Season 5, Episode 15: Rabbit or Duck Discussion
This season so far has been full of rabbits and ducks. There were times tonight when I wasn’t sure which one this episode would turn out to be. Overall, if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…
What Was Good
The Rabbit/Duck fight is in my top five HIMYM scenes of all time. It looked like the actors had a great time screaming at each other. I’ve had these kind of amplified rants and they’re fantastic. I watched the argument at least three times. Ranjit screaming in another language? Fantastic.
Barney was hilarious. His plot line would’ve been stupid if any other actor did it. He has such a great comic timing and expression, and he’s already played the character up into mythic qualities, that it really worked. I like too that it was sort of a wink to Jason Segel giving out his email. Watching Barney go insane with choice was a lot funnier than reading The Tell-Tale Heart and had way more cleavage. It’s fantastic that he gets sexual ADD when presented with so many women.
I liked Robin in this episode. Her slow realization that her hatred for Don might actually be interest was a nice moment. I hope with this week and last week we’re getting back to a better plotline for her. I even like the Don guy. He’s sort of bumbling and dumb but that might work for her.
Speaking of Robin, the callback to The Naked Man was fantastic. I’m sure they were insinuating that Don heard about it on Barney’s blog but I’m going to think they were giving a little shout-out to yours truly. Let me keep my dreams!
This might have been the funniest Ted we’ve seen. Radnor was downright goofy in the episode and I liked it. It goes to show that Radnor takes the role seriously and has let it evolve from naive romantic to bitter lonesomeness to a sort of humor about life.
I really liked that the arranged marriage didn’t result in some meet-cute between Ted and an amazing girl. The show used to be much more precious in this way and while some people might complain it’s changed too much, I like the reality in how it played out. Marshall and Lily forgot, the girl they finally found sucked, Ted wasn’t really interested, the girl was dumb. This is how things really go. Even the moment with Ted and Robin on the couch felt real. It also felt like there was a little chemistry between them again. I’m glad they had the final bit with Robin and Don to shut down any suspicion that Robin and Ted would get back together.
What Was Bad
I was a little worried in the beginning of the episode. It felt like it was moving kind of fast and Ted’s pronouncement of wanting an arranged marriage felt hokey to me.
While they didn’t have much to do, Marshall and Lily felt like a real married couple again, not the weird extremes they’ve hit at other points this season.
Favorite Moments
- I love the ringtone on Barney’s super phone
- Good to see Ranjit back, that dude’s awesome
- “I’ll be sleeping with hundreds of women. And I don’t want to take the subway because, you know, germs.”
- “That’s what I call having a woof over your head” I love the bad news puns.
- Ted would explain why Ulee’s Gold is always in a crossword
- Teddy Westside. Awesome nickname.
- Why has Ted never run upstairs to get books before? That’s totally the kind of thing he’d do. That dude’s a nerd.
- Don. Donald. Donald Duck. And what does Donald Duck never wear? PANTS!
- Robin’s Valentine’s dress was hot
- Trudy is married? Crazy!
- “Oh, duck”
Closing
I’ve really enjoyed all the joking around Marshall and Ted do regarding how Robin is going to hook up with Don. All the “you’re going to marry him so hard. in the butt” feel improvised and are really funny. I like them too because it shows the gang really wants Robin to be happy. That’s something about Lily especially I always liked and kept her character grounded. She might be maniacal and devious, but she has everyone’s best interest at heart. It’s good to see that maybe Don is shaping up, putting in a little effort on Robin’s behalf. Maybe that demonstration will prove to her that she’s worth more than desperation and bad dates. Maybe Don’s effort will be the best thing for her.

OH MY GOD
I’m gonna say it. Best episode this season so far! Perfect episode!! It has all!
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I found it perfect. I liked all about it!
Can’t wait for your review, JD
BGeo | February 8, 2010 @ 10:47 pm
Pretty good episode. Not my favourite of the season, but that being said I have no complaints about the episode. It was funny and heart felt
Andy | February 8, 2010 @ 11:03 pm
I thought I’d be in the minority, but I freaking loved this episode. The rabbit/duck fight was amazing. Ted and Robin were cute. The Naked Man callback got my biggest laugh this year. Ted was funny, Barney was funny, Marshall and Lily were funny. This was just a top to bottom phenomenal episode, maybe my favorite since Season 3.
sydb | February 8, 2010 @ 11:20 pm
great episode! maybe the best of the season yes.
finally himym! i was beginning to lose my faith in you.
Purple Giraffe | February 8, 2010 @ 11:36 pm
This episode was phenomenal! I love how they tied it in with the Super Bowl! The rabbit and duck fight was hilarious. And I love that Don did the naked man!! I love those kinds of callbacks. Oh, and also Marshall and Lily mentioning Trudy, Natalie, and Blah Blah. and Ted and Robin were really cute in this episode. This was probably my favorite of the season.
jen209 | February 9, 2010 @ 1:08 am
The metaphors on this show just keep getting better and better. The duck and the rabbit thing is SO TRUE and I would bet money that I will find a way to apply it to my life in the next month.
Colin | February 9, 2010 @ 2:21 am
I loved that Don did the naked man. I kept telling myself “Don, you’re doing it wrong! You wait until AFTER the date!”
I also loved the SuperBowl connection. Everytime I saw the commercial Sunday night, I figured it was just a CBS ad. It was brilliant of the producers to tie it into the plot. And it was great, old fashion Barney. He was pulling a start that is not unexpected of him, but it wasn’t pushed into the forefront of the episode.
And everytime I feared Marshall would say how much he loved Lily (again), I was releaved to hear him instead remind Robin that she’d probably marry Don.
The only thing that had me disappointed was that Ted skipped out on his date, only to go after some random girl he found via Barney’s phone. I thought we were going to be led to another potential wife who would stick around for a few episodes.
And in that second to last scene with Ted and Barney, I again thought they were going to hook up again. The producers keep teasing us.
Sara | February 9, 2010 @ 2:22 am
Perfect episode! The rabbit/duck fight was hilarious and all the callbacks were fantastic. I especially enjoyed the “lawyered” callback. Haven’t heard that one in a long time!
Slionati | February 9, 2010 @ 5:10 am
@Colin:
“And in that second to last scene with Ted and Barney, I again thought they were going to hook up again. The producers keep teasing us.”
Don’t you mean Ted and Robin? LOL. Ted and Barney hooking up would definitely be awesome, though.
Anyway, I enjoyed this ep a lot and loved all the callbacks. It was great how Ranjit was there, too.
Colin | February 9, 2010 @ 5:34 am
Ak, Silonati, thanks for catching my error. Yes, I meant Ted and Robin. And while typing it, perhaps I was thinking about Robin and Barney, and my wires got crossed.

High Hoper | February 9, 2010 @ 6:44 am
yoric, that was really uncalled for.
Rainy | February 9, 2010 @ 7:04 am
OMG! This episodes put everything I love in the show in to one, & I really love it. It’s a big LOL, it have some stories of the past episodes, & it’s cute. I never like Don, until this episode! I kind of hoping he & Robin will get together soon, just can’t wait!!!
ps. love the naked man re-used!!!!!
Kirk | February 9, 2010 @ 7:50 am
Loved the episode
I always get so intrigued when they tease Ted and Robin, it reminds me of how much I loved them together…
anyways, great episode, it seems that they always turn it on after the holidays…
JeremyHXS | February 9, 2010 @ 8:22 am
Is it just me but with the old callbacks recently, you just had a suspicion that Victoria was coming back?
SundaeQueen | February 9, 2010 @ 8:45 am
@ JeremyHXS:
I thought Victoria might come back when Marshall and Lily were going through the list of Ted’s ex’s!
ev. mosby | February 9, 2010 @ 9:11 am
Omg I totally thought Victoria was coming back too! I thought everything tied in well perfectly. The rabbit-duck fight was sooo funny and to be honest I was on Marshall’s side. Rabbits are way better! Plus how freaking hilarious was the connection between Don and Donald Duck and not wearing pants? ROFL.
Poppy Fields | February 9, 2010 @ 10:15 am
So what was the ringing tone on Barney’s phone?
Fan | February 9, 2010 @ 10:19 am
I need Barney’s ringtone! PLEASE can someone help me?
Matt | February 9, 2010 @ 11:10 am
if i’m not mistaken barneys ring tone was “do your ears hang low?”
Fan | February 9, 2010 @ 11:59 am
Isn’t it “turkey in the straw”? I just can’t find a proper mp3
Toby | February 9, 2010 @ 12:13 pm
I loved this episode; the whole Rabbit and Duck thing was hilarious, and I loved how Don said he read the Naked Man on “some guy’s blog” The connection to the Superbowl was great, and i’m kind of sad they switched the number on the sign. Ted getting hooked on the phone was also great. It is really true with a lot of people, both girls and guys, that it is hard to settle for one person because they are always wondering what is better out there.
I really don’t like the Don storyline, unless it is a tie in to the Barney and Robin relationship. Otherwise, I think the whole thing is just ridiculous.
JD | February 9, 2010 @ 12:27 pm
I’m back baby dolls, and with the old format. Recognize!
JD | February 9, 2010 @ 12:31 pm
Also, alas poor Yoric, we’ll never know him well since his comment was deleted.
Ana | February 9, 2010 @ 12:48 pm
I also think that this episode was awesome! Really good HIMYM style, and the jokes – hilarious.
“I’ll be sleeping with hundreds of women. And I don’t want to take the subway because, you know, germs.” LOL
High Hoper | February 9, 2010 @ 1:02 pm
Great review JD!
I rewatched it twice today. Best this season (for me) so far. Incredibly awesome!
I feel that we’ll have some Victoria stuff before the end of the season.
Kayla | February 9, 2010 @ 1:06 pm
I loved that “Blah Blah” is now committed at Belview. And ted’s Here Comes The Groom song.
NCUK | February 9, 2010 @ 1:19 pm
Great review, as always.
I really liked that Bays managed to get “ulee” into the script as he mentioned on twitter. And that naked man is back, the valentines heart was funny.
would have been amazing if they could have actually got the camera on him at the superbowl… maybe next year.
This website seems to have the exact one… (second one down) http://www.laurasmidiheaven.com/00search/Turkey_in_the_Straw.html
carlota | February 9, 2010 @ 1:28 pm
I really though it would be Victoria! The baking stuff… That blond girl was ugly, man! And Robin, she’s totally gonna marry Don!!!
High Hoper | February 9, 2010 @ 1:51 pm
Also, Natalie was married one year after being with Ted for the last time.
Jazzer | February 9, 2010 @ 2:24 pm
Woah, nelly! What reception… Amazing. I forgot about the episode, but after seeing all the comments, and even High Hopper is amazed, then it must be good. DLing, right now.
Natalie | February 9, 2010 @ 2:38 pm
lol…I was thinking the exact same thing when you posted that Duck/Rabbit fight :p
Awesome episode! Would you have picked duck or rabbit?
Randi | February 9, 2010 @ 2:58 pm
Hmm..am I the only one that didn’t “love” this episode. I thought it was cute and really enjoyed the Naked Man callback, but I thought the whole Barney “Super Phone” was silly and it started to get on my nerves. (But I admit..i did keep calling that number during the Super Bowl til I got through..hehe).
Keith | February 9, 2010 @ 3:14 pm
Wow! I’m surprised so many folks liked this one. I thought it was one of the worst episodes of the season.
The only thing I liked was the Naked Man callback. That’s it.
Teddy Westside | February 9, 2010 @ 3:22 pm
Loving the switch back to the old format! The past few weren’t bad per se, the stream of consciousness style worked and was interesting I guess. But this way is much more critical and gives the readers more of your insight into the strengths, weaknesses and fun trivia. And those are the main reasons that your reviews rock!
Also, anyone else here agree with Marshall that rabbits are better than ducks? Maybe its just me.
Jazzer | February 9, 2010 @ 3:41 pm
Is it just me, or is this episode like, the most awesome of all awesome things ever! I can’t describe this…
NPH was, phenomenal, at his best, especially at the parts where he runs from girl to girl. And Ranjit was amazing! xD Especially when he speaks on, Palestinian? [sounds like the langauge in You Don't Mess With The Zohan]
Every character was used the way they should be. The Rabbit-Duck discussion was one of the greatest parts of the whole series, didn’t laugh as much, but I know how to recognize amazing work when I see it. The episode was hilarious, the, well, hard to say the best in the season, but it sure is neck in neck with the first and second seasons.
Jason Segel’s yelling was strangly realistic, made the fight even better then it is. And the amount of “old-school” this being incorporated: BlaBla, The Naked Man, [I wow-ed like crazy when I saw they made it back in the show xD], “Some Guy’s Blog”, and even the old restaraunt where Barney, Ted, Lily and Ted’s sister went out in, this is a longshot, Season 4, episode 11 or 15, where Barney sing’s the awesome jingle bell songs.
Anywho, amazing episode. Can’t wait for more. Also, good to see the old review system back, had nothing against the old one, but just, good to see. =] Keep it up.
Also, what’s the phone Barney is using? I always notice the tech stuff. He had a BlackBerry Bold, an iPhone for the biggest part of the series, he and Ted had a touch-screen phone possibly from Samsung, or even from LG, and now this phone. Could be the T-Mobile Dash 3G.
SophiaVonMatterhorn | February 9, 2010 @ 4:07 pm
hey jd, ty for deleting that gross comment, high hoper ftw
)
and love this format, the one you tried out…i couldve lived with it but this one is so much better, i was just missing the screenshots
vahid | February 9, 2010 @ 4:12 pm
Great episode,
during the fight Ranjit says
“A duck can swim”
“A duck can walk”
“A duck can fly”
“this is frustrating, what in the hell do you want?”
(he speaks faris (persian))
SophiaVonMatterhorn | February 9, 2010 @ 4:12 pm
@teddy westside:
)
i totally think rabbits are better, you can cuddle them and eat them afterwards
and i say this, having 2 ducks tattooed on my chest
)))))))))
@jazzer:
ranjit probably spoke bengali, considering hes from bangladesh
aaron | be awesome instead | February 9, 2010 @ 4:41 pm
it was such a great episode. One of my favorites of the series.
Ranjit really made the episode I felt. Especially his speaking in Farsi during the argument.
I did feel like Marshall had the best parts of the argument though…I mean who carries around a duck foot for good luck?
Jazzer | February 9, 2010 @ 4:56 pm
Haha, so it’s Farsi. Well, it could’ve been a wee bit funnier if they hid some text in the the sentences Ranjit said in Farsi, like a hidden message. =]
bagga | February 9, 2010 @ 5:34 pm
totally awesome episode…
Solna | February 9, 2010 @ 5:42 pm
Long time reader, first time writing bla bla bla…
Haven’t seen the episode yet…
But I’m writing mainly to say that I liked the old format of recaps much more. I totally miss the What was good, What was bad and Favorite moments, I usually laught when I was reading it and remembering the episode and this format just doesn’t do it for me. Also it reveals me several jokes I didn’t catch since I’m not American.
This leads me to the second thing. Haven’t you thought about some poll where are all your readers from? I remember discussion under The Playbook preview where lot of people write where they are from and I was really surprised. I’m from Czech republic btw.
vahid | February 9, 2010 @ 6:09 pm
SophiaVonMatterhorn, Ranjit sounds bangladesh, but he spoke farsi, check out his profile on IMDB, he is persia, and i am too,

Nonblonde | February 9, 2010 @ 6:32 pm
HOLY CRAP this episode was so good I don’t have one single complaint! Loved it, it had it all – the call backs, the hilarity, the classic HIMYM metaphors, Ranjeet… How funny wasn’t he when we saw him knitting in the limo? Aaah Ranjeet, you awesome bastard!
And I love how they’ve actually managed to make me curious about Don, even though I found he was a huge douché on “last cigarette ever”… Gaaah. God. I’m overwhelmed! It was perfect, just perfect. And look, the episode has brought us all together again
Elisa | February 9, 2010 @ 6:47 pm
I was really close to giving up on HIMYM before I saw this episode.. I LOVED IT! I really laughed hard and it didn’t happen since ages! Everything just worked perfectly this time
They were all so funny but not in the stupid and meaningless way that made me hate the previous episodes.
Yay, happy me
Starney Binson | February 9, 2010 @ 7:16 pm
If Ranjit is from Bangladesh, why does he speak Arabic?!
Starney Binson | February 9, 2010 @ 7:17 pm
Note, I see the discussion above. I speak Bangla (Bengali) and Ranjit was not speaking it.
NCUK | February 9, 2010 @ 7:27 pm
@Vahid
I didn’t realise that Ranjit (marshall) had been in so much other stuff!! i just love his “hello”
also have you seen this… it was on someones twitter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp7NX2cH_SI
- this girl does a song from Ted’s daughters perspective with lots of call backs, quite funny.
darkspark343 | February 9, 2010 @ 8:21 pm
I have to agree with the minority here in saying that I don’t think it was that great of an episode. It felt like the entire cast and crew behind this episode were on something. It was really funny (Ted asking permission to say lawyered, the naked man) but the extremely fast pace and the animations of the rabbit ears and duck bill were just too much for me.
Brody | February 9, 2010 @ 8:49 pm
@darkspark343
how can the episode be “really funny” and not great?
Chris | February 9, 2010 @ 9:22 pm
Does anyone know the song playing when Ted and Robin are on the couch together at the end? It’s a girl and the only lyrics I can hear are “Someday” and “Dum dum dum dum dum dum” . . .
vahid | February 9, 2010 @ 10:26 pm
@ Starney Binson
Persian/farsi is not arabic, these two languages are completely different,
I think he makes a wrong accent for the show, it sounds indien.
Randy | February 9, 2010 @ 11:19 pm
I’ve only seen one person mention it so far, but when Ted asked Marshall for permission to say “lawyered”, that was easily the best part of the episode for me. I always thought that was something that was really funny and underappreciated and I love it when he says that. My favorite part of the episode.
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | February 10, 2010 @ 4:25 am
Loved Blah Blah and loved Lawyered.
Regardless of the hundreds of women calling Barney and Ted getting involved, I would say the ONLY unrealistic thing in this episode was…. Lily forgetting to set Ted up with someone! Hello! She would be on that like a bimbo on Barney!
That was a really fun episode. Also it was crazy because I had JUST seen that duck/rabbit picture on an old episode of Fringe the night before. True story.
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | February 10, 2010 @ 4:26 am
Also Don reading about the Naked Man on “some guy’s blog” reminded me of Rachel hearing the magic story you use when you want to hook up from “some guy” named Ken Adams! (on Friends)
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | February 10, 2010 @ 4:33 am
NCUK- that video was great! Thanks!
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | February 10, 2010 @ 4:36 am
Ok, sorry I just posted several in a row, but Toby what do you mean about the number being switched and Randi about calling it during the Superbowl? I didn’t watch the Superbowl- did I miss something?
Rainy | February 10, 2010 @ 4:52 am
THIS episode = perfection! I think we can truly say it’s the best from this season, and I just can’t wait for the next Robin & Don story.
Ana | February 10, 2010 @ 6:04 am
I’m trying to find Barney’s ringtone. Can anyone say the name?
Someone said “turkey in the straw”. I found it here -> http://www.coolfreeringtones.com/free-ringtones/Thanksgiving Theme – Turkey In The Straw.html but it’s not this one.
The other one – “do your ears hang low?” – still looking…
Ana | February 10, 2010 @ 6:11 am
I don’t think it is “do your ears hang low?”… Just heard it”
Fabio | February 10, 2010 @ 6:44 am
man for a moment i thought, when Ted told marshall he wanted to back out of the arranged date, that he was gonna go upstairs to stay with robin, but not in a romantic way…. It is awesome how the writers messed up with my head so i’d think that.
awesome episode, just AWESOME!
Starney Binson | February 10, 2010 @ 11:17 am
@Vahid,
I’m aware that there’s a difference between Farsi and Arabic. Farsi is spoken in Iraq, Iran, etc.
However, they have mentioned on the show that Ranjit (or Ranjeet) is from Bangladesh. Bengali is the language spoken in Bangladesh (according to Wikipedia, 98% of people from Bangladesh speak it). I’m not too certain why Ranjit spoke Farsi here (and, yes, I understand that the actor is from Iran, but the character is not)
Thomas | February 10, 2010 @ 12:36 pm
They are certainly putting together a good run of episodes right now. Teddy Westside! Love that nickname!
Matt | February 10, 2010 @ 2:46 pm
I don’t know if anyone here has any interest besides me but i was almost sure that barney’s ringtone was “do your ears hang low?”. Being that several people here thought it was “turkey in the straw” i decided to look it up. turns out do your ears hang low took the melody from turkey in the straw so they are in fact one in the same. just fyi.

Thank You JD. Great post and agree with most. This was an awesome episode.
I do know that Jason Segal gave out a phone number and “To Call If your disease free”. No email.
I loved CGI of the Endzones for the Super Bowl and also how they were talking about the game at the Bar. Reminds me of the Simpsons Episode where they do the Super Bowl Trip and they cover their mouths with beer and then later did a voice over to say the two teams. Wonder if it was a call back to that?
Finally, I read somewhere that they thought producers were teasing us with Barney and Ted hooking up but they meant Ted and Robin.
Well for those of you who would want to see Barney and Ted Hook up, Family Guy took care of this for us and Neil and Josh gave their voices.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVW-FkdPNLs&feature=related
Brody | February 11, 2010 @ 1:18 pm
@Trevormac98 when you called the number Jason gave out, it went to a message that had his email.
Trevormac98 | February 11, 2010 @ 1:50 pm
Brody- Thanks, I forgot about that as I did not call the number but did read that and then you emailed it and got some funny reply back. Just like when you call the number Barney gave.
dinalyn | February 11, 2010 @ 11:13 pm
just because the actor speaks farsi doesn’t mean they should try to pass it as bangla (that is the name of the language of bangladesh)
it’s just ignorant. i’m sure many people that speak french would be in an uproar if someone who was supposed to be french just started speaking spanish or something because they think no one will know the difference.
(i know they did it on friends, but that was different, everyone knew joey was just stupid with his version of french)
Alex | February 12, 2010 @ 2:24 am
I love the subtle plug by CBS XD Anyone else notice it?
Has anyone tried calling the number Barney showed?
Luis Cotovio | February 12, 2010 @ 7:52 am
Great episode. Barney’s ADD was hilarious. It seems that now that season 5 is heading for the end stretch the script is getting better. Wonder if the mother will be hinted at or revealed in the next few episodes?! We’ve had some good hints at her, we even know where and with whom she lives. But with season 6 already guaranteed i doubt a full reveal is coming soon.
On a side note, i just watched “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs”. Wacky and FUNNY movie. I mention this because NPH voices the funniest character in it, Steve, the monkey. I didn’t know it was him ’till the credits rolled but it made me ROFL. And does anyone know what Carter Bays has to do with the movie? His name is in the “Special Thanks To” list in the credits.
Luis Cotovio | February 12, 2010 @ 7:54 am
@Alex.
Yeah, that CBS plug jumped right at me. I couldn’t believe they had the balls to do it. ROFL.
katie90 | February 13, 2010 @ 5:10 am
weeeell reading your comments, i got weak. watched it. loved it. awesome episode
still on a himym break on principle though (haven’t wathed the two previous ones) but reading about the rabbit and duck fight i just had to know what that was all about. the fight was hilarious and so was teddy westside!! liked the robin/ted and robin/don dynamic as well as the naked man and lily’s reveation of where some f ted’s exes ended up. thought the whole barney story dragged a little, though. you didn’t need to see it ooover and oooover again. but, again, oved the rest of the episode and it finally felt himym again (which, for me, only double date and the playbook had achieved so far).

PLUS: rabbits are wayyyy mre awesome than ducks could ever be!! i’m with marshall on that one!
btw, how awesome was ted asking for marshall’s permission to say “lawyered”?! great stuff. also i love when they’re teasing robin about don (loved t before in the ep where she met him), to me that’s just what friends do and it also shows just how great friends robin and ted have become since their break-up. i liked that a lot (as well as their scene on the sofa)

Awesome awesome, loved all the callbacks and the fight and the blazer and Don an everything. Loved how Call Barney Stinson became CBS, they get a lot out of that name – “but all of that was BS – Before Stinson”.
Ah HIMYM is the best.

After reading most of your reviews regarding this week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother I can’t seem to understand the fascination behind this episode. I thought it was bland, predictable and boring. The lack of growth each character exhibited throughout this episode almost made me want to change channels. The one dimensional aspects of Barney and Robin bring in the laughs but it’s the three dimentional qualities exhibited by the rest of the cast that cause me to tune in week after week. The boring site gags coupled with the colourless storylines made this week’s episode of HIMYM a must-miss. It pains me to say that perhaps the sun is setting on this series and not a moment too soon. Unless the creators are able to channel the magic of the first and second seasons into season 5 and 6 I think its time we see who the mother is and wrap up this show before it becomes a lame duck

I just noticed the funniest part of the episode. Robin snaps on a glove and says “ted this may hurt a little”.

@Jack Package So, are you saying that the characters need to grow as people in every episode? Because that just seems silly.
Brody | February 18, 2010 @ 3:17 am
if seasons one and two were so “magical” how come there was no character growth in Monday Night Football?

See, I thought this episode was hilarious, much better than many other episodes this season. But even being laugh-out-loud funny in many places this week, I still feel like this season is missing an overall plot arc. And no, substituting Don for Barney in Robin’s life so doesn’t count. Although I do wonder if Barney will wind up being jealous of Don or what. It seems highly unlikely that Don will be a permanent cast member, so I’m not sure where they’re going with that plot exactly.
But yes, it was still a hilarious episode. And that Super Bowl tie-in was brilliant. According to the message I got when I called during the game, my date is in October of 2016. Count it.

I would think viewers would want the characters on the television show they watch to grow as people as the show progressed through each season. Without proper character development there is no point in tuning in week after week. It becomes repetitive and predictable. If from the pilot episode to the series finale we were subject to the same actions of each character without any growth then what was the point in watching. The viewer has become complacent and will settle for what is being shown. It is the one dimensional characters like Barney and Robin that are bringing in the (cheap) laughs, but it is the three dimensional characters like Ted and Marshal that are able to develop the series into a watchable piece of television.

@ Jack Package
I agree that characters should show growth throughout a series, but before you made the comment that you didn’t like this episode because the characters didn’t show growth throughout it. I am simply saying that I don’t think it is realistic for the characters to grow as people in EVERY episode. I know that I don’t grow as a person every week, so I don’t expect t.v. characters to either. I’m not trying to be a bitch or anything, I’m just think that it is unrealistic to expect the characters to exhibit growth in each episode.

You are entitled to your opinion. I however believe that though it is impossible to understand the complexities of each character within a single episode or spread out over an entire season that should not allow television writers to negate over all character development. Even though a small revealing detail said in passing may not change a character’s overall appearance, such a detail will go along way in developing that character for episodes to come. For example it is episodes like “Game Night” that allow the viewer a window into the origins of a particular character (in this case Barney). It is through this window that one is able to understand the behaviors of a character and begin to seem them in a different light. Though time constraints limit character development it is important for the viewer to notice a change between this week’s character and last week’s. Though this is sometimes not possible I would hope that the writers are able to balance the comedic element of HIMYM with proper character growth in order to ensure not only a funnier episode but a more pensive one as well.

Great Episode!
But as Jazzer point out, what’s the phone Barney use? I’m kinda curious too!
