a ton of fans out there that want Robin and Barney together.

  85.  High Hoper | November 8, 2009 @ 8:57 pm

Yes, everyone wants them together… ¬¬

  86.  Filipa | November 8, 2009 @ 9:00 pm

Well I still want Robin and Barney together, but definitely not like this. I would like to see them as a dysfunction couple.

  87.  Toby | November 8, 2009 @ 9:28 pm

Yes! Bring on dysfunctional Barney and Robin!!

  88.  Jenn- GCWOK Approved | November 9, 2009 @ 2:10 am

Ditto on the dysfunctional Barney and Robin.
Also Barney is my favorite character! I think 90% of the show loves him. :)
Ok… I don’t want to know exactly what the spoiler is, but I’m so curious as to what it involves now! I know if I go searching for it I’ll find a bunch of spoilers that will ruin things for me, so I guess I will have to control myself. ….We’ll see if that happens.

  89.  Jazzer | November 9, 2009 @ 9:04 am

Chill people, it will not be like that. If the show’s going to air for another three years (*says to God* Thank you *says to God*), there are still tons of things to happen.

Seriously, how many times did you go like “Oh crap, c’mon, not that!” while watching HIMYM? I know I did, tons of times, and that’s what I like the most about the show. You never know what’s going to happen.

Things are not going to end like that, I give you my soul and word. If you don’t want that – Slap bet? =]

  90.  Bro | November 9, 2009 @ 1:41 pm

    Where’s JD?

  91.  High Hoper | November 9, 2009 @ 1:42 pm

I guess playing the bagpipes :P

  92.  Fabio | November 9, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

    @high hoper

    hahahahahaha Great comment.

  93.  Fabio | November 9, 2009 @ 1:47 pm

    @jazzer

thank you for reminding me of the “what-up-quake”… just rewatched this episode and it cracked me up again!

    hahahaha AWESOME!

  94.  katie90 | November 9, 2009 @ 2:18 pm

is it confirmed that they’ve got 8 seasons now?
i wouldn’t agree with high hoper about the everyone-just-wants-to-see-ted’s-journey-thing. seriously, apart from yourself i’ve never heard anybody say they like ted the best or are interested in him the most or something. sure, it’s ted’s show because it’s his story but the show would be sooo lame if it were only about him! the whole gang is what it’s all about! i agree that they need more ted stuff now in S5, but i’m sure they’ll come around to that once they’ve told the barney/robin thing

  95.  SophiaStinson | November 9, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

    heyyy high hoper, spoilers please???

    nursing4you35@yahoo.de

  96.  CourtneyE | November 9, 2009 @ 3:19 pm

High Hoper, not to be annoying, but can you send me the spoiler too? Thanks. :)

  97.  Jazzer | November 9, 2009 @ 3:21 pm

    @Fabio: Np, it’s a legendary phrase. =D

HIMYM changed my life, as ridiculous as that sounds, it is true. And no matter what happens, nothing, and I mean nothing will make me stop watching the series.

  98.  CourtneyE | November 9, 2009 @ 3:44 pm

I’m with you, Jazzer. I get kind of protective when people start bashing the show. I will concur that this season thus far has not been the stuff of legendaryiness that the past seasons have been, save for the premiere and Double Date, but full disclosure, I thought that about the start of Seasons 3 and 4 as well, and both of those seasons turned out lovely. It’s like someone else said a few weeks ago: we are thinking this way because we haven’t seen the full package yet and we don’t know where it’s going. That’s how HIMYM works. As a full package.

It should be noted that I’ve got a theory regarding Lily’s behavior (note: the theory does not involve bunnies) which hopefully turns out to be the case, because there’s really no other excuse.

  99.  katie90 | November 9, 2009 @ 4:20 pm

theories not involving bunnies are totally unaccaptable. i mean, they aren’t just cute like everybody supposes, they’ve got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses… ;)

so, spill it, courtney: what’s your theory?

i get why you’re protective by the way and i totally see the “the last seasons got better as well” point. i just GOTTA stop complaining. i mean, i love this show and i always will! though i agree that three more seasons would probably be to much, they’d run a high risk of screwing it up. the awesomeness that is HIMYM could not last beyond six seasons, i think. apart from friends, i can’t think of a show that did not notably lose quality after, like, five or six seasons. the only way shows usually stay watchable beyond that point is adding a variety of characters and introducing totally new storylines which i totally wouldn’t recommend for himym. except adding the mom, of course ;) but she shouldn’t be part of the group or something, he should meet her and it should just end there, i think. bla. rambling again. stop me :P

  100.  Fabio | November 9, 2009 @ 4:59 pm

MAn totally agree with you guys… when people start talking trash about the show i just go nuts…. I also have my complaints about this season but there’s nothing the writers could do to ever make me not watch the show anymore…I’m so addicted to it.

I think there are ways to keep the show going for 3 or maybe more seasons…but the writers are gonna have to work hard on the plots…cause if people are getting tired now, imagine 2 or 3 seasons from now (provided we don’t meet the mother ’til then).

I for one wouldn’t want to meet the mother until the LAST EPISODE……i think that the introduction of the mother would leave a dead end… and then the show would turn out to be “Friends-like” and i wouldnt want that.

Let’s see what happens from now on….no matter what, i’ll keep watching it lol :)

  101.  CourtneyE | November 9, 2009 @ 5:13 pm

katie90, it’s a boring theory – it involves her coming down with a case of the babies, and a Ted rewind of all her annoying moments with a “this is why she was acting crazy” voiceover.

  102.  Toby | November 9, 2009 @ 5:34 pm

I agree that its not cool when people trash talk the show, and I also agree that we shouldn’t meet the mother until the end because otherwise, whats the point? I don’t really see the show being about the mother, I see it as a clever way to do a show about a group of friends in a way that hasn’t been done before. That way it isn’t just another Friends.

Courtney, I like your lily theory but I don’t think there will be any babies any time soon because that would mess up the dynamic of the show.

Jazzer, what do you mean when you say the end of it? Are you talking about the show in general or something specific?

High hopper, your bagpipe comment was hilarious!

  103.  Jazzer | November 9, 2009 @ 6:29 pm

I don’t realize how I became the bad guy in this conversation by saying “the show changed my life”. If anyone read the whole comment, they should’ve realized that’s a good thing, not bashing the show.

  104.  Toby | November 9, 2009 @ 7:59 pm

Jazzer, it changed my life also but not in a good way. I am so beyond obsessed with the show, and I am emotionally invested in the Barney/Robin coupleing.

  105.  theaxe67 | November 9, 2009 @ 9:27 pm

    BARNEY’S BACK BABY

  106.  CourtneyE | November 9, 2009 @ 9:35 pm

Jazzer, I don’t think you were referring to my comment, but if you were, I was agreeing with you. Changed my life too, and I feel no shame in saying it.

Nor do I feel any shame in saying that tonight was hands down one of the funniest episodes of the series and I will fight anyone who says otherwise while “Murder Train” plays in the background. Barney and Robin will be back, once they “let things run their course”.

  107.  BGeo | November 9, 2009 @ 10:04 pm

Awesome episode. One of the best

  108.  High Hoper | November 9, 2009 @ 10:59 pm

Well, I did not like the episode a bit.

Only 2 things good for me:

-the picture of the bag and “oh it’s meg”
    -daddy’s home sequence

I continue watching the show as things were done well, but I did not like it either.

Alert! This show is going nowhere…

  109.  LE | November 9, 2009 @ 11:37 pm

I’ll admit that tonight’s episode didn’t do it for me as much as last week’s did, but I was delighted to hear “Murder Train” again. I wanted to hear it so badly during Robarn’s fight sequence in “Bagpipes.”

  110.  DoLf | November 9, 2009 @ 11:39 pm

I don’t know. I got a lot of mixed feelings for this episode. There were some parts that I liked, and some parts that I hated.
The show is going nowhere in terms of new plot ideas, so they are just trying to vary the show in different aspects ( more sound effects now, anyone notice? or the characters changing their personalities suddenly. ) Having RoBarn break up might indicate that a) the writers have no more ideas on them or b ) they simply don’t work as a sitcom couple.
What I really wonder is, why can’t they just go back and recreate the magical feeling that hooked us all in Season 1 – 2 ?

  111.  Gisella | November 9, 2009 @ 11:40 pm

I love this episode.. people wanted robin and barney to break up. Now that they did, people complaint too.. So??.. I really don’t understand what some people really want!!.. I really like this couple, but I suppose now we well have some more tome for Ted stories as well.

  112.  Toby | November 9, 2009 @ 11:48 pm

I refuse to believe that B&R are over for good. It is way too soon for that to happen, and they didn’t even give it enough of a chance to see if they work together as a couple or not. I am sure that this is some weird twisted way of telling their story but I don’t like it one bit!!!!!!! (ok, I haven’t actually watched the episode yet, but I have known this was coming for 6 weeks!)

  113.  LE | November 10, 2009 @ 12:05 am

I’m not sure that it was too soon—after all, Bays/Thomas initially intended to break Ted and Robin up after just a short period of dating (or so they said in the Season 2 commentary), but wound up keeping them together because their chemistry was so great.

Now, as for Robin and Barney’s chemistry? Meh…

  114.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 12:11 am

Bays and Thomas also said they never intended to put Robin and Barney together until they saw their chemistry in Zip Zip Zip.

I think they have great chemistry together, but the storyline for them has been so dramatic and so not like them. Last week I felt we finally got to see how the real Barney and Robin were together, and i thought their chemistry was off the charts.

  115.  BGeo | November 10, 2009 @ 12:32 am

That was definitely Mila Kunis in the bar right before Barney says “daddy’s home”

    Check it out!!!

  116.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 12:58 am

I broke down and watch it. I think it was handled really really badly. The begining was pretty funny, and the fighting flashbacks were funny, and I liked the end when Barney came into the Bar and said Daddy’s home, but everything else just sucked. Except the end. It just felt so final. I really hope this isn’t the end and they get back together at some point this season.

  117.  CP | November 10, 2009 @ 1:07 am

I don’t think it’s a great episode, but it did what it’s supposed to do (namely breaking up Barney and Robin) and set up well for the future.

Single Barney is going to be awesome again!

    And another Robin Sparkles video!

And we can go back toTed’s story again, finally.

  118.  bogo | November 10, 2009 @ 1:17 am

I know I’m going to regret this, but High Hoper, do you mind sending me the spoiler? bgogden@colby.edu.

Concerning tonights episode, I really enjoyed it. As a Robarn hater, I was still a little sad to see them breakup…and it was nice to like Lilly again.

  119.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 1:19 am

Agreed, it was nice to see lily acting normal.

  120.  Purple Giraffe | November 10, 2009 @ 1:37 am

BGeo that was most definitely NOT Mila Kunis.

I liked this episode because it set up what will surely be a purely awesome remainder of season 5. I’m so pumped for Awesome Barney. Although I wasn’t a complete Robarn hater like everyone else because I liked that they realized that at least at this point in time they are both way too dysfunctional to be in a realationship. I hope there are a lot of great Ted storylines coming up soon. I’m so excited for Ted and Barney single guy awesomeness!

  121.  katie90 | November 10, 2009 @ 3:01 am

    ok, new episode:
    - season 5-lily annoys the hell out of me, seriously, get her back to normal
    - the scene in the station wagon seemed too forced
    - the kids were back!!! loved that :D
    - old robin and fat barney were a little over the top, too. as i mentioned about the show last week, i usually love those things (“sandwiches”) but they’re overdoingg it
    - LOVED the end! they’re meant to be awesome friends. i liked the getting back together as friends thing so that we know there hopefully won’t be the whole annoying can’t-be-in-the-same-room breakup stuff
    and: DADDY’s HOME :D yay
    ..now i’ll read your comments

  122.  katie90 | November 10, 2009 @ 3:08 am

whatwhatwhat? you guys thought lily was normal? i didn’t like her with all the obsessiveness and her job of breaking up people and stuff. plus, she’s usually way too awesome not to know how a stormtrooper should look (after all, she broke ted and star wars-girl up in a perfect darth vader suit).

i don’t think it’s the definitive end for barney and robin but i do hope they let the whole thing rest for quite a while, at least until the season finale. the writers right now just aren’t able to make them a good and believable couple (with the esception of 5×01 when they started “lying” in the end and last week’s episode — the two instances in which they actually had chemistry and had me excited for them). maybe there’ll come a time in the show where i could buy into that relationship but as of now they just totally handled it wrong, i think most of us agree on that

  123.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 3:13 am

I agree that they handled the Robin/Barney pairing wrong. It makes me so mad because in the first episode this season I was so excited when they were lying and stuff, but then they turned them into a typical couple!!! Of course they are going to be miserable, they aren’t a typical couple. I want to see them give it a rest for a little while as well, but bring them back before the season finale. Like maybe have them hook up or have an open relationship or something, but not ansgty and dramatic.
The whole breakup felt forced and unnatural which is what I am going to be holding on to for hope that this isn’t the end.

I personally think the writers were smoking a lot of crack while coming up with this stupid plot.

  124.  katie90 | November 10, 2009 @ 3:35 am

yeah, i can see them hooking up and not telling the others or something. just pleeeeease don’t make em all couply again this season, this one relationship will be hard enough to recover from, storywise.

btw, high hoper, your spoiler was that they get engaged, right?

  125.  Willem | November 10, 2009 @ 5:32 am

I didnt like the episode that much
    fat barney was too much
    BTW!
    DADDY’S HOME

  126.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 5:59 am

    So much awesomeness…. Can’t… Resist…

Please, for the love of God, do NOT say this episode is bad, because it isn’t, and don’t say some parts were forced, since they weren’t, true HIMYM love anything that happens, and give Lily a break, so what, she’s a bit anoying?

Also, this episode is the gateway to getting the show back to normal, I mean, Barney get’s single again, and DADDY’s HOME? Come on, awesome! Plus, I thought Fat Barney was also, awesome. xD

  127.  High Hoper | November 10, 2009 @ 7:18 am

yeah katie. at least, I liked the thing that was goin’ to break them up ( i knew it), but i was serious telling I’d stop watching himym if the engagement became true and an arc for several episodes.

Have watched it again. Didn’t like it either.

  128.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 7:36 am

^ Didn’t it ever occur to you? Ever hear “Uncle Barney” and “Aunt Robin”? I knew that would happen from the start.

  129.  High Hoper | November 10, 2009 @ 8:23 am

maybe they’re not together in the future. or if they are, i hope it happens after ted-meets-mother ends.

huh? how is them being referred to as uncle barney and aunt robin any indication to them being married or something? everybody’s an uncle or an aunt to kids..
and i still think the car part was forced and lily was annoying after the second viewing

  132.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 9:18 am

As much as I love Barney and Robin together I did like the Daddy’s home thing at the end, and think single Barney can be good for a while. I might have been able to accept a breakup between them if a. they had laster more than 6 episodes, and b. if it felt natural. But none of the above happened, and I think they better come back around to them at some point and do it better! I don’t necessarily want them back in a conventional relationship, but I don’t want something.

  133.  CourtneyE | November 10, 2009 @ 10:15 am

All season everyone’s been saying they miss horny manipulative Lily. Last night we had horny manipulative Lily. So why is everyone complaining?

  134.  LE | November 10, 2009 @ 11:05 am

I don’t think “manipulative” Lily is my favorite Lily. I very much enjoy “flashed a group of guys on a dare” Lily. And “Suck it, losers!” Lily.

  135.  Bgeo | November 10, 2009 @ 11:58 am

I watched the episode again and ya that totally wasn’t mila kunis. This episode had everything: flashbacks, the kids, alan thicke, legend-wait for it, a barney sex tape/porn, the foreshadowing of a robin sparkles variety show and the return of classic barney. I am very surprised at the mixed feelings toward this episode here

  136.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 12:10 pm

^ Exactly, were getting old Barney back! Be happy!

  137.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 12:12 pm

Not everyone necessarily wants the old Barney back

  138.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 12:22 pm

^ Please explain a bit more. People either want the old Barney back, or they want Barney and Robin to break up, which leads to the first thing. And if people want them to say as a couple, they’ll end up married.

  139.  Starney Binson | November 10, 2009 @ 12:27 pm

I cannot imagine anyone who’s been a fan of this show for so long not wanting the original Barney Stinson back.

And I knew we were going to get it. Next week’s episode will be…

LEGEND – wait for it – S OF THE FALL

  140.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 12:52 pm

    ^ BINGO

  141.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 1:22 pm

Jazzer, its kind of complicated to explain (maybe not). Its not that I wasn’t a fan of old Barney. I LOVE Barney and was always a big fan of his. However, i got hooked on the whole Barney and Robin thing and was really looking forward to see how it would play out, and it ended really prematurely for me. So I have mixed feelings now because I loved the whole Daddy’s back thing and am looking forward to seeing next weeks episode, but at the same time I feel like I was cheated with an actual relationship with the two of them. If they had let it play out longer and really showed it didn’t work I feel like I could accept it, but I feel like it came out of nowhere. My gut says its not finished but who the hell knows really

    Sorry for the long response!

Please send me the spoiler to Mr. Hopper

  143.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 1:45 pm

@Toby: Of course there is still lot to happen, and of course it’s not over, it never is.

  144.  High Hoper | November 10, 2009 @ 2:15 pm

The spoiler happened in The Rough Patch (s05e07)

  145.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 2:28 pm

@ Jazzer, I am sure its not over yet either, but the whole we are so awesome we cancel each other out and the we are getting back together as friends thing felt so final.
I started watching HIMYM toward the end of last season so I never experiences the whole wait and be patient thing with this show because I watched almost 4 seasons in like a month. So this whole wait and see thing is just frustrating!!!! I feel like I would be able to enjoy old Barney for a while if I definitively knew that there will be more Robin/Barney.

  146.  Filipa | November 10, 2009 @ 3:09 pm

This was one of the worst episode of this show I can remember. The fat suit was so terrible and Why did we try and pretend Barney and Robin could be a couple, only to make them the worst couple ever, and now break them up?Anyway, the only moments that were good were Lily and Marshal trying to score porn and Barney’s triumphant return to the bar in full predator mode.

  147.  bogo | November 10, 2009 @ 3:31 pm

Am I the only one who, during the Robin/Barney breakup conversation felt they were literally listing all the complaints of HIMYM Fans/RoBarn haters…

I wanted to have them work, but they just didn’t

They cancel each other out (I remember someone on this blog saying that)

    Let things run its course

Maybe its just my feelings haha…

  148.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 3:34 pm

Ithink they can work, but its a matter of the writers letting them work.
The did a crappy job of it and made them Marshal and Lily lite so of course it isn’t going to work. If they made them sex buddies, or an open relationship or whatever I think it would have been fine. The strip club thing had so much potential and they screwed it up by making Robin crazy and jealous.

I don’t know…… like I said I don’t think it ran its natural course I think it was forced and stupid and I want to see what will happen next.

  149.  R2 Sweet Tooth | November 10, 2009 @ 4:03 pm

What I loved about this episode was how they gave insights of the old episodes. We have “Murder Train”, Crazy Meg, Robins’ music videos, manipulative Lily the and of course “Daddy’s home”. These refers really gives the characters a stronger character. And I actually found Barney’s fat suit really funny, it reminded me of him being a master of disguise including the old man suit. And I wondered where the stormtrooper had gone from Barney’s appartment the last episode, which the writers gave answer to.

Only bad thing I can think of was that we hadn’t seen Ted’s girlfriend before, from the beginning of the episode. It sure will be really thrilling to see what’s next.

ok, this is old now but something’s been bothering me about this discussion again: can we maybe steer clear of sentences like “any REAL himym fan loved the episode” or “whoever didn’t like this can’t call himself a fan” or something? i always hate that. and it’s soooo imdb ;) i mean, we’re all fans here, we just have different opinions but we all look forward to the show every week and want it to be great, ok?

  151.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 4:14 pm

Oooh, maybe that was a flash forward and she is the mom :)

As much as I hated the episode overall I did enjoy some bits and pieces and the throwbacks to old episodes was definitely one of them :) . I also enjoyed them reviewing Barney and Robins’ fights as well.

  152.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 4:17 pm

    I’m with you Katie!

P.S I also liked the beginning of the episode with the porn thing and Barney’s message to Ted.

  153.  katie90 | November 10, 2009 @ 4:30 pm

oooh yesyesyes! archisexture was awesome, i’d totally forgotten about that. it was a very “barney” move to make that tape (and of course to know which porno movie ted would pick), i loved that

  154.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 4:34 pm

Yeah, I mean I hate the outcome of Barney and Robin but there is a part of me that is looking forward to womanizing Barney again. He looked so hot when he came in and said Daddy’s home.

Of course what I found hilarious was at the end tag when he ran out to find the next Robin Sparkles thing instead of picking up women at the bar gave me hope that this isn’t over for good.

  155.  Jazzer | November 10, 2009 @ 4:53 pm

How awesome is Barney to make a pre-made clip, already seeing in his future?

Fat Barney was awesome, it looked so real imho.

  156.  Tash | November 10, 2009 @ 5:41 pm

I don’t think Barney and Robin are really over just yet.

I’m yet again in between about this ep. I liked how it was handled, but I still don’t understnad why they would bring this couple together just to tear them apart so quickly. Not only that, but I really hope this isn’t going to be just another repeat of the Rachel Ross thing. That’s why I’m thinking the whole story hasn’t been shared just yet.

I mean, he went to Canada for her! He HATES Canada and anything it stands for ;P

But yeah, this episode was alright IMO

  157.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 5:48 pm

Ugh yeah I am with you on the Ross and Rachel thing, or even worse a repeat of the JD/Elliot pairing on Scrubs

  158.  katie90 | November 10, 2009 @ 5:59 pm

i really don’t get what people are always saying about ross and rachel. it’s like they’ve become the poster child for on-again-off-again relationships by telling and re-telling the story. i mean, they really only were together twice, once in season 2 and then again in the finale. ted and robin also had their sex-relapse twice (slapsgiving and then where they use it to prevent fighting).
the JD/elliot comparison is more of a fit for me, that’s what i don’t want as well. but i think the being-friends-speech while breaking up was a good indication that they won’t be such an dramatic on-again-off-again couple. sure, they’ll be on again at some point, but it won’t go back and forth so much, i don’t think

  159.  bogo | November 10, 2009 @ 9:39 pm

The thing that scares me about the similarities JD/Elliot thing is that Bill Lawrence never intended for them to get back together again after the 3rd(?) season (can’t remember which one), and that’s why he had J.D. destroy her, so that even if they got their friendship back, there would not be another chance at a relationship because he didn’t want it to become “Ross/Rachel” and the constant undercurrent of the show and its fanbase. He only gave in because the other writers (and, imho, the fans) really wanted it.

That said, I still trust these writers. I feel like the last few episodes have felt like HIMYM again, if not quite up to the quality of the classics. They know when they are making mistakes, and work to fix them. And, lets be honest, mediocre HIMYM still blows 99% of comedy out of the water, if only because the chemistry between the actors was always what made the dialogue work, and not appear canned and unbelievable.

Can’t wait to see what is next.

  160.  Toby | November 10, 2009 @ 9:40 pm

@ katie, yes they were only together once during the show, but they always went back and forth with their feelings for each other. Plus they had a baby together. It was pretty annoying (I am sorry, I know you are a die hard Friends fan. I mean no offense)
I do however at this point agree with you that Robin and Barney are more analogous to J.D and Elliot only because J.D spent a year and a half pining after her, and their “relationship” lasted a minute. Sound familiar???????

  161.  katie90 | November 11, 2009 @ 6:07 am

none taken, toby :) weirdly, i measure himym by a higher standard than friends because its setting just has more potential and it’s just a little more up-do-date simply because it’s newer (i laughed out loud when chandler started bragging about his 28k modem in an episode i recently watched). it has a very modern style of storytelling with the flashbacks and fast cuts and all. can’t quite explain about friends, the show’s just been part of my everyday life for so many years, i can’t go without it. simply put: they’ll be there for me :P

yes, that’s it, the pining..ooooh the pining..it took barney the last few episodes of season 3 and all of season 4 to tell robin he liked her and now they were togheter for a total of six episodes. that’s why romantic movies stop after the happy end. you don’t want to see that the girl/boy the characters has longed for for more than a year is not the right one :D (that’s also why i liked that they waited with ross/rachel until the very end, no one wants to see the crappy daily relationship drama). but i trust the writers to at some point in the future really make me believe in robin and barney.

  162.  Toby | November 11, 2009 @ 10:37 am

KAtie, I totally understand what you mean about Friends. They were a huge part of my life for ten years and I felt a void after it went off the air, but I got really sick of the show because when I first got DVR I would record the reruns and just got sick of it
