Oh my God.
I did not like a thing about this. Possibly the worst episode not only of this season, but probably in the “worst top 3 episodes of all himym”.
Really, the only thing I save from the episode is Lily’s “It’s not decaf”.
Anything else? Boring. Really. Including the Ted still loves Robin just to slap Barney.
Robin and Ted played nothing today. Barney did not do a thing. Lily’s father’s not funny at all. Lily is boring and annoying and Marshall is not the Erikssen we loved.
Really? Where the hell is this show going?

I’m with you High Hoper.
In my top three worst eps along with Everything Must Go and Aldrin Justice. The common thread? They’re all Lily-centric.
I hate Lily because she always ruins episodes by alternately acting like a shrew and the voice of reason without any imperative but to add minutes to the broadcast time. She is rarely funny and usually drags down the rest of the cast (who are extraordinary BTW).
Carter and Craig, please stop making Lily-centric episodes…they bog down entire seasons of your awesome show.

so true, high hoper. this was so bad – i kind of don’t even wanna talk about it. the only (i repeat – ONLY) thing i liked was the last bit, the slap bet game and that’s only cause it had the slap bet song. this was in my opinion the worst episode so far.
btw – they totally brought evil willow back with the “you’re dead to me” looks. lily, however, remains lost.

I actually kinda liked this episode. Definitely wasn’t the best, but the gag ad at the end actually had me laughing off my seat. I want that game!
But I’m with what y’all are saying about Lily. I remember in Season 1 when I liked Marshall and Lily as a couple because they were the cool couple, not domesticated at all. Lily was also the one to speak her mind and actually come off really really awesome (The pilot’s “You chickened out like a little bitch.” quote resonates in my head). In season 5, it just seems they’re the opposite, more domesticated, and that “cuteness” that was Lily has become the “evil” we see a lot of in Season 5. Bring “cute” Lily back!
Now that I think of it, one thing I thought was a pro to HIMYM over Friends was how eccentric and well defined the characters are. However, it seems sometimes that the writers may have worked themselves into a wall by having such a high definition of the characters.

I felt it was a mediocre episode, primarily because it had a lot to live up to, as (in my opinion) slapsgiving is one of the best episodes. Barney had little to do in this episode, which made it different from most of the other episodes this season. An average episode overall

That;s so funny, I really liked it! I thought the end was a little too cheesy though, and it as predictable that Marshal would slap him, but overall I thought it was pretty funny. I agree it was not as good as the original, but sequels never are
.

BTW I am in complete agreement about Everything Must Go, and Aldrin Justice they both sucked!
I think its weird that monica and chandlers mother from Friends played Lily’s grandmother. She can’t be old enough to be a grandmother to a 20 something year old.
Toby | November 24, 2009 @ 12:37 am
My bad, I meant Monica and Ross (sorry for the three posts)
Jessica | November 24, 2009 @ 12:47 am
This was awful. This was the worst episode I’ve seen on this show.
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | November 24, 2009 @ 1:05 am
It wasn’t that bad. I mean, how could it live up to the first slapsgiving anyway? It wasn’t my favorite, but it was fun and it’s always nice to kick back and watch an episode without analyzing everything that’s good and bad in it. Obviously we all saw Marshall’s slap coming, but what I didn’t see coming was the ad at the end. Ha. My ex would love that game.
I totally thought that about Monica’s mom- Lily doesn’t seem like she would be a whole generation older! That made made me do a double take. I guess the math works, though…
I watched the pilot today and it was hilarious how cheesy it was compared to how HIMYM is now! I was cracking up the whole time! I thought this show was one of the only ones that didn’t have to grow into itself for a couple seasons, but I suppose it did a little. Marshall’s hair is so funny.
Happy Slapsgiving, everybody!
Oh- best part of the episode was when Marshall pulled two fake arms out to hold hands on the computer!
Now if you’ll all excuse me, I have to go get together some gloves and duct tape for a skype call tomorrow…

P.S. Did anybody panic just a little when Ted announced he was still in love with Robin? That little dude is pretty convincing.
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | November 24, 2009 @ 1:08 am
Did I just say little dude? It’s like a texty text- you can’t take it back!!!
Toby | November 24, 2009 @ 1:26 am
Jenn as usual great minds think alike!
MY heart thudded for a minute when he said ” I am still in love with you” Of course I knew that was nothing
.
I rewatched the pilot as well and also felt something was missing. I think it was the fact that the swarkles pairing really messed things up for me, and I wish the writers hadn’t gone there at this point because it ruined the magic of the show for me a little.
KR | November 24, 2009 @ 1:30 am
Jenn: I agree that the pilot is quite cheesetastic, but I think HIMYM had hit quite a stride by the time Mary the Paralegal rolled around. Season 2 was IMO when it peaked, it’s just the perfect season. 3 was still pretty good, and then 4/5 have been a steady decline, at least for this viewer.
This episode, like this whole season, was mediocre. HIMYM usually puts a fresh twist on something old, but they didn’t bother with that when introducing Lily’s dad, which is maybe why I hated it. We’ve all seen “estranged/deadbeat dad” stuff on TV, if not real life.
The characters did feel more like themselves in this episode, though, so I guess we can be thankful for that. It had a few good jokes, but not good enough to make up for the plot.
Starney Binson | November 24, 2009 @ 1:30 am
Um, no, this episode was great. Not on par with the original, but, other than the Playbook, the best episode of the season, by far.
SlapBetCommish | November 24, 2009 @ 2:04 am
Loved it, sorry, but I loved everything about it.
Purple Giraffe | November 24, 2009 @ 4:04 am
I also loved this episode! of course it wasn’t as good as the original but it was way better than i expected! People on this site like to complain waaaay too much.
SophiaVonMatterhorn | November 24, 2009 @ 4:21 am
