How I Met Your Mother Music
One of the things that makes How I Met Your Mother so great is the music. The songs featured in each episode feature a good mix of genres, recognizable music, and underground indie bands, makes up one of the best soundtracks for any sitcom on television.
These pages have all the music (or at least all that we can identify) broken out by season and episode. Any songs that haven’t been identified will be listed. If you see a hole, drop me an email so we can make this list as complete as possible. This page wouldn’t be possible without the help of Mike Jonas and the other members of the IMDB How I Met Your Mother forum.

Chetan,
I don’t think there was any notable music in the 2nd and 3rd episodes. If you point out specific scenes, I can look into it.
Also, I recommend downloading the songs from iTunes music store. I plan to make some iMixes in the future for everyone’s convenience.

Hasan,
You have to tell me if you’re looking for the song from the original airing or if you’re going off of the DVD. The music, especially for that episode, is different on the DVD.

Does anyone know what song is playing in the background of the Wesleyan reunion in How I met everyone else?
Sean | Thursday, March 6th, 2008 06:36 pm GMT -4
JD, I do not know if I am speaking on Hasan’s behalf, but on the DVD version of “Okay Awesome,” there is a really good dance song playing right when they enter the club for the first time. I have been searching for it for quite some time, and I do not believe it is listed in the credits. Thanks for the help.

What theme was played during the end of Episode 13 (3/31) while Barney was typing. It’s very familiar; it sounds like a theme from an 80′s sitcom and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t think of the name. Can you please help??
Thanks!
JD | Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 01:03 pm GMT -4
It’s the theme from Doogie Howser, obviously! Neil Patrick Harris has come a long way.
George | Thursday, April 10th, 2008 03:23 pm GMT -4
Can people find me the music from “the bracket” the music when you see Lily’s scrapbook. And the music while Barney writes his blog. Thanks
Payel | Friday, April 11th, 2008 04:27 am GMT -4
The song which is played while showing Lily’s scrapbook is “one shining moment”, that is actually anthem of college basketball. I don’t know who is the singer. You can see the full lyrics of the song in ,
http://www.oneshiningmoment.com/lyrics/
The whole scene of Barney’s writing his blog is actually copied from an old series named “Doogie Howser, MD” starring Neil Patrick Harris as Doogie. The music is also from the same series.
Ronak | Saturday, April 12th, 2008 04:16 am GMT -4
I need help with a song. It’s playing in season 3, episode 5 “How I Met Everyone Else”. It’s in the scene when Ted talks about how he first met Marshall while Marshall was “eating a sandwich”. It sounds like an 80′s song to me.
Nick | Sunday, April 13th, 2008 04:59 am GMT -4
okay…so I love the song at the beginning of the “Columns” episode on the DVD…it is definitely not Ben Lee’s “Whatever It Is” and I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me where to listen to the whole song
Payel | Sunday, April 13th, 2008 05:38 am GMT -4
I think it is “whatever it is” by Ben Lee only.

On season 2 episode 11 (How Lily Stole Christmas) , there is a musical score playing when Ted visits Lily’s rented apartment. Anyone know the name of the score? Thanks in advance
Mustafa | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 04:09 am GMT -4
In the last episode “the sandcastle in the sand” episode 16, there is an awesome song playd when Lily and her old friend from college starts to dance in the bar a little bit before the end.
Does anyone by any chance know who made that song or what it’s called?
Dznygal | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 10:15 am GMT -4
The song playing on the jukebox in episode 16 is Daisy Dukes by the 69 Boyz.
Mustafa | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 10:37 am GMT -4
Thanks man for the song name.
Really appreciate it.
Yours // Mustafa
Dznygal | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 10:53 am GMT -4
One other note on the jukebox song episode 16 – I could only find 69 boyz lyrics, but couldn’t find album. I’m not sure if 69 boyz did a remake, but the original and great song is by Duice and it’s called Dazzey Dukes. You can download it off of Napster or several other sites.
Mustafa | Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008 10:59 am GMT -4
Ye man, the song I downloaded was from 69 boys and sounded a little different from the one in the episode.
I should check this Dazzey Dukes song a bit too.
Once again, appreciate it.

Hey guys. What’s the song at the end of the Season 3 EP 18 “Rebound Bro” (when Stella came back to Ted, kissed, and decided to “take a big step that week”)? There might be some words such as “looking in the mirror” or “take your time” in the lyrics… But I googled to find nothing.
Thanks a lot

john darc | Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 01:58 am GMT -4
I just rewatched “Okay, Awesome!” on DVD, and the last song that they played was clearly replaced.
Does anyone know what song it is? It sounds familiar as hell.
john darc | Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 02:02 am GMT -4
Oh, I know where I heard it from. Anyone watch the Totally Rad Show?
It’s the interstitial music for the TV section.
Also, it’s probably like, totally free to use. Great way to save money, though it is no “Heaven”.
john darc | Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 03:08 am GMT -4
shit, they even cut out the Shaggarats’ “Linus and Lucy” from Slutty Pumpkin. Now it’s some generic song playing in the background.
That song totally goes with the episode. It’s Halloween, goddamnit!
john darc | Thursday, August 7th, 2008 06:21 pm GMT -4
Hmm, I guess that trance song from “Okay Awesome” must be cheap. They’re playing it again as the gang arrives at Prom in “best Prom Ever”
John | Saturday, August 9th, 2008 01:07 pm GMT -4
What’s the song in Episode 2 (Purple Giraffe) just before Ted goes up onto the roof to talk with Robin? During this song, the video comprises of Ted looking at the window, and also the purple giraffe that the young boy tried to take (which Robin reported earlier in the show). Cheers.

gary | Thursday, September 11th, 2008 12:05 am GMT -4
Pia & Super Mario
If I remember correctly, the song from Lily’s show at the art gallery (season 3, episode 19) is “The Painter” by I’m From Barcelona. A pretty simple song, lyrically, but very catchy.

In Season 1, episode 18, “nothing good happens after 2 am”, there is a song playing when Ted is at Robin’s house at 2:30 am, and just as Ted is about to leave, Ted and Robin hug eachother, and then end up making out. There is a song playing when they hug. No vocals, just a guitar.
If you would like to listen to it, you can google video HIMYM S01E18.
Thanks for any help.

the song playing during the scene with marshal eating a sandwich when he first meets Ted and thinks he is the Dean in episode 49 –”How I Met Everyone Else” — was “I am a scientist” by Guided by Voices.

“Cigarettes & Coffee” actually was played on that episode…but only on the television broadcast. For some reason, they changed it on the DVD. That happened to a lot of the songs like “Soul Meets Body,” “Spit on a Stranger,” and “Off the Record”

Does anyone know the song that was played at the very beginning of tonight’s episode? Kinda sounded like Norah Jones…lyrics went something like this:
Say that I’ve changed
Say I’m different, baby
I finally understand
Say I let go
??????????
??????????
??????????
Over and over and over again
Any help would be appreciated. Sounded like a very pretty song!

i actually know how the melody is played in season 1, episode 12 “the wedding”, the moment, when ted imagines how he dances with robin at the wedding, i mean, when he goes like: “okay, i didnt want to say it in front of the guys, but i thought that day, that this is, how its gonna be made, you put you and a girl you like in a romantic setting, the stars line up…”
it goes:
capo on 2th fret
and then the chords: C,E,F,G, “2nd part” (this “song”/melody is only like 30 seconds) C,E,F,C and don’t strum the chords, but pick them

Help… I need song help.
I've been watching the season one DVD and the song that I assume replaced the "laundry shop" song in the DVD version of the episode "The Wedding" is stuck in my head. None of the lists of music for HIMYM include the DVD replacement tracks. It's right where Robin gets the call to achor and extends into the wedding with Marshall and Lilly Dancing. Can anybody name that tune?

Hi there!
In season 4, episode 12 at the end, just before Barney and Robin speak together , when Marshall says to Barney, he just had "read a magazine" at the office, we can hear a music (looks like a western film music I think), what is that music?
Thanks

This is a pretty uninformed request. But I didn't know this site existed until (years later) now. There is a song that plays for an extended period of time in season 1 near the end of the episode and until the credits roll. Its very "beach boys" sounding. Like a surf love song. Just in case someone else already wanted that, found it and could help me? Thanks!

The unidientified song during Ted and Robin’s big argument in season two episode 16 is "Thicker Than A Smokey". I'm not sure though if it's the version by Gary Higgins or the one by Six Organs Of Admittance.

is there any spotify playlist?
Bryan | Saturday, August 1st, 2009 05:32 am GMT -4
Thanks for compiling this list! I just started an episode by episode tv show blog where the first show I'm backlogging is HIMYM and I know this'll be extremely useful.
I think the song that plays on Robin's radio in the pilot is actually "I Want To Be Ready" by Kool Blues. There's a sample on Pandora if you'd like to verify.

Thank you, creator of this website for retrieving all the song titles. It sure has been hard work and I really appreciate it to know what to look for when i wanna listen to this great soundtrack. I've got a question though: Does anyone know, if the short piece of music in episode 2/22 around 13:00 is even a proper song and if so, knows the title of it? Seems familiar somehow!
Would appreciate your help! Cheers

gene | Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 08:44 pm GMT -4
Hey great compilation. Just wanted to give a heads up, as great as Otis Redding's song "Cigarettes and Coffee" is, its not the song playing on Robin's stereo when Ted tells her he loves her. Its actually by a band called Kool Blues and the song is called "I want to be read". sadly the only place ive been able to find the Mp3 is either downloading the compilation album its on from the Numero Group or on iTunes. But its a GREAT song and i highly recommended it.
Justin | Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 09:49 pm GMT -4
Does anyone know what the song is in Season 3 – Episode 13 – Ten Sessions at 14:53 when Marshall tells Ted Stella has a crush on him? It starts off with the piano playing and it goes on through his last session. I believe this was also used in Season 4.
Any ideas? Thanks!

Can anyone tel me da song- at da end???
Tim | Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 02:25 pm GMT -4
On one of the Season 2 DVDs ( I think), there was a special feature montage (and once again – I think) – and I have the tune in my head. Anyway, there aren't any words, just people singing/yelling off key to music/beat: yah da-da dah, yah da-da dah, yah da-da dah, yah da-da dah -dee dah. Very fast-paced like.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific.
Thanks,
tim

I hear you, James…I also been wondering about that song since I first ehard it on HIMYM, not because I recognized it froms omewhere else but simply because it's so awesome.
For people who might know the song I can add that there's a lot of xylophone and guitar in that song. Please reply to this message if you know the song I'm talking about
Frank | Thursday, September 10th, 2009 10:41 am GMT -4
Oh, realized we're talking about two entirely different songs… That's what I get for skimming through all the comments… Anyway I'm talking about the song near the end when Ted is trying to cheer Marshall up and make him move on from the break up with Lily. It's entirely instrumental. the instruments are guitar, xylophjone and tambourine, I think. So if you know the song please reply to this message

Hey! I was looking for it too! Thanks to Gem, I have the info – It's "Careful" by Michelle Featherstone off her Blue Bike Album – I'm 50 yo techno challenged gal, and can't believe how much easier it is to track this stuff down vs in the 70's! Off to BUY the 'album'… Why? My son is a musician – artists need our support! Enjoy!

The “harp” music in Season 1 “nothing good happens after 2am”, it’s sort of sad and romantic. It is in the “No Tomorrow” episode too
Anybody knows what song it is, or was it just composed for the show?

É não ter nada em comum mesmo !!!
É saber que se tem mais em comum do que se imagina…
É sentir saudade…
É querer dar um tempo…

hi there,
season 3 episode 5 – we’ve established that the sandwich scene is playing “I am a Scientist” by Guided by Voices, but immediately after that when marshall walks in on ted, there’s a cool guitar solo type song playing.
It’s instrumental, which makes it tricky to identify, even more so since it only plays for a few seconds. maybe someone here will recognise it?
here’s hoping it’s not just an original piece i’ll never hear more of

Regarding season 5 episode 23, music used for “the wedding bride” is from Love Actually.
Music is from Craig Armstrong, and is called PM’s Love Theme. And I can’t remember if it’s used as well, but from movie and artist: “Glasgow Love Theme”

Hi everyone! Does anybody know what is the song playing in the background when Ted imagined confronting Stella (telling her she picked the wrong guy) in season 4 episode 6? Just before he got out to confront her for real. I know the end song is Better – Regina Spektor but the one before that! PLS HELP! Can’t get it out of my mind!

i was re-watching the show and i came across an awesome guitar riff on episode 12 of season 2 (first time in new york) after katie asks robin, “well, do you love ted?”. i was wondering if anyone else is bothered why no one noticed that this isn’t posted, and literally losing sleep not knowing what song this is. so if someone could do me a kindness and put an end to my searching for this elusive song, you have my most heartfelt gratitude.

I know that it has been a long time since this has been requested on here, but since The Foreskins’ ‘Murder Train’ was never recorded in full (simply existing as a thirty second clip), Red Ankh took the liberty of doing a sort of cover/extension/interpretation of a full version. Check it out on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFS1kIm5HIw

Please boys and girls, I know it’s not easy, because you can’t hear very much of the song, but i fear that I’ll become crazy if I can’t hear the whole song! O_O

I think that is a great idea. After the long working hours, I want a band that can really give us some great live chill out music to inspire us. Does somebody know what the music was when the mechanic calls Marshall into the repair bay and gives him the bad news about the Fiero. It sounds like it’s from a soundtrack but maybe it’s just a snippet that they wrote for that one part. I just would like to know for sure because I think that little snippet is awesome and would love to own the whole song if there is one.

Fortunately that people who sadly are overweight plus suffering from several diseases are able to reduce the severity of their illnesses by means of losing weight.
