Season 5, Episode 22: Robots vs. Wrestlers Preview

It’s all new episodes from here on out. Tonight is the first of the final three episodes of the season. The title is a bit confusing, and I’m not quite sure what it might mean. Pictures from the episode, like the one above, are on the LA Times web site. Tonight’s episode is full of guest stars including Arianna Huffington, Peter Bogdanovich, and Michael York. What are all these fancy folks doing slumming it with the gang? I’m looking forward to finding out.
Leave your comments here. I’ll try to get a recap up as soon as I can. Feel free to send in your own and I’ll post it here.

I have a feeling tonight is the night we actually see the mother. The preview talking about a swanky party just gives me that feeling…
FrankQB | May 10, 2010 @ 10:33 pm
That was a legitimately good episode. Nothing big happened, but it was character driven and arose from real-life friendship growing-apart realities. Loved the use of the guest stars in a non-useless way as in the case of so many others this year like Jennifer Lopez et al.
Good laughs and I enjoy that we finally got to see Marshall and Lily setting a deadiine on babies. It’s about time.
8.5/10
Gisella | May 10, 2010 @ 10:42 pm
I love Ted, and all the things about friends mocking at you is truthe, I’ve bee there.. but at the end friendship is stronger.. And double gangers!! Just Barney is missing!!..
Colin | May 10, 2010 @ 11:46 pm
I expected them to stretch out Robin’s seperation from the group, as well as the dopplegangers. But oh well. It was good to see some progress in the Lily/Marshall storyline as it pertains to them having a baby. And it was also funny and odd seeing Barney being the one freaking out about the group falling apart. I would’ve thought it would be Lily freaking out.
Scoundrel | May 11, 2010 @ 2:10 am
I really liked this episode. I love it when they show us real aspects of life. Lately we have mostly seen Barney’s strange-but-awesome bachelor life, and even though the jokes are cute, I’m kinda tired of it and need some more “reality” as seen in early HIMYM.
That’s why I liked this episode: Marshall and Lily talked about having a baby and setting a deadline for it. Early this season Ted said that they saw all the dopplegangers until the end of the summer this year, so the deadline is set to the end of this season, which is pretty good, ’cause that means we’ll have some baby action in the next season.
In addition, we saw Ted getting mocked by the gang. I’m really familiar with this: I want to say something a bit more sophisticated that I find interesting, but I hold myself back because it’s not the kind of stuff your friends would find interesting too.
And the ending, when Ted said that they all went to their separate ways eventually. It saddens me a little bit, but it’s so true. When you hang out with your friends you think it’ll last forever, that you will do this even when you’re all older, and that you’ll be in every big event in your friends life.. but then time does its magic and you find yourself dealing with other things in life, wondering what happened to these days. In some of the friends you stay in touch, but there are the ones you keep wondering how their life turned out to be.
(The robots were TOTALLY AWESOME, by the way.)
Blue French Horn | May 11, 2010 @ 2:13 am
Completely agree with you, Frank QB.
This was the first episode in several weeks that I genuinely enjoyed the whole way through. And I was laughing. Out loud. Which hasn’t been happening enough when I’ve watched this show lately.
Looking forward to a good ending to an up-and-down season!
katie90 | May 11, 2010 @ 3:00 am
All in all a good episode. The pretentious douche-party was right up ted’s alley – still, i was glad when he realized he wasn’t THAT douchey. Mexican wrestler ted was awesome and way better than the barney doppelganger i’ve seen on spoiler stills. HOW awesome was ted’s cardbord box labeled pot lids when they were moving in? I love these little callbacks. The marissa thing was funny but they could’ve built it up more, like show us over a course of a couple of episodes that they always get her mail and wonder about her – and then finally meeting her. Also i didn’t quite buy that the rich chick once lived in ted’s apartment which isn’t really that fancy. And when she didn’t react to lily’s soap opera thing, i kept waiting for her to reveal herself as another girl just passing herself off as marissa, like lily was trying to. You know?
Colin | May 11, 2010 @ 4:41 am
Katie, I totally agree with you. Are we really supposed to believe that was indeed Marissa? Or is it possible there’s another Marissa out there? Besides, the invitation went to the apartment. How would Marissa get to the party to begin with?
NCUK | May 11, 2010 @ 5:05 am
maybe they’ll do something about her in coming episodes. if not it was a bit of a poorly thought through story line
NCUK | May 11, 2010 @ 5:05 am
(loved the episode though. especially the elevator bit at the end!!!)
donof | May 11, 2010 @ 6:44 am
The way she announced loudly that she was Marissa, probably means that she wasn’t. Good call Katie90, you might be right……..she didn’t react to anything they thought they knew about her.
Buxton | May 11, 2010 @ 7:05 am
I think she might appear in the following episodes. I like the season 4 arc they had. Loved the episode heaps though, watching it for a second time tonight.
Rainy | May 11, 2010 @ 8:04 am
this episode is a good one! it’s funny & it shows another side of friendship
these things really happen in a real life friendship but like ted, we still stick around to our friends because they know us best
ps. can’t wait for barney’s doppelgangers, can’t imagine what that guy would look like!!!
jons | May 11, 2010 @ 8:55 am
….The episode was good, real good..but there is a bug bothering me all along..that girl Marrissa, I have a strange feeling about her, I mean, the last feeling of that kind I had at 12.ep.03.se.(No tomorrow)..the girl Ted bumps to at the party, for long time I thought she was the mother…Now this one, she is obviously college educated, vast knowledge like Ted, and i wouldn’t be surprised if she plays the bass too…But how she could be at economics 305? Anyway…The story that, at the beginning goes “i really wonder how she looks like”, to get to the end of the ep without a single information about her like “i never saw her again” or that kind of things..that ain’t over!! And if there would be a good time to start the buildup toward the and of the series, or to the meeting of the mother, now is the time..
jen209 | May 11, 2010 @ 9:25 am
No one has mentioned this yet, so I’m going to throw it out there. My favorite joke of the episode: Willam…DeFOE…Willam…DeFOE…
Marshall is totally right, and if someone ever said that to me at a party, I would talk to him for the rest of the night! (and I AM the type of person that could enjoy a party full of pretentious people like that, though I would have the self awareness to know we were all being douchy)
Zidge Dog | May 11, 2010 @ 10:14 am
Overall, I liked the episode. For a while, I haven’t believed some of the gang’s actions (especially the “mugged by a monkey” bit, but also the laughs everytime someone made a fart noise to interrupt Docuhey Ted), but the genuine excitement from LAME and Barney watching Mexican Wrestler Ted destroy the robot was awesome.
Those robots were so awesome. I hope this becomes a yearly tradition on the show.
The bumper has been missed, and tonight’s was hilarious. I wish Marshall had tried some of his fish material when his Willem Dafoe joke didn’t go over.
There could have been a lot more done with Marissa. I hope that plot reemerges. I’m with you – I don’t think she’s the Marissa they were looking for. Great plot idea.
Also, did you notice how Marissa pronounced “renaissance”? That and Lily’s cocknety accent were some nice callbacks to one of my favorite episodes ever.
Barney was drunk two weeks in a row. I have no problem with that. Lately, I prefer him drunk. I feel like that justifies the caricature of his character he has become. Barney needs to be more awesome. He’s all slapstick, no bad-ass lately for me. To justify my criticism, I’ll use his eating of the wasabi last week and his giving up so easily on his lines at the party tonight. I’ll also mention his banging of the gong tonight, which would work if it wasn’t followed by the comical spazz dance he did afterwards. It was funny, but it wasn’t Barney.
And as long as I have my critical hat on, I’ll throw out the question of Robin’s absence – is she back now? Was this a one episode hiatus for her? I would have liked some explanation as to why she decided to show up again. I think this plot point is actually believable and shouldn’t be dismissed away. When Barney mentioned his concerns about the group drifting apart, with LAME having a baby and Robin getting married and Ted being eaten alive by cats, it seemed to be a pretty acurate idea of how these characters would end up (minus the cats… kinda…). I hope the show captures some of the realism the characters had in the first few seasons.
Marshall’s line about telling Lily to get in the right lane was really great. Is anybody else super-psyched about Jason Segel’s muppet movie?
That was Edgar Allen Poe’s!
All in all, I’m glad I saw it, but still frustrated by some of the characters and writing. I feel like a lot could be fixed if they decide next season will be the last.
aaron | be awesome instead | May 11, 2010 @ 11:44 am
I liked the ep. The closing did make me sad but like everyone here is saying it’s an inevitable part of growing up.
I loved the robot’s line “Is that all you got bitch” (I know it loses effect in text but imagine it in robot voice)
I talk about it some on my site but I think the fact that Robin shows up at the end means she and Don are over, or at least they will be by the finale.
Toby | May 11, 2010 @ 12:13 pm
I liked this episode a lot. I loved douchbag Ted!!!! I love when he gets all pretentious and stuff, its kind of sexy
.
I was excited to meet the 4th doppelganger, but I was kind of hoping for Ted and Barney’s doppelganger to be a couple.
I loved Barney freaking out about dying alone because he thought that invitation was for Robin’s wedding!!!!
I am glad the baby thing is going to be happening soon for LAME
Last but not least, the ending did make me feel very sad for a multitude of reasons. BUT its so nice that they make sure to at least get together once a year for Robots Vs. Wrestlers.
BGeo | May 11, 2010 @ 12:22 pm
I felt there was a lot of foreshadowing in this episode, so I actually did think it was an important episode, not to mention a generally all around great episode. I love himym
Matt | May 11, 2010 @ 12:36 pm
the thing I keep wondering about is Ted’s resemblance to his doppleganger. All the other dopplegangers have ties to a part of each characters personality, like stripper lily. I’m failing to see any connection between ted and a professional wrestler.
Toby | May 11, 2010 @ 12:37 pm
@ MAtt, I think Ted has a violent streak under all that pretention. Hence him getting so excited about Robots Versus Wrestlers. Maybe his vilent side was awoken during The Fight
Meister | May 11, 2010 @ 2:24 pm
I liked this episode, particularly the callback to Lily’s horrible British accent. And (though this isn’t so much a callback as an on going theme) the fact that Robin’s show is so unimportant she can take a phone call while on the air and no one cares.
For those of you who think she wasn’t really Marissa, how could she have even known about the party? A pretentious party like that would not likely send out more than the one invite, but the real Marissa could have run across whomever was hosting the party and then they could have told her about it.
@Zidge Dog, yes I am uber excited for that movie.
Bill | May 11, 2010 @ 4:13 pm
I agree with some people that “Marissa” could have not been the real Marissa, but then this fake one must have been to many of these parties because she knew many of the people and wasn’t a first time visitor like the gang was. I do like the idea that there is more to that plot and hope they show more of it in the future.
Starney Binson | May 11, 2010 @ 5:51 pm
Or, you know, Marissa also got invited by phone and, as such, didn’t care about the written invitation.

The trailer for The Wedding Bride is out!

blarg | May 11, 2010 @ 6:28 pm
Barney: One word. Made up. Douchepocalypse!
great episode, mexican wrestler ted was really the topper for me.
i’m with katie, i expected the girl to be just using the name to get into the party, then later reveal she was just crashing it too. this would at least allow them to continue a side story line with who the original marisa is
NCUK | May 11, 2010 @ 6:41 pm
i think it would be too far fetched for marissa to be the mother
katie90 | May 11, 2010 @ 6:52 pm
huh, glad to see i wasn’t the only one wondering about marissa:) don’t think she’s mom, though, cause really she was kind of arrogant and bitchy – and for that, ted could’ve just married karen. plus, it woud suck if ted picked a girl that wouldn’t fit right into the group. and also – he wouldn’t! he’s the kind of guy that needs his wife to be his best friend hence she has to be able to drink like lily and make lame jokes like robin
oh damn you, stupid american videos! i cannot watch the wedding bride trailer. though i kind of fear they went overboard on that one – i mean, jason lewis and malin akerman? i don’t think they need these people to guest star, nobody’s would’ve done the job just fine.
can anyone tell me what’s happening in the trailer?
Jazzer | May 11, 2010 @ 7:00 pm
To think, that I actually doubted the show, and thought that this week’s episode will be a big downer. Boy, was I wrong. It’s amazing how, no matter how bad or stale the show might get, it get’s up right on it’s feet in a matter of seconds, and still remains one of the best shows, ever.
The season finale is, and it hurts me to admit, mostly to myself that Season 6 will probably be the last season of the show. The show that changed my life, so much that words can’t describe. To actually remember staying up late, in May/June ’09, waiting for a new episode, then watching it with utmost satisfaction.
As for the episode. I enjoyed it highly. HIGHLY. It has a deep meaning, and really shows how far the show will go, and what steps it will make in the future that is near us. Loved the fact how Ted finally got into a society he was really respected in, with all the douchey-ness and a smartass he can be from time to time. Everything just fuses together, to form one amazing episode this week.
The show is getting more realistic, solving some problems that occur while growing up. It sadens me, and probably a lot of other people who saw this episode, but that’s the way life goes.Thankfully, the people you are at best with, you stay in touch, make gatherings and still hang out. That’s the beauty of friendship.
Sometimes, I just want this show to last forever. It’s amazing. Or at least to last for another 5 years. I know that’s impossible. I know. I simply don’t want it to end.
Take care people. See you next week.
Jazzer | May 11, 2010 @ 7:04 pm
As for the whole Marrissa debate, she is not the mother. As you remember in the first ep of Season 4, Ted got into the wrong class, into Economics 305 [305, right?], she would have remembered him.
Second, she lived in Ted’s appartment for years before Ted > Which leads to logical thinking, that she is old as Ted, older then Ted, or at best – a year/two young then ted, still not young enough to go to colledge.
Don’t really have the time to correct my spelling mistakes if there are any, pretty dizzy for a long and exhausting day. What’s important is to spread the message. =]
katie90 | May 11, 2010 @ 7:09 pm
i forgot: the guy in the elevator was THE est last scene ever. loved it! unconnected to the group yet so brilliant
Rachael | May 11, 2010 @ 10:31 pm
As far as Marissa being the real Marissa goes, it is obvious she didn’t respond to any of the things they already knew about the Apartment-Marissa Heller. Yet she was obviously familiar with the people at the party, who would have known her by name. It is not impossible then to conclude that there is more than one Marissa Heller, and the invitation–intended for Party-Marissa Heller–was sent to Apartment-Marissa Heller’s old address by mistake. Party-Marissa Heller would know about the party anyway, knowing the people there, so she would just assume her invitation was lost in the mail.
Joe B. | May 12, 2010 @ 3:27 am
Am I the only one who realized the joke the writers made with Ted being “the biggest Douche in the Universe”? Wasn’t that a reference to the article that a critic recently wrote about Ted being the biggest Douche in the universe?!
Joe B. | May 12, 2010 @ 3:30 am
I can’t find the actual article but it appeared in Entertainment Weekly:
http://thetvaddict.com/2010/03/23/blogger-beat-down-in-defense-of-ted-mosby/
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | May 12, 2010 @ 2:33 pm
Are you guys really saying that the super-educated, slightly snooty, Marissa wouldn’t take random collage classes just to “learn?” She could totally have been in that class! Plus, who’s to say she was a student? Maybe she’s on the faculty and was was doing a review. Also I’m with Rachael on this being a different Marissa Heller. Something was fishy there….
I LOVE the trailer for The Wedding Bride! When I saw Jed’s red cowboy boots I choked on my cereal.
Great episode! I wish they would spread some of this plot-moving material around instead of a season being relevant-relevant-filler-filler-filler-filler-filler-relevant-relevant. …Those were episode descriptions if you couldn’t tell.
BGeo | May 12, 2010 @ 9:00 pm
Two things:
1) We know that the mother was at the bar on St. Patrick’s day when Ted and Barney were there. I don’t see Marisa doing shots with “wooo” girls or anyone of the sort. Marisa is not the mother.
2) I’ve been so psyched for “The Wedding Bride” since last May, and the trailer looks hilarious. Not going to drop any casting spoilers, but the actor portraying Ted, could not be funnier.
Thomas | May 13, 2010 @ 7:33 am
Awesome episode. A little bit of a slow start but everything from the party onwards was gold. The trailer for ‘The Wedding Bride’ was great too, really looking forward to seeing what goes on with that.
Tippy | May 13, 2010 @ 9:45 am
Did anyone else notice the “van smoot”? Isn’t that the mansion where Lily and Marshall were going to get married (or did get married)? Shouldn’t they have mentioned that? I did like the episode, but thought this wasn’t one of the best. Sorry guys. I am, however, looking forward to the Wedding Bride on Monday.
PaKo89 | May 13, 2010 @ 4:00 pm
When I read the comments here I was like WHAAAT, watched the episode again. It’s still WHAAAT.
I must have watched a different episode than you guys, cause I pretty much hated this one.
Common the fartjokes were just horrible. And why the hell did Robin walk into the bar??
Did like mexican Ted though.
And Im really looking forward to the next episode.
Blue French Horn | May 13, 2010 @ 5:13 pm
I really don’t understand why people have mother theories about people Ted has met. The show is called “How I Met Your Mother”, not “How I Met Your Mother, and Dated Her for A While, and Got Married, and Then Had Kids”. I don’t think we’ll see the mother until the end (or, if we see her before then, we’re not going to know her name and see Ted hanging out with her for a few episodes). It just seems kind of silly to think that every girl Ted meets and likes is the mother of his children… the show is over when that actually happens.
vahid | May 14, 2010 @ 5:44 pm
Marissa is definitely not the mother, as the mother is a student, living in a flat sharing.
I don’t think that season 6 will be the last season, as the writers have said in interview, they would carry on with the show as long as it is successful. This show is 1000 times better than friends, and I guess that we will have more seasons than friends had. Maybe we even will have “How I met your father” after the show is over.
a picture of barney’s doppelganger is on here
http://www.tv.com/how-i-met-your-mother/show/33700/episode.html
Meister | May 15, 2010 @ 12:59 am
The two Marissa theory is plausible but I am more inclined to believe that it could have just been her junk mail that they’ve been getting over the years. I think of this as I got a magazine today that I have never read before nor have any interest in reading yet my name is clearly on the address label. I mean it has been years, so clearly anything she actually cared about she would have changed the address for and the rest might have been something she liked a decade ago or junk mail.
I loved the Wedding Bride trailer, particularly the critic’s comments.
Ajskreem | May 16, 2010 @ 6:10 am
I digged that “Willem dafoe” joke so much, I made a dedicated site for willem….DAFOE! http://www.malcolmyork.dk/willem…dafoe/
Kushagra Verma | May 16, 2010 @ 11:09 am
i loved that wrestler ted… i actually like all of those duplicates.. lesbian robin, moustache marshall and stripper lily..
i also loved that sound that they made when ted started talkin those high-class things… (POO)
Little Barney | May 16, 2010 @ 1:56 pm
Its kind of clever of how they used these duplicates, when we saw stripper lilly and lesbian robin, i thought this was just purely a joke that had no meaning, its cool how these small clues were pointing to something very big, i guess that is life. Well done to the writers.
BTW we will see barneys double in the finale, as the episode is called doppleganger. LAME will be trying for a baby next season, I just hope they don’t use the chandler and monica storyline.
I prefer Barney from season 1 & 2. He was more bad-ass.
High Hoper | May 16, 2010 @ 7:40 pm
70/30. I liked it, but some things that I don’t like are really the weak points of this season. You really wouldn’t believe that Lily, a teacher, would stop Ted that way? And Marshall?
They better give us a proper season finale. I am hoping from now that, now we know there will be at least 7 seasons, that season 6 is better than this…
Sleeks3000 | May 17, 2010 @ 3:15 pm
Maybe I need to re-watch this episode because I didn’t really think it was all that great. There were definitely some laughs and the message about friends gradually forming their separate lives rung true. I also liked that they dived a little deeper into Ted’s personality, but I just wasn’t crazy about the way they pulled it off. I found it really annoying that Barney kept repeating “Robots vs Wrestlers.” He really over-acted. For those of who have complained that Barney has been too emotional this season, I’m surprised no one brought it up for this episode. I also really didn’t like the way they handled Lilie and Marshall’s discussion about having babies. It felt forced as if they only included it to address the fans inquiries. While some people might think that’s cool, I don’t want the script to be driven by the fans, I want the fans to be driven by the show. Overall, not a bad episode, but don’t think it deserves the amount of praise it’s getting.
Sleeks3000 | May 17, 2010 @ 3:18 pm
O by the way, loved Mexican Wrestler Ted.
Tom | June 11, 2010 @ 12:20 am
It’s WRESTLERS

Its our tradition!
