Season 5, Episode 13: Jenkins Discussion

I didn’t realize until after the episode that tonight marked Neil Patrick Harris’s directing debut. Well done sir! That explains why Barney was barely in the episode. For a show who has had only one director, more or less, tonight didn’t feel like a huge departure. If anything, it felt more like a return to form than some other recent episodes including last week.
That feeling, I think, was more due to the writing. The biggest impact NPH seemed to have was a general feeling of fun that ran throughout the cast. It seemed like somebody was playing his get psyched mix before each take. I’m going to follow the same format as last week since it seemed to be popular.

0:30

If Marshall is Big Fudge and he used to be Vanilla Thunder, are we to take it his next nickname will be The Big Penuche?

1:14

I hope this is a more Marshall episode, we need one of those. I often wonder if I went to visit the set, if I would be offered an opportunity to be on camera, looking like an idiot. Then I wonder if I’d take it. Would I be Jenkins? Hard to say.

2:14

“I want to wear Jenkins like a sock”. That’s gross.

2:22

Oh snap, Amanda Peet! Right? She looks crazy young but definitely has the vaguely feline, huge-mouth (but in a hot way) Amanda Peet thing going.

2:51

“The whole ‘Jenkins peed out the window of a cab’ story?” “Much more impressive now, isn’t it?” It’s very classic of the show to pull a bait-and-switch like this. It’s a clever move to show Ted assuming what Jenkins looks like based on the stories.

3:03

“Hey four eyes, new lawyer. Watch out for this guy, he steals stuff.” I love the lawyer douches on the show.

3:34

Is that Amanda Peet? If it isn’t, it looks a hell of a lot like her. I haven’t seen her in a movie since…Identity? She was on Studio 60 but I’ve blocked most of that out. It is nice to finally show Marshall interested in another woman. His whole “Lily’s the only one for me” thing was getting tired.

4:57

“That Marshall’s going to buy her a horse.” “You are? That’s so awesome, I love those things!” Funny Robin is back. The joke even made it out of that turtleneck.

6:57

A Small, but Significant, Cheese Incident. That’s fantastic. I still can’t decide if that’s Amanda Peet. This woman looks so damn young.

8:17

It’s been awhile since they were mean to Marshall, a couple seasons now.

9:17

Desperate for attention Robin works better here than as a woo girl.

10:10

“I had a drinking game with Robin too. Actually, it was on Robin. I’d pour peach schnapps into her belly button” “Dude, we said we weren’t going to do this” “You’re right. Robin didn’t like it either. She said it woke her up.” I love that Barney comes in at night and pours liqueurs on his lady’s navel.

11:50

What is going on with Marshall’s hair? It looks like the hairpiece he tried to wear on his wedding. Also, it is funny the way he trapped Lily into saying something he’d already decided to be mad about. Guys totally do that.

13:20

Full on Lady-Wood. This is a fact. Even something stupid like skeeball is enough to entice a lady. It’s basic emotional response: anytime you can demonstrate proficiency in something, it’s attractive. I’ve seen girls swoon watching a good round of Big Buck Hunter. True story. That can’t be Amanda Peet, I would’ve read about it somewhere and she’s way too young. Strong resemblance however.

14:42

“Which would mean last night when Barney and I played it I didn’t get super wasted and throw up all over myself. Oh wait! I did both of those things. So, FACE!” Ah Ted, such a strange man.

14:47

What the hell is up with not-Amanda-Peet’s hair? First Marshall, now her? Did the show have budget cutbacks or did a stylist lose a bet or something?

16:09

“That woman kissed me, her tongue was in my mouth. It was thick, and rough, like a starfish arm.” I want to believe that was a Segel adlib because that’s fantastic.

18:26

“Sorry I had sex with you in the mail room” That has to be Amanda Peet, right?

19:09

She just said “for peet’s sake” now they’re just messing with me. Is she the plucky yet sexy Amanda Peet or not? I have to look it up. *Googleing music* DAMN you IMDB, no actress listed for Jenkins, though that fat fuck who played the male version gets a billing. For shame! That probably means it’s not her though as she’s a big enough name that it’d be listed.

20:03

I love how Lily was casually taking off her outer layers and removing her earrings.

That was a good episode. Lots of laughs, nothing too serious. It didn’t feel like it was pandering or working too broad. The pacing and blocking felt natural, overall I can’t complain too much. I’m especially pleased Robin and Marshall had more to do this week and it was OK for NPH to take a back seat (in the director’s chair nonetheless).

PS. I had to know. I went to TV.com and they had it: Amanda Peet. I knew it! She looks fantastic for her age (she’s 37) and I’m still a great big fan of her.

man I loved this episode! probably one of the best so far this season!

  2.  JD | January 19, 2010 @ 2:00 am

High Hoper, I was smiling as I wrote my review because I looked forward to hearing about how much you hated the episode. Stop watching if you aren’t enjoying the show but if you watch, please do comment. The comments are not only for people who like the show, they’re for everyone! If people are getting bummed out because of your negative reviews then they can skip past your name. I like to hear what you have to say and I want you to stick around.

  3.  Kirk | January 19, 2010 @ 2:07 am

NPH said on the Jimmy Kimmel show a few weeks ago that Amanda Peet was the guest…

    Good episode…

one of the better of the season

  4.  Jack Package | January 19, 2010 @ 3:02 am

    I thought Blauman was dead?

  5.  Hannah | January 19, 2010 @ 4:08 am

AMAZING episode. all the little quirks put in were great. I liked the quote by Marshall about the “cat or monkey, depending on the game of Risk we have been playing for three years”
Def top three of the season, Robin 101 is still my fav.
Sidenote – I know a girl with the last name Jenkins. She looks so similar to Amanda Peet it is astonishing, and she drinks and frats out like one of the boys. I swear they based this Jenkins off of her

  6.  Hannah | January 19, 2010 @ 4:10 am

oh, and Robin looked back to her nomal self this epsiode, I think she got a haircut or something.
And I agree with JD, I was too distracted by Marshall’s hair to really focus on what he was saying when he was arguing with Lily

  7.  KJO | January 19, 2010 @ 4:45 am

def amanda peet. ur right about her looking great tho, they musta botoxed her up or something.

  8.  Keep | January 19, 2010 @ 6:02 am

I actually enjoyed this one. It felt like it was from season 3 or something, which is most definitely a good thing.

Marshall was finally funny again, as was Ted. Ted’s a romantic, yah, but let’s be honest, he’s hilariously weird. We need more weird Ted. Basically, whenever this show really focuses on the quirks they’ve given their characters, it makes it that much better.

  9.  High Hoper | January 19, 2010 @ 6:22 am

    Thanks JD.

I don’t wanna be the “the-show-sucks guy”, because you know I love himym, and if I criticize it is because it matters to me. If it was some other tv show, I’d probably not write about it.

For example, the playbook had 0 of mother action. But still, was the last episode I enjoyed from start to finish. The window? I actually liked a part of it. And the 12th, well, I have rewatched it like 4 times, and the more I watch it, I find some details thanks to your review that I didn’t know they were there.

But also, i have to say that yesterday’s episode didn’t do it for me. I found the amanda peet role kind of lame.

I was hoping for this episode to be a “season changer” like ten sessions was in season 3. Why? I was expecting to the marshall kisses jenkins to be an incident that becomes a rough patch between lily and marshall. Ok, we know in the end they’re together and stuff, but would it be too serious for writers to handle the possible rough patch between lily and marshall? I mean, season1 could handle it (nothing good ever happens after 2am), but I feel the show being less serialized and less “capable of seriousness” than previous seasons. It’s hard for me to see a regular episode because, as someone told before (not on this episode, on previous episodes), they’re becoming “the more jokes I can put on this, the better it will be”, and it’s not like that.

Remember the line “gay for you” that Marshall said to Lily? At first, I didn’t like it, and boom, I used it the other day and said “well, it’s funny”.

In my defence, as I don’t like Lily talking, I have to say she is beautiful, more than Robin, this season. One thing is that I don’t like their lines, but she is gorgeous.

Well, I don’t wanna continue. Maybe I end liking more the episode…

ps: for all of you that say I am a hater of the show, I was working (although I couldn’t end it yet due to personal stuff) on a special song and video for the 100th episode, JD knows that, and I’ll maybe use it for the season finale. That’s just “how i hate the show”…

  10.  danny | January 19, 2010 @ 6:33 am

Hey jd, glad that you back on track for posting the review and discussion on time, =)

About this episode, i always enjoying my time watching HIMYM but definitely this one is not my favorite.

i dont know if this is just me or anyone else feel it too, but i feel that this season is not memorable like the first two season.. I wonder, where is the familiar stuff of barney like “Suit Up!!”, “legendary!!”, and “awesome!” catchphrase gone, but i kinda missed those things..

i also noticing that the lovely multilayered raincoat from the last cigarette ever episode is coming bank agan.. it’s always a pleasure watching robin wearing it..

and, is anyone noticing too that the girl in ted’s classroom, the one who talks about the “but.. umm” thing on robin wearing the same sweat shirt that robin used in Shelter Island episode? (just sharing one trivial fact here.. =) )

overall, good episode, not too legendary, but of course i still love it..

  11.  Rainy | January 19, 2010 @ 7:04 am

This episode really is great! I laugh like crazy, it does has a sense of the older (good) episodes and Robin & Marshall, they’re hilarious! Really into this one!!!!

  12.  Tove | January 19, 2010 @ 7:11 am

Yay Marshall story! And a good one! But seriously, what was up with the hair?
I thought this was an easy-going and funny ep.

  13.  Thomas | January 19, 2010 @ 8:11 am

Another real funny episode, was great to have a Marshall-centric one again. I loved the drinking game stuff too! Reminds me of the 24 one where people would have a drink every time Jack Bauer said “Damn it!” Then when Kiefer Sutherland heard about it he made sure to throw in a few more “Damn It!”’s on their behalf! In England the drinking game I’m most familiar with is to do with one of our sports presenters Jeff Stelling who is a bit of a legend. Though its a bit more complicated than a shot for every “But um”.

  14.  Gisella | January 19, 2010 @ 9:15 am

For the 100th episode I read a post from High Hoper, Now I just skip those comments, I don’t want to be rude, but I come here to have a great time commenting on one of my favourites shows, not the opposite.

I love this episode, I think that Marshall and Robn participation was so good. And Robin says a lot of “but-um” (just watch any channel Alot of people have tics..!!) I also like Ted and the interaction with his students.. Ted deserves a great woman!

The last part was hilarious!! Robin and her revenge!!.. Sometimes I would love do that..!

    Greetings from Chile!!

    (rolling eyes)

  16.  Ari | January 19, 2010 @ 10:01 am

Okay totally don’t wanna be a brat but… while I usually enjoy your recaps, hearing you go back and forth about whether it was Amanda Peet or not was ridiculously annoying. I knew it was her from the beginning, I had heard about it back when I had heard NPH was going to direct the 101st episode. Plus it totally looked like her. C’mon.

Otherwise, a nice recap and I actually enjoyed the episode. Gave me a few laughs, which is always nice and pretty much all I expect from the show! I did miss having NPH around more.

  17.  Purple Giraffe | January 19, 2010 @ 11:05 am

Damn. I sometimes really feel like the writers are actively trying to break my heart everytime they mention the fact that Marshall is a Vikes fan. It is simply awful.

however, after I cringed and maybe screamed a little bit at that short conversation between Marshall and Jenkins, I really enjoyed this episode. The drinking game was hilarious and I liked how the skee ball thing was a call back to Game Night and the fact that Marshall is unbeatable at games. It was also nice to see that Marshall can at least speak to a woman who isn’t Lily. I also really enjoy how Ted relates to his students. I don’t really have too much to say about this episode, just that it was hilarious.

  18.  Dandolion | January 19, 2010 @ 11:36 am

    JD
DUDE I told you that it was Amanda Peet in the previous comment stream. She looks great because she is “Glowing” That’s right she’s pregnant. Even though we started making jokes about hiding the girl’s bellies late in their pregnancies we are good at shooting around them.

Whenever he character was drunk or had just recently been drunk Ms Peet messed up her own hair. That was cute to watch. The woman is very funny and has no inhibitions she’s just amazing. Though, . . well never mind.

  19.  Dandolion | January 19, 2010 @ 11:41 am

I may be wrong but the Drinking game that this reminds me of is the Star trek ( tos) “he’s Dead Jim” Game. Knowing carter and craig that may be the game that this is based on.

  20.  Josh | January 19, 2010 @ 11:44 am

“Okay totally don’t wanna be a brat but… while I usually enjoy your recaps, hearing you go back and forth about whether it was Amanda Peet or not was ridiculously annoying.”

Hahaha I actually thought it was the best part of the recap and this week’s episode in general for that matter (How did you miss the kajillion CBS promos about Peet guest starring? Maybe I just have been watching WAY too much football on that network recently).

After last week’s epic 100th, this was such a predictable let-down. We all knew that Marshall would want Jenkins to tell Lilly, we all knew that Jenkins was a mess from playing the drinking game, we all knew Lilly would beat her up when she heard it from her own mouth.

Just a weak offering all the way around, but I’ve never liked the Marshall filler episodes anyway.

  21.  JD | January 19, 2010 @ 12:09 pm

Thanks Josh, I thought it’d be a funny running gag. Can’t please everyone I suppose. I really was going back and forth about it.

I don’t have cable and don’t watch TV other than the shows I download so I am lucky enough to never see promos for things. I hate promos, trailers, previews, and everything like that. It’s why I don’t post previews on the site (video ones anyway).

  22.  Jess | January 19, 2010 @ 12:19 pm

Maybe Jason’s hair is that way for a movie. Remember when he was filming I Love You, Man. His hair looked like butt.

    Otherwise, great episode!

  23.  Nashid | January 19, 2010 @ 12:26 pm

Good episode, man. This episode was really good. The “But! UM” joke was hilarious.

  24.  Canadianwingman | January 19, 2010 @ 12:48 pm

I posted this yesterday but I wanted to re-post to add to the highhoper discussions and the talk about Jason Segal’s hair! What is WITH that guy?

BTW, I also thought Ted’s line about Robin’s drinking game was CLASSIC Ted. I love the way he says super lame things in such an excited way that they seem relatively cool. A top 10 line.

    canadianwingman | january 19, 2010 @ 1:09 am
because nph directed it i think he probably chose to be focused less in this episode… i mean, if he’s in the scene, it’s harder to view the scene from all angles right? only makes sense. i thought he did a fantastic job, the guy is so damn talented!!
i really enjoyed this episode, i even loved ted so desperately wanting to be “cool” with his students that he offered to pay for the booze.
i often get stuck watching “accidentally on purpose” after this show. and i hate it! like it’s awful! the jokes are stupid and predictable, the premise is lame and it has nothing interesting. if you think you didn’t like himym, watch this garbage and you will be glad carter and craig have created such an awesome show that’s funny on multiple levels and closely mirrors many peoples lives. there’s nothing better than himym at it’s best, and tonight was very good. also, amanda peete is hot.
i love marshall because i don’t think he owns a comb. you see his hair this entire episode, just a freaking mess, i don’t know how he walks around like that. i thought robin had probably her best episode of the season, and she’s back a little bit to classic robin. lily punching out jenkins at the end of the show was great too.

  25.  snorremans | January 19, 2010 @ 12:51 pm

JD i didnt mind the Peet pieces in the review although i dont know here at all

  26.  JRod | January 19, 2010 @ 12:59 pm

It’s Amanda Peet. Check this link: http://www.tvguide.com/tvshows/met-mother/cast/192257

  27.  Jazzer | January 19, 2010 @ 1:23 pm

Just saw the epiode. This, was, really, really, reeeally entertaining. =D It didn’t have not one bad moment. Lily wasn’t a *SNITCH* (yeah, I know xD, just came to me), Robin wasn’t acting like a bimbo, and Marshall’s performance was just amazing!

This is what SE05 episode should be like! At first, when I saw the plot of the episode, I was really dissapointed. Since, most of the time, episodes with that kind of plots, turn out sucky. This one didn’t. This one did wonders.

Missed Marshall’s character so much, so this was just, perfect. Sure, we didn’t get to see that much NPH, but he should take a break. He was, basically, the main character of the past few episodes. It’s nice to see someone else take the lead.

I had more laughs then usual, and it was really good, again. I miss these episodes. Anyway, a very pleasuring episode, so no bad things to say, even though I thought there will be. =]

Great recap JD, keep it up.

  28.  Mike | January 19, 2010 @ 1:42 pm

I really enjoyed this episode. As for High Hoper, your expectations for the show often befuddle (a word that is not used commonly enough) me, and your comments about this episode are no exception. For someone who complains as frequently as you do about your percieved lack of progress on the whole Meeting the Mother storyline, I don’t understand why you would want this episode begin a storyline that shifts the focus to Marshall and Lilly.
Futhermore, if you want to see a rough patch between Marshall and Lilly, I suggest you watch the end of Season 1. Or the beginning of season 2. Or the storyline in Season 3 where Lilly is hiding her credit card debt from Marshall. Lilly and Marshall going through a rough patch has been pretty well covered by the writers at this point. Those stories were done well the first time, and I don’t think we need to see another extended rough patch for Marshall and Lilly.
Also, we know the show isn’t as serialized as it used be. We get it. But if you really look back at the last 4 seasons of the show as a whole, each of them has brought Ted closer to both meeting The Mother and becoming the person that he needs to be in order to meet her. That was the premise Bays and Carter sold us from the start, and the show has never strayed away from that.
Also, I enjoyed the recap for the most part, but I’m going to have to agree with Ari that the Amanda Peet thing was super annoying to read. I saw Amanda Peet, and my first thought was “Hey, I didn’t know Amanda Peet was in this episode,” then I moved on. Perhaps this new fomat for recaping the episodes might be better served by a little bit of editing?

  29.  bro | January 19, 2010 @ 2:40 pm

JD – I liked the old review format much better. It was much more well thought out and organized. I think the old format forced you to think about the series more broadly and as a result, your inights about overall themes were really interesting. The stream of consciousness thing is very limited in my opinion. That said, thanks as always for keeping this site up and running.

  30.  Picher5 | January 19, 2010 @ 3:01 pm

Long time watcher first time writing, blahblahblah…

I just come by here to tell you how much I like this blog and to point out something in this episode that intrigued me :

    - The guy who introduce Jenkins to Marshall, isn’t he Blauman ? Isn’t he supposed to be dead ?
    - And th male version of Jenkins, could it be Food Guy ?

Thanks for this blog anyway !

  31.  Leigh | January 19, 2010 @ 3:27 pm

Good episode – but how has NO ONE commented on the ‘Taken’ reference?? When Jenkins asks Marshall if he is really a Vikings fan:
“My wife knows I’m here. She doesn’t have a lot of money, but what she does have is a set of very special skills”. It’s the best line from the badass speech that Liam Neeson gives! KUDOS to the writers for that one, I loved it.

That’s all I have for now, since I’m on company time and the boss man is due back any minute. Thanks JD!

  32.  Come on | January 19, 2010 @ 3:37 pm

yeah, you are totally an Amanda Peet’s fan…

  33.  jen209 | January 19, 2010 @ 3:41 pm

Here’s my chronological reaction to reading your re-cap:

    o:25: Yes, it’s Amanda Peet.

1:00: Yep, it really is Amanda Peet.

1:30: Seriously yes, it’s Amanda Peet.

2:00: FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, IT’S AMANDA PEET!

Consider this my vote for going back to the old format for episode recaps. :)

This one was pretty good – and Robyn & Ted’s analysis of relationships, that there is always a reacher and a settler, was mostly true and thought provoking.

  34.  Come on | January 19, 2010 @ 4:02 pm

jen209 is right. Old format was better.

  35.  High Hoper | January 19, 2010 @ 4:29 pm

Thanks Mike for your clarification, finally a polite message without telling me to stop watching or that I should go away. Thanks, really.

Now I’m gonna answer some emails ;)

I like both styles of recaps. JD, whatever you want to do, it’s perfect for me :)

  36.  JT | January 19, 2010 @ 4:42 pm

Hey are there any Platoon (with Charlie Sheen, 1986) fans out there? Didn’t the sequences with Ted’s class losing (and about to lose) to Robin’s “But,um” attack with the classic dramatic music (Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings) seem like they were influenced by the film (esp when Elias in Platoon dies)?

  37.  Toby | January 19, 2010 @ 4:42 pm

I liked this episode a lot; and I didn’t think I would like something that was so Barney lite. I loved the drinking game; I want to play!!!

I actually was on the phone today and used the phrase but, um. I had to force myself not to laugh out loud because it was a professional phone call.

I wonder who was the reacher/settler in Barney and Robin’s relationship?

High Hopper, I totally respect your opinion, and i think you are entitled to say whatever you want about the show. I am sorry that you aren’t happy with it anymore

Katie09, Don’t stop watching!!! I like your comments even if we don’t always agree

Personally, I like the stand alone episodes as I think they turn out to be my favorites. I also could give two sh-ts about who the mother is, so it doesn’t bother me that they don’t focus on it. I think if we found out who the mother is than it would be the beginning of the end of the show, and that would just make me sad.

  38.  jen209 | January 19, 2010 @ 4:52 pm

P.S. here’s another drinking game, this one music-related: take a shot every time Sting sings “Roxanne” in the classic song. The best part is that you won’t feel the alcohol by the end of the song, since it’s only like 3 minutes long – but in about 20 minutes, you’ll definitely feel it.

  39.  BGeo | January 19, 2010 @ 4:53 pm

So in the other form a couple of you asked about the pierre mcguire drinking game.

Here is the World Jr version, but my buddies and I made a Flames version as well.

    Enjoy

  40.  Toby | January 19, 2010 @ 5:02 pm

I was out some where a few weeks ago where they did the drinking game for Roxanne. It was pretty funny to watch.

  41.  Scoundrel | January 19, 2010 @ 5:52 pm

    @high hoper

I totally agree about the lack of “seriousness capability” of the show, but this is also the reason I didn’t like “The Playbook” at all.

When I decide to not like an episode, it’s not because it wasn’t funny enough. “The Playbook” made me laugh a lot. I look at it, and I look at this season’s episodes (and half of season four), and I ask myself where is season one’s charm? Barney had become the leading character, and it is not healthy for HIMYM.

The thing about the show is that it’s dealing with real life issues: Ted’s search for true love, Robin’s failure as a news reporter, Marshall’s struggle between money and principles… and then there’s Barney, the caricature of the show. He kinda lives in another dimension where acts don’t have consequences, his job’s awesome, he doesn’t need to deal with money issues, etc. At the beginning of the show, Barney was about the same, but less.. exaggerated. Now he gets to have almost the entire 100th episode, when there are 3 other main characters (LAMER) without any screen time at all. “Girls vs. Suits” and “The Playbook” are only two examples of how “how i met your mother” became “how i got laid by claiming my penis grants wishes”.

Although I think this seasons is not that bad, this episode was OK. It didn’t do it for me either, probably because I don’t had enough of these one-episode-plots and I want to see a progress. Robin’s coat appeared again in this episode. I like that. We don’t really get to see a character wearing something twice, but here it seems like they are real people with a real, limited wardrobe.

  42.  Scoundrel | January 19, 2010 @ 5:57 pm

    BTW jd,
i see the comment’s text is bold. is it just me? is there a reason for that? it just that it makes it more difficult for me to read the comments.

  43.  Ryan | January 19, 2010 @ 6:15 pm

Back to the more classic HIMYM style! Thought this was a great episode with memorable and quotable moments like “BIG FUDGE” and “But um”.

Canadianwingman- I completely agree about the grammar! The punctuation is only taken away on ONE of my computers, however. The other one leaves it. So maybe half of the people reading this think that your punctuation is excellent. :)

I loved this episode. Really. Loved it. The last two have seemed back to normal for me.

Last night I watched the bonus feature on Disc 3 of Season 4. It was a discussion panel in which NPH left to go to the restroom and accidentally left his microphone on while he talked to people in the halls and things. The cast and audience was laughing so hard- it was hilarious! You don’t really get to see them sincerely crack up in episodes very often, because they’re trying to cover it or the jokes have been told over and over by that take so it’s their “acting” laugh. In any case, it was pretty funny.

    @JT
ur damn right man..it called Adagio for Strings and the composer is Samuel Barber
and how weird is that..i made a mix CD today and it has the same song ..then after that i watched the episode at night ..a crazy world :D
and btw that episode wasn’t that awesome..it was only “an assistant under secretary of only OK” ..greetings from Syria ;)

  46.  David | January 19, 2010 @ 9:52 pm

    really boring episode… too bad

  47.  Fabio | January 19, 2010 @ 10:32 pm

AWESOME EPISODE…but blauman had died!!! what’s up with that? lol

  48.  Canadianwingman | January 19, 2010 @ 11:30 pm

    UPDATE ON BLAUMAN

The actor who played Blauman is named Taran Killiam. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he is Cobie Smulders baby daddy. That’s right, he ALSO banged Robin.

The actor also returned in the episode “Sorry, Bro” last year where he mocked Marshall’s co-worker in the gym for having injured his leg (he’s seen with Bilson) in that scene. Both of his recent returns have been unnamed, (ie. no one ever calls him “Blauman”). We all remember the story from “Chain of Screaming” in season 3 about Blauman passing away.

My theory is that the writers like the actor so much, and Cobie has perhaps put some pressure on them to recast her bf. He does a great job in his limited office scenes, and takes nothing off the table. So yeah, it’s not ideal because he’s supposed to be dead, he’s never been called “Blauman” so it’s not technically a continuity error.

If it becomes a big deal I could see them explaining it in a truly HIMYM way, like he’s a clone or something. At least, that’s what your Uncle Marshall claimed.

  49.  Purple Giraffe | January 19, 2010 @ 11:47 pm

My theory about Blauman is that Barney just made up a story about someone telling off their boss and dying just to support his theory about the chain of screaming. It definitely seems like something Barney would do.

  50.  Fabio | January 20, 2010 @ 5:00 am

    @purple giraffe

    true story..

  51.  Starney Binson | January 20, 2010 @ 11:45 am

There really ought to be a HIMYM drinking game.

Take a shot every time Lily says something that makes you want to kick a puppy.

Take a shot whenever Marshall looks fatter than normal.

Take a shot when Ted makes an awkward joke that no one laughs at (“But Ums Up!”)

Take a shot whenever Robin’s Canadian accent slips through

Take a shot whenever Barney makes you jealous you’re not him

Take a shot for every classic movie reference in the show (Apocalypse Now! ftw, btw)

  52.  Nonblonde | January 20, 2010 @ 2:58 pm

Starney Binson: LOL! Totally. (fist bump)

Loved this episode in so many ways! I’m so glad Marshall got his own storyline, and that it was a good one! Also it was refreshing to see him with another woman after the “Lily is the only one for me no one else could ever be as amazing or attractive as her”-crap he tried to pull last week… Even though he didn’t specifically say he wanted Jenkins but I’m assuming because he’s a guy and you like anyone who rubs your ego the right way hahaha…

I have to say though, the best part for me was easily when Lily kicked the crap out of Jenkins; not so much for the gag itself, but because it reminded me of what that the show I was watching isn’t just another sit-com. Because I really thought the entire Lily/Marshall/Jenkins storyline would end with Jenkins admitting to Lily what had happened, and then Lily going “Ooooh I see what you’re doing, you’re STILL trying to convince me you kissed! Haha sorry Marshall – Jenkins – but I’m not falling for it”. Or something like that… Cause’ that’s what other sit-coms would do, they’d go for the cheapest and most predictable laugh.

So when I saw Lily removing her ear-rings and understood she was going to go ghetto on Jenkins, I actually was surprised! Which is kind of embarrasing since I’m supposed to like this show, still I believed it would sink to the level of, say, 2½ men… But yeah, that made me realize why I like this show so much – it doesn’t fall in the usual sit-commy traps!

And btw… Look; I love Ted. In a giddy, fan-girly manner. Ted is perfect in every aspect: funny in a nerdy way, smart and just as douché as I am when it comes to correcting people! :D So reading that some of you praise the fact that the writers made him less whiny/annoying (among other things?) this season makes me sad.. Whiny? Annoying? Whaaat? Anyone care to explain this? :(

  53.  Amanda | January 20, 2010 @ 6:46 pm

Overall, the episode was rather meh this week for me. I much preferred last week’s. And JD, I miss your old style of reviews. I feel like I got more out of it than the new stream of consciousness.

  54.  BGeo | January 20, 2010 @ 11:03 pm

As for Blauman, can’t we assume that Barney either exaggerated his story for effect or Ted is an unreliable story teller?

  55.  BGeo | January 20, 2010 @ 11:04 pm

Sorry to double post, but after watching this episode again, I liked it much more (as with all himym episodes)

  56.  Thomas | January 21, 2010 @ 10:11 am

Here is a link to an actual HIMYM drinking game, and it’s a little more detailed than “But um…” – http://www.drinkiwiki.com/How_I_Met_Your_Mother

  57.  Canadianwingman | January 21, 2010 @ 12:53 pm

What disappoints me about that drinking game is maybe what has disappointed me a little bit in the evolution of the show, most of those things don’t happen anymore. The “awesomes” the high fives, the legendaries. Even Barney’s “I’m Ted’s best friend” stuff. Oh well, I’ll have to play while watching dvd’s :)

  58.  alissss | January 21, 2010 @ 1:15 pm

does anybody know the name of the hip-hop/r’n'b song when marshall tells ted jenkin is a woman? the one when ted remembers all the stories marshall told him. s5ep13 at 4:30 xd help me please

  59.  Starney Binson | January 21, 2010 @ 3:26 pm

    Canadianwingman,
Hence why my drinking game is adapted to modern HIMYM

  60.  Where is Carl? | January 21, 2010 @ 5:46 pm

I have never posted here before, but I have watched every episode about 20 times each. is anyone else dissapointed that Ted is no longer “vomit free since ‘93″ ?

Other than that i loved this episode and for the most part all of seaosn 5. The characters can’t be the same people for ever. They need to evolve and I think that is what this seaosn has brought to the table.

  61.  Komkoj | January 21, 2010 @ 6:26 pm

He also vomited when he was re-returning

  62.  High Hoper | January 21, 2010 @ 8:24 pm

By the way, next monday there will be a rerun of the sexless innkeeper… no new episode.

  63.  Jenn- GCWOK Approved | January 21, 2010 @ 10:15 pm

I just read an interview with Cobie Smulders and it turns out that she pretty much has the same opinions as I do on Robin’s character… especially with regards to Barney & Robin.

  64.  katie90 | January 22, 2010 @ 5:39 am

toby, i said i stopped watching, not commenting :D it’s still fun to read you guys’ comments, which i’ll continue to do since i’m not scared of spoilers and stuff (cause, as you said, i also really don’t care about the mother).
i already downloaded the episode, i just want til wait til the finale so that i can watch a couple of episodes in one sitting. i figure that’s why i basically loved every episode from season 1 up to halfway through four, because a friend gave them to me and i just watched them ALL. so, if you see a not-so-great-one, you kind of don’t notice cause the next one’s already there. don’t know if that’s gonna work now since i do believe the episodes are worse and it’s not just heightened expectations, but we’ll see

also toby, did you read that cobie interview jenn posted? she seems to think the way you do, along the lines of “barney and robin as a couple were right but it’s been handled wrong”. and she also thinks robin’s gotten too slutty. plus points for cobie in my eyes :)

JD, i also liked your old way of reviewing better, mainly because i think it must really suck for you to write while watching. i mean, doesn’t it kind of take all the fun out for you? do you pause and write and play or just hastily type while watching? either way..sit back, relax, enjoy and watch, we don’t mind if it takes a little to post your reviews :)

also i love how “the episode was meh” seems to be a legitimate comment around here. i use it myself and i don’t know why but it cracks me up. “meh”. in germany, i could never pass what is basically a sound effect off as a comment on something :D

  65.  Synbios | January 22, 2010 @ 6:14 am

the ‘is she Amanda Peet?’ thing happened to me aswell ^_^

  66.  Tanay | January 22, 2010 @ 10:10 am

Observation- The Jenkins Ted imagines is the Food Guy of Marshal’s office from episode 20 season 4…..

  67.  Canadianwingman | January 22, 2010 @ 11:50 am

@ Tanay…I noticed that immediately when the episode started, the production team isn’t afraid to re-use actors if they like them

  68.  Jenn- GCWOK Approved | January 23, 2010 @ 2:44 pm

Katie- I completely agree with you about the DVD thing! If an episode wasn’t that great you just watch another one and fall in love with the show all over again :) I’m sure it would be MUCH better to wait and watch this season like that…. but I have no self-control whatsoever.

  69.  Jenn- GCWOK Approved | January 23, 2010 @ 5:10 pm

Oh my gosh! I did NOT realize that Jimmy the Overly-Touchy Orderly was Cobie Smulders bf/Blauman! It’s so funny to picture her with his freaky self in Scrubs! Haha.

  70.  Toby | January 24, 2010 @ 9:31 pm

Wow, I have been reading the posts via email on my blackberry all weekend and haven’t been near a computer to respond to anything until now.

Jenn- yes CS’s BF is Jimmy the over touchy orderly. I didn’t realize that he was Blauman, but I love how at one point all of their significant others have been on the show. Thanks for posting the article (which yes, Katie I had read, actually a while ago). I am glad that the cast feels the same way about Barney and Robin as we do.

Katie, I am glad you will continue to post :) .

  71.  Purple Giraffe | January 25, 2010 @ 12:30 am

I know that a lot of people that read this blog are European, so I feel that it is my duty as an American to inform you all that right about now, Marshall and his friends at the Minnesota bar would be crying into their beers again, because the Vikings just lost the NFC Championship :) :)

  72.  High Hoper | January 25, 2010 @ 6:26 am

    I read it now…

Maybe they use it as a joke this year lol

  73.  Toby | January 25, 2010 @ 12:32 pm

As did the Jets :( . That could be an interesting dynamic on the show, jets versus Vikings.

  74.  Picelli | January 26, 2010 @ 1:53 pm

You’re kidding you didnt recognize that was Peet! Come on! We’re talking about Amanda Peet! :P

  75.  SophiaVonMatterhorn | January 26, 2010 @ 4:54 pm

How I Met Your Mother just got renewed for a sixth season

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  76.  Derek | January 26, 2010 @ 6:16 pm

    Hi JD.

You are really lucky to have a huge crowd talking on your blog. But sometimes it’s hard to track the conversations between comments. Can you install Disqus to your website to have a better view of the comments? I am just saying.

I am in no way part of the Disqus project. I just thought it’s the best commenting system you can use here, since there are people who says that they love the show, and some think otherwise. Just something for you to consider, JD. :D

  77.  Bulut | January 27, 2010 @ 9:13 am

can someone tell me why we don’t have 14th episode ?

  78.  Purple Giraffe | January 30, 2010 @ 7:47 pm

@Toby I agree that a Jets/Vikings Super Bowl would be a good storyline for the show, but as a Packers fan, there is really no situation where I would actually want the Vikings in the Super Bowl, especially when they have Old Man Favre playing for them. But I do think that the Jets and Vike play each other during the regular season next year, which I would like to see on the show.
