You Must Party Down

I don’t often recommend other shows on the site. I’m about to make an exception because there is a show that is so good I can’t not tell you about it. It hasn’t picked up a lot of support yet but I promise you it’s going to be big.
It’s called Party Down and it’s on Starz (what that is, I’m not entirely sure.) It’s a story of a bunch of out of work actors working for a catering company. Hilarity ensues. Not interested yet? Well check it: the series was co-created by Paul Rudd. You on board now? How about Rob Thomas being the other co-creator and thus bringing half of Veronica Mars with him? The cast is ridic:
- Adam Scott - he’s the “oh, that guy” guy. You’ve seen him before, even if you don’t know his name. His character on this show also has bigger balls than I even thought was possible. You’ll see what I mean in episode #4.
- Ken Marino – This guy was the sleazy private detective on Veronica Mars, also Tony on Reaper
- Jane Lynch – The boss in 40 Year Old Virgin or, as I call her, “that hilarious woman.”
- Ryan Hansen – Dick Casablancas. Enough said.
- Martin Starr – Yes, THAT Martin Starr, from Freaks and Geeks
- Lizzy Caplan – Last but not least. I have a confession: Caplan might be my dream girl.
If you haven’t yet gone to the Starz website to watch the two available episodes you can watch the (edited) first episode right here.
You need to watch it if only to see the joke that made me laugh so hard I had to pause the video. It happens around 13:25.
So go check it out. If the Starz thing doesn’t work then I can recommend…other methods of procuring the show. Then come back here and tell me what you think. I can’t imagine not loving this show.

You can also watch all episodes on Netflix.
Gravity | April 20, 2009 @ 5:22 am
I'll have to check this out, I love the cast.
JD, as much as I've seen you mention Chuck in the past I'm kind of surprised I haven't heard from you on it recently. There's a big campaign going on to get it a third season since it's in danger of getting canceled.
Gravity | April 20, 2009 @ 5:53 am
Just watched the first episode. You've got me hooked.
Taryn | April 20, 2009 @ 6:34 am
Totally love the show, and i love seeing all of the veronica mars alumni. Thanks for the recommendation.
leishman161 | April 20, 2009 @ 1:05 pm
Have seen all the episodes of this so far and it is excellent. It gets funnier each week as the cast really start to click with each other. All the VM alumni guest starring is a great bonus. Highly recommended

This show really picks up around the third or fourth episode. I look forward to see where they go with this.
gtognini | April 21, 2009 @ 9:05 am
it sucks… and the joke at 13:25 is horrible and cheesy. This suggestion is disgracing a good site that honors the HILARIOUS show how i met your mother..
SSJ | April 21, 2009 @ 10:39 am
I'll give it a try… Is it also sitcom like HIMYM?
JustinDickinson | April 21, 2009 @ 12:14 pm
It's nothing like himym actually. It's cynical and dark with subtle humor that's a little silly.
Ashley | April 21, 2009 @ 3:35 pm
I'm ridiculously in love with this show. It's spot on, every week.
JustinDickinson | April 21, 2009 @ 3:38 pm
Finally! Someone with a sense of humor.
BGeo | April 21, 2009 @ 4:05 pm
haaaaaaave you met Robin?
A lot of the cast has stuck together from Role Models, which is hilarious.
I thought the first episode wasn't as funny as the second episode so give it a chance friends!
John Darc | April 21, 2009 @ 9:57 pm
Haven't finished downloading it yet, but Adam Scott was the original Aaron Tyler in Wonderfalls before Lee Pace got the job.
Also, Lizzy Caplan got naked on True Blood. FINALLY.

This show is hilarious, very dark and cynical like you say, it's kind of like the Office in Showtime would be… The cast is really great and episodes 3, 4 and 5 are extremely funny.
I'm also in love with Lizzy Caplan since Mean Girls and The Class (and a little role on Freaks and Geeks).

Thank you for this. I fucking love Party Down. I started watching it because of all the Veronica Mars connections (season 1 of VM is the best seasons of TV I have ever seen), and it did not disappoint. Every episode has been excellent so far.
clearwater | April 22, 2009 @ 11:33 am
I"ve been a fan of Lizzy Caplan since Mean Girls as well. I will quote that movie for the rest of my life.
JustinDickinson | April 22, 2009 @ 11:51 am
Glad you like it too. What's your favorite episode?
clearwater | April 22, 2009 @ 12:10 pm
Hard to say, since it's been getting progressively better, but probably a tie between 4 and 5. Roman's rant about how fantasy and sci fi are totally different was hilarious, as was Constance's "what's ecstasy?" and her barnyard animal thing from episode 4.
I'm really glad it's on cable, they don't have to hold back.
SSJ | April 22, 2009 @ 12:33 pm
I downloaded all 5 episodes so when I have some free time I'll watch it
.
Gravity | April 22, 2009 @ 5:44 pm
Oh my god, Danny DeVito, I love your work!
BGeo | April 23, 2009 @ 6:00 pm
just watched the first 5 episodes over the past few days.
It is sort of a different show, but its pretty funny

Long time reader, first time poster. I usually don't watch too many TV shows, but I fell in love with HIMYM and I think the same is starting to happen with Party Down. Some definite LOL moments. Thanks for the recommendation! Now they just need to put out more episodes, I'm on the edge of my seat!!!

hey JD, i am sorry but i couldnt get any laughs out of the show and if it was on tv i would have most properly changed the channel within the first minutes but i did finish watching the show and will download the other episodes maybe it will get better.
Dave | May 10, 2009 @ 7:49 pm
Wow. That – was- AWFUL. Simply terrible. I love HIMYM, so I figured your opinion was worth giving this a try, but I was wrong. What a waste of 30 minutes. Not a smile from me the whole time.
Watch Veronica Mars | June 26, 2009 @ 3:10 am
I like to watch Veronica Mars episodes as well Lost. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.
