We Will Meet the Mother in the Season Five Premiere
By JD
Super-fan Rachel wrote in to tip me off that Carter Bays recently told TV Squad that “Ted and the mother will be in the same room together in the season premiere.” Now before you get all in a kerfluffle, let’s rehash how devious Bays can be.
Scenario 1: The camera pans out over the class Ted teaches at university and Saget’s voice says “little did I know your mother was in that class.” That’ll have fans analyzing the sea of faces for years to come.
Scenario 2: We cut to the children and Future Ted. Somewhere offscreen we hear the mother’s voice. Remember, Carter didn’t say past Ted and the mother would be in the same room. Total bait and switch, classic Bays.
That’s my theory anyway. What do you guys think?

The problem is that the mother is a character we've never met, so even if we all stared at the classroom for hours, chances are we still wouldn't know. We just have to wait.

Maybe they'll have a scene in the classroom where she asks him a question or something, but we won't be able to see who is asking from the lecture hall. Or maybe we'll see the back of her head…though that would narrow things down a lot, knowing the hair color/type/length.

Define, " Room ". Perhaps they pass by while walking to different terminals at JFK International Airport?
BGeo | Thursday, August 6th, 2009 02:15 am GMT -4
However they decide to play it out, I'm sure it will be awesome. Most of us were scared to see spencer and heidi earlier this year, but it was played out flawlessly.

In the last episode of season 4 future-Ted told us that the mother is in the class he is teaching. so i guess it will be the first scenario.
DaveR | Thursday, August 6th, 2009 02:39 pm GMT -4
I'm gonna guess the first scenario as well. Does this mean they've cast the mother? That's a pretty huge deal if you ask me. No, we're not gonna know which one, in a sea of students, the mother is. But, if they've cast her, they can put her in that classroom.
Or, perhaps, Ted and the mother will be in the same room 'conceptually'. It's possible they haven't cast her, and won't put her in the scene. But, as a "concept", she'd have to be in the classroom while Ted is teaching.
I really hope for #1. For a while now, I've been hoping Bays and Thomas would sneak the mother in to scenes so that fans can look back and actually say .. 'Yup, she was there!'.

Remember the episode where Ted goes to a club – it might be the St. Patricks day episode – and at the end he picks up that yellow umbrella, I'm sure he said "little did I know, but it was your mother's umbrella", which puts her at the club. I've always thought the mother would end up as the girl her bumped into on his way to the bar. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for her ever since!
Ike | Thursday, August 6th, 2009 10:37 pm GMT -4
I've been a proponent of #2 for awhile. It lets us meet the mother without letting present Ted meet her.
Chloe, the girl you're talking about is called 'bump girl'. Many people think that. I believe it's a red herring.

I can't wait for it to start so I have some content of real life comparisons for my blog…for now I'll settle for old Marshall Erickson quotes

hmmmm, i think whats happening is maybe we will meet the mother, but ted won't. Keep in mind the yellow umbrella has something to do with ted meeting her, we also know he called her the minute he got her number, and that Robin has something to do with it. Since he said at the end of last season that this story is only just beginning, maybe we meet her and start to see her side of the story leading to the moment those stories coincide, just a thought.
However in classes as big as the 1 ted appears to be teaching, you dont get to know the prof as well, the fact that they are in the same room together has limited options since the class he's teaching looks to have atleast 100 people in it.
It started as a story of how he met his mother, then turned into the "how i became who i needed to be" and now its turning into something else, maybe the mother will start to have a different role on the show as he states "that stories only just beginning." haha, sorry trying to make as much sense as i can, definetly a little curious how the stories going to change.
jenjen | Saturday, August 8th, 2009 06:27 am GMT -4
hey, i have a quick question. you said that "robin has something to do with it". With what exactly? and how do you know? maybe i missed something but i'm just curious.
Kooper | Saturday, August 8th, 2009 12:06 pm GMT -4
I agree they will do something like the yellow umbrella. What I love about the show is how they go back and add characters to old scenes. I love in "the Fight" How they added Doug to a bunch of old scenes in the bar. When we finally do meet the mother I am sure we will see here in the St. Patrick's day night club with a shocked look on her face as Ted is punched in the face or walking down the street when he sees Stella when HE has the yellow umbrella and there will be a scene where Ted gets the yellow umbrella.
eric | Sunday, August 9th, 2009 10:17 pm GMT -4
ok well heres just a couple things to think about in terms of the next season,
1 in the pre-season finale episode ted comments about the movie that stella screenwrites, and says he'll get to that later- no idea how this will tie in but im sure oit will in a big way as the screenwriters are very diligent about that sort of thing.
2 correct me if im wrong but i dont believe that barney has yet figured out who his mystery girl is from the episode with the bracket.
3 although this is kind of irrelevant, marshall still has 2 slaps left on his slap bet with barney.
4 keep in mind that it is unethical to date a student and as someone commented above in a class that big he might not even get to know her this coming season so there are almost certainly multiple seasons to come assuming the show gets picked up for them which id be willing to bet it will.
just some things to think about
scott | Monday, August 10th, 2009 03:18 am GMT -4
i forget exactly where but i think the creators said it when they were dismissing all the theories that robin is the mother, someone else would be able to back it up with more solid proof but i believe it was carter bays that said it at one point
CourtneyE | Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 12:03 am GMT -4
Eric, mysterious bracket girl is Britney Spears. I still want to know who it was supposed to be originally.
saar | Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 05:14 am GMT -4
well in the end of the 4 season ted says "as you know' your mother was in that class" maybe she is another proffesor or somthing that helps ted
oh and in start of the 3 season future ted says that the kids know the short story with the yellow umbrella
so they can possibly meet when its raining
Bruna | Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 05:36 pm GMT -4
I think she will be a student (we know how Ted loves when people listen to him). But I Think to keep the mistery we´ll see her looks just in the end of the season. I think they will put her voice off in some flashbacks while Ted is telling the others what an amazing student he has… and then the guys are going to try to picture her in very funny ways… I think it will be a little like that!
Am I going away to crazy here? ^^
Hope not…:)
Zach | Thursday, August 13th, 2009 01:28 pm GMT -4
Definitely, we shouldn't get worked up about the mother being in the same room as Ted. She was in the same room as him at the St. Patrick's day party, and we didn't meet her then. I think this scene will play out like all the other "close calls," and it will be revealed to the audience right before the episode ends that the mother was in that first class.
Billqs | Friday, August 14th, 2009 08:15 pm GMT -4
If you're referring the girl in The Bracket that was setting Barney up, it was the character (Abby?) that was played by Britney Spears.
Elari | Friday, August 14th, 2009 09:58 pm GMT -4
I have no idea how this brilliant show can go on, but in my honest opinion i think i cracked the code on finale. The narrator said, that "i met your mother in this class". It doesn't mean it is the same people who were on season finale for a second-two.. Same class(room) can mean that Ted is a teacher for many long years and always is in the same classroom.

Damn, there really must be something in that water over at the HIMYM-set,I just read that Sarah Chalke is expecting a baby!
Nitz the Bloody | Saturday, August 15th, 2009 05:28 am GMT -4
Okay, these pregnancies can't be coincidences. :p Someone needs to set up a betting pool for who's the next mother-to-bef the show's recurring actresses, Lyndsey Fonseca, Ashley Williams, or Charlene Amonia.
ted_clone_1 | Saturday, August 15th, 2009 12:57 pm GMT -4
Ted and the "Mother" have already been in the same room together…. St patricks day at that club with barney…. remember "NO TOMORROW!!!!" My hunch is that the lady ted accidently bumped in the club while running up to talk to barney at the bar is the mother. im not possitive about this but if u watch it you will notice they made a big deal about him bumping into her but we have never seen her b4 and no other story line with her.
Sarah | Monday, August 17th, 2009 04:21 pm GMT -4

I'm really looking forward to season 5, no matter what the scenario will be :p
TheMix | Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 12:20 am GMT -4
'nother theory to throw in there…..doesn't have to be a student, obviously.
I was thinking about Ted possibly giving some sort of dissertation of sorts to Profs. on campus…
just a thought.
stu | Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 09:39 am GMT -4
i think this whole ted&robin thing is all done by now. no more. at least i hope so. i think robin and barney wil actually last, in some form or an other. depends what kind of relationship they're involving to.
SocraticMethod | Wednesday, August 19th, 2009 09:40 pm GMT -4
Does Ted say at the end of last season, "Your mother was in that class" or "I met your mother in that class"?
Thanks!
jenjen | Thursday, August 20th, 2009 01:16 am GMT -4
I just watched "The Leap" again and his exact words were " …Because if anyone of those things hadn't happened, I never would have ended up in what turned out to be the greatest job I ever had. But more importantly? I wouldn't have met your mother. Because as you know, she was in that class. Of course that story is only just beginning"… i was bored today. hope that helps!!
saar | Thursday, August 20th, 2009 09:16 pm GMT -4

earlier that episode the love soulutions guy tells ted to look in the file and then ted says she is perfect and then they show bluerd pictures of her the point is:
when he says"she wants 2 kids, a boy and a girl" why does the pictures of the 2 kids is blured???
what do you think?
sry for my english im not american
saar | Thursday, August 20th, 2009 09:18 pm GMT -4
before the "and you know why":
i think the mother is the date he missed because he loved robin

Thanks for posting this!!!
Raiger | Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 09:15 pm GMT -4
Robin has to play a part in meeting the mother because there has to be a reason Ted's story of how he met her started with meeting Robin.
hilary | Saturday, September 12th, 2009 02:51 am GMT -4
i think ted will come to class one day with the yellow umbrella, i mean obviously that's what he'd do if it's raining outside right? and the student/mother will say something along the lines of, "that's funny. i used to have a yellow umbrella but i lost it on st. patrick's day."
i feel like this is a given. he uses the umbrella normally and it's got to rain sometime. and who wouldn't notice a unique umbrella that looks exactly like one you used to have? and unless she's really shy, she's going to comment on it.
just saying…

This is my first time coming here. But I have a question. Remember when Ted was trying the dating service? And remember how there was a girl who was a great match for him, and he was on his way to a date with her, and decided not to go, because he imagined the wedding and Robin sitting there with a forlorn look on her face?
The match from the dating service had her face blurred out the whole time, and Ted never met her. I have a feeling she will be the mom. (Or did this come up in some other episode, and I missed it?) Why else would they blur out her face and have him never have a face to face encounter?

IF you watch closely at the end of the first episode of season 5, right after Barney and Robin walk down the stairs to go to brunch, you will notice a girl walking out of McClaren’s. Although she is only there for a hot second, she looks remarkably like “bump girl”. She is the only person in the scene background. And then, as the camera pans up to Ted, he clearly looks in the direction of the girl who just left the bar. Discreet, but definitely worth noticing.
