OMG … its a pity what this show has turned into …

I mean common guys, I get it that its seasons ending … but.. u just cant go on making craps like this ..

  2. I want to cry |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:12 am GMT -4

    Agreed, John.

This episode beats out last week’s as Worst Episode Ever.

This show is going down the toilet. (And I used to be one of its biggest fans!)

  3. Brody |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:38 am GMT -4

apparently the people who’ve posted so far don’t realize they’ve always hated HIMYM, as tonights episode was everything it should have been.

  4. Brody |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:53 am GMT -4

In fact, I’m so sick of seeing people week after week finding faults in this show. No show is perfect! Please explain to me what it is you want from this show so you can just be content with it and not calling each new episode the new low. I laugh every night it’s on, no matter what the plot is. Maybe it’s because I change with the show, because I realize that a show can’t stay the same through out it’s run.

I am so frustrated with you guys :(

  5. Hans Christian |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 01:09 am GMT -4

Yes, last week was not good, but this one was good and funny in my opinion. People have been going on and on about having more about Ted and now you got it. I liked it and I can’t way to watch the whole season back to back.

  6. rox |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 01:32 am GMT -4

Yeah, i liked it much better than the last 2 episodes. There were no clues, but it was cool to see how Ted got his house, and I liked the “Drunk or Kid” joke. Coming up next month there will most likely be some great episodes about the movie Stella’s husband makes about his life…so maybe they’re giving us some sub par episodes to lead up to some amazing ones. I’m definitely not giving up on the show.

  7. Spencer |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 03:14 am GMT -4

Yeah, there’s still Marissa Heller, Dopplegangers, and the Wedding Bride, and one other.

I enjoyed this episode leagues better than last weeks. The whole time they were inside the house I kept thinking “Do a morph into Future Ted’s house!” And sure enough!

  8. Colin |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 03:42 am GMT -4

This episode was great. And you know why? it’s because it progressed the actual plot. We now learned how Ted acquired his current home. There was a purpose to this episode!

And Spencer, remind me about Marissa Heller. Who is she?

  9. jons |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 04:48 am GMT -4

It was a better episode than the last 2 for sure, they are buidlding the end of this season…from the moment they got in that house i knew he would say ..”and kids that house is this house”…good episode

  10. intangible |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:04 am GMT -4

I thought the episode was good!

I love the, “kids, they were no guitar” and how when either Robin or Barney were crying to Clint’s song, they both stop to sing, “…and the dragoooon”

Also, do I watch a lot of HIMYM or what? Cause I can still recall in the episode where Ted’s parents first came to visit and Barney asked her about her brooch. Something like, “..there’s a story behind that brooch and I need to know it”. This episode where Barney was in the car with Ted’s mom, she was just finishing the story on how she got that brooch!!!

    Barney’s p****s is enormous btw.

  11. Pete G. |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:19 am GMT -4

    Guys,

I don’t want to bring too much guessing and stuff into that episode but didn’t Ted actually mention he was dancing with his future wife on that wedding? Maybe I missunderstood it on 1:30 or later but if that’s true somehow she should have been on that scene, if not, it’d be some authors’ cheap move…

I didn’t spend too much time on that, it was a good episode (though not awesome), but I remembered to see a brunette hippie-styled woman dancing in the back of the wedding place, she wasn’t that ugly I guess, so what do you think?

  12. Buxton |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:55 am GMT -4

This was exactly what the last few episodes shouldve been or Season five for that matter. I saw glimpses of the awesomeness of seasons 1-3.

  13. Fabio |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:57 am GMT -4

man i thought this episode was awesome! really!! loved it

  14. PaKo89 |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 06:45 am GMT -4

Man, if you like the premise of this show, than this was an great episode.
I loved it. I always like it when they give us Future Ted stuff.
It defiantly wasnt the funniest ep. but had some great jokes, like the painting, kid or drunk game.
That inspector guy was even more funny than Barney!!
@Pete G He didnt say that he was dancing with his future wife but that it could’ve been a possibility(possimpable).

I’m hoping that JD will post his recap this week.

  16. Thomas |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:53 am GMT -4

Last week was a bit of a miss but this episode was another cracker in an excellent second half of this season. We took a major step forward with Ted and they did it brilliantly. It had those themes of destiny and fate that they have maintained so poignantly throughout the show’s run, and I loved that a big part of it was Marshall supporting his best friend. That reminded me a lot of ‘Come On’ from season one and the episodes that followed. That moment where Ted finds Marshall on the front step having been left by Lily and the support he gives him as he struggled to get over her. It is those relationships that are at the heart of the show and it was truly on display here.

‘Home Wreckers’ also brough the funny. “Drunk or kid”, the awesome inspector (especially in the college bit), Ted’s extreme awkwardness with Clint, the nod back to Barney’s brief liaision with Ted’s mum and just the general banter. I’m really looking forward to these last few episodes!

  17. Kathleen |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 09:59 am GMT -4

I thought Barney couldn’t drive? Wasn’t there an episode where he tried to learn to drive and he couldn’t do it without going really slow?

  18. bro |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 10:30 am GMT -4

    Did he just say Hobo?

  19. Kooper |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 10:40 am GMT -4

The show has progressed and yes we now have the house in which Ted is telling his kids “The Story” that is good. I still feel like the show is treading water.

This show needs an end next season. Like Lost they should declare and ending and build to it. Otherwise it will be another season of one off episodes and near misses with the mother. The near misses have gotten to be too much and fairly predictable.

  20. mikey215 |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:13 am GMT -4

I like the friendships they have on the show, but ted has had no real realtionship in this season. i swear to allah, if the give me a montage on meeting the mother on the last show I’m going to kill somone

  21. NCUK |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:18 am GMT -4

I really enjoyed this episode. I liked how they showed us the ted that doesn’t give up, who desperately wants to be married and have his perfect life that he buys a house to make it happen (and doesn’t give up the wreck)! loved the whole bromance between marshall and ted being shown more. I love barney but it is better when he is not the dominant one i think cos then he can just be funny but the story actually goes somewhere.
oh, where is don!!?? we haven’t seen him for like 4 episodes now!!
Great episode, though i agree with people that it isn’t the funniest but it was sweet.

Does anyone know what the two songs were at the end of the episode? (the one when they were sledge hammering and the one when the house changed into the future house) ..?
Hope JD comments this week too..

  22. Sara |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:19 am GMT -4

This was one of my favorite episodes in a while. I like how it was grounded in Ted’s main plotline of reaching his goals of a family and house. I related to Ted because, as someone who is the same age and also single, I have been thinking about going ahead and buying a house on my own instead of waiting until I’m married – whenever that will happen. I also didn’t think it was crazy that he bought a beater house – he’s an architect, and thought it was appropriate that he got a fixer-upper. I hope future episodes show him actually working on the house.

I also liked the silly jokes and subplots sprinkled throughout, like the “drunk or kid” game, Barney slipping in references to his penis throughout his stories, and of course the flashback scene from their college days which I always love.

  23. Sara |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:22 am GMT -4

@Kooper – I agree about ending the show, though I love it so much. This show was meant to have a climatic, highly-anticipated ending (meeting the mother), and they should just go ahead and end it on their own terms instead of dragging it out just because ratings are good.

  24. Purple Giraffe |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:33 am GMT -4

Ok, I have never quite understood the amount of hate that season 5 has received. I feel like a lot of people have been too harsh on it overall. That’s not to say that it hasn’t had bad moments, but I think people are overreacting most of the time. However, I will agree that last week’s episode (Zoo or False) was one of the worst of the series. There were a few moments where I may have chuckled but overall I thought it was really bad.

That being said, I don’t under stand how anyone could hate this week’s episode. It was really good. It had crazy passionate Ted, it moved the story forward (at least a little bit), and it had some great callbacks and flashbacks. I especially loved the Drunk or Kid game. This was one of the best episodes this season.

  25. teo |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:24 pm GMT -4

Loved it :) I can also not understand how can someone hate it, especially after the last episode…

It was really good, the Drunk or Kid game reminded me of how cool the show was and obviously still can be.
That’s the Ted we want and we love, it was a great story for him, it’s great how he’s hot giving up.
Barney and Robin switching about who cried was really funny :D

They should really show us the mother someday soon, I’ll be glad if after the show they make a spin off or so about how did they get into getting married and having kids…

  26. Fabio |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 12:36 pm GMT -4

    @Thomas

can i make your words mine?

    superb episode!!!

  27. Danielle |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 01:05 pm GMT -4

    Love loved this episode.

I knew just knew it was the house he was talking to his kids in but even when he said it I teared up. I am a big sap!!

    HIMYM for the win.

While some episodes are not great they can basically do not wrong with me. I love this show no matter what. They could have them all standing there talking about the weather and I would watch.

  28. Frankqb |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 01:08 pm GMT -4

I actually thought last week’s episode was a slight return to form for what’s been a bit of a hit and miss season. Though I think I was just relieved to learn it wasn’t a predictable sitcom plot about gun-control. We definitely needed to learn that Future Ted wasn’t being 100% truthful in telling this story to his kids — even if we already suspected it.

As for this week, while the Barney side-plot was a bit silly, I was very much relieved to see the show get back to the story of Ted’s journey because that’s the important thing for me in the show. We have to know that Ted is growing. Despite all the people out there that dislike Ted’s character, his search for Mrs. Right is still what made the show great in those legendary first 3 seasons (contrasted with the Barney’s search for Ms. Right Now). Bravo for a good episode.

And yeah, Drunk vs. Kid is a great game. In fact, it would make a good drinking game.

  29. Dandolion |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 02:30 pm GMT -4

@NCUK the sledge hammer scene used the song “Our House” By Crosby Stills and Nash

  30. BGeo |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 02:38 pm GMT -4

I loved this episode, and I am surprised by the first two posts here.

I thought that we (finally) took a step in moving the story along, and I hope that we continue to see Ted invest his time/money into his new house.

I thought there was some pretty funny moments as well throughout the episode.

The only “flaw” I have, isn’t just with this episode, but with all the marshall flash backs. They fully deck Lily out, but theres Marshall with a different shirt on. Maybe its just Jason’s hair thats getting to me…

  31. BGeo |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 02:39 pm GMT -4

… oh and great call back to the broach that ted’s mom is wearing from “brunch”

  32. LukeDK |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 03:05 pm GMT -4

    I thought this episode sucked
It wasnt funny at all, I didnt laugh once..
sad to see my favorite show going downhill :(

  34. katie90 |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:19 pm GMT -4

ok, umm, i’m halfway through and barney is annoying the hell out of me with the “robin cried” thing. don’t they reminder they did the whole thing back when barney laughed so hard at marshall not having any pants on at work?? and even then it wasn’t that funny and got annoying after a couple of minutes.
also, the clint thing is overdone. yeah, we get it, he’s a hippie and they have sex. ok, moving one – no need to make, like, 17 jokes out of it.
ok, i’m sorry, but so far, i’m just annoyed and back to my bitchy ol’, episode-hatin’ self

  35. katie90 |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 05:37 pm GMT -4

total waste of 21 minutes. just boring. and “robin’s getting serious with don”? yeah..would be nice if we saw the guy once in a while to believe that.

but: i loved the hobo thing! and i had to think of “yeah..same clint” all the time (when ted explained that his dad’s former best friend clint was indeed the same clint now dating his mom)

also, i liked that homewrecker meant clint as well as ted, i like when they go for a double meaning ;)

  36. Kaveh |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 06:03 pm GMT -4

Better than last week, but still not up to par with normal HIMYM-standards.

Another week with weak ratings as well.

  37. KnowEyeDeer |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:11 pm GMT -4

Does anyone know the episode where barney says something like “Your mom and i made out” to ted.

  38. Fermat |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:15 pm GMT -4

Hey there folks, long term lurker, first time poster from Austria here.
Though I’m a bit disappointed with season 5 in general and the last episode “Zoo or False” in particular (come on – this wasn’t HIMYM – this was nothing like it!), I really enjoyed this weeks episode, and I felt at home with it.
It really did something for the general development of the story, it focused a bit more on Ted (I know, everybody loves Barney, but let’s face it: Barney is an awesome Wingman, but on his own, in the centre, he’s just a caricature, unable to carry whole episodes aside from those focused entirely on humour) and it concentrated on the relationships in the group: the friendship between Ted and Marshall, the feelings beside the whole “oh we are so cool, let’s male fun of each other’s weaknesses all the time”, etc.

Marshall’s return in the end came from the heart, as did Ted’s desire for settling down, even though there is nothing to suggest he’s found the right girl. After all, it’s Ted’s journey that’s being told here, a fact one could easily forget during the last episodes. I mean, when was the last time we saw Ted at the University, doing his job, or meeting new people (this might have been the reason why the girl in “Say Cheese” felt so out of place)?

As I said – I liked the episode, especially because it included a few looks back, but all in all I would like to see the series moving forward. What I miss most about season 5 is an arc, a cliffhanger, a girl that could be HER – the mother. And I doubt she’ll magically appear during the next episodes.

  39. Zidge Dog |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:17 pm GMT -4

That’s too bad about the ratings. I enjoyed this episode so much more than last week, but I’m still saying we’ve jumped the shark. Don’t get me wrong, the show did get a lot right, but I

I loved how this show used to be very much a continuity-based show – episodes led to each other, characters developed, and the writers and creators kept it together. There’s been the same director for every episode (except the NPH one) and I felt like it was the most cohesive sitcom on TV. I could overlook the laugh track and all the lamer jokes because I trusted the writers had a plan. And they really did for those first three seasons.

Now, they’re floundering, and maybe their heart has gone out of it a little bit. CBS kept pressuring them to make more “done in one” episodes so it could be like its bigger hits, Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory, that seem to revel in the fact their characters do not grow. An episode like tonight’s remind me of the heart that is at the show’s center, but it also reminds me how we didn’t get those filler episodes back in the day.

So for my recap, I’ll do the frustrating parts first -

Doesn’t Ted have a sister that for some reason moved to New York last season? Are we ever going to see her again?

Guys discussing having sex with your mom is overdone. So’s your mom, by the way.

Robin and Barney’s sub-plot was a little forced, but at least they got one. (Give LAME the baby, damnit. They used to be the best couple on TV. I swear to Thicke, if they have trouble conceiving and have to go through all those cliched obstacles to have one, I’m going to defriend Carter Bays. Just saying. No offense to those who have trouble conceiving, but I’ve seen that plotline play out a lot.)

You get the gang in a car on a road trip and nobody spots a dog?

Ted’s dad should have been there, as well as his crazy religious cousin. I know it’s a lot to get that many guest stars together, but we could have made it work!

Grandma was eating sandwiches. I love that code. Why not use it?

    Now what I liked -

I like dragons being what is repeated.

    I like Barney’s enormous penis.

    I love “drunk or kid”.

I love Marshall’s talk with Ted. It reminded me of old Marshall and especially the St. Patrick’s Day episode.

The inspector was great throughout, but the college bit was hilarious. I like how there was a reference back to the hips being unfit for Ericson babies.

I like Ted disappearing for days at a time, especially when he’s everyone’s ride.

I like passionate Ted returning. He does have a drunk kid heart.

I knew the morphing of the house would happen, but I too was moved by how it did.

    I love hobo.

    I love wrecking the house.

    I love lamp.

I love Grandma being baked and Grandpa Clint exhaling. Reminds me of GOB on Arrested Development.

I like there being a mention of Don.

I like how Ted showed his frustration at being where he was five years ago. He mentioned how everyone else was moving on, but I think they’ve all become stuck for a while now. It’s the curse of the longrunning sitcom.

I still love this show, but my wife has just been rewatching Season Three, and she’s agreeing with me now that the show is not the same. I think a set finale date will help the writers get back to advancing these characters we’ve come to know and love. Give LAME their baby, show Robin finding out how to be better ina relationship, keep Barney as Ted’s foil with very little serious plots, and let Ted change a bit in ways we can measure. The house is a good step.

Sorry this is long. I only feel compelled to write for this show.

  40. Zidge Dog |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:19 pm GMT -4

Geez, one more big dislike – where are the closing bumpers? Two weeks in a row I’ve waited for nothing. (Of course, with Zoo or False, I was glad there was no more.)

  41. High Hoper |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:22 pm GMT -4

    Worst episode ever.
    Horrible.
The writers need to be in the bubble of cancelation to write good stories.
I love himym, you know it. But this episode sucked. Totally.

  42. Amber |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 07:34 pm GMT -4

I noticed right when he showed the gang the “patio” that this is the same porch that Lily always imagines. Any one else notice this subtle hint??
While this episode wasn’t the best, it at least moved the plot forward in some aspects. And of course, I have to agree with everyone. Drunk or Kid? has to be a great drinking game.

  43. Purple Giraffe |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 08:02 pm GMT -4

@Zidge Dog 1 to you for slipping an Anchorman reference into your comment.

  44. I want to cry (@ Broday) |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:48 pm GMT -4

Maybe you shouldn’t attack people just because they think a couple episodes sucked. We’re allowed to have opinions. Season 5 has been weak, and lately I haven’t seen an improvement. In fact, I really think it’s gotten worse. “Home Wreckers” was a perfect example of that. The end scene with Marshall was vaguely sweet, but apart from that…

Last night’s episode had an incredibly obvious plot. Who didn’t see the house thing coming? I’m not someone who needs to have every episode be about Ted getting closer to meeting the mother, and I felt as if the writers were trying to throw me a (not very satisfying) bone with the Future House because they felt guilty about not focusing on Ted lately. I just don’t care about Future Ted’s house (so sue me). The episode wasn’t a good standalone, and it didn’t really develop anything either.

Almost nothing involving Clint was even remotely funny– and he was a major part of the episode. HAHA, sex joke! Wow, Clint’s embarrassing! The writers were SUPER clever coming up with that.

Finally, who needs to hear the gang tell Ted fifty different (not very funny) ways that buying a shoddily built house was a mistake? And what on earth was with the slo-mo bashing the building’s walls? It was taken too seriously to be a complete parody, and it reminded me of a worse version of the Leap at the end of the fourth season (which I wasn’t crazy about, but the episode overall was okay). HIMYM used to be occasionally and effectively sentimental. This episode was just cheesy, and lazily written.

So, there’s my rant. Attack me all you want, say I’m a terrible fan, whatever. I’m just being honest. I didn’t get the appeal of “Home Wreckers”.

  45. I want to cry |  Tuesday, April 20th, 2010 11:49 pm GMT -4

Oops, sorry–that should have been “@ Brody”! :)

  46. katie90 |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 01:25 am GMT -4

Amber: actually, i didn’t see that part cause i was leaving the room and not bothering turning off that lame episode and just heard him talk about that porch and i thought ‘they must be showing the porch lily’s always imagined right now’ ;) did they really?

  47. Dandolion |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 02:30 am GMT -4

    @Amber & @Katie90
It is not the same porch. The porch in the porch episode was cedar shake with a simple open railing and had sand dunes in front of it. It also had simplified colonial detail. in other words it was very East Hampton. The porch in home wreckers was cedar shingle (Smoother and smaller) had low walls as railings was bungalow style and was surrounded by woods.

  48. Jenn- GCWOK Approved |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 04:52 am GMT -4

Kathleen- Barney didn’t know how to drive at one point, but he learned in an episode. And didn’t you see the episode later where he got a bunch of speeding tickets to try and talk his way out of them?

About the porch- Much of the set looked like other things, because it was obvious they were redressed. It probably was the same porch, but it wasn’t supposed to be.

To the crier- Brody wasn’t talking to people who “just thought a couple episodes sucked.” He’s talking about people like you who consistently take time each week to write long rants about how much they hated it. It gets old. Maybe this show has lost a little something, but it is still so much better than so many things on TV. My sister visited me today and watched the show. There was something so joyful and free about the way she laughed at it without picking every little detail apart. I’d forgotten what it’s like to not be thinking in the back of your mind about how people online don’t like this or that, or watching for inconsistencies and things to say online. It’s a fun show that is better when you just watch it to have fun and not just to write in about it the next day.

  49. Kathleen |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 09:01 am GMT -4

    @Jenn Thanks! Forgot about that.

  50. Dandolion |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 10:14 am GMT -4

@Jenn-GCWOK look at my comment directly above yours
“it is not the same porch. the porch in the porch episode was cedar shake with a simple open railing and had sand dunes in front of it. it also had simplified colonial detail. in other words it was very east hampton. the porch in home wreckers was cedar shingle (smoother and smaller) had low walls as railings was bungalow style and was surrounded by woods.”

  51. @Jenn |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 10:16 am GMT -4

Just so you know– first rant I’ve ever written. I’ve only really complained about the past two episodes. I’m sick of “people like you” who seem to have developed a weird form of moral superiority because you like the show more than everyone else.

  52. Matt |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 10:58 am GMT -4

There is a difference between coming on here to complain about it and coming on here to endlessly defend it no matter what. It’s different when you watch the show every week, week after week, all season long, just to come on here and complain about it. Its like you are having dinner, say a BLT and gravy fries, and every time you have it you think, “man- this isn’t good.” But sure enough, every monday night for dinner you have a BLT and gravy fries!

Anywho, I liked the episode a lot, I was really happy to see some ted and marshall bro bonding time (without lily). I also liked to see Ted’s frustration in his inability to find the one and what resulted from that frustration. The ability to take that huge leap of faith is one of ted’s best qualities.

Can’t wait for the last few weeks!

@Matt Well said, sir. And you earn extra points for the BLT and gravy fries analogy.

  54. danny |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 12:08 pm GMT -4

not a spectacular episode, but it still himym..

  55. Zidge Dog |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 12:40 pm GMT -4

Personally, I think it’s okay for people to say they dislike an epidoe if they explain what it is they don’t like. (I’ve been guilty of not explaining my disappointment before, so I know my glass house is susceptible to a barrage of stones.) I also think it’s okay for people to say they liked an episode if they explain why. I didn’t care for last week’s at all, but when I read through those who did like it, I was reminded of the little moments that did make me laugh, especially Marshall’s cartoon being on the pizza place coupon. It made me realize it wasn’t all bad. And when I have liked an episode, sometimes a negative comment has reminded me why something done was out of character or something.

IGWITTSI let’s not get too upset about nay-sayers and yay-sayers who pop up each week. We’re all here because we’re fans, and for most of us, it was the first seasons that got us. There are new people popping up in here all the time, and if the comments make them check out those first few seasons for the first time, then this site has a great purpose. If it’s a positive comment or a negative comment, it all stems from a love for the show.

I might be a vocal nay-sayer more often than not lately, but it’s a show I’ll keep watching until it’s gone because I’ve seen the hilarity and heart of the earlier episodes, and I still get glimpses each Monday night. To borrow the analogy, sometimes BLT’s and gravy fries upset my stomach, but they’re still my favorite sandwich and gravy-covered potato product.

  56. Brody |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 01:19 pm GMT -4

If I seem like I’m “attacking” people I apologize. But when people I attack my favorite show, I gotta stand up.

That’s not to say I blindly defend it no matter what. Like I’ve said before, no show is perfect. I just choose to be open minded every monday so I can have the best HIMYM experience possible. I consistently LOL every time it’s on, whether it’s a new episode or from a past season.

Zidge Dog, I totally agree with you. Everyone’s welcome to say what they dislike about an episode. My beef is with the people who watch it, come on here, announce it was the worst episode ever in a single sentence and leave it at that. It’s like…OK? Could you give a little more than that. How could that have been “the worst”? What did it do SO wrong that it made it “the worst”. That’s a a big deal to call an episode the worst of the series.

I watch this show, not because I really care about who the mother is (don’t get me wrong though, I’m stoked to find out), but because the characters and situations they get into are better than any other sitcom out there. And let’s not forget that it is JUST a sitcom. A comedy about situations. One-off episodes should be expected. And they do them so well most of the time.

So please tell us what’s wrong with an episode. Like this week, thought the Barney/Robin crying bit got old fast, and annoying faster, but didn’t tarnish the episode overall. Just don’t be so quick to hate I guess.

    Good Talk ;)

  57. Ryan P. |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 03:31 pm GMT -4

    This episode was absolutely great.

    1. They brought back Clint…who is awesome.

    2. The made fun of Robin crying/not crying.

    3. The Drunk or Kid? game was legendary.

    4. It was a sausage fest…sausage party?

    5. They brought back the old barney made out with Ted’s mom story.

    6. We now found out about Ted’s house.

It advanced plot and was hilarious, very classic HIMYM….

  58. Spiritfall |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 04:12 pm GMT -4

    What’s wrong with everybody
    This was a great episode!
Can’t wait till the new season.
Monday is the first day of a new work week and thanks to HIMYM it’s not that bad getting out of bed on Monday cause I know after work/school I’ll get to see my fav. show

  59. Trevormac98 |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 04:25 pm GMT -4

Kind of curious on how they are going to finish up this season, what is the cliff hanger?

I do like that Robin mentions Don. Was kind of interesting that he hasnt been shown much.

My favorite part was when the inspector critiqued younger Lily, Sure would be nice to have that.

  60. Kooper |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 05:08 pm GMT -4

    Sara
I agree. I really hope that the show ends on its own terms and not like a lot of other shows and it gets cancelled after they have shot the season finale. I would hate it to end the way Quantum Leap ended with a lame voice over.

“Well kids I know yo have been sitting here really patiently but you have soccer practice. I will have to tell you in the car.”

Or worse a tacked on five minutes at the end of an episode that had nothing to do with the 25 minutes that preceded it.

“So I met your mother at a hot dog stand. Your Aunt Lilly was there and so was your uncle Marshal. It was great.”

  61. Jazzer |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 05:27 pm GMT -4

Greeting, good fellows. =] After weeks of inactivity, a new episode released. < As, you guys know. So far only bad comments, but, downloading the episode anyway. Since I have nothing better to do.

Mainly, I think the show is stale curently because nobody expected Season 6, so the writers [always forget the name, Bays & Thomas? No?] moved all the interesting plots to the next season. It must be that, there is just no other explanation. Be patient. I made a plan, since there will be no episodes thise summer [like the ones before it], I will watch [rewatch actually, for the 4th/5th time] every episode of every season. I have no idea why I had the urge to post this, but just to let you know.

Take care, I'll be back in an hour with my own recap.

  62. Zidge Dog |  Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 06:01 pm GMT -4

Just to play my geek card – wasn’t the last episode of Quantum Leap the one where he goes to the diner and chats with God? I haven’t seen it since it aired, but it really made an impression on me.

  63. Lucas (@ Brody, @ Jenn) |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 01:53 am GMT -4

This is my favorite show currently on TV as well (and I’m guessing it’s one of I want to cry’s favorite shows as well, since they’re on the forum and all).

I don’t think people critiquing a particular episode (or two) can be interpreted as mindlessly attacking the show, particularly when they’re saying it wasn’t great compared to earlier episodes (which, by extension, they must have enjoyed). Personally, I thought that the past two episodes weren’t great by the only standard I really use: the jokes fell flat for me.

There were three primary lines of humor in this past episode: Clint is embarrassing, the Robin/Barney crying thing, and the house is crappy. The first had a couple of good moments (primarily the guitar), but largely fell flat (the song, being stoned, the talk about how sexual Ted’s mother is). The second was a complete dud, which even the heroic efforts of Neil Patrick Harris couldn’t save (also, though the Barney/Ted’s mom “Night Moves” moment might have been good in isolation, it was so wildly implausible that Barney was hung up on Ted’s mom that I couldn’t get past it). The third had some good moments, mostly delivered by the inspector, but the sledgehammer montage was just absurd. I also have to agree that the big revelation at the end was both incredibly obvious and rendered completely sappy by “Our House.”

I’m a big fan of the show, and I think Season 5 has had some very good episodes (Definitions, Jenkins, Girls vs. Suits, Hooked), but at no point has it rivaled the great episodes from previous seasons (The Pineapple Incident, The Naked Man, First Time in New York, Come On, Slap Bet, How I Met Everyone Else, World’s Greatest Couple, Swarley… need I say more?). Season 5 has also had multiple episodes that rank among the series’ worst: Duel Citizenship (although I liked the Sparky tape, from minute 2 I was wondering why she couldn’t get dual citizenship), The Rough Patch (despite how glad I was to see Robin and Barney break up, it deserved more than a fat suit and a Canada joke), Last Cigarette Ever, and Rabbit or Duck (although it slightly improved at the end with the Naked Man and Don’s 30 second redemption, the basic premise was ridiculous).

My point is, it’s possible both to be a fan and to see the show’s flaws. I also think that, objectively speaking, Season 5 is the weakest yet and the past two episodes have been particularly mediocre. I also like to think that “I grow along with the show,” but I have not grown out of the expectation of laughing when I watch HIMYM.

I’m still going to watch and expect to enjoy the next episode, but I hope it recovers from its two-week nadir.

  64. Lucas (@ Brody, @ Jenn) |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 02:03 am GMT -4

PS: Forgot to mention Drunk or Kid… it was okay, but the characters were way more enthusiastic about it than I was. And how would they not have heard of Marshall being in a coma for a week? I’m willing to suspend disbelief for HIMYM, but this episode asked way too much of me: the characters’ sudden ignorance of Marshall’s past, Barney’s obsession with Ted’s mom despite his previous rejection of every woman over 30, and the inspector’s falling through the ceiling with no “kids, I might have exaggerated that” caveat.

  65. Jazzer |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 06:24 am GMT -4

If anything, the part when Ted bought the house, and every scene regarding the house, was pure HIMYM-priceless. Really enjoyed those parts, and they do contribute to the story in a good way.

Laughed my a** off, with the “Sausage fest” jokes. xD Or, Sausage Party. T’was good. Nothing more, nothing else.

See you guys in two weeks.

  66. Jazzer |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 06:26 am GMT -4

Ooh, Episode No.24, is named Dopplegangers. < I expect pure awesomeness. And it's written by Bays & Thomas, so it must be good.

  67. Toby |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 09:03 am GMT -4

I have had a super busy week and haven’t really been able to read the blog til now.

Woah………… It seems some people have some very definite opinions about this weeks episode.

Katie09, you and I never agree on anything!!!!!!!! i loved this weeks episode. I found it though provoking and funny all at the same time. The only issue that I had with it was that it felt really close to reality for me, and that was really annoying for me. I guess it is good that I am able to relate to the characters because that is what keeps me coming back!!!

Highlights for me were definitely the Drunk or Kid thing, and the Robin and Barney interaction. It felt like it did prior to them hooking up which is what I loved about the two of them- how they had such great chemistry together just by having fun.

I thought the enormous penis things was slightly over the top……

  68. Spencer |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 11:27 am GMT -4

Colin, Found out that the episode Marissa Heller has been renamed to Robots vs. Wrestlers, and that’s going to air on the 10th. Next Episode is Twin Beds, and that’s airing on the 5th.

I got all my infos from: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460649/board/flat/146155672

  69. Vic Sparkles |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 11:29 am GMT -4

“There’s a story behind that brooch, and I’m going to hear it!” (season 2)

season 4: Barney mentions how he and Ted’s mom shared a confusing and passionate moment in short-term parking.

    MADE THE EPISODE FOR ME.

I’ve been waiting and waiting for a clever and plausible reference to past episodes, as well as some allusion to whats to come.

I also really enjoyed the home inspector, “son’bich”
I think they tried to incorporate some old tricks, with the Barney and Robin “who dun it” about Clint’s song: it was pretty well done.

Really liked this one, great songs in this episode too: I’ve noticed the shows been abandoning their use of great soundtrack because the shows have been used such gag-filled plots.

  70. katie90 |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 02:28 pm GMT -4

haha, toby, that’s what makes this site fun for me :D
howeverrrrr, i do believe your most of the time neutral eye has been blinded by the robin/barney interaction ;) but respecting your opinion, i’ll have to give it a re-watch. you’re right about the characters, at least.
i have to ask, though: did you find the barney-laughing-at-robin-crying-OVER-and-OVER-again-thing funny? seriously, they did it with marshall’s pants.. that’s what bothered me the most, i think (aside from the overdone oh-my-god-my-mom-has-sex- joke)

  71. katie90 |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 02:30 pm GMT -4

sorry, the sentence “you’re right about the characters” didn’t belong in there, i’d misunderstood something in your post (when yuo said sth about relating to the characters, i took it to mean this was finally a character and story riven episode again instead of lame episode with joke after joke..which, if you would’ve said that, i’d have agreed to :D )

  72. katie90 |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 02:31 pm GMT -4

and “riven” means “driven”. i’m shutting up now.

  73. Toby |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 02:40 pm GMT -4

Katie09, I fully admit that I am a big Robin/Barney shipper and that I think they royally screwed things up by putting them together in the manner in which they did. Therefore, it was nice to see their fun interaction together! I felt the same way in Say Cheese. My favorite Barney/Robin episode is Murtaugh when they were just hanging out as friends and having fun together. I want more of that as opposed to them making out all the time.

However, I did enjoy the episode tremendously. I was really shaken up by the realism of it for me, therefore, I haven’t gone back to watch it again, and this week has been crazy busy so I don’t really remember specifics of it that I liked.

I do agree that the clint sex jokes were getting old, but you have to realize this is coming from narrator Ted who probably amplified what happened because he was having such a hard time dealing with it.

From a psychological perspective it was very thought provoking. I really liked the aspect of him having no control over finding his wife so he buys a house because that is the one way he can control things. I also like the fact that he bought a disaster area of a house because it symbolizes his feelings about his own love life and how it is in ruins, and it also reflects how he feels about everyone moving on and him being stuck in life. (sorry, occupational hazard).

  74. katie90 |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 03:19 pm GMT -4

ok, i admit, i don’t see himym as anything psychological. and while i do think a lot can be read into it, at this point, i feel like “deep” stories are just a lucky by-product to the writers sitting around, trying to come up with a lot of sitcom-y jokes. however, i have faith in the show, as it always pops out great episodes in unexpected moments (like the one with jennifer lopez or barney’s perfect week, both of whom i really liked).
btw, toby.. so what did you think of glee? you think it held up to the hype (given that everybody was talking about the madonna ep since, like, october)?

  75. stefany |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 05:17 pm GMT -4

whoa… this is quite a discussion, jd are you getting this??? i think that this shows that as a community we are quite strong and whether you loved or hated the episode, HIMYM still sparks emotions and feelings we want to voice- and this seems to be a moment where all the cards are going on the table.

i have not been a fan of season 5, but i do admit that there have been some great episodes (lucas, i agree, girls vs. suits, definitions, and the playbook in particular, were very strong). i won’t even bring up my thoughts on zoo or false and say cheese again because i don’t want to think about how much i hated them.

however… i think homewreckers was a step in the right direction. by far not close to the glory days of the duel, slap bet, dowisetripla, ten sessions, or even murtaugh- but finally we see obsessive romantic ted, and hellloooooo the house!!! a tidbit of the real story- how i met your mother! and i love supportive marshall, who at the end of the day truly understands what ted’s going through.

that said, i could have have done without the barney/robin crying story (they cannot get a good subplot, its awkward and tense every time, can they just address that please!!). the clint hippie thing was way over the top (and too much like stella’s sister), and are we really throwing away a good story by just mentioning that don and robin are getting serious?!?!? we haven’t seen that guy in weeks- and suddenly robin afraid-of-commitment scherbatsky is getting serious with him? the chick who doesn’t pour cereal? c’mon. and i’m sick of lily. i can’t quite put my finger on it but there was a moment when she stopped being cute and now she’s annoying. which is sad, cause i really loved her.

loved the callback to barney having a thing for ted’s mom (the brooch!), the drunk or kid thing was great, and i’m gonna go ahead and admit that i laughed the most at this: your penis is enormous.

  76. Adriana |  Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 08:45 pm GMT -4

I really loved this episode too!! This was like a joke at every second! I laughed out loud a few times:
    1) when Ted’s mom is like “hes so cool”
2.)when teds like i’ll dance with my future wife at the wedding and hes dancing with some creepy old lady.
3.) Ted looking at naked portait of his mom and clint- “kids, there was no guitar”
4.) Clint’s song: “and the dragon…(everyones into it)
5.) Barney- “Niagra falls (robin’s tears)
6.) Marshall- “Hey buddy, u wana have some1 who isn’t having a manic episode drive?”
7.) Ted- “so i went onto this webiste that I go on when i can’t sleep”
    Everyone- “ewwww..”
8.) Ted-”So i went to my favorite real estate site..come on u know we all got one” rofl
And that was only the first 5 minutes!!
also..some really great emotional parts (i almost cried at the very end)
if u people dont think this episode was awesome, then u should stop watching the show!!

  77. PaKo89 |  Friday, April 23rd, 2010 08:09 am GMT -4

    Dammit….

Just found out there won’t be a new episode this week!
Whatsup with the schedule these last weeks.

Also when are they going to do the Robin Sparkles show?
There hasnt been a word on it since ep.07!

  78. BD |  Friday, April 23rd, 2010 07:05 pm GMT -4

I’m really surprised by the people who didn’t like this episode. This week was classic HIMYM. It wasn’t the best we’ve seen so far this year (that honor goes to “Rabbit or Duck” or perhaps “Girls VS Suits”) but it was still an excellent episode. Good thing too, considering last week’s episode was probably the worst of the series.
“Your penis is enormous.” HAHAHA :D

  79. katie90 |  Saturday, April 24th, 2010 04:48 am GMT -4

i still don’t get why everyone hated last week but enjoyed this week. for me, it was the other way around. anyway.
i kind of hate that they casually sprinkle good episodes in. it’s like..it’d just be easier for me (and better for my health, since i’m usually SO pissed off at new episodes that it cam’t be healthy :D ) if EVERY episode sicked and i could kind of move on. i really don’t want to see my dear himym characters go through anymore painfully overjoked and story-less episodes and act like anybody but themselves. but when you least expect it, there’s a great episode again and i really don’t want to miss the rare moments they can recreate true himym magic. just make ‘em all suck, i’ll stop watching and turn to my beloved dvds of the first four seasons, while i still LIKE himym ;)
    doesn’t make sense, right? i know ;)

  80. BG |  Saturday, April 24th, 2010 01:39 pm GMT -4

I disagree with those hating so hard on this episode, I thought it was excellent the drunk or kid flashbacks were great and Marshall and Ted’s relationship is kind of touching, they hadn’t really had much interaction lately. This seasons been funny but really erratic with the storylines and it seems like the writers are forcing Robin into places she doesn’t belong. My buddy and I discussed this recently and it seems like Robin is pointless now, after the her and ted thing ended for awhile she was juts in the way until the Barney thing started and now that that’s done we’re getting the whole Don situation which is completely out of charector for Robin. She was always anti-marriage and relationship, almost a female Barney and the DOn thing feels sort of wrong. In addition, Marshall and Lily seem separate from the rest of the group, the episodes are coming down to Ted and Barney’s antics. I can see the show starting to die and I hope that the 6th season is the last, it’s time for Ted to meet their mother

  81. Toby |  Sunday, April 25th, 2010 12:58 am GMT -4

    Katie09, I liked Glee a lot. u?

  82. Rainy |  Sunday, April 25th, 2010 09:39 am GMT -4

I love this week’s plot line, but really, there’s aomething wrong with the show! i don’t know whether other felt it too or not, but HIMYM doesn’t feel the same any more! The story is still good & the lines are funny, but the show emotion (or something I can’t explain) is starting to fade away little by little! I really wish that someone could bring the good old days back & hoping this is just the show ‘rough patch’!

  83. katie90 |  Sunday, April 25th, 2010 05:23 pm GMT -4

toby: yeah, i did, too. i can’t quite decide if it lived up to the hype, though, because i’d read so much about it beforehand. was a fun episode, though.

BG: i hope the sixth season will be the last, too. they need to get their stuff together and wrap it all up in a greata and himym-style way!

  84. Toby |  Monday, April 26th, 2010 08:31 am GMT -4

Katie09- I only watch Glee for the music and my huge crush on Matt Morrison (AKA Will Shuster). The story line is really lame, so the hype doesn’t really get to me. BTW did you know that How I Met Your Mother’s very own Neil Patrick Harris is guest starring on Glee in a couple of weeks?

  85. katie90 |  Monday, April 26th, 2010 02:01 pm GMT -4

i did know that! and iam certainly looking forward to it :) though i kind of worry that NPH is getting too much exposure these days. he’s great and everybody loves him but i’m sensing a backlash coming his way (like the cast of friends had when they got super-hyped during their second season). i hope that won’t happen, though, because obviously i, too, find him awesome!
also, i really really understand your crush on mr shu, cause i got one of those goin’ on as well. i like the story, too, though. it’s teenie but i need that once a week. did you hear their considering a britney-themed episode? hope that doesn’t happen, won’t be anywhere near as cool the madonna thing (although..maybe if we saw sue in the red oops-bodysuit? ;) )

  86. Toby |  Monday, April 26th, 2010 02:05 pm GMT -4

I sincerely hope that there is not a Britany Episode.

I also love Jonathon Groff- he is incredibly hot- but he is Gay :( . (not that I would have had a shot with him if he were straight)

Yeah, NPH is becoming huge. I wonder how that effects the rest of the cast.

  87. katie90 |  Monday, April 26th, 2010 04:29 pm GMT -4

Is he the Jesse kid? I don’t know. I’ll stick to Mr Shu. You don’t see a man that pretty who can sing and dance every day :D

Good point about the himym cast. Though the cast seems pretty cool and not the kind of people to get jealous when someone’s in the spotlight all the time. But you never know, right? Plus, as it’s been mentioned on here – a LOT, i might add – the writers seem to be reacting to NPH’s growing popularity by basically making himym “The Barney Show” some weeks. And I think we all agree that’s not necessarily a good thing. Though, again, I have to say, I love that dude. I spent more hours than I care to admit watching his interviews on Ellen and Rent performances on youtube :)

  88. Toby |  Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 02:17 pm GMT -4

I know what you mean, I love that man!!!!!!

  89. Alex |  Sunday, May 2nd, 2010 12:07 pm GMT -4

This episode, while better than Zoo or False, still pretty much sucked. This show has been on its way down the crapper since “Wait For It” (the beginning of season 3). I’ll admit that there have been some great exceptions (the platinum rule, sorry bro, the fight, the perfect week) but you can’t watch “Drumroll Please” now and say honestly that this show has gotten better. The brand of comedy has gotten significantly dumber and it’s not so much about over the top romantic Ted or any Ted at all for that matter. Barney is cool but he definately should not be the star. Give us more Ted and I wouldn’t mind waiting for “mom” if they brought Victoria back. She was the best of Ted’s girlfriends. I LIKE RANTING but I hate mindless television which is what this show has become.
