Ducky Tie is Almost Upon Us…
By Jordan

And so is this special lady
Everyone excited? You should be, because:
- According to this site, the season premiere pulled in 11 million viewers, while the following episode pulled in 12.2 million. Think about that. The ratings actually went up! Maybe that had something to do with 2.5 Men, but whatever.
- Check out this review from Donna Bowman on the AV Club. My favorite quote: “I watched an unremarkable sitcom pilot last night, full of actors I like but devoid of style or spark. (More about that next week.) Watching the premiere of How I Met Your Mother, by contrast, felt like the major leagues. Professionals at work both in front of and behind the camera, demonstrating impeccable timing, delivering moments of real emotion, and never forgetting what makes them funny.” Amen to that, Donna.
- According to what has been released, “Ducky Tie” will be about the following: “Ted runs into an old girlfriend and tries to make amends with her since he cheated during their relationship. Marshall and Lily make a bet with Barney that could force him to wear Marshall’s ducky tie.”
- As we know, the tie metaphor has everything to do with Barney’s wedding, so this might be interesting, but more importantly…
- Victoria is back! This writer always liked her the best out of all the “non-mothers”, simply because Ashley Williams is friggin’ adorable, but also because Ted was the one who blew it, not her (Stella, looking at you, baby-doll). Should be interesting.
Stay Tuned…
Jordan Rockwell here, you’ll be seeing more of me this season alongside JD’s posts. Check out the Sensitive Nice Guy Show if ya like (okay, shameless plug, I’ll admit, but oh well) where I often discuss HIMYM. Thanks for reading, and thanks for JD for letting me sub in!
Guest Post: Examining the Act Break
By JD
Hey guys, Steve had a comment that intrigued me greatly. He talked about this week’s episode, Natural History, being an “act break” for the show. It was one of those forehead-slapping moments and I knew Steve was onto something. I asked him to elaborate thinking he could help me organize my thoughts around it but he was nice enough to do a write up himself. And a damn good one if I do say so, I might be out of a job if Steve decides to take it full time. I was smiling more than when Ted said “Hersey Squirts” by the end of this.
PS. I just posted a piece on AMLAW that I think you guys will like. I’m not being over-promotional, this isn’t some recap of a TV show. It’s a pretty personal story from my life that centers around a certain song. If you like the sentimental stuff or identify with SOT, check it out and tell me what you think.
Now, onto Steve’s genius!
JD asked me to elaborate on the post I made in response to How I Met Your Mother’s “Natural History” episode (season 6, episode 8), specifically on my comments regarding the episode as an “act break” in the overall arc of the show.
Homewreckers Discussion: Roger’s Take
By JD
I asked last week for people to pitch in with episode recaps and you responded, a lot. Thanks! I really appreciate the help and I do this site as much yours as mine so I’m happy to post your thoughts. Reader Roger sent in his take on last week’s episode, Home Wreckers. Thanks Roger!

The How I Met Your Mother Primer
By JD

How I Met Your Mother Season 4 debuts in just a couple weeks. Based on the buzz surrounding the show at the close of last year brought on by high profile guest stars like Britney Spears and Sarah Chalke, I think that HIMYM is sitting on the bubble, and not the one where it might get cancelled, like it usually is. I think it’s set to pop this year in a big way. Season 4 will be the break-out season where HIMYM goes from underground critical darling to mainstream success. I already hear the change in the air—so many people have told me they’re getting into the show and catching up on the first seasons. That’s great news.
I know that some people, however, won’t have time or just don’t want to watch three seasons of a show. Being that How I Met Your Mother is considerably more serialized than your average sitcom, I thought it’d be nice to offer some background for those just joining the ranks of How I Met Your Mother fans.
Legendary reader Kevin helped me out with this project. What follows are his brief summaries of seasons 1-3. Think of this as a cheat-sheet, a read-along, or a “previously on How I Met Your Mother”. There’s even a handy truncated playlist of episodes for those of us who want just the gist.

Season 3 Episode 11: The Platinum Rule Discussion
By JD
This week’s recap was written by Have You Met Ted long-time fan Jason “The Mix”. Jason offered to take over this week since I’m in such a flux with the move. I’m super excited to share his thoughts with you. As Broda would say, the Force is strong with this one. Without further adieu I present Jason’s recap:
With this episode was the last new one we’ll see for a fair amount of time, however, if were we’re going to go out on any episode, I’m glad it was this one. It left us with a sense of mystery, and a cliffhanger of sorts with more than one person in Ted and Barney.
This was, as older Ted put it, the story of making decisions that we aren’t prepared to live with, “and the consequences that follow”. This episode in particular is one I found to be fairly iconically Ted, in that there are several episodes where the focus is upon Ted making a bad decision, or simply unwise, even though he knew before hand it was a bad decision to be making. In fact, that’s generally been the overlaying theme of the entire season so far. Old Ted at the beginning of the season puts it as going through what he needed to go through before he meets the mother. In the end, this episode is sort of a more hilarious stepbrother to “Nothing Good Happens After 2 AM”.
