best part of the episode by far was when Ted was walking away and everyone was walking by with their baggage, the first one in the background says “Cubs Fan”.

Gonna catch it soon, I’m overexcited just by the title.

What was the name of the starting and ending music?

Unbelievably disappointing. Flat, pointless, and a waste of a great chance to build up some actual steam for the season finale.
Yes, the movie-within-the-show was mildly entertaining for the switcharound of Ted’s and Tony’s roles. And the callbacks were nice – boots, goat, butterfly tattoo, etc. But the fact that so many callbacks to older episodes were the high points only shows how much the series has fallen this season and most of last.
Maybe I’m just frustrated at the total lack of action by ANY of the characters. Lily, Barney, and Robin were pretty much decoration this time around. Marshall had one long scene. That was about it. The sync-up of Ted and the movie at the end went far too long to be believable, and Barney’s personality is now so off-the-wall that he’s more distracting than at all entertaining.
Think about “Shelter Island,” the episode that “The Wedding Bride” actually portrayed: we saw Ted in wholehearted love. We saw Barney humorously agonize over surviving other women’s advances long enough to wait for Robin to arrive. We saw Barney and Lily work perfectly in their weird dynamic, where Lily knows exactly how his mind is working and Barney knows it. We saw a good scene between Robin and Barney, one that had an actual conclusion and moved their connection forward significantly. We saw a GREAT scene between Ted and Robin, one that summed up their entire relationship perfectly and naturally. And the jokes were on, nearly every time.
That’s what an episode, even a “recent” episode, of HIMYM should look like. This was total filler, and not even good filler at that.

i really didn’t like it. i feel like this season is moving us nowhere in terms of the mother. the only episode that i can remember that had something big in terms of the mother was girls vs suits. other than that, i’m not liking this season so much, and this particular episode was everything i hate about this season, they had great guest stars in it and they didn’t use them right. like RickyKidd said, everyone but Ted was a decoration on this episode.
i don’t watch this show just for ted, and i feel like lily and marshall are having no development whatsoever, i think it’s pretty predictable that they will find barney’s doppleganger by the season finale and they’ll start making babies, but that’ll be something for next season, barney is still barney. robin is now with don, and when she did say she was gonna be away from the gang for some time i thought something was gonna happen, some development in terms of barney’s friendship with robin or ted’s feelings, but nothing, she was back by the next episode. please don’t get me wrong, i love the show, i just feel like the last couple of episodes have been fillers, and next week is the season finale, we should be getting something!
by this time last season, barney was in love with robin and we were all up on that story, ted was starting a job as a teacher and we were all mislead to believe that would give us some mother development, but what did we get? ted met the mother’s roomate and saw the mother’s foot! THAT’S IT!
again, i love the show, and i stay up til late to watch it online (i’m from argentina, the show only airs here on direct tv, and i don’t have it) and i’m just dissapointed.
on the brightside, i do like it when they change up barney’s gestures.
for example, on robin 101, the whole thumbs up being the middle finger and now kiss being f***

I’ve mixed feelings about this one. One thing you can bank on this show to do is hit on issues grounded in reality. It is, perhaps, the biggest truth of the dating scene that everyone has baggage and it is only fair that we have an episode on it. This season has been full of intriguing ideas that have been executed with mediocrity. The only time I laughed was during the callbacks. they were really funny, especially the first time they show the red cowboy boots. Even though Barney had just a few scenes, he was the Barney we know, not the diluted by love and emotions Barney we have been sayign lately.
This coudl have been a good filler, but the ending was unbelievable. The voice-over during the movie is unbelievably cheesy. However, the last 2 minutes where Ted’s girlfriend reveals her baggage is unforgivable. From the moment the idea is introduced, you hope that it does not end like this. That is typically bad sitcom territory and it is ironically sad that a show that rose on the strength of its solid charactures has to employ caricatures and hackneyed plot ideas (in this case, girl’s baggage being outrageous) episode after episode. If this was season 1, we woudl not have had the last 5 minutes. After the satisfyign scene outside the theater where we are told about accepting baggage, the episode deserved a better ending.
On a completely different note, Josh Radnor is a fantastic actor. You may or may not think Ted Mosby is a douche, but it is impossible not to appreciate Radnor for portraying the character perfectly with all the little quirks that Marshall describes in this wpisode. In a season where genuine laughs ahave been hard to come by, I have found Radnor’s brilliant performance as one of main reasons that the show is still watchable.
Btw, did you notice that in the scene at the end, at least, two girls had “slept with Barney” written on their baggage? that was most hilarious part of the episode.

that was just bad.

Wow, super negative much? I loved this episode, probably the funniest of the season.
Colin | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 03:27 am GMT -4
I was hoping for a Stella appearance. After all the crap she and her guy put Ted through, you’d think they’d get their commupance. Anyway, while I was entertained by this episode, I didn’t think it lived up to the hype. If I had my way, this week’s episode would’ve taken place last week, minus Robin hanging out with the gang. And then tonight, we have her return as Lily and Marshall decide to have a baby upon seeing Barney’s doppleganger, leading into next week’s season finale.

..an average episode, maybe a little under the average..the best part…”who the kiss are you?”…i expecTed more from this one, but you get what you get…will see the finale, but even with a great final episode i would rate this season with a 7/10…maybe less, but let’s say 7 cause the first 3 seasons and partially the 4th se were unforgettable..

Several things:
1.) What a disappointing/cheesy episode! The whole Ted monologue in the movie theater at the end was awful. And the acting in the “movie” itself was just bad! That movie, if it were real, would NEVER gross that much or go worldwide!! It would go straight to DVD.
2.) Why on earth would Tony bash Ted so badly? At the end of season 4, he comes to Ted to apologize and tell him he’s a truly great guy, and then proceeds to get him his current professor job!!! HELLO?! Am I the only one who was thinking, “Tony respects Ted…why would he make a movie bashing him?!” Also, do you really think Stella would be so cold as to allow Tony to make this movie? Really poor writing decision in my opinion.
3.) How did that girl not ONCE think or say, “Jed Mosley? Hrrrm that sounds just like Ted Mosby.” I mean seriously!
I did, however, LOVE the red boots callback (“PULLING. THEM. OFF!”), Marshall’s walk down the street (he totally would be this way!), Barney’s, “Now kiss him!”… kids, he didn’t say kiss, AND last but not least all the baggage bags at the end. They were fun to pause and read!
I do love this show. It’s amazing. Best show I’ve seen in a LONG time. I have watched every single episode at least a dozen times each. It’s fantastic. But I really do think they need to get back to season 1 and 2 and quit doing sub-par episodes. It’s like, you guys set the bar for yourselves! So you have to set the new one even higher! We fans will always be loyal to the show, but let’s go somewhere next season. I’m sad season 5 is coming to an end, but so happy they are doing a season 6. DO US PROUD Craig and Carter!
P.S. I’m a first time commenter so I hope I did ok! I love this blog, but I hope JD doesn’t abandon ship next season! =)
NCUK | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 05:52 am GMT -4
I actually really liked the episode, the film was cheesy and so it kind of reflected that. I liked how they used love actually music for the “emotional scenes” and all the callbacks obviously.
I did NOT like the end but i didn’t want her to be a serious relationship so i guess i’m not too bothered. I know this season has not been the greatest, but i guess it does take time to get over people, but now ted has had over a season and a half to get over stella so if they don’t give us something real next season it will be ridiculous. I wish they had thrown in one semi serious relationship that ended because of his baggage or something but nevermind.
Whoever said that you hated that it was all about ted i disagree, it is essentially what it is all about. ted. And his story. I think it was nice that he has got some more screen-story time recently.
Barney is getting annoying, he hasn’t got any good catchphrases anymore (i can’t even remember the last time he said legendary, suit up or [funny words] five) and he has no depth. I really think they have a lot to sort out next season. That doesn’t mean that i hated this season or there was nothing good in it, there just wasn’t many WOW episodes, apart from girls vs suits or the super date one, but they were about someone else, maybe next season they just need to bring back ted!!
Buxton | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 07:19 am GMT -4
I quite liked this episode and the episode did lead me to half-believe that this girl was The One, mainly because of her ‘no baggage’ (but the last scene just came out of nowhere and ruined it).
I agree with NCUK about Ted having more screen time because the show is essentially about him. Also a few weeks back everyone was like ‘Why is this show all about Barney and not Ted anymore’ yet people are now saying that ‘Ted gets hogs the limelight in this episode’.
I have to disagree with switching this episode around with last weeks because most of you guys will probably hate the episode (Wedding Bride) and lose faith on Robots v Wrestlers.
I’m sorry if I sound like I am rambling on but I loved the callbacks. Bring on as many as possible please, but without repeating them over.
Finally, I think the writers have toned down Barney as a character this week, although we only saw him in two locations, one scene in the bar and in the movie theatre.
Overall, it was a cheesy episode that made me laugh. But whats wrong with being cheesy?
Kushagra Verma | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 07:31 am GMT -4
Is it me or did everyone wanted to puke after watching this episode cause it was awful. What is happening to this show.. I mean first the home wrckers then this one.
Katie | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 08:10 am GMT -4
Filler, but an amusing one.
to be honest, what made the episode not as good was the amount of movie they showed… the cast of the ‘movie’ isn’t remotely as good as the cast of the show, especially when they (the ‘movie’ cast) are *trying* to be awful.
With most episodes this season, I’ve sort of liked them the first watch, then watched them again within 24 hours, liked them a lot more, and then every time i go back and watch them, loved them.
This one, i liked it a lot the first time, but the second time it was blah.
it was like watching a chick flick- first time, i smiled and thought it was funny/cute, second time, the charm was lost.
I mean, i guess that was the point, but- why so much?
Also, did anyone else notice that the music throughout the episode was the same as the music used in Love Actually?
Ari | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 08:41 am GMT -4
I was not a fan of this episode. The overacting in the movie (and yes, I’m sure it was on purpose… either that or they’re all horrible actors) was just painful to watch, and the comment above where have the characters were just there but not doing anything… so true. My favorite line was Barney’s “this is outrageous, who the kiss are you?” and that was about it. I think I cringed about 95% of the time during this episode.
That being said… maybe I’m being naive but I’m hoping this episode is what gets Ted back on track. Maybe this whole season has been kinda frustrating for so many people because Ted has been aimless, and maybe THAT’S because he got stood up by Stella. Maybe now he’ll be more on a mission or something?
Or maybe I’m just reaching.
Bill | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 08:43 am GMT -4
This episode sums up what has changed in this show from the first two seasons to now; they take everything past the realistic and believable ( the Realievable!!(?)). I was okay with the idea that Tony could write a story that maybe could get made into a movie, but come on, the 5th highest grossing movie of all time? Please. Why couldn’t it just be a mediocre movie? HIMYM used to take things just to the edge of what could be believable, a slightly heightened optimism and romance than reality. But now things are just ridiculous and most of the characters are an exaggerated form of what they used to be, pulling out only their most extreme characterisms and displaying them all the time. I think each has becoming very one dimensional. I used to feel a real connection to the show and the issues they tackled (I’m 28, single, still trying to figure stuff out), but now I roll my eyes more at the situations presented and hope those things don’t happen to me.
Liam | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 08:49 am GMT -4
The problem really was the cast of the fake film. I liked the episode overall right up untill the end scene where she turns out to just be another throwaway girl. They need to start keeping these people around for more than 20 minutes at a time.
I did enjoy barneys red cowboy boot question tho. It’s funny to see him trying to be a dick for his own personal fun.
BGeo | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 09:17 am GMT -4
May have been the year long build up for it, but it didn’t meet my expectations.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked, but just wanted a little more.
Barney was hilarious (when used), and I liked the overall premise of “baggage”
P.S. I agree with Peter. The “cubs fan” was hilarious
Rainy | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 11:03 am GMT -4
Goshhhhh, this episode rocks! I love every part of it! I laugh like crazy but really, it’s kind of sorry for Ted though. I can’t bare seeing Ted as the bad guy. I love the scene of people carrying baggages & Royce help him carrying it. That’s just really sweet, although, the ending turns out to be that way! lol
ps. At first I though we’ll see the real Tony & Stella in this episode, really want Ted to kill them here!
JS | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 01:44 pm GMT -4
I’m a big fan of HIMYM and enjoy most episodes, so it’s really hard for me to admit that I didn’t like this one. I guess the big problem for me was that i felt it really wierd that Tony would make a film like the Wedding Bride. I mean, in the end of season 4, he feels bad about having stolen Stella away from Ted, so why would he lie and hurt Ted like this? It’s just wierd and doesn’t ad up, at least not to me. And like someone said earlier, why would Stella have let Tony write such a film?
I also kind of wish that the ending was different, maybe that the women (can’t remember her name) left Ted when she found out that Jed Mosley was based on him. It feels really mean to say but I just think that it would have been less predictable.
With that said, I’m really looking forward to the next episode!
Zidge Dog | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 02:04 pm GMT -4
Yep. The “realievability” of the show keeps going away. It’s so easy to explain away some of the implausibility by having Narrator Ted say, “Maybe the movie wasn’t as bad as all of that, but you kids will never know as you are never allowed to watch that movie ever.” But they don’t. The jokes are too much, too hokey. Barney has been more unbelievable all season, although tonight he was mostly under control. Marshall and Lily have become less defined as characters and more outlandish. Robin seems to actually maturing and all after the break-up with Swarley, but it apparently is all going on off-camera. The realievability from the first seasons was what made me love the show – the situations seemed familiar, the characters were realistic, and the romantic ideals seemed possible. Now? It’s different. I know some episodes have been better than others, but I still long for the earlier seasons.
There were some great bits in this episode, for sure. The baggage bit was classic HIMYM, minus the last scene. (I will say that I like the size of the “Shares a bed with brother” case.) The Marshall niceness was in character and pretty entertaining, although, of course, under-utilized. There were tons of callbacks, both in the movie and out (Major Issues *salutes*). That stuff makes me happy.
What didn’t work for me was the movie plot in general. Ted should be hurt more and he should be able to call out Stella and Tony for the way he is portrayed. The idea that the movie is successful is ridiculous too. They could have had a lot of fun with the stereotypical chick-flick bits – the sassy gay friend, the street wise “oh no he didn’t” black friend, the foul-mouthed old woman – but instead they went for ridiculous slapstick.
I think my problem with the show now is that there are so many wasted opportunities. This episode and the Robin leaving plot and LAME’s baby planning and everything all seem like great concepts that are losing something in the process, while before the episodes seemed so meticulously planned out and executed. It might be because CBS put the pressure on them to make the show less serialized and more “done-in-one” episodes, but it is making it descend into cliche. Here’s a show whose finale should be awaited like Lost’s, and instead we’re floundering along with no end in sight, with episodes always retconning what has happened before and not allowing for any substantial progression in storylines. Each episode doesn’t need to include some glimpse of the mother, but it does need to have some significance to the overall story of how Ted became those kids’ dad.
I still think saying next season is the last will help the show end strong and stop these episodes where nothing really advances and previous stories are hurt (such as Stella’s story now ending up with this awful movie). I know I say the same thing every week, but I need to vent because I love the show and you people share that love.
Can we start a petition to have the laugh track removed on the DVD’s? It seems like a simple edit.
I haven’t got to pause on the baggage scene yet. Can I get someone to list some more of those labels? They were pretty great.

the fact that the issues on the baggage at the end were all funny and specific shows that the classic himym funny is still in there somewhere!!
Maaaatt | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 04:26 pm GMT -4
That was a terrible episode. The worst of all 5 seasons. I love HIMYM; every other episode I’ve found funny but this one stunk. The script was cheesy and the delivery was poor. Its only saving grace was Alyson Hannigan looking hot but she wasn’t in it nearly enough. Is it me or is she getting better looking the older she gets?
Maybe I shouldn’t complain if this is the first one I’ve disliked out of 5 seasons, hey?
Jenn- GCWOK Approved | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 04:55 pm GMT -4
Yup. Unfortunately I agree with Bill and Zidge Dog. When they started down the road for the joke about Marshall falling over in his chair, I was like, “oh, no. Please, no. The show is not that bad. There must be a twist-” and then he fell over (palm to forehead!). I also couldn’t believe that Stella wouldn’t have apologized to Ted, at the VERY least, knowing what a great guy he is while letting her husband trash him like that. I try to be optimistic about the show, but this episode was just sad.

There were some very funny moments. The baggage thing is a great idea.
But this movie thing was plain crazy. This episode was between heaven and hell, mosby hell though.
marggis | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 05:43 pm GMT -4
Just a short one now: I loved it. I loved the callbacks, I truly believe that Tony would make a movie like that with some Hollywood people so that it would be amusing to the big crowd. I loved Ted comments on the movie during watching it, I loved Robin’s “a bit cheesy” comments on the romantic moves Ted made for Stella, I loved the baggage idea, loved Marshall’s walk, Ted being afraid of this girls baggage, Ted’s “Okay he definitely said it that time”, Marshall’s talk about Ted (love the music! It’s working for me), to me the “dubbing movie” part was also real, Ted could do something like that, and Kim-Song Il -referance. It was weird seeing Ted on double date after three dates though.
One Question: Where was Barney? Watching the movie over and over again?
katie90 | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 06:54 pm GMT -4
i’m gonna make it short:
didn’t like it. agree with everything you guys said you disapprove of (why would tony bash ted/why would stella allow it? why would they put the stupid last scene/marshall’s falling-over scene in that was so sitcomy?! everything was cheesy,no one except ted had anything to do, etc.) BUT i need to say this: “no can dooseville babydoll” sounds SO much like something douchey ted would say!
i sincerely hope they won’t blow the last episode.
jenn: oooh you saw scenes of it? that must have been fun. i need to check my dvd rental place
katie90 | Tuesday, May 18th, 2010 06:58 pm GMT -4
one more thing: they need to stop the replacing-bad-words/gestures-with-others-jokes. yes, the thumbs up instead of the finger was funny. bagpiping for sex was mildly entertaining. but to pull that kind of joke for the THIRD time in one season? come on! the writers are (were?) better than that!
