…DARY!

Hey guys, what’d I miss?

A small explanation of my absence: yes, I didn’t care much for last season. I liked the finale, but not enough to want to write about it. I was disappointed with the show overall. Honestly, I think if I discovered HIMYM now I might not love it as much as I did when I originally discovered it. Does that mean I don’t like it? No, I have a history with it and still love it dearly. I wasn’t boycotting the show or the site, I just didn’t much care for the end of last season and didn’t have very much to say. I wrote one negative review that you guys all hated so I figured I’d follow my own advice online and keep my negative opinions to myself.

The real cause of my absence had to do with my real life. I believe I shared that I’m now working at Vimeo and that has (happily) taken up a lot of my time. It’s super fun here but when I get home I don’t always have the energy to do more stuff online. I’ve also been working on some other projects which hopefully I can announce soon (hint: they’re awesome).

But none of that really matters. Season 6 is upon us and I’m skeptical, but excited. Articles in which Bays and Thomas admit that season five sucked are a good start. The return of Rachel Bilson is always welcome. Game-changing opening moments raise my eyebrows.

Other than that, how was everyone’s summer? Have you been watching True Blood? Brad looks good with his shirt off, huh?

To prove I haven’t been marooned on an island somewhere I have been active in other areas of the internet:

My blog – mostly about design and technology, but I think it’s interesting
Today in Bears – A blog about ursine culture
Vimeo Awards – this is a big deal

    Awesome!
    :)

I’d only tell you one thing: if you have to write something negative, do it. It is clearly not for harming the show, it only makes us read what you think.

I, for myself, am very happy that you’re back writing here. And as I said before, the moment you know anything for you or HYMT.com, you know where I am, man! :)

  2. J |  Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 12:35 pm GMT -4

Totally agree, and I think it was brave of you to come out and tell the truth about the mediocre-fest that was last season. I’ve been watching this show since day 1 and the things that made me fall in love with it have slowly faded into ghostly caricatures of what they once were. Case in point: Robots vs. Wrestlers, where Ted’s doucheness, which has always been playfully (and often hilariously) understated, is used as the entire joke. And the fart noises? What is this, nickelodeon?

That said, I do have hope for next season. Like you mentioned, Bays and Thomas realize they’ve lost their way, and one more season like that one will turn a whole lot of their faithful (yours truly included) off of the series for good. I cant wait for the premiere, and am dying to see how they start the “final act” of their epic love story. Personally, as long as they realize that the characters need to begin to grow up, and as funny as the “screwing around in our twenties” stories are, they don’t work anymore, I’ll be happy. If they wanted to do a show about people in their twenties, they probably shouldn’t have started the characters at 27.

So, I’m hopeful, as ever, that these last couple of seasons will be a great ride. I’m also hopeful that you get back into it and keep up the blog like you used to! It’s an invaluable resource to a lot of people. I know you’ve got a lot of other stuff going on, but come on man, priorities! In all serious though, thanks for what you do!

  3. Tove |  Tuesday, August 31st, 2010 01:41 pm GMT -4

Well that article gives me some hope! I’m quite excited about HIMYM coming back, and some consistent stories would be nice. Anyway yay for a new post on this blog!

Never have I been so pleased to see what would otherwise be mistaken as a misspelling of “dairy” at the top of my screen – as opposed to the same old “Season 5, Episode 24…” business!

Congratulations on your job and, without further ado, WELCOME BACK JD!

    WOAH!

Well, hello there! Good to see you back. If you wanna write something negative – go for it, you know I do, too :P And hell YEAH, I’ve been watching True Blood. Still like Brad better in himym, though, he’s just so damn funny. That being sad – anyone wanna go halfsies on a gravy boat? :D

    YAY!!!!!!! WELCOME BACK

  8. Vinay |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 09:02 am GMT -4

Nice review of season 5. I feel there were some great episodes this season like “Playbook” and “Perfect Week” but sadly there were lot of inconsistencies in many episodes and no one would feel like watching it the second time. Hope there are more clues about the mother in this season and we will eventually know by at least the next season atleast. Hope this series finishes off on a high like “Friends”.

  9. marggis |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 09:09 am GMT -4

Glad to see you’re back and your absence was because of good things in real life, not negative. :) I’m waiting for your recaps (both positive and negative), they make me realize things in the show I might have otherwise missed (because I’m not american). :)

Season 5 wasn’t good, there were some highlight, but as you all have said, it wasn’t as good as it was supposed to be. I don’t have high hopes for season 6 but I’m willing to give it a fighting chance. :) I love the show and I hope it will get better and more awesome again.

  10. Big Irish |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 10:14 am GMT -4

Glad to see the blog has resurfaced. I was close to removing it from my RSS feed last week, but decided things might pick back up once the season started again. I’m glad I was right.

  11. Noga |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 11:07 am GMT -4

So happy you said that. I now feel ‘allowed’ to hate last season, if you did as well :P I agree with you on every level. I dont think I would have liked the show as much as I do if I started watching it this season. My attention shifted from HIMYM to other shows and I do hope S6 gets me excited about it again.

and I love True Blood. Brad does look good with his shirt off. damn!

  12. NCUK |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 12:35 pm GMT -4

    HE’S NOT DEAD!!! :D

  13. Toby |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 02:02 pm GMT -4

    Welcome back :) .

Brad is in true blood? Who does he play? I don’t watch it, but my friend is obsessed with it so I hear a lot about it (I don’t mind because I bore my friends to death talking about HIMYM)

I am glad to hear I am not the only person who thought last season was mediocre. I am also skeptical about the articles that Bays and Thomas wrote. I think it is easy in hindsight to say that season 5 sucked, but I felt that they completely built up Barney and Robin last season, screwed it up, and than back peddled by saying the two should not have been in a relationship. It feels like they are saying what they want people to hear. I wish they had owned up to their screw up back in November. Whatever.

That being said, the writers have given us 4 great seasons, and most long term tv series become stagnate. I hope this season they lay off with any Barney/Robin or Ted/Robin pairings. I loved season 3 because it is free of all that sh**t.

I am sad Neil didn’t win the emmy, despite the horror show that was season 5, he stepped it up as usual :) . I am happy he won for guest staring on Glee.

BTW, JD I can only speak for myself, but I don’t mind negative reviews at all. I think it is all about how people present things, and remain open to other people’s opinions.

  14. Toby |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 02:03 pm GMT -4

BTW, just totally random, but Jason Segal played the voice for the supervillen in the movie Despicable Me, and if I do say so myself He Rocked!!!!

  15. JD |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 03:51 pm GMT -4

So negative reviews are a go, excellent.

A lot of you watch True Blood it seems. Interesting…

  16. Ana |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 04:00 pm GMT -4

Hi there! I’m new to the blog and, in a way, to the show. I’ve read and heard lots of comments saying that the last seasons were not as great as viewers expected… I honestly wouldn’t know.
I’ve watched season 1 and 2 in only a few weeks and I’m currently watching season 3. Needless to say, I’m completely hooked!
One night, there was nothing interesting on TV and I decided to find HIMYM’s first episode – I like to start watching series from the beginning and no channel ever reran it.
I’m so glad I did. I felt like that time when I first fall in love with Friends and its characters, this was exactly the kind of sitcom I was missing! Apparently, I still got one good season left to endulge myself… I hope I can catch up and discuss the new season with you ;)

  17. Thomas |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 04:22 pm GMT -4

Nice to see you back on here JD. Thats great your enjoying your new job, and naturally its understandable that this place isn’t your first priority.

Anyway I was someone who enjoyed the majority of season five. Something I still stand by. I live in the UK and its currently being shown here on our E4 channel. The episodes I really enjoyed I have upon rewatching, a couple I wasn’t as keen on I’ve enjoyed more. Of course there are still 7 or 8 left still in the run so I’m looking forward to seeing them second time around.

Honestly I don’t have a problem if you or anyone else who posts here doesn’t like an episode. As long as people who do like it aren’t criticised there’s no problem. Of course that goes both ways.

Anyway I’m looking forward to season six. Although I wasn’t as down on the previous season, I do think there is room for improvement in some areas. Obviously there can be a big difference between what Bays and Thomas have planned and what the outcome is. But I’ve liked what I’ve read and I’m optimistic.

Also as I mentioned in the UK they are currently showing season five. I’m hoping this year that maybe by Christmas we might catch up with you guys in the US and get the season six episodes pretty fresh. Getting new episodes straight from the US seems to be becoming more of a trend here now finally. It’ll be nice to watch HIMYM episodes first time round on my proper television rather than on a computer. Hopefully!

  18. pizzaboySP |  Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 06:45 pm GMT -4

Glad to know you’re back JD!

If anyone saw that link to those pics I posted or just saw them because of some other source, what are your guys’ takes on the blonde talking to Rachel Bilson’s character Cindy? Could she be the mother?

Needles to say I’m really looking forward to the new season!

  19. katie90 |  Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 05:30 am GMT -4

@pizza: i didn’t see the pictures (did you post them in the comment section on the other post?) but i’m pretty sure the mother’s not a blonde. first of all, the faceless chick ted imagines for his perfect date in season 1 is a brunette, second there’s this scene where he imagines his kids being stella’s and they’re blonde which kind of indicates that the mom is not. otherwise it would be weird of him to think stella could only produce blond kids when his wife in fact is also a blonde ;) get my logic? i’m rambling :D

@toby: i was also glad for NPH but i don’t really see what made his glee-performance emmy-worthy..whereas in himym, he definitely should have won in season 1 through 4 ;) brad is the main werewolf on true blood, alcide herveaux (probably misspelled)

  20. LegendaryLynn |  Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 08:28 am GMT -4

welcome back! I agree this season was my least favorite…. but its my favorite show and I will always love it. I’m excited for this season because I’m hoping it’s going to be a lot better. :) And I’m obsessed with True Blood.. so when I saw that Brad was going to be added to the cast I was so excited. He does such a good job on the show! He doesn’t even look like Brad… lol But everytime he comes on the screen I always say “its Brad!” and my friends just ignore me… =/

  21. pizzaboySP |  Thursday, September 2nd, 2010 11:23 am GMT -4

@katie90 I totally forgot about that scene where he imagines his blonde kids. Good point! I think I was just so excited about the premiere that it slipped my mind. haha Here’s the link to the pictures if you want to check them out.

nph was awesome in glee. my favourite episode of the season did you not listen to/watch dream on!?! come on. he was (IS) legendary

  24. Ryno |  Friday, September 3rd, 2010 12:22 am GMT -4

I’m not sure if anybody’s mentioned it before, but in case it hasn’t:

I think an episode where Barney and Ted somehow get into the Cash Cab would be an awesome episode. They could call Marshall for their mobile shout out or something. Just their entire plot of that episode is in the Cab and have Marshall and Lily in the other plot when they call for help. I just think that would be amazing. If you haven’t heard of Cash Cab it comes on Discovery every weeknight.

  25. katie90 |  Friday, September 3rd, 2010 06:20 am GMT -4

@ncuk: yeah, sure, it was a great episode, but especially in dream on i just found mr shu’s voice so much better. nph can sing and all but it’s too high-pitched for my taste. anyway, though i did love that glee-episode (and wuold’ve really liked to see/hear a “real” version of the two of them singing piano man, not just to the stupid jukebox!!) i just thought is work on himym was way better. but i guess the competition in the supporting actor in a comedy was tougher?

  26. Jenn- GCWOK Approved |  Friday, September 3rd, 2010 04:27 pm GMT -4

Ryno- that would be awesome! It seems so real I feel like I’ve seen it.

I’m wondering if I should not watch HIMYM until I have a bunch stored up on my DVR. That way when an episode sucks, I just move right along and forget about it, like I did the first few seasons on DVD. Waiting a whole week for a disappointment seems to emphasize the diminishing quality.

  27. Alex |  Friday, September 3rd, 2010 05:28 pm GMT -4

Seriously, for this season I only want one thing : Victoria !

  28. katie90 |  Saturday, September 4th, 2010 03:18 am GMT -4

@Jenn – that’s exactly what i’ve been saying all of last season! :) i watched the first four season within a month and LOVED them but the suspense and the build-up over a whole week (or, knowing himym’s totally sucky schedule, quite often 3 to 4 weeks) is totally ruining it.

i actually tried it for a couple of episodes last season and it worked, kind of. still, it just wasn’t a very good season but waiting for it for anything from 7 days to a month just really really ruins any episode, even if it’s decent.

that said, the worst thing was slapsgiving 2 cause the expectations were SO high, anyway. i’d really loved the first one (still one of my favorite eps) and i really, really hate the second one and find it the single worst episode to date (swore to myself never to watch it again). now imagine said build-up slapsgiving 2 episode and watching it in germany right after it aired in the US – which is staying up till 3 am on a work day, then starting to download and watch it. right then and there, i vowed to never do THAT again ;)

  29. NCUK |  Saturday, September 4th, 2010 08:22 am GMT -4

@katie90 of course he is way better on himym!!!! that is a given but yeah, it is a pretty tough category and this wasn’t a great year for the show, or his character in my opinion so i don’t think he deserved it as much as other years. for sure more than the fat guy from modern family but i don’t give out the emmys!
i think i loved dream purely because of nph singing it & his chest-bump he does when he first starts singing. it has made me love that episode even though he didn’t have the best plot line

  30. BGeo |  Sunday, September 5th, 2010 03:11 pm GMT -4

Welcome back JD, and I (we) appreciate the honesty in regards to last season.

Although I liked it, I can definitely see where you are coming from, and I hope that this season marks the end of the “filler” seasons.

Congrats on the job at Vimeo

  31. FrankQB |  Monday, September 6th, 2010 02:51 pm GMT -4

Welcome back. I was just about to abandon this site for “beawesomeinstead.com” but if you’re going to make another go of this blog, I’m all ears…er, eyes, I guess.

I gotta agree that Season 5 was easily the weakest. Episodes like “Zoo or False” made me so angry at their terribleness, but yet I think tucked away in some of these episodes are little nuggets of greatness. For example, in “Zoo or False” the ending where Future Ted indicates that he may be misleading his kids with parts of the story by embellishing it has a lot of importance long term to the series’ overall story. It was a sucky episode, but it had important moments. The same goes for the whole season, IMO.

  32. Toby |  Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 12:09 am GMT -4

@Katie, they reran Girls Vs Suits tonight, and Neil’s voice isn’t as high pitched as it is in Dream On from Glee, which incidently is rerunning tomorrow.

I haven’t seen reruns of HIMYM this summer, and it was nice to see it again. I missed it; despite the mediocrity of last season. .

I am still incredibly skeptical about how this season will turn out, but at the same time am starting to look forward to it. However, the level of excitement now pales in comparison to how how I felt last year.

On another note, I just read a fun spoiler about a new love triangle on Glee. I will be happy to spill but only if ppl give me the OK. Let me know :) .

  33. katie90 |  Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 07:25 am GMT -4

@Toby: go aheaaaad! on that note: i just read on imdb that heather morris (brittany) was one of the suit dancers on himym ;) haha. paid no attention to those background people..

  34. Toby |  Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 09:27 am GMT -4

@Katie, I actually knew that. Apparantly, Heather Morris will be singing two songs in the Brittany themed episode.

So, the spoiler I read is that there will be a love triangle between Tina, Artie, and wait for it………….. other Asian!!! I am so excited for that because I have been waiting for the two of them (Mike and Matt) to actually have parts :) .

I rewatched Dream On- Matt Morrison and NPH were so sexy in that number. When Matt dragged his hand down his face during the line “all these lines on my face getting clearer” I def felt some chills.

  35. Swarlize |  Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 02:18 pm GMT -4

HI, JD! I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but never made any comments I was worried (like everybody else) by the fact that you didn’t said anything about the finale, etc. But here you are! Nice to see (read) you, and congrats on your job.

I understand if you don’t want to give any negative reviews, but I think is ok. I didn’t like season 5 either, I felt dissapointed. But It’s still my favorite show, so I can’t say I HATED season 5.

I lowered my expections for season 6, but I’m still excited, ofc

@katie90 I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT! When I saw NSMLS the first 5 times, I was trying to find out if that girl was Heather. I knew it! LOL xD

BTW, I’m watching True Blodd, too. ‘Brad’ looks great, and this season is AWESOME! –Can’t wait for the finale

    Greetings, everybody!

  36. Ana |  Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 03:49 pm GMT -4

Have you guys read this: http://bit.ly/cfTiHo? I don’t know about you, but I think she would be perfect for the role of the mother.
On another note, I’m halfway through season 4 and a bit afraid of what’s to come… I feel like there’s a huge difference when you watch a sitcom once a week in comparison to a daily basis. However, as @FrankQB said, I’ve found that no matter how seemingly silly a particular episode is, there are always little winks for those who follow the story, and that’s awesome.
Btw, I really enjoyed NPH’s Glee appearance, Dream On was a treat!

  37. High Hoper |  Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 05:29 pm GMT -4

I wouldn’t mind if she is the mother.

but she isn’t… and that’s all I can say :)

  38. katie90 |  Thursday, September 9th, 2010 06:49 am GMT -4

@ Toby: Ooookay. Other Asian is Mike, right? Who I just saw on the big screen in Step Up 3D, btw. Crappy story but that boy was awesome, just as we as in the second installment. Aaanyway, the triangle kind of creeps me out because imdb says he’s Harry Chang and she’s called Tina Cohen-Chang. Well, either they are related (um…eww? ;) ) or they’re implying that Chang is a very common Asian name – which I know is true but seriously, couldn’t they have sprung for another asian last name?! Anyway. Still looking forward to the season and also that storyline because clearly, Mike doesn’t habe enough to do. I hear Santana and Brittany are regulars now? I hope they don’t overdo the whole “haha, we make out with each other” thing, that got kind of annoying in the first season.

Aaaaaand I really wouldn’t see Jennifer Morrison as the mom. Plus, I still don’t think we get to meet Mom earlier than the very end and also I do think they’d try to keep the actress under wraps a little, wouldn’t they?

  39. Ana |  Thursday, September 9th, 2010 09:52 am GMT -4

@High Hoper, what do you know that you aren’t telling? :P

@Katie90, I guess you’ve got a point there. So, we can add her (Minka Kelly and Jacinda Barrett) to the list of actresses who have the least chance of turning out to be the mother? :) Anyways, I’d like to see her in a sitcom, even if it’s only for a couple of episodes…

  40. katie90 |  Thursday, September 9th, 2010 06:52 pm GMT -4

    http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2010/09/09/jennifer-morrison-how-i-met-your-mother-ted/?xid=rss-feed-todayslatest-“HIMYM’: Jennifer Morrison’s in!

So, I guess that means we’ll be seeing a lot of Morrison. 13 episodes was it, right? I don’t know if I buy into a really big relationship for Ted before the mom comes. I mean, think about it. How many truly big, important relationships does one get in a lifetime? We had him with Victoria, which was short but somewhat emotionally intense, pining over Robin for a year and then together with her for another year, engaged to Stella – and that’s just the last couple of years, who knows what happened between Karen and Victoria ;) Which kind of gets me started on his sex life, cause for such a romantic, Ted’s numbers sure are up there. But hey, it’s a sitcom, it doesn’t need to be wholly realistic.

Anyone else think Morrison is kind of..bland? To me, she doesn’t give off the cool, funny vibe she needs to have to hold her own amongst these AWESOME people. But we’ll see!

It’d be interesting if the finally incorporated her into the group, I think you always knew a relationship wasn’t going to last because they never really hung around with all of the guys (except for Victoria (or maybe Ictor? ;) ) on freakishly awesome Game Night and Stella in..well, I guess the coolest bar in new Jersey).

  41. Matthew |  Thursday, September 9th, 2010 10:30 pm GMT -4

I know Im a bit late, but I was totally surprised when I came back to find out JC was back. Thats awesome though, just dont ever leave again ! :)

The past season was very much syndication season for me, and thats normally a bad time for any sitcom. It remains to be seen if HIMYM can get back to the paks it has (and more importantly .. a character like Barney has a limited life span in a sitcom)

Assuming this is also Jason Segels last season, it will be interesting to see what happens there.

  42. PaKo89 |  Friday, September 10th, 2010 05:19 am GMT -4

Why would it be Segals last season??
They all have a contract till season 8.

  43. katie90 |  Friday, September 10th, 2010 05:38 am GMT -4

Matthew: PaKo’s right, while JS has hinted that he wants out, he is under contract for a couple more seasons. Problem is that it always shows when people do a show against their wishes, a sitcom no less, where you have to be genuinely funny..

  44. PaKo89 |  Friday, September 10th, 2010 10:53 am GMT -4

I dont think JS is doing it against his wishes, I mean HIMYM has brought him all the things he’s working on now.

  45. Matthew |  Friday, September 10th, 2010 08:08 pm GMT -4

I just dont see JS going the full 8 seasons contract or not.You .. might.. get 7 out of him, but 8 seasons is a loong time. Hes a creative guy and you can easily sense he wants to move onto things he has more creative control over. Plus his characters is more or less locked into ‘happily married’ now and that must be incredibly stifling for an actor.

  46. katie90 |  Saturday, September 11th, 2010 07:05 am GMT -4

JS or not, I really, really hope this show does NOT extend beyond 7 seasons.. They’re struggling to fill five decent ones, there’s no way they can do 8 and not have some of them totally suck. Putting all my hope into 6 – i won’t recover as a himym fan from two sucky seasons ;)

  47. katie90 |  Saturday, September 11th, 2010 06:31 pm GMT -4

PS anyone else always read “urine” instead of “ursine” on JD’s post? :D

  48. Swarlize |  Sunday, September 12th, 2010 12:32 am GMT -4

@katie90 I agree with you. I’ve always thought that 7 seasons are perfect for the show.

  49. Toby |  Sunday, September 12th, 2010 08:29 pm GMT -4

Swarlize and Katie90, I am in agreement that 7 seasons is enough for this show.

  50. Matthew |  Sunday, September 12th, 2010 08:34 pm GMT -4

Did I read right, there will be a Pussycat Doll in a Robin Sparkles upcoming episode?

  51. Swarlize |  Sunday, September 12th, 2010 11:33 pm GMT -4

@Matthew Yes, sir, Nicole is going to be Jessica… Wich leads us to the question: Who’s Tori? xD

  52. katie90 |  Monday, September 13th, 2010 06:08 am GMT -4

Anyone else find it weird that himym almost always has musical guest actors (enrique, mandy moore, britney, jennifer lopez, that country chick i forgot the name of cause she’s famous only in the US and now nicole s.) and hardly ever people you’d recognize from their acting work? (yeah yeah, i know, britney, moore and lopez have also acted but i still think it’s odd)

i am listening to dream on right now. completely by accident. that is also still awesome. my housemate and I still do the microphone chest bump movement that nph does when he starts singing when we listen to it sometimes. i recommend watching a video of the song so you can see this though i imagine it is probably one of those things that like 3 people ever find interesting.
